Nexus 4: radios behaving badly - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The one thing that's keeping me from fully enjoying my new Nexus 4---hassles with radios, both wifi & cellular.
1) On my home wifi network on all devices except the Nexus 4 I see solid, constant download speeds of 25Mbps. My Nexus 4 consistently only gives me 4-6Mbps. If I disconnect/reconnect sometimes I can see speeds slightly higher than that, but only temporarily. This isn't generally a huge deal because 4-6Mbps is fast enough for most things on a phone, it just bugs me that every other device in the house gets 25Mbps.
2) Of bigger annoyance is my cellular data connection, it drops off multiple times per day. The cellular signal strength indicates full bars, along with the 'H' icon indicating I'm connected to T-Mobiles HSPA+ network. Voice still works fine but the data connection is dead--nothing will connect--Speedtest, maps, Google Search, Facebook, etc. This forces me to either turn on/off Airplane mode or reboot the phone completely to regain my cellular data connection. On my previous SGS2 I never experienced this issue. It drives me nuts to not be able to pull up a phone number, directions etc at the times I need it most.
Does anybody have any similar experiences or suggestions on how to remedy these issues?
Edit---FYI I'm fully stock but rooted. 4.2.1 update not yet applied.

1) Check APN settings and make sure your account is properly provisioned by calling T-Mo CSRs. I had a similar issue with my Nexus One back in the day that was fixed with a reboot after they reprovisioned my account.
2) Flash factory image, in case it was a bad flash of the radio. It happens.
3) If 1 & 2 fails, or you don't want to try #2, call the Nexus hotline and get yourself a replacement.

Called TMobile and had them reset my account, I'll keep an eye on it the next couple of days.
Right now I'm downloading a cached Google map via WiFi and it is slooooow.

I also notice on edge the signal is inconsistent.

Hi
The Wi-Fi issue is something happening to others, seems to be a driver bug.

Wifi connectivity is my biggest gripe. I'll step 6 feet away from my router and I lose a bar. A couple rooms away I fluctuate between 1 and 0 bars.

Did you ever find a cure for this? I am having the exact same issues on my O2UK Nexus 4, anytime I want to use the data connection its almost guaranteed not to work and involve reboots, Airplane mode on and off etc

Im having the same issues. My data just drops wifi and cellular. I dont get full signal wifi or cellular. I live in india and flashed the latest .54 which was released in india recently. I managed to at least get cellular data going but my strength still low and data drops still on both wifi and cellular. Its super frustrating. Any ideas?

try reflashing the OS on your phone and try changing the wifi channel on your router.
changing the channel on my wireless router really helped signal to all of my devices. there may be lots of interference on the channel you're on.

I may reflash OS but i just got the phone today so ill slow down a bit. I flashed the radio one would think that would be enough? Anyway I have many other devices on my wifi without an issue and i used wifi analyser and theres no overlap with other routers and i experience this on 2g 3g and wifi so it looks like some modem problem. Unfortunately the phone was bought 3 months ago in the States and im here in india so im kind of stuck

There are known issues with the Nexus 4 wifi speeds slowing for no apparent reason. Also, known issues with the LOS (loss of signal). You can find information and bug reports on both of these issues.

I dad see some threads reporting this issue. Unfortunately i dont see any solutions or resolved threads. Additionally people either have it they dont as i see it i cant see people witching sides. Its just a little frustrating. Any opinions on whether kernel swapping will help?

Did a full flash from scratch. No progress. Also i went to my friends place and signal was perfect for like 4 hrs straight but every other place ive been since has seen choppy signal.

Pretty bad. I ran a test a few weeks ago and I can go up to 450 feet from my router (old Linksys) without a problem, and after that it gets iffy, and finally disconnects at 500 feet. I am seeing an average of 20 Mbps on wifi. Now if I can only get my cellular connection (non-wifi) to go faster than 1 Mpbs max I would have a usable phone.

I have a slightly diff issue.
If I reboot my phone, I connect to my router no problem. If I turn wifi off (to save battery) and then turn it back on.... it shows my AP's as out of range.... but I do see my neighbours AP's. I also have an N10 with has no issues at all with wifi (and none of my other divises have issues either).
When I bought the N4 they seemed to be having an issue with it when setting it up.... but I was not paying close attention. I am wondering if I have a bad phone on top of the "normal" wifi issues that other are experiencing.
Think I will revert back to stock and swap it for another phone to see if I can at least just turn off / on the wifi rather then reboot to connect (how sad is that?)

**** UPDATE ****
I picked up a cheap belkin router and set it to AP mode.
My N4 has no issues at all with it. Connects when I want it to right away and is fast / solid connection.

Internet connection very slow!

I and my father have a new SGS2. When I connect to Wifi, no problems at all. On BOTH, the internet connection is very slow, with stops and always changing H... 3G... H....... If I connect to my old phone, the speed is fine, so it's not the local provider. My SGS2 has a lot of apps in it, and my father's one is stock ready and new, but the problem is the same for both. Also it spends a lot of battery.
Some people are complaining about this problem, is there a solution?
Try disabling fast dormancy.
how do you disable fast dormancy?
cheers
Change network setting to gsm only mode if it still come you might consider to chanhe the sim card, like i plan to.
I also using this gt p1000 with different sim card and it happened more faster browsing rather than this dual core gt i9100

Probably due to the radio sucking. There are others you can flash to...not sure which is best.
Are you by chance on AT&T in the US? Anyone know of the best radio for this phone on AT&T?
I also get very slow internet comnection in areas where high speed UMTS is not available. Actually, in these areas the phone is so slow that it always looses communication with the server. Practically, internet does not work AT ALL!
I'm really tired of being regularly pissed off by this phone and its many defects!
UPDATE:
Just tried disabling fast dormancy by using the hidden service menu *#9900#
It looks like at least now commection works. Speed is not optimal but that may be normal because at the moment I am in an area not covered by H+ connection.

YET ANOTHER UPDATE: Forget what I just said in the post above. It only worked for a few minutes, and then I'm back with no connection. It looks like this phone is rather deaf to 3G networks. But again, I may be wrong. The thruth is that I am desperately struggling to make this bloody phone work, but so far I have no clues at all.

There have been random reports of regional and carrier specific problems with 2/3G. Some have been fixed with s/w updates, some people had to get rid of the phone. If your phone and your father's phone perform differently using the same SIM card, than his phone has a hardware problem. If they both suck, then you can either keep playing with the settings, hope a future s/w release fixes the problem, or get different phones.
The SGS2 appears to be router sensitive. It doesn't like D-Link routers. It appears to like Netgear routers a lot. While you shouldn't have to, changing your router can make a big difference in Wi-Fi performance.
Also, both of the conditions above wreak havoc on battery life. I can get 15 hours connected to my Netgear router while people with D-Link's are lucky to see 8.
I do have a second phone (my good old nokia n95 8GB), and also a second contract with the same carrier. I've already tried swapping the sim cards, and the result is always the same: N95 working flawlessly and SGS2 struggling even to get a reply from the server.
Obviously it's a problem related to the SGS2 (mine is unbranded and unrooted, just made the update to the latest firmware 2 months ago), and not to the carrier, although in this period I am in my parents' house, where signal is slightly lower than what I get in my house, at the opposite side of the city. So some cross relationship with signal strength may actually also be possible.
I do have Dlink routers both in my hose and in my parent's house, but I get very good wifi connection, I really can't complain about that. Also because my routers are different from the model that is known to cause problems. Anyway wifi connection is not in discussion here. It's cellular network connection that's problematic.
This evening, after disabling and reenabling all possible settings, and setting network connection to CDMA only, I was able to get fairly good connections, however we shouldn't be supposed to trickle anything in order to simply get cellular network data connection.

[Q] No 3G internet after switching wifi off

After a couple of days of using my Nexus 4 i've noticed a problem with the way it handles the transition between Wifi and 3G internet.
Usually it works just as expected, when I switch Wifi off (or just go out of wifi range) it automatically switches to 3G internet (coverage icon in blue). The problem is that sometimes, after switching wifi off, it doesn't turn on 3G data (coverage icon remains grey). The only way I can get 3G internet back is turning Airplane Mode on, and then off again. ¿Am I missing something here? I've seen other people having this problem with other phones, but no workaround yet

This happens with my gf's Galaxy S3 too...
I think this is just a network coverage issue. My old mytouch 4g slide had the same problem. Usually it switches quickly if I'm in an area with great reception. If I'm somewhere with weak reception, it takes a little longer.

Well, I don't think this is a network coverage problem because when this problem happens, it can stay for hours with no 3G internet, it just doesn't even try. But then I switch airplane mode on and then off again, and it achieves 3G data connectivity almost immediately. Also, with the same SIM card I didn't have this problem with an iPhone 3GS.
Well, i've been investigating a little bit, and I've just found it in the AOSP issues tracker as "Android Issue #2207"
I've also found some apps like "3G Connection Fix Free" that seems to try to fix it
I'll try them and report back my findings
I think I have this problem too sometimes. I think my phone has other issues, I'm about to send it back to Google because it keeps dropping cell signals as well, but I definitely have this same problem.
Yes, it happened to me as well yesterday.
After I had more than ten hours at home using wifi, it can't switch to 3G automatically when I left home. The only way I did is reboot the phone.
But if I just connected to wifi for few hours it is OK.
Before I use One X, I don't have this problem before, but the problem is I can't access to internet once I am using wifi for more than 36 hours about.
I think there is big problem for Android system related to wifi and 3G access.
I don't think it's a nexus issue at all. It is definitely something else. My phone hands over form wifi to H+ in a matter of seconds every-time.
I believe you might have a coverage issue.
I am having the same issue, and can confirm it is NOT related to coverage. A reboot of the phone will immediately fix the problem. Have also tried disabling the mobile network, then re-enabling it, with no success.

Well, nothing i've tried has worked so far. It looks like if it stays connected to Wifi for many hours (for example overnight), it just won't switch to mobile internet unitl I reboot or do the airplane mode trick. I also have wiped everything and reinstalled the stock rom, but the problem is still there. Has anybody fixed it?
Had this problem with my Nexus One, with my Transformer 300 and now with my Nexus 4.
I use German provider O2 and after doing some research, many people suffer this problem and have O2. I thought it was related to my SIM card and I ordered a new one without success. My wife has O2, too. She never had a problem, not with her HTC Desire, not with her Galaxy Nexus.
I worked around with free app WifiFixer Free, which connects to 3G every 60 minutes. This doesn't seem to work on Jelly Bean, though.
The problem is all but new and I am out of ideas. I now use an app that enters and leaves airplane mode upon leaving a Wi-Fi network. But it yet has to prove that it works...
Any news in here? have the same problem and don't know how to solve it. It's so annoying

Wifi Signal Strength Issues

I've been looking everywhere for solutions to the weak Wifi on the Nexus 10, but didn't find any solutions yet.
The network also has an added wifi repeated connected via LAN, but still the Nexus keeps 1-3 bars of wifi.
I have another 5 or so Wifi devices, Galaxy S2, Lumia 920, iPhone, 2 laptops. None of these have any issues and are always on 4-5 bars, usually max all the time.
I've tested both on 2.4ghz and 5ghz, both to my Asus AC66U and also to an old RT-10, one Huawei, etc.
It's very clear that no matter the band or router settings, the Nexus 10 really has a weak signal reception in comparison.
Since the Nexus is new for me, it's on 4.3 and I don't know how it performed earlier.
Are there any other modem drivers or similar that can be flashed?
Any other experiences with custom ROM's?
Wifi strength has been a little weak since release honestly. Has been mentioned alot here and around the web for a while.
Now my problem since the latest update has been wifi drops where I lose wifi transfer completely even though the wifi icon shows a good connection.
I think this is something new (i know it is for me at least) and have been looking to see if anyone else has seen this issue in the latest software release.
If I toggle wifi off/on it works after but it is a huge pita.

This problem (wifi icon gray and no internet connection) started with 4.3 for me without question. Previously wifi connectivity was rock solid and I never gave a second thought to it. Nothing changed but the android version. I hope it is fixed in 4.4.

mine was doing the same thing. i tried clearing the cache, uninstalling apps that i thought might interfere and then a full factory reset. still had the same problem. i rooted and then did a factory reset from recovery and it hung up reinstalling apps so i did another factory reset still in and out. i did another factory reset and logged into my wifi and left for a few hours to work on something else. when i got back the signal showed full and about half of the apps installed. i reinstalled all of the apps that hadn't installed and it's working fine now. not sure why i had to wipe it 4 times but it's working fine now and streaming movies without a hiccup. i guess something kept getting corrupted during the setup or reinstall of apps. anyway it's been working fine for a few hours which is the best it's done in the last month.

[Q] 3G connection problems after leaving WIFI on Note 3 [UK]

On my Galaxy Note 3, when at home I am connected to my WIFI. When I leave the house or switch off my WIFI the phone seems unable to connect to the network (in this case Three) and the browser, email and any other data apps state they cannot connect to the Internet.
The only way to resolve it is to switch on Flight Mode and then turn it off again. I saw a comment in the reviews for the Note 3's keyboard fix that one other person is experiencing the same as me.
Is anyone else having this problem and do you know of a permanent fix? The only info I can find is a similar issue on the Note 2 at time of launch which look to have been corrected by a patch.
i have this problem so i flashed h3g uk firmware and it kept failing, so i flashed back to uk btu firmware and im stuck with the exact same problem. no idea how to fix either,
p.s my problem only seems to be with google now, play store and sometimes on any app that uses internet i get news feed error no connection ect..
I am on Three network and mine works OK.

Solution
I think I have found a work around to this annoying problem. It was losing the ability to use any data when I left a WIFI spot I was connected to, or when out and about and the phone picked up an open WIFI spot. None of the WIFI advanced options made any difference. It would affect 3G data too, I'd lose all data access until I toggled Flight mode off & on...that was the only way I could get it working again other than restart the phone.
I found a post about a similar issue with the Note 2 when it was first released and it mentioned a WIFI power saving mode. It turns out you can get to this from the SeviceMode screen by dialing this number *#0011# (ServiceMode will start as soon as you enter the second #) - assume it is the same for all. Once in ServiceMode, tap the menu button and chose WIFI. You will then see a WIFI Power Save Mode label with a button underneath. Tap the button to set it to OFF.
I've been testing this all day, normally I'd lose data at least three times, sometimes more, while travelling but so far today everything has worked flawlessly ... no loss of data connectivity. From what I have been reading, switching off power save mode does not affect battery life despite what you might think and I've not noticed any unusual battery drain today so far. So if you are experiencing the same annoying loss of data, try this before you take your phone back. Hopefully this is a software issue that will be fixed in the future.
I swapped the phone
Hi,
I had something similar, except it wasnt wifi related, it happened after I lost the signal for a while (eg, in a lift/elevator).
I tried a new simcard, and that didnt help (also Three UK).
Then I got the handset swapped for a new one at carphonewarehouse, and it fixed the issue, so I put it down to a lemon unit.
cheers
George
on my s4 and n3 i did more than 10 tests each on wifi and 3g with phones simultaeneously, both on same network, both held in my either hands, both using speedtest both connecting to same server, both on the three network sims on the one plan with unlimited internet including tethering (both pans in my name), same location, same times tests were done.
both on 3g and wifi the n3 is MUCH MUCH slower than the s4 both on three network and same wifi
********************* on wifi on 3G
S4 PING TIME 32 to 173 66 to 86
N3 Ping Time 30 - 37 73 to 1110
S4 upload speeds 8 to 17.79mbps 1.65 to 2.27
N3 upload speeds 7.11 to 12.58 1.74 to 3.77
s4 download speeds 17.79 to 22.38 6.61 tp 7.68
N3 download speeds 7.93 to 12.58 mbps 0.92 to 8.04
the numbers are not just it, even during speed tests i was losing wifi connection on the N3 a couple of times and see the same happening on streaming youtube where it keeps stalling on wifi unlike the s4. surely there is something wrong with the hardware of firmware
Looks like the WIFI setting only helped and it has not solved my problem. l now lose network data connection less often when leaving a wifi zone but it still happens. More worryingly on two occasions now I have lost all access to three including calls, texts and data. Toggling Airplane mode brings everything back to life but this makes the service unreliable.
Sometime I also have this problem. This is similar to when I went overseas, I turned off the data roaming, but it always unable to connect to data when I returned. Usually I have to reboot it.

Just got this alert as it was in my spam box hence the late reply.
Had done this comparison video of the note 3 versus nexus 5 WiFi speeds on same router and nexus 5 was giving speeds of up to 50 Mbps and the Samsung galaxy note 3 was giving 0.5mbps plus drop outs! See video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-XvFPwTAGA
The router works fine with my 3 nexus 7 tablets, 3 Tegra note 7 tablets, Samsung galaxy note (original), 2x android mini PC, 2x smart TV's from Sony and LG, 2x smart bluray players from Sony and LG, laptop, smart camera from Samsung, Panasonic stranger, my NAS drives, 2x old HTC desire phones, a few other old phones from Sony and Nokia and media player from samsung and archos, the only device that ever had a problem with any Router is this Samsung galaxy note 3.
Main problem happens when there are open WiFi networks around our you have selected the auto detect in settings. Here is the solution https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjL8JbSQCvw and now I get 50mbps with same phone and router! So it was **** Samsung software to blame!
Now I have triple sim adapter in phone and all three give me 3g signal in Many areas.

I have a Note 3 and this always happens to me when I return from travel overseas. I turn off mobile data and data roaming and use Wifi, but am never able to reconnect when I return. The first time I fixed this by rebooting. This time I tried restarting my phone, removing the battery, turning off Wifi Power Saving Mode by dialing *#0011#. Fortunately I was able to fix the problem simply by toggling Airplane mode without having to reboot. Hope this helps.

D800, bad wifi, bluetooth connectivity

I recently just purchased a Razer Nabu x. I was totally excited to start using. Well, I thought it was defective, since it kept disconnecting. I tested it on a Nexus 4, however and it did not disconnect. I even downloaded a signal meter on both phones. The nexus 4 read nearly full bars when next to the smartband. My d800 read two bars next to it.
So, my bluetooth is screwed. What else is wrong? My WiFi. Where my girlfriend's phone (the nexus 4) can connect perfectly fine to our school's wifi network at nearly all times. Mine insists on being a chode about it.
It will say that the signal is Excellent. I click it to connect. Either a) nothing will happen or b) it will flash to 'connecting' for a split second, then return to saying 'saved.' It's also worth noting that after it says 'connecting' for a second, the signal usually drops to poor. It gets subpar signal in my room. Next to the router. Granted, it normally works fine on my home wifi, and i can understand that the school's wifi is probably a little harder to connect to, but it's significantly worse than my old phone (which is my girlfriend's current phone, the nexus 4 I mentioned earlier)
I've installed a couple roms on my phone, and even on stock the wifi was a hassle and refused to connect. I'm currently running Resurrection Remix I purchased the phone used, with no information except that it had a clean ESN so I don't know of any damage that would have been done to it.
Has anyone ever had a similar issue with bluetooth/wifi? Just absolutely awful signal, reception, connectivity? if so, how did you fix it? And would it be possible to REPLACE the wifi/bluetooth antenna?
