camera pics vs pixel 2 xl - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

So I got a crazy deal on a pixel 2 xl off Craigslist and have been comparing the two phones all weekend. I gotta say I was expecting the pixel too be much better. While it is smoother, but not by much, I'm shocked at how close the cameras are!! I've taken multiple pics and asked my wife to tell me which ones look better. I'd say 6 out of 10 times she picks the essential!! She's even notes that the screen looks better on the ph1.
The first pic is with the essential, portrait mode vs pixel 2 portrait mode.

The pixel and pixel 2 line shines when it comes to low lighting condition. Also video recording using EIS is amazing compared to zero in the essential. Hopefully they enable it soon!

I don't recorded too many videos, mainly use my phone for pics. The sample I posted was in low light and I think the essential pic def looks better.
I know overall when you get crazy into the specs etc the pixel cameras are better. But my point is that they're really close in most cases, sometimes ph1 is better and sometimes the pixel is.
Just wanted to post something since the camera updates cause that's where this phone really gets beat up and I think that's not the case anymore!!!

Oh I totally agreed, the camera is much better now. However, in real low light such as 2700k floor lamp, or night stand light, it struggles horribly and the pics are washed out, and some times have red tint to it. I would upload pics but I am kinda lazy heheh. Will try to post pics later, but I did a huge comparison between gcam hdr+ modes on reddit if u wanna go to see it.

Droid Turbo Review.

The phone has some slick features like the Moto voice services where you can wake up the phone with your custom voice command with the phone being up to 5ft away from you. It also detects when you are at home, work, in a car or sleep and automatically changes behavior of apps based on where you are. The home screen widget is nice too, it gives you up to the minute weather details and lets you know how soon it'll rain or snow down to the minute. The battery life is amazing, once you leave the house you never have to worry about using a charger for the rest of the day.
Now those are all great but the good ends there with me. The camera was subpar and all weekend I was out at events and parties and I wish I had my Note 3 with me to take pics. A lot of the pics came out blurry, the eyes on people where white devilish looking. The call quality sucked too, I had the volume as high as it can go and unless you are in a completely silent room you will have a hard time hearing. I went to the gym and had my beats headphones in and volume to the max and I could still hear the gym radio. There's no notification light on the front of the phone, this to me is a huge disappointment. I use the Lightflow app and i have a different color light for every notification and it comes in handy when you want to know what type of notification is awaiting for you without touching the phone.
I will be returning the phone this week and going back to using my Note 3 while I wait for the Nexus 6 or Galaxy Note Edge to come out.
Pros - Great battery life, premium metal feel, home screen widget, lock screen notifications look nice, Moto voice services.
Cons - Screen isn't too bright, low ear piece volume, low volume with headphones, poor camera, kind of slippery in hand, no notification light, no removable battery, no expandable memory.
Good review. I agree with all of it.

Not sure what your problems are with the camera... I have an S5 and Turbo tends to take better pictures in most situations by far, especially in low light. It's not the cameras fault that you can't hold it steady when taking a photo...
I think your only valid complaint would be the LED notifications. Which if you did any research at all before buying the device, you would of known before purchase it did not have. Everything else can and most likely will be addressed soon. The storage complaint is old, 32GB is fair & they offer 64GB at a competitive price that no one else is really matching.
Go have fun with TouchWiz & Samsung plastic I guess.
Go into settings, sound, and audio effects. Disable the equalizer. Everything will sound miles better.
Camera is kinda slow though, I'm with you on that.

Lol wow, you act like my review was about you. I'm going to post a few pics and you tell me if they are great or not. I've seen other post where people had to tweak settings etc but my Note 3 took way better pics. Even when I use Snapchat the focus seems slow and delayed. It seems like you have to as still as a statue to take a good pic and that's not always an option. And as far as the notification light issue, I just figured that was standard. Even if I knew it wasn't there it's still a negative against the phone.

Nah. I just think a lot of the comments around here are quite silly towards this phone. It's like people went and purchased the phone without even doing any research and expected it to be better than anything on the market.
I agree, those pictures are quite bad. However, it's not purely because of the camera itself.
For one, you are using 15.5 MP 16:9 and not the full 21MP 4:3, which tends to produce a much better picture. Secondly, you are most likely just randomly snapping without even selecting a proper focus exposure. The pictures are blurry in most cases because of the low light situation, you probably have HDR enable for some reason and the fact you don't have a steady hand while taking the picture does not help. Third, I notice flash in most every shot, which on any smartphone will tend to produce a horrible picture.
You just point and shoot. So your pictures are bound to be bad.

Funny I knew that would be your comeback, but I had other people take pics when I wanted to be in the pic and they turned out bad. And when I take pics with my Note 3, people always say how they look great and even better than iPhone 5/5s.

I have the note 3 and i kinda agree with you on the camera stuff... but I think your just too used to the really good quality camera on the note 3.
I completely agree with the OP, the Turbo produces mediocre pictures compared to other flagship phones. Landscape photos in particular lack detail.
FYI, taking photos in 16:9 format is what most people do, not everyone wants 4:3 photos.

I'm actually pleased with the camera quality. Just not the shutter speed. It could be a tad faster.

Huh? Small Pic is cropped from larger. You can almost read the numbers on the gauge. That photo was taken yesterday through the glass on the doors which probably degraded the image slightly also.
There's like 5 guys (not the OP really, I think he's new) posting over all the forum about how "mediocre" everything about the Droid Turbo is, changed the tone to negative in this section. They know who they are. It's an exclusive device with a locked bootloader so it's a small part of XDA, 5 butthurt guys can make a lot of noise.

That's what I'm talking about, close up photos seem to be great, it's really lacking in the distance area such as landscapes.
Just to show you where I'm coming from, this was my G3. I know it's not a fair comparison since they are different photos, but I've found the Turbo to really lack in the landscape photo department. Up close photos are great.

What you see there is because of very Low light situations. Low light means a slow stutter speed and any movement (trees or camera) will degrade the image dramatically. I can't really comment on Turbos performance in low light because I haven't tested it yet. But it's ability to capture fine detail is there.
I had sort of assumed that the Droid Turbo has active notifications like the Moto X. Is that not the case? It makes an LED redundant.

Um, ya. I personally think the Turbo took the better picture here. For instance, I can't even make out Toshiba on your G3 picture. Much more clear/crisp on the Turbo. Not to mention your G3 sample is fairly over exposed & extremely warm in color. But both pictures are relatively bad due to settings and hard to really use as a comparison. Unless you are comparing just a simple pull out of pocket point and shoot.
Your other shots (above) seem to just be point and shoot as well and not necessarily focus exposed or any effort really put into them (I could be wrong). You are also taking a lot of shots pointed/aimed in direct sunlight/sunset which will put out pretty poor quality pictures in general anyway.
Stop posting bad situations and try something that will actually yield a decent photo for comparison. The shots you are taking are really more aimed towards a more high end sensor.
In general you are expecting way too much out of a camera phone in most of your situations.

Is the camera this bad?

I've heard too many negative reviews about the camera and that it can be a deal breaker..so which camera is better iphone 6's camera or the axon 7's camera?
Bought the phone because previous one was stolen few days before I went traveling in China. Been more than happy with the pictures it takes. Panorama is cool too. It struggled with low light, but it improving noticably with every update.
Uploaded a few pics from a national park in China for you. You be the judge. All pics were made with auto mode.

I have to say though. The iPhone costs $300 more. If you care so much go for the Galaxy S7 for camera (and Android)
Actually not that bad
I remember hearing tons of negative reviews on the camera and being worried that it wasn't going to be that good but after using the phone for about a week I can honestly say the camera is pretty good. It does struggle a bit in low light, though but that's simply because of the amount of megapixels. In my opinion, some reviewers are just a bit picky

I'm coming from a Nexus 6P and the Axon 7 camera just doesn't compare, especially in low light. The 6P had a great camera. That being said, since B27 came out things have improved noticeably and while the camera still isn't ad good as the 6P, it's more usable now and does produce decent enough shots in low and pretty good ones in good light.

Low light scenes are very challenging for the camera. ZTE really need to improve the HDR processing, where it can't touch 2015's Nexus phones and where it trails the much cheaper Honor 7.
There's not much sun where I am and I'm really noticing the difference.
You can certainly get better-looking results by playing with white balance in manual mode but that won't help you if you want to snap a darker foreground without blowing out all the background detail - a trick the Nexus phones' HDR+ excels at. I know they are deadly slow but I'd be happy to put up with much longer exposure times if it meant better pictures.
Could you please provide some selfie snaps as I'm kindda of a selfie guy?
Also I currently have the iPhone 5 so if the axon's camera is worse than the iphone 5 I might go with the oneplus 3 even though I hate its 1080p screen

Lgg6! Is it worth buying?

Hi guys!
I've owned g2, 3, 4, 5 and v10 and 20.
I really like lg phones but I got a bit disappointed on my g5.
Has anyone bought g6 and if you did what's your first impressions on the phone?
Camera, battery life etc..
Thank you!
I've had mine since Wed night and so far, I really like it. The deciding factor for me was the promotions with the purchase through Sprint, which included a Google Home and 49" 1080p TV and the placement of the finger print reader. I previously had S7 Edge and I think I liked the bright colors and true blacks on the S7 screen more, but the G6 screen is by no means a disappointment. The colors are more accurate than the AMOLED screens and it is really clear plus the finger print reader works WAY better than the S7 did and it's quick. The G6 feels solid and it's easy to hold. I feel the speaker is decent but not great. As for battery life, it's too hard to tell at this point because "doze" learns behavior and usually takes a few days to really optimize battery life, but out of the box I would say decent so far, considering I'm on it all the time LOL. I also feel the camera is better than the S7 and I'm going to really get use out of the wide-angle lens. I do not regret the choice at this point. I've had LG "G" series phones in the past and feel it's the best one by far. I prefer Google Assistant over Bixby since it's has the google knowledge base behind it and it already works with so many other smart home devices.
If you are all about specs, then S8 is probably the way to go because it's got the new generation processor.
That's really helpful thanks!
I don't mind specs. I'm currently on xiaomi mi max and just figured out that specs mean nothing!
I really prefer lg's camera over samsung's and I'm glad to know its good.

In low light the camera struggles. Any motion in the image turns into a blur. The shutter speed is entirely to slow in low light but theres hope an update is coming soon. Other than that the phone is incredible. Battery has been amazing. 6 1/2 hours screen on time every single day.

Totally agree about the low light. In normal use the camera is outstanding and wide angle is so useful. I'm seeing others getting 7 hours SOT which is remarkable for a 3300 battery. I haven't really turned anything off on mine as far as settings go so for me 6 1/2 is way more than I expected.

HI There! Just wanted to share my experience so far. I'm coming from an S7 and have used LG phones in the past. The user experience in general has been great. I love the screen, love the feel in the hand and I really enjoy software experience too.
BUT - The camera is not good. I have a little boy, so I literally take about 20 photos a day - So far this camera has been really disappointing. For this reason I will sell the phone and get something else.
I also received a really weird error / phone warning earlier today, which is actually detailed here if you wanted to take a look: http://g.co/ABH
edit: sorry I didn't explain why I don't love the camera. Colours look pretty good, however there is a massive issue with focus. Even just the slightest movement causes the picture to blur. This is very noticeable with the wide angle lens, which obviously doesn't have OIS, however this issue is still present with the primary shooter. If i didnt rely on the camera so much, I'd really love this phone. However I'd rather have a phone that i didn't love, for the sake of good photos.

That's weird I've never seen seen that before.
Man, I don't know what to think. On one hand I really want to get this phone as I held the S8 and BB and really don't like the fingerprint sensor location or curved screen. Those SOT reports some of you have is amazing! On my S6 I'm lucky to get 2hrs! So mostly I want the G6 because of a beefy battery, flat screen, and better camera (the OIS has been wonky in my S6 since early in it's life...I have to shake/smack the phone to get it to kick in and actually focus). But this motion blur has me a bit wary. I guess every phone choice is a compromise of some sort or another.
I can also confirm that the camera has issues with low light and movement. I've got a 2 year old, and virtually every shot of her is blurry unless I take it in full daylight. I upgraded from the LG G4, and I never had such a hard time getting a focused picture of her before. (For example, I had to take 20 pictures of her on a swing set to get 1 in focus.. shutter speed was reporting at 1/120. My G4 NEVER had an issue where her entire body was blurry and usually anything over 1/60th came out clean). Low light is also somewhat relative. I have a lot of issues indoors and at dusk, neither of which I would ordinarily consider low light situations and both of which my G4 handled better. I've been playing around with manual mode and have found that I can usually get a clean picture in low light and with movement there, so I'm mostly confident it's a software issue that can be corrected (though I understand the V20 has similar issues and is now out 6 months without a software fix....)
Overall I still love the phone and the wide angle is AMAZING when it is bright outside, so I'm just relying on my wife's S7 to handle the low light and fast motion pictures for now. If you don't have a second camera option though, I might be hesitant to buy the G6 until more testing is done and a solution is found to the blurry issue.
I had G6 for few days and i wasnt totally happy with it first but its coming around and few changes in settings are making it feel more snappy.
First thing, the phone feels great in hand and screen is top notch. Coming from LG G3, phone feels smaller and easier to hold. Also, i really like the notification and ringer sounds from LG.
Out of the box, G6 didnt feel any faster than LG G3 at first but few settings in debug option(turned off animation) and battery optimization ignore options, its feels like a new phone.
I'll have to see how much battery usage will suffer from these changes but it looks like LG G6 is in battery optimization mode as default. I've turned on "ignore battery save optimization" for chrome and camera, and other apps i normally use everyday. I can notice ES file explorer opening faster and camera auto zoom reacting slightly faster now.
Not worth it

yeah I can concur with the bad camera, just recieved my G6 from ATT today, and it only lasted 3 hours, I have been using a IPhone 7 plus for almost for week after not using IOS for 6 years and I loved the feel and the screen but the rear camera and the front camera suck, the Note 5 I had took better pics and selfies by huge margin, so I had to take the G6 back, if it took the pics like my old note 5 did I would have kept it, but I take lot of pics and i want something that takes crisp pics, so maybe S8 might be in my future :good:

There is software update scheduled for April 7th -Tmobile. Hopefully some of the camera issues will be addressed.
My V20 didn't take blurry or grainy pictures. I don't know.... I really like this phone but pictures are really important to my wife and I. I don't want to be forced to live in the "your pictures suck!" category.

So I guess, the software update did not fix the blur issue.
The blurry pictures aren't a software issue. The main problem I see is that LG removed laser auto-focus from the G6, so technically the G5/V20 cameras are vastly superior when it comes to focusing on objects (especially when considering macro images). Also, LG chose to over-saturate colors resulting in less color-accurate images, not to mention lower sensor size = lower detail images (16/20MP G5&V20 vs 12MP G6). Downgraded cameras aside, the only other big gripes I have with the G6 are no removable battery and that they removed the IR blaster and notification LED. Having the older SOC isn't so bad these days as the SD82x series is still very fast. If I didn't already own the G5 (which I am very happy with for the most part) I might consider the G6, but probably would opt to wait for the V30 instead if it wasn't an urgent situation.

The Pixel 2 Photography Thread

I don't get impressed by technology much, but the Pixel 2's camera is truly impressive. I think it's better even than what reviews are saying. Every other phone I've owned I've been able to get good photos if I held it right, in the right light, with no movement, and the perfect combination of factors. With the Pixel 2, I find it nearly impossible to take a bad photo. Everything comes out good.
Let's share some of our favorite Pixel 2 shots.
(These obviously are down-scaled so the clarity isn't going to be the same as full-res)

Some lovely photos dude! My sentiments too, really love this phone and the camera capabilities. It's only going to get better with the visual core and machine learning for portrait shots.
Agreed

Same with yours, and probably similarly I didn't set out to take photos, I was just out and around and snapped what I saw.
This was a very low light environment but the detail it retains in the pine needles is incredible.
Direct linking is not working I guess.
The last two I played around with the editing options in the GPhoto app.
The rum and coke makes a good wallpaper.

Thanks! HDR+ was on on all of them by default. Got some truly amazing ones as well as those that day, was such an amazing backdrop. All are non-edited and I didn't use Snapseed.
Also I've only just discovered HDR Enhanced and HDR+ are two separate modes, still a little confused as to the difference, as I know HDR Enhanced does take longer to process. I've tried googling it but read a lot of conflicting information. So would be ace if someone who knew what they were talking about could explain the difference between them.

HDR+ = auto HDR. App will decide whether HDR is needed or not based on the situation.
HDR enhanced= HDR always on.

My only complaint is the Noise and artifacts that it has. But I have yet to have a good phone that does well on that front. I think it is amazing what they are able to do with mostly software.
Just starting to realize how the camera in general has consistancy as well as always being snappy.
Also found that the selfie camera is actually usable. High Dynamic Range is awesome!
Portrait Mode is okay but looking closely shows mishaps around the edges of things, ears etc. But. Considering that [emoji624] mode works on both cameras as well as working with software as the main supplier of quality I'm really impressed. The Pixel 2 is starting to grow on me. And I've had both G6, S8, S7, S6, HTC 10, 6P, MI 5s pixel port, MI Mix 2.
I've uploaded some Pixel 2 photos from Berlin and Prague. Camera still amazing. Most of the photos were taken with HDR+ Enhanced (I've stopped using HDR+ after the first 1 or 2 days). (I took 1400 photos/videos in 2 weeks with the Pixel 2 and Nexus 6P).
Honestly, anyone who had a Nexus 5X, 6P, Pixel 1 shouldn't be really impressed with photo quality, as this HDR+ quality was already great since the Nexus 5 2013 was released and the easy-detail, and the resolution quality is more or less the same since the Nexus 5X/6P (I haven't used the N6).
Now the focus speed, HDR+ processing speed, camera launch speed, capture speed, video quality and stabilization, etc etc. Those are other things that really improved in each device upgrade IMO.

Nexus 5 (2013) samples:
[The old 5 also had great quality, but the MP difference is quite noticeable compared to 5X/6P/Pixel/Pixel 2. That HDR+ camera was IMO still superb for 2013/2014/2015 years before the 5X/6P and other smartphones were released, I honestly had to sell a Z5 Compact because I was missing the Nexus 5 camera]

I didn't want to start a new thread.......can anyone comment on these (P1 vs P2). Notice that ISO on P1 is much higher and yet images look the same and in some when you zoom in Pixel 1 is less blurry and just a better quality overall

I dont see much difference. I even prefer pixel 1 photos in there so it make me wonder why so much praise and hype for camera of pixel 2 when its not much different to last generation pixel.

FIRST OnePlus 5T camera review by heise.de

https://m.heise.de/ct/artikel/OnePlus-5T-Keine-Zoom-Kamera-mehr-3887487.html
Heise.de is one very serious german tech site and they say that since other sites already broke the NDA they dont feel obliged to hold information back.
To make it short: camera does not get better, low light performance gets even worse.
Long version: The camera setup (still WITHOUT OIS!) will be 16+20 mp again BUT the 20 mp sensor this time won't work as telephoto lens. Also aperture changes from f/2.6 to also f/1.7 like the 16 mp main snapper. Pixel size of the 20 mp sensor stays at 1.0 um. This sensor will, despite its crazily small pixel size, automatically work as low light shooter when light levels drop below 3.5 lux, making pictures look even worse than with the 16 mp sensor.
The Software does NOT use both sensors to combine the picture information like it is the case for other phones. Thus, picture quality does not seem to improve compared to the OP 5.
My comment: This really doesnt seem to make any sense. Why not put in a sensor with bigger pixels if you want a lowlight specific unit? Why take one with even smaller pixels? Wtf!? Did they have too many of those crappy 20mp sensor left over? Or why not at least use both sensors to combine the two die pics? Or why not just use the fabulous sensor that the s8/pixel2 uses and put an OIS in it? This is so stupid oneplus, i just dont get it..
Furthermore: Usb will again be 2.0.
2015 all over again..
Also, unlike the introductionary text of this forum suggests, battery will be the same as the OP5, 3300 mah. Thus, endurance will be lower compared to the 5.
And the device will also feature face recognition to unlock.
What do you think?
This is kinda disappointing. I was kinda missing my OnePlus 5 going to the pixel 2xl because I really loved the feel and everything on the o5. I was also thinking I should have waited on the 5t and hope they made some small improvements to the camera. This seems like a bit if a downgrade. Battery life will still be really good but slightly worse. I don't see why they couldn't have fitted in a slightly larger battery
Finally get to review it
Finally got my new glasses and can check all of the new great features With these phones. It has been a while since I bought a smart phoneBut the one plus is something that I there are just way too expensive.
I wonder if it possible cross-device ROMs between OnePlus 5 & 5T.

I think it will be possible. Since the changes are similar like 3 and 3t. Lets see
yeah, for me the missing ois is a deal breaker. I planned to upgrade from my op3t but now i will keep it. Hopefully they will learn from it and add a camera with ois for the 6
GSMArena have some shots in their hands-on here.
If you zoom in and look at what it's done to the foliage in the first 2 shots you might wish you hadn't. This would be considered poor in a low-light shot, never mind outdoor daylight. I just hope that this is pre-pre-production software that they stupidly gave to a reviewer and not what they are planning on selling.
Maybe anybody has a acutal review of the camera of the Oppo R11s?
It should have the same camera configuration and software "magic".
Results should be an indication for the possible camera performance of the OP5T.

Interesting. GSMarena comments on the lowlight pictures:
"We also went out for some night shots around the usual locations. We won't be passing any verdicts just yet, but the results look promising."
When they said the second camera would have f1.7 aperture (without probably mentioning the pixel size) I thought they would do something special to combine the result of both cameras and create nice pictures. I didn't expect that they only would use one of them....
OnePlus clearly doesn't know much about software photography, but they know a lot about marketing...

Well, the screen says 6.0 VS 5.5 But it's taller but thinner side to side. The total screen area should be the same or very close. I doubt enough to affect battery in any significant way. It's also a newer panel, so possibly more efficient than the old 5.5 which was a carryover from the previous OP.
The screen is not narrower but a lot longer so the real estate is quite bigger.
Its 136x68mm vs 122x68mm.
A few sites have mentioned the camera is a bit lackluster, but until we can get a good comparison between the 5 and 5T I'm not sure how to take these comments.

i feel so too, on the op5 the difference is huge in low light conditions with the hdr+
Unfortunately there isnt a port that works properly. Either no touch to focus or other drawbacks

And the microdots. It was too much of a hack for something I need to be reliable at least IMO.

It is still producing oil paintings in daylight though.
Mind boggling that this is still not fixed! The sensor is capable to produce better photos but the processing...

Someone needs to tell OnePlus that a little noise doesn't hurt as long as the photos come out sharp!
