Why didn't we get 7.1? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Why couldn't samsung simply rip out the spen junk from the note rom and release it on our phones?

Because they're working on Oreo

That's not a valid excuse, 7.1 came out in oct 2016, 7 months later the s8 was released with an os that came out in august 2016.
These are not midrange phones, we deserve better.

So what is your complaint exactly? You're angry about the fact that we didn't get a rom then, even though we're getting the latest version now? You knew about it, bought it, then came here to complain about it 7 months or so afterwards?
What was so important that changed from 7.0 to 7.1? I have a feeling you're just looking to whine about anything possible

My complaint is pretty clear, not sure why you can't see it.

When Android 7.1 was released, it was seen as a Nexus/Pixel exclusive with pixel-only exclusives. It's more surprising that the Note 8 did come with Android 7.1 than the S8 not getting an update. Most skinned manufacturers decided early on to skip 7.1 in favor of 8.0

Why didn't we get 6.1?
Samsung releases the major builds and frequent updates. We don't need stuff that's more suited for a pixel. If you're that concerned, buy a pixel.

Do we get 8.1 ?

Samsung only focus on main releases, 7.0 of samsung has all the stuff of the pure 7.1 with it's own UI

What's in the 8.1 that you'll be sorely missing?
If you expect every point update, get a Pixel.

Sorry I should have been more clear and misunderstood. By the time that 8.1 was out development on 8 would have already started.

Short answer. Do you seriously expect them to complile thousands of packages all over again for a version that changes basically nothing, only to do it all over again 2 months later for a major release?

Yes, that's their job, they dont get to take a year off after compiling one version of android. If they can release x.1 updates on the note they can do the same on the s8.

will the S2 Exynos (2015)edition get Nougat?

What do you think, will samsung limit Nougat on the S2 to the newer Snapdragon version of the tablet?
I dont think Samsung is going to have Nougat for S2. That will be in the Tab S3.
Yes, it's been reported that the T810 is testing and will be released soon.

As long as we have it by Easter, I will be happy. Nougat is awesome on my OnePlus 3 and the split screen mode will be great on the Tab S2.
Now this is interesting.

The rumours about Nougat is getting louder:
https://www.sammobile.com/2016/12/19/galaxy-tab-s2-running-nougat-surfaces-on-gfxbench/
My galaxy tab s2 wifi only (t710) is still in 5.0.2 on sammobile but thanks to flashing, I was able to get MM. Now I am worried that my tab s2 will not get a proper nougat update because the update rolls out only to LTE versions.
According to this source (https://news.samsung.com/global/samsung-begins-rollout-of-android-7-0-nougat) the "Galaxy Tab S2 (LTE unlock)" will be included in the Android 7.0 update rollout for Samsung devices this year. Seems legit, considering it's from Samsung themselves
I think the S2 will get Nougat. It's just a case of when and how good it will be?
However, I also think that will be it. Absolutely no chance at all of getting Android 8.
Given my experience with Samsung tablets, I'm not even clear T813 will see an update to 7.x.
That would be 2 in a row for me (poorly supported Samsung tablets), and probably my last purchase from them.

Guys Tab S2 9.7 is getting Nougat soon!
According to many sources, Samsung has already made Nougat & is testing it now (nougat benchmarks seen on GFXBench).

The problem is, who else is making good spec Android tablets with Amoled screens? From my point of view, MM is running well and has been for the last 6 months. A Nougat upgrade would be nice, (especially for the multi window mode,) but I wouldn't loose any sleep if it wasn't updated. They do need to release a recent security update though.
As my experience with the One Plus 3 has been so good, I'd like to see them shake Samsung up by entering the tablet market. I know it wont happen but I can dream.

It would be a great thing for the tablet market to have OP enter. (maybe not great for the OP bottom line, as the tablet market seems to be stagnant.. still I think there is room for a Nexus-like tablet.. and Google seems to have abandoned that niche)

For me, take a OP3, put it in the tab S2 body and I'd happily pay £400 (~$450) all day long. Of course, it would have to be running OOS.

Out of curiosity, how much did you have to give for it? I got my 32GB T813 as an impulse buy for $399 the other day, and while I've seen used ones for less, it felt like a decent deal for a new unit.

Galaxy Tab S2 (2015&2016) - Official Android 8.0 Oreo Update News

Hey guys!
I don't know if you already heard it but the Galaxy S6 lineup will probably receive Android 8.0. Many Samsung employees confirmed that and there is already a leaked list of devices which will get the update. Today I noticed that not only the S6 was mentioned on that list... the Galaxy Tab S2 will probably receive the update as well! In my opinion it is really great to see that the first premium devices from Samsung will get another update
What do you think?

Maybe we will get Samsung Experience 9.0 with the update. It would be very great to get some S8/S9 UI feauters
If Samsung's track record holds of two major version updates per flagship device, the 2016 Tab S2 should get Oreo. The 2015 may or may not - I guess it depends on whether Sammy is feeling generous.
I'm not sure who would hope their device doesn't get the update? While it's possible Samsung could pull an Apple stunt and kill performance with an Oreo update, that generally hasn't been an issue. In reality, it will just be security patches and support for newer apps. The days of new Android versions bringing sea changes of improvements appear to be in the past.

I agree Samsung seem to give 2 major updates to their flagships and higher spec devices.
The S2(2) should get Oreo. I'd say unlikely the S2(1)will see it.
As a 2015 owner, all I want for the last major update is a stable build without any major bugs. From then on, I'd just like the same build with the security updates. The current Nougat is pretty solid but the screen brightness does keep going up and down on some occasions.
i would love to see something for the 819N, i mean there isn't even any custom roms for that version of the tablet, i hope at least samsung goes oreo for it.

Probably 2016 model can hope for it because it has been shipped with 6.0 and also is not sure...but 2015 model should kill the idea because has been shipped with 5.0.1. Even if we could run oreo Sammy will never give a third major update to a 2015 device, even if the only difference between 2015 and 2016 is the CPU (correct me if i'm wrong)
I think it's crazy how Samsumg abandons its own products. I can understand their budget devices getting updates, but this is their only tablet line. Not to mention they were selling these for $400+ a pop (i got mine out of a pricing error for $200 though).
Just shows you that iPad should be the only tablet product to purchase from here on out... I think the last year and a couple months I've owned this it's been updated a whopping 3 times! Never again will I buy Samsung.

Tab s2 may be getting oreo (NOT 100%)

I was on the line with samsung+ and they told me that there are planning to release oreo for the tab s2,tab s3,galaxy s6 line, galaxy s7 line, galaxy s8 line as well as some other devices. Now this is NOT,and I wanted to get this clear,NOT 100% CONFIRMATION that tab s2 is getting oreo, they could change their minds about this, this isn't a press release,it's just samsung+ customer support, because I knew some people were gonna point out this isn't reliable but just wanted to let people know that tab s2 has a good chance of getting oreo

According to Sammobile, the Tab S2 is still on the "may or may not get Android 8.0" list. I doubt will ever get an official announcement from Samsung. It will either just show up one day or a year from now we can finally give up hope. There appears to be a fairly stable version of LineageOS 15.1 for those that can't (or don't want to) wait.

Yes, That would be the 719 IIRC, I've seen that there is an unofficial build now, but from the looks of it the microphone and/or calling is non functional. Maybe I'll try it in a few weeks, would be amazing just to have 8.1 vanilla on there.
Yeah, I'm interested into getting a Tab S2 8.0. The ones selling online nowadays are mostly the T719.
There's an unofficial Lineage ROM for it now, but the phone speaker and mic aren't working. But if we could just use a Bluetooth headset to mitigate this problem, then I'm OK with it, cos I'd much prefer the Lineage ROM.
I've posted this question in the Lineage ROM thread, but no one replied so far. Has anyone succeeded in using a Bluetooth headset with it?

The 2016 S2 shipped with Marshmallow, so I'm not sure that counts as an update. However, I don't entirely disagree with your overall point because of the tablet's age - even the newer S2 is hitting the 2 year mark, which usually means the end of the line for support.

Since when? I am on the latest update available for my T813 (January 2018 Security update) and it is NOT Oreo but still Nougat. Unless you are referring to custom ROMs which is true. But this thread is a discussion about stock .

February Security update (Retin) is out now !

I'm glad there is finally something came when I clicked the update button after a long time. And here it is, February security update after skipping January and releasing it after mid March, what a great speed of updates. I was hoping for Oreo but Motorola wants to take their time I think. Expected to get Oreo by mid April or they'll just troll us by pushing a March security patch.
Update is of 57mb if you're wondering.

I read about project treble, it seems the problem with slow updates is vendor implementation. Lenovo just want to slow updates for older phones so people will get frustrated and buy their new phones. It's just a theory, maybe something else is the problem for slow updates. I think in couple of months they'll push last updates to MZP, no expectations for Android P because how slow they are pushing updates, it seems like they just want to get rid of their older devices. It's a common market parctice so I don't have any problem but thanks to XDA developers for making custom roms so users can enjoy new android in older phones too.
They used to be so fast when they were Motorola.. now they are a Lenovo company and SLOW AS HELL.

So far so good but I have to check bugs other users are reporting. Some bugs, like stability, battery drain, etc. are showing up after couple of days. It's not clever to install update, test few things and then report right away that everything works.
