International compatibility - ZTE Axon 7 Questions & Answers

Looking at this as a decent replacement for a bricked 5x . Will the U.S. version work in Western Europe, specifically France?

Why not just buy a G version? Do you need it to work in the US and France? Or just France?
I was running a Huawei Mate 7 myself and had a work 5X. Got sick of having two phones so got the Axon 7. The 5X was a disappointing phone to me. Just did not have the quality. Not enough RAM or storage, rubbish screen, plastic build making it feel really cheap. The Axon 7 replaced both phones beautifully and is better in every single way.

Really just for the U.S. but will be traveling to France next year. My Nexus 5 worked well for me in Italy a few years ago too.

You should check the bands you need in the countries you would visit versus the bands available between the U and G versions of the Axon 7.
Why does the US insist on being so different to the rest of the world........

Normally US phones have very restricted bands support but because the Axon 7 is designed as a unlocked phone ZTE was really generous with the bands compatibility of the A2017U and I never had any problems living in Europe with it and always on 4g :good:

Thanks -- that's what I assumed. I'll just be using it in case of emergency and a bit of data (nice to have maps!). My other phones have always been compatible at some level for that sort of purpose.

Has anyone here actually ever owned a device made by Huawei? I'm concerned about the quality of the radio strength. I know some companies are known for having great radios, I've just never heard anything about Huawei's radios. Thanks for any info.
I can't speak for LTE, since my Ascend mate 7 is the 32gb version that doesn't have the bands that support LTE in the U.S.A, but strength for HSPA and HSPA+ have always been spot on. I've got absolutely no complaints in regards to signal strength with it. My only concern being lack of Band 12 support since the 6P apparently has not been certified to use it.

Thanks for the reply, it's reassuring! Google has stated its working hard with T-Mobile to have Band 12 on launch.

No problem! I'm actually updating my AM7 to Android 5.1.1 now (they released it today.. after skipping 5.0 - 5.1 entirely) to use until I get my 6P. Hoping to get some decent money on my G4 haha.
One thing to keep in mind is the fact that Huawei physically build a damned good phone. That's one thing I'm really looking forward to! Despite the stereotype surrounding Chinese made products, Huawei have made extremely well built phones.

Yeah, everything I've read says they make a premium built phone, just didn't want to get stuck with a crappy radio like my N4 and N5 had.

Wish I had a definite answer for your question but I'd like to think Google would mandate that the Nexus line have good radios now especially since they have a cell service of their own. What better way to make that service look good than to have your own phones consistently have good service on Project Fi
I have an ascend mate 2 and the 3g and lte have great strength.... No complaints.

Axon 7: Differences between versions

Morning all,
Can you tell me what the differences between the Chinese, USA and European versions are likely to be?
I need a new phone so that I can stop using my wife's old iPhone and had planned on getting the Axon 7.
But if the UK release isn't going to be until Q4 then I'd be looking into importing from China but I'd want to know what I'm likely to get.
Cheers, Patrick.
The only different will be LTE bands and Single or Dual SIM shouldn't be much differences between versions.
I would suggest to wait for us release and buy then. English and cheaper price are guaranteed
Will the US version be dual sim?
Sent from my HUAWEI MT7-TL10 using Tapatalk
There is nothing anywhere that lists specifications indicating that there is any single sim version. If there was one it would surely have been mentioned somewhere but I haven't seen anything.

US & Global variant comparison

We know for sure that there is two different version of the Axon 7, the one sold in North America and the one sold in Europe (and china ?), respectively named A2017U & A2017G.
It would be great to compare the hardware of both these version to see if there is any differences (besides network bands and software) or if they are the same except in name.
Can two persons with the two variants be kind enough to provide AIDA64 screenshots of the importants category listed in AIDA64 ?
Thanks !
The hardware of USA and EU are exactly the same, its just the software which is different.

Depending on how they did the antenna and power amplifier design, they could still be the same exact HW. The 820 SoC supports all those bands, so at some level, it's just programming the chipset and ROM on which to allow.

This was talked about a little in the webinar. They had been marketing 3140, but when they talked to the battery manufacturer, they had actually done 3250 mAh so they changed the marketing material to match. Since the Chinese phones were already released at that point, I'd be willing to bet there is some piece of code somewhere in there reporting the old values rather than the new values. Or ZTE or the battery manufacturer got something wrong.

I have the 4gb RAM, 128gb ROM version. It is Chinese but seems to work fine here in Australia...
Funnily enough, some of the problems complained about by the US owners aren't present on the Chinese version with no problems on English translations ( I have language set to English).
Camera has NEVER had a problem and build quality is fantastic with no problems.
It has slight differences in appearance, the major being the gold US version I've seen seems to have white antenna bars on back and headphone jack has a white collar, mine has slightly lighter gold bars for the antenna and goes gold to black interior for the headphone jack.
Other than a few apps that I can't seem to get from the playstore (starts to download and the playstore up and closes) there doesn't seem to be much other difference...
Firmware version is B07 and model is A2017...
Oh, and on Antutu Benchmark I get around 142000 just edging out One Plus 3 for top position, if benchmarks mean anything to you...

You should look at the LTE Bands supported, compare it to the ones used by your US provider and make up your own opinion, no?
Actually no, because over the years of buying unlocked phones I have found that ebay listings tend to lack these facts or are not trustworthy, especially when they are written overseas. I will not drop >$800 on a phone until I know for sure. I posted here since I figured some may already have experience with the handset. Thank you
Then you should wait. If ebay listings are the only source you can find for technical information on the p10 plus then don't risk your money.
Even if bands work you could end up with a Chinese model like what I got when I ordered a P9 Plus and didn't pay attention to model numbers. It wasn't a big deal, just took some time to get Google play installed. And some apps and settings not in English
I have a mate 9 china version and it works in Canada on Telus and Rogers network. Just FYI.
A spec list from huawei Chinese website for P10 Plus:
LTE FDD:Band1/2/3/4/5/7/8/9/12/17/18/19/20/26
TD-LTE: Band38/39/40/41(100M)
UMTS(WCDMA)/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA:Band1/2/4/5/6/8/19
TD-SCDMA:Band34/39 (移动主频段)
CDMA(主副卡二选一):BC0( 800MHz);(仅限中国电信(中国大陆+澳门))
GSM/EDGE:850/900/1800/1900MHz

So I'm not too thrilled about the 6 GB/64 GB version we're apparently getting in Canada, and am seriously considering getting an 8 GB/128 GB version on eBay, but I'm concerned about it being a Taiwanese SKU/serial.
Does anyone have any experience or thoughts as to whether it would work in Canada, if updates would come properly, etc - or better still if I could just flash it to the NA version on arrival, etc.? Thanks!

I am also super interested in the ability get an 8 GB version working on Verizon. If someone knows for sure a flash would get the correct bands and it's not a hardware issue, that would be terrific.
Buying the 8/256GB RAM/storage version in Europe.
At the moment I am only able to find this phone available for purchase in Sweden with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Does anyone know if a version with the highest specs will be available in the future? Why aren't the phone available with all options in every country? Where can I go to get a version with better specs?

From my testing, the unlocked version will pick up Verizon LTE bands but calls fail since there is no VoLTE option on the phone. Did not pick up any of their 3G signals, and their system would not accept my IMEI as a compatible device. So it may work if you can convince Verizon to add the phone to their system, which is unlikely since they already have their own version.
FWIW I also tried it with a Sprint SIM, but got no service whatsoever and their system would not accept the IMEI. Thew in a Cricket/AT&T SIM and the phone worked as expected.

Which LTE Bands are you getting?
I'm on T-Mobile,seems we only have Band 2 support on the WW unlocked 8GB/128 GB Model.
I've already initiated a return w/the e-Bay seller,more than likely,it's going back tomorrow.
I'd been OK with Bands 2 & 4,which are listed here:

The fact that they let this .pdf out & it's not even accurate speaks volumes for North American support:Tone-Deaf would be a compliment...............

I was able to get service on 4 and 13 for Verizon, and 2 and 12 for Cricket/AT&T. It may support more, but I'm not aware of any apps that will let me scan for service on all bands. LTE Discovery mentioned a "Potential eCSFB issue" with the Verizon SIM which is likely because there was no CDMA support.
Fun fact... apparently the phone supports XLTE with Verizon, which led to a rather depressing speed test compared to my service with Cricket.

THX!,just wanted to make sure we were talking about the same model phone.
I'm gonna give it one more day,get around town & see if the connectivity is OK.
If spotty (w/Band 2 only) ,I'm sending it back,or,selling it on Swappa.
Outside of sparse LTE Band support,it's a nice phone,I really don't wanna part w/it so soon after getting it.
Haven't tried out the AR/VR Capabilities yet, but,I do like the display & the speaker quality/loudness.
TBH,I'm covered in WI-FI Most of the time, but,I did expect better LTE Band support nevertheless, especially for a DualSIM/Unlocked phone.
The fact that it's being sold on Amazon as-is seems to be Asus shooting themselves in the foot, certainly there'll be quite a few returns, once people find out connectivity is less than ideal for an unlocked phone, one that is marketed to the US/North America.
Update on mine, battery life is getting better now as the phone settles in. NOT impressed with Data though. I was in the country yesterday, my ASUS Zenpad had 2 bars of 4G and the Zenfone was in roam. Everything else is great, and living without root is bearable, I guess. Fortunately, my 7 year high score on Klondike is an X-Box Live/Google Play game and the score were carried over from the X Box cloud. I know that sounds silly but 7 years over multiple devices is a long time to build up a high score and was a major stress point going to a locked down device
