So my new Exec turned up today, along with a new SIM card, marked 3G.
Do I need to use this card?
My current SIM works fine in it, but Im wondering if I need to put in the new one, call Cust Services and have it enabled, or can I get the 3G service on my existing SIM?

if in stand gprs area , you get a G at top of screen
if in 3G area you get a U
Does that mean I have to use and register the 3G SIM? As far as I was aware, the SIM doesnt actually provide any functionality - its the service class your contract has?

3G and GSM SIMs are different. Only with a 3G SIM can you use UMTS (3G services). Please check with O2, they may be transferring your number to the new SIM from the old - which would be a good thing if you want fast data download (max speed around 384kbps)
not true, my voda sim of over two years is now 3G enabled...
@twaddle, you're right it is possible to have a SIM that is GSM and UMTS. Did a bit of research and found SIM cards can function in GSM and UMTS modes. This has not been true for "3" network, however.
I'm not really sure the old SIM can be used to received 3G, I've just upgraded and got my old number transfer to the 3G sim, it works after a few hours. If the old one worked then why would they bother giving out the new sim?
Can a regular SIM work on a 3G network? Or to be able to access 3G, does a 3G SIM need to be used? If so, can a regular SIM's info be copied over to a 3G and it will work?

If services provider supports 3G than only thing u have do is to call the services
provider and subscribe for same . I think no need to change the SIM...
Recently was released the patch "Patch_Acer_1.0_WM65_GPS signal.exe" that "Resolves the problem ONLY where the GPS signal is lost when using a 2G SIM card"

how can I tell if a sim is 2G or 3G ?!?!?
I have a 128K Tim Italy sim, but nobody can tell me whether it is 2G or 3G .... :-(

Hi surely your tim 128k can t be only a 2g sim card,i think that in italy no operatores have 2g sim cards
I thought so too, because with my sim the data connection works fine in 3G and 3G + (HSDPA).
But Somewhere on the internet I read that the "3G SIM" are 1Mb new generation sim

Hey guys i have one plus two and its running on oxygen os 3.1.0 i am facing problems on my one plus two i.e first of all i have 2 sim cards one jio 4g n other is vodafone india both sims were running perfectly on my moto g4plus previously now when i have one plus two i got it from my brother so i put jio sim on sim1 it was showing no network and then i put vodafone on sim2 then i didnt got any network unless in disabled my jio card i am getting network on my vodafone but the problem is that after making call network get lost and come back again after 2 seconds and then i can call once and i need to manully search for network on my vodafone sim if it cand find network both sims still work great on moto g4 is it problem with my device only ?
and now i have network on my sim2 vodafone and set to 2g only and wen i enable sim 1 both network get lost and its unable to register on any netwokr on siim 1 and on sim 2 it wont search!
please help me out

Jio is not fully supported on this phone, partly due to missing VoLTE support in firmware and partly because of how Jio doesn't support GSM/2G which is the standby mode for the secondary SIM as the phone doesn't support dual 4G mode. In other words, if first SIM is in 4G mode, second is forced to 2G, and this of course causes problems for Jio SIM.

1) one sim to be 4G/LTE (data + voice) and second sim to be 3G (voice) ?
2 ) or second sim is only 2G (voice)
