ZTE Z958 Marshmallow Update WITHOUT ATT SIM - ZTE ZMAX Questions & Answers

AT&T requires an active SIM in order to do a software update.
I don't have an active AT&T SIM so is there any way update my ZTE Z958 to Marshmallow

Downloaded from ZTE USA to SD Card and installed
https://www.zteusa.com/zte-zmax-2-att

DELETED!

I also need to upgrade my AT&T ZTE Z958 to Marshmallow. I'm still on Lollipop.
I can't do it over-the-air, so I want to install the update from my SD card. The link provided above no longer works. Does anyone know where to get the bits to upgrade to as high of a version of Android as possible? I need to get off Lollipop since some apps that I use are no longer supported on that Android version.

Still stuck on Android 6.01 with no OTA update

Had my A2017G for a few months, but still stuck on v1.0.0b06 with no available OTA updates.
Will I manually have to flash it to a android 7 version then will I be able to receive OTA?
Any guidance is much appreciated.
It really depends on where your device is from. That build may very well be the most up-to-date build released. Check the ZTE support site to be sure.
If you want to go to nougat right away, I'd suggest manually installing the German update zip / installing the leaked 7.1.1 B01 zip floating around. Afterwards, you'll receive the OTA prompt for the 7.1.1 B02 build.

Yes, you need to download nougat image from ztedevices then push it to SD card and update to nougat will be available via system updater.

I'm in the UK, and had no update since getting the handset.
So I won't need a build 10 to do the update to nougat?
Many thanks

I forgot if it's required. But no harm in doing the updates incrementally. The German support page has the B10 update, as well as the 7.0 update. Then the 7.1.1 B01 leak can be found around here. These of course are all for the A2017G variant.
If you intend to unlock your bootloader, I'd suggest doing so before upgrading to nougat.

Thanks. I'll give that a try when I'm home. Is this becoming stuck on certain software versions common on the A7?
Also in hoping in the future OTA works normally. Apart from this, the phone is solid all-around.
Many thanks
I have one german version... live in argentina, and otas comes really fast... the same day that someone post some info here...
I manually update to 7.0, then manualy to 7.11 b1, then ota notifies me that b02 is relased, so manual update dont break otas...
I have a full stock phone, locked bl and nothing changed

There is a full 7.1.1 B02 somewhere that you can also use. Just use the MiFlash flasher thing, it shouldn't go bad if you're using the stock flasher

This is the full ota for V1.2.0B01: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=457095661767151720
I'd suggest you manually update to V1.0.0B10 and then to V1.2.0B01.
You can find t he V1.0.0B10 on the ztemobile.de page: http://www.ztemobile.de/support/downloads/?product_id=2100 (Software Update B10)
I'd skip going to Nougat 7.0 first. Just upgrade directly to 7.1.1 with the full ota I posted.
Copy both of the files onto your sd card. They will then appear in the Updater (Settings -> Updates). Just run the upgrade from there.
Be aware! As previously stated by @oleung4 unlock your bootloader before upgrading. I unlocked mine on B06.

It gets more complicated starting with (afaik) V1.0.0B11. If you want the easy way I'd suggest you do it before you upgrade past B10, I would even say do it before upgrading from B06.

First: Check that you didn't put the zip with the buncha numbers. If you open the zip you should find an update.zip and a pdf or something, and you have to use the update.zip inside. NOT directly the one with the numbers!
Second: Your phone probably won't find the file on the OTG, if so just copy the file from the OTG to the root of the internal storage
Ah....
I unzipped it.....
Okay so still no joy, neither of the files would update
"System Update Failed"
Attached screenshots if anyone can help ??

You almost brick the phone. Tell me a couple of things:
-What's the model? Turn it around and look below the Dolby Atmos symbol, it should be etched there. Either A2017 or G or U.
-I see that your software is of the A2017G. You probably have an A2017.
-What's the version that you downloaded? If it is for another version you can lose the IMEIs.
I have a similar issue. I have an A2017G. I had LOS on and am trying to go back to stock. I can get MM B10 or B11 to load, but N B01 won't flash within Android and if I force it from within recovery, the phone won't boot. anyone any smart ideas?

ZTE Axon Mini 7 Firmware

Hi All

Next time read before doing With 7.1 there is no longer bootloader mode. Downgrade to 6. Also you dont need to unlock it, there is no better ROMs for this rom. Official one is best. I tried them, so you can save time and use official one.
ALso root not working well with it. I had root but somehow i couldn't delete system apps.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread, if so, I can start another.
I recently purchased this phone (B2017G) from Gearbest as well.
It is still on 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
I have been searching for the right update file, starting with the US version, since that is where I live, but no go. The bootloader says
"E footer is wrong
"E:signature verification failed
"E: open file /cache/fota/error_code error erno = 2
'Installation aborted'
Am I right in thinking I need to find the update with the right signature? I have tried US, Austrian and Russian official ZTE updates with no success so far.. Am I on the right track?
US ZTE Support was as helpful as they could be, but were not familiar with the GearBest global variant. They sent me to the global support site, which won't let me use it, since I'm from the US, lol
Any suggestions? I'm going to try the German update from earlier in this thread after I get home tonight, by the way...
I also purchased mine from Gearbest (B2017G). I believe the phone is for the European market as it comes with a EU plug in the sealed box, but not sure for which country. I tried the firmware for the Spanish model http://www.ztedevice.com/support/detail?id=D4454D33442F45E192A95718509F4586. The update failed.
I just flashed the Nougat 7.1.1 an hour ago from here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73257562&postcount=13.
It already looks promising - the phone is very cool after update. Previously the phone is always warm, even in standby. I hope the battery life is a big improvement.
If you intend to flash this zip file, make sure your phone is a European model B2017G. As posted before I got this phone from Gearbest as many others.
Hi,
Updated to 7.1.1 by OTA 3 weeks ago when i bought the phone from Amazon.
It seems that we'll get Oréo later...amazing ! thks ZTE !
It is not official that Axon 7 Mini (B2017G) will get Android 8 aka Oreo. ZTE should do the update to Oreo as this is one popular phone still.

Once you downgraded and rooted can you upgrade back and keep the root?
Root is needed for this phone because it doesn't allow to move ANY app to SD.I sort of recovered the backup of my apps and data with Helium without root, but I need more internal space: with root you can even enable adoptable storage.
If only we can get access bootloader and flash modified boot.bin with magisk...
At the moment I can only use it as backup phone, my everyday phone LG G5 has 7gigs of whatsapp stuff that can only be internal, but most part of the 130+ apps I got are shared in the SD card.
I don't even need TWRP actually, just root to move apps to SD (or a firmware that allows it, since it's a firmware option...ZTE decision)
Flashing nougat 7.1.1 is the best thing I've done - it basically fixed the battery drain. I had to charge 3 times a day before the update. Last night the battery was only down 3%. This morning I recharged it to 93% before I left for work. At 5pm after a days normal use, it still had 55% left. It's just amazing. I think the update flashed out all the nastiest including the suspicious apps that come with the phone. I have no idea what they are - 99003, 99033, 99035 and more. I suspect they are malware although I cant be sure. They consume battery and keep the phone awake. The phone was warm even in standby.

Stock one
Got the 7.1.1 update...
... in a round-about way. Went here http://www.ztedevice.com/support/detail?id=6CCC18CC9451416C8A01BED5174B5762#software and it downgraded my phone to a December 2016 security update.
Flashed the Russian 6.0.1, (had to use the bootloader method for both), then was able to run the Spanish update from ZTE, directly from the System updates menu after extracting the 'update.zip' file from the package and placing it in the root of the SD.
Now running 7.1.1 and happy. I can still access AT&T's US network perfectly, so I didn't destroy the usefulness of my new phone as a phone.
I may eventually put a second T-Mobile sim in it if I think I can live without the SD card's storage...
Edit: I am running a GearBest-purchased phone with 'global' firmware, meaning no official updates available. It is possible that I could have tried to use the Spanish 7.1.1 directly, but I didn't try that before taking the route I did. Just happy *something* worked!
Still no root? Even a firmware where I can patch boot.img with magisk and repack and flash?
I did it with Ulefone S8Pro, but because someone here posted the firmware and it was editable and flashable without getting errors! No TWRP, but who cares, I have adoptable storage and Is essential with those "low" internal memory phones....
A ZTE moderator on the official US site has disconfirmed my report of Oreo on Axon 7 Mini:

Zte a2017gv1.0.0b11

Hi everyone !
i have many issues and limitations on my ZTE Axon 7 like battery drain and problems to connect with google account, remove or change it etc. Basically I'm not allowed to do anything telling me I dont have admin rights.. I tried already many solutions to sort these issues but none worked. Even if I do a factory reset I will still encounter same issues. I have european version of the phone I'm on build number ZTE A2017GV1.0.0B11, MIFavor UI 4.0, Android 6.0.1, Kernel 3.18.20 and I want to upgrade it to B35 or a much more recent version. The update in the settings is telling me 'software up to date' so cant do it automatically.
Which version would you advise to have the most efficient and less limitative interface (maybe even avoid overlayers from zte) ? could you help me explaning how to choose and do an upgrade with all detailed steps? also I am wondering if any problem with upgrading and my phone doesnt work can I do a factory reset or nothing and do I lose the warranty doing so? I am looking for most simple way to do so (for a newbie)
thanks a lot !
Download the A2017G B08 Nougat ROM, put the update.zip in the root of SD and use the system update app. From that ROM there is a new Nougat B10 update as a precursor to updating to Oreo soon.

B35 is US. You have to use B08 or 09. But yeah, just update to B08
The Nougat V1.2.0B10 just released. You may get it from the ZTE Germany page.
@ko_wei13 is it compatible to update from ZTE A2017G V1.0.0B11 to V1.2.0B10 ? if I download it from the german website can I set any language after update?
@RobboW on which website can I find / download right package of the A2017G B08 Nougat ROM compatible with my build version?

Yes, minimum requirement to update to Nougat is V1.0.0B11. So you can download the file and place it under the root directory of your phone storage and the system update will automatically detect it.
For language, there is no issue for you to change it as the ROM is for global, not limit to German.
I flashed it on my G. Had a couple of glitches but mostly ok. They say you should do a major update after a factory reset. I didn't but the glitches were minor and it seems to be working ok now.
thanks worked great !
@yann360,
Hi,
Yeah, you can set most language in your phone. You can upgrade your phone via SD card.
Thanks!

If its not letting you I don't think you can. Just try to get on PC and update through samsung kies.
You can also go on sammobile.com and download the latest software/firmware and ODIN it to your phone. Instructions are right on the website as well as the latest ODIN software.

I dont know what happened but when I check root again after two hours i got this:
so is it any better than the last MM update?
I checked and i dont have OTA marshmallow. .i dont have pc to try with samsung kies
i have installed it on my EUR phone and it flies as a first impression , security patch update august 2018 though. will report battery life later in the week
Can i change something in phone to get update? Why is happening this? Why i dont have update OTA? Does anyone have this problem and how is fixed? My big problem is that i dont have pc..
If your phone is rooted there may be a program that disables the update applications (com.samsung.sdm and com.samsung.sdmviewer if I remember correctly). What applications (other than stock) are on the phone, such as titanium backup, app quarantine, etc.
Now if someone rooted the phone to make it work with your phone network or other software you use this update may disable the phone and/or software requiring root.
Andrew
I dont have any app in phone that need root for working.
I found and install this SDM but i need a phone to connect with..
can you give ne a little more explanation of this app? What do i need to do when I install it?
I dont have anyone app in phone that need root to work.
Can you give me a litlle more explanation abot this SDM, i found and install it on phone but..i dont know how to use it
Was it not already on the phone? This app automatically checks for OTA updates and downloads them.
You can open settings, scroll all the way down to the 'system' section, click on 'system updates' and then select 'check for updates'. Just make sure you have mobile data connection of some kind. (Cell or Wifi).
SDM should be installed on the phone unless someone specifically removed it. Of course be careful what you download and install. Lots of malicious software out there... If you had the ability to see the 'system update' option in settings, you already had the com.samsung.sdm package and did not need to install anything.
Was this phone sold by your carrier/provider originally or is it one you bought online and was made to work with your carrier/provider?
It is from provider Tmobile.
I give my phone to service provider and pay 10€ and thay put 6.0.1 marshmallow to my phone.
When i get back to my home,I get info that I can update android.
I have download the update, 300mb but when i try to install it,i cant. I get some update error.
Does anyone know what is this update? And how to install it? I have download a couple of times but its always the same. Can not update.
I finally have Marshmallow 6.0.1, but I cant install this next update.

Galaxy S6 Edge+ Android version upgrade help.

Hello, total newbie here. I've been searching around trying to find out how to manually update my android version to at least oreo 8.0 (due to a certain app). Or is it time to move on and grab a new phone?
As far as what I've done, I've gotten the bare basics of checking for updates on my settings and my current OS version (7.0). All it tells me is that I'm currently up to date. I've checked the manufacturer's website and it also told me that 7.0 is the official version of the phone (at least from my understanding unless I'm wrong which is very possible). I've tried looking around for manually upgrading the version and most recommend that I shouldn't because the device might not fully support the version and cause problems.
