[Guide] (2017.12.07update) How to root ur Mate9 oreo (emui 8.0) - Huawei Mate 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

First of all, sorry for my awesome English.i am praticing my writing
if u understand Chinese, congratulations!these is the Chinese version:
Notice:
A. Warning! Flash phone might get it bricked. I am not responsible for it.
B. Phone is already Oreo firmware.
C. i cant guarantee these is no needless steps , but at least , i execute the steps from a to m, and i succeed to root my mate9 oreo {MHA-AL00 8.0.0.334(C00)}
-----------------------2017.12.07 update---------------------------
sorry for so many needless steps of the old method.
root mate9 emui8 now only need 2 steps (so please neglect the old method).
new method:
1. reboot to fastboot mode . and fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk this
2. reboot to recovery mode. flash supersu 2.82 sr5 mod. (download link)
done!
ps: i have compared the "supersu 2.82 sr5 mod" to official supersu 2.82 sr5
the only different is:
the 683th line of file: "/META-INF/com/google/android/update-binary"
official package is : TRY="boot_a BOOT_A $TRY"
and the mod package is: TRY="ramdisk_a RAMDISK_A $TRY"
so the the mod package can be trusted i think.
that's all !
as the Chinese popular saying goes: 无图无真相!( no pictures! no truths ! )
but i dont know how to upload my picture, imgur?tumblr? anybody teach me?
HOPE THE ABOVE IS CLEAR.
GOOD LUCK
----------------------------------------------------------------
old method ( too many needless steps, please read the new method!):
Prepare:
1. FunkyHuawei Mate 10 Root/Rebranding tool (find lastest release here)
2. TWRP 3.1.1-0 for Mate 9/EMUI 8 (click me)
3. HWOTA8 Package ( get it from this post)
4、update_data_public.zip & update_all_hw.zip for the corresponding version you need (mine is MHA-AL00 8.0.0.334(C00), you can find wat u need at here)
5、supersu 2.82 SR5 (donwload link ,we only need the superuser.apk in /common.)
steps:
a. Unlock bootloader (backup all the data you need before this step)
b. Decompress the HWOTA8 Package on ur PC.
c. Copy the TWRP 3.1.1-0 to this folder (created by Decompression ),and rename this recovery img file (TWRP 3.1.1-0) to "TWRP8_3.0.3.img"
d. Connect ur mate9 to PC by USB cable and Use Vol-Dn +Power to boot into fastboot mode.
e. Use "Replace_Recovery.bat" in the folder (created by Decompression ) to flash TWRP recovery
f. Disconnect USB cable, use Vol-Up + Power to boot into TWRP
g. Format Data in TWRP, and connect USB cable again.
h. Reboot into fastboot mode .
i. Decompress FunkyHuawei Mate 10 Root/Rebranding tool Package on ur PC.
j. Run the "FHMate10Tool.exe" and choose Option 1 to root. and it will reboot later
k. Phone reboot ---> appare the warming interface ( it said:your device has been unlocked and cant trusted blablalba..... ) ---> appare the huawei welcoming interface -----> suddenly, phone reboot. notice!: please keep USB cable disconnecting from ur Phone. and after phone reboot suddenly , keep holding the Power + Vol up as fast as u can to reboot to recovery mode. (ps: why do we hold the keys as fast as u can? because it will prevent ur rebooting phone enter the huawei welcoming interface again. if the huawei welcoming interface appearing we cant execute the step l following)
l. flash the update_data_public.zip & update_all_hw.zip in TWRP. and reboot to system .
m. if supersu is not installed, please install supersu 2.82 SR5 manually.
the step k & l is not necessary, but recommended. because if you neglect them, u cant use the Theme( i am sure) and other.... important things (maybe) .

thanks very much!!!!!!

there are two posts told me how to update mate9 from nougat to oreo
1. https://romprovider.com/2017/11/update-emui-8-0-huawei-mate-9/
2. https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9/how-to/guide-mate-9-flash-oreo-update-package-t3699522
notice:
a. the part of post 1 --"2.1 Method 1 using HWOTA Tool–" works on my mate9 Android N (emui 5.0) .
b. the part of post 2 --"Downgrade Nougat" works on my mate9, i succeed to downgrade to Nougat emui5.0 MHA-AL00C00B233.
c. the attachment of the post 1 seem to be designed to work on mate9 pro(because of the "LON") , so i modified the package to fit mate9. i don't know if it's neccessary.
i have wrote a guide,but it's in Chinese . 2rd floor (2#) of this post
Good Luck!

I want to restore my Mate 9 to stock recovery and have used Huawei Update Extractor to extract the Oreo 1.9GB Update.app.
Which of the following files should I use to fastboot flash the stock recovery?
RECOVERY_RAMDIS.img 32MB

RECOVERY_VENDOR.img 16MB

/recovery has a new name "recovery_ramdisk" in mate9 oreo
if you want to flash stock recovery , you should execute " fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk xxxxxxxxxxxxx.img" in fastboot mode.
"RECOVERY_RAMDIS" may be refer to "recovery_ramdisk", so try to execute " fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk RECOVERY_RAMDIS.img" in fastboot mode.
i'm not sure.

VNS-L31 Vodafone bricked

Hello, sorry for my bad English. I have the following problem. I have problem with my phone QISVNS-L31 Vodafone, After updating to android nougat via firmware finder, I got some cut beta version, and then I used rollback recovery to marmalow. The phone started, but the problem with the google account followed, I tried a flash again on a rollback recovery and the phone was bricked. Restarts and stuck on the Huawei logo. After reading the forums, I unlocked the bootloader, I did everything as described for recovery img's system, boot, recovery, via a fastboot menu but continues to stand on the Huawei logo. Please help me how to fix it
@k1ll3r8e I read a lot of topics and I saw that you helped many people to solve their problems. Would you help me in my case

Now i download vns-l31c432b370full, extract recovery from update.app via (extractor). boot into the bootloader via fastboot reboot-bootloader (command), fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.1.1-0-venus.img, But i can not get in to recovery via (vol+ & power).
If I'm wrong somewhere, I would ask you to explain in more detail how to do it because I obviously miss something and I'm not getting things. Thank you in advance. I've been trying to fix it for 12 hours, and I'm already desperate. If I need a Team Viller to let you go if it's easier.

Now im in the TWRP Mode what is the next step ?
Sbodurov88 said:
I apologize for the blunt question, but I'm totally wrong. Which firmware must download now before following the steps in the previous post? Because I think I totally overwhelmed it and if there was a way to start everything from the beginning of the clean one it would be best, because I do not remember how many different firmwares and recovery's I installed. Again, I apologize for stupid questions and that I do, but I really do not know what to do next.

Nope, u can't... Because, how should a N recovery work on an MM kernel? Just do what i wrote, or don't do it... I don't confirm u any step u have to... I wrote a really detailed list of things to do. I do not have a USB-Debugging because I have not yet managed to bring the phone to a home screen. After yesterday's procedures, I installed a toolkit. I managed to update from the DUAL / Single Sim menu (upgrading the L31C432B130 single sim). I followed these steps by step 7) flash the L21C432B130 DS oeminfo with the toolkit (Dual-/Single-SIM tab) (after this step my bootloader is locked)
8) do not let the device reboot (on the reboot attempt when the device turns off, press and hold [Vol-Power])
9) flash the recovery from the L21C432B370 update.app and extracted befores (
10) copy the L21C432B130 update.app to ur sd-card (dload)
11) Place the sd-card inside the device (still booted in fastboot)
12) unplug the device from any kind of usb connection
13) hold power until the device turns off
14) start immediately, when the screen is black, pressing [Vol + Vol
. But the device did not start updating the SD card update.
I unlocked the bootloader again, I returned TWTP recovery and tried to do the steps again from the start, but the toolkit no longer recognizes my device.
Apparently I will not be able to do it myself, is there any help you can help me through Team Viewer or similar program because I have already lost hope. I apologize once again that I do so much, but I just can not handle it myself.

Heyho,
in that case that u can't boot into the system, u simply need to deactivate the "device check" in my TK, then every device will be detected even an HTC...
Also i hope u don't flashed a L21 oeminfo... Because u don't quote the steps i wrote u on this thread...
So what have u did now in detail?
U flashed the oeminfo (L31C432B130)?
U flashed after that the stock recovery (L31C432B130)?
U started the update from sd?

Then, Follow the Following Steps to Flash Mi 6X Firmware on your A2
First Make Sure you already unlocked bootloader flashing and flashing critical ("fastboot flashing unlock" and "fastboot flashing unlock_critical")
1) Install Qualcomm Driver (next next next) (Also Windows update can do this trick when you plug )
2) Install QPST (use setup from the QPST Alternative folder. )
(find QFİLL on start menu or qpst installed directory), open QFİLL from start menu or opst installed folder.
3) Select Flat Build Mode
Select Programmer File prog_emmc_firehose_Sdm660_ddr.elf ( already changed no arb risk )
Select XML files rawprogram0 and patch0.xml

From this section you can either install MIUI 10 (OREO) or Custom ROM ( Which one you want )
Guide will be Resume about flashing MIUI 10 ( OREO )
Flash TWRP

Welcome to MIUI 10 without arb
You can use MiFlash Tool 2016 64Bit only this one works good others may stuck sometimes and risky because if you unplug when installing you have to use test point method for saving phone.
You can enable camera2api with "Camera2api enabler" on play store (ONLY MIUI 10 OREO)
If qfill installation somehow corrupt use "QPST Alternative" folder or Miflash from above
You can Download Newer MIUI Releases from here
Just make sure to delete the "firmware-update folder" using winrar etc.
-------
UPDATİNG TO MIUI 10 PIE
Download MIUI 10 PIE from here (if you are in mobile press "try download anyway" )
Open zip file and delete "Firmware Upgrade" folder from the zip (Most İmportant)
Boot into TWRP
Go Wipe / Advanced Wipe
Wipe "System + Dalvik + Cache + Data"
(Make sure you are using ext4 file system on Cache and Data partition)
Flash MIUI 10 Pie zip
Flash Hex Kernel download from here (We need this because we are not using fw update folder for updating kernel etc (because its trigger arb 4))
Flash Magisk if you want root
Reboot to system
Welcome to MIUI 10 Pie
You can check new mıuı eu updates from here.
For enabling camera2api on MIUI 10 Pie you have to edit build prop download this application from play store
Give root permissions
Search for HAL3 then change boot of them 0 to 1

1. Flash any custom ROM or MIUI 10 ROM firmware-update folder deleted.
2. Flash the zip from here via TWRP.
3. Reboot
------
Convert Back to A2
Download latest a2 stock rom.
Put phone to edl mode again (fastboot oem edl)
Flash stock rom via QFİLL with same method (Select .ddr and xml files from stock rom folder) and power up.
Done.
(If you have wifi camera or splash screen problems. Flash stockrom with miflash on fastboot (vol down + power ) again.)
(Alternative) You can use MiFlash Tool 2016 64Bit to convert back.
Select A2 stock rom folder.
Put phone to edl mode (fastboot oem edl).

You don't need TWRP to install Magisk; for that matter, they can't be installed simultaneously on EMUI 9 together anyway.
The EMUI 9 method for Magisk is to patch recovery_ramdisk.img extracted from update.app, flash the patched image, and boot to recovery from then on. (Huawei made it impossible to load a custom ramdisk on Pie otherwise.)
Thank you irony_delerium for info's, but is there not a tutorial explaining the steps of modification ?

1) Make sure you've got the stock firmware zip files. (I'm assuming you do.)
2) Extract UPDATE.APP from the main update.zip file (the big one).
3) Using Huawei Firmware Extractor on your desktop (search on XDA for it), load UPDATE.APP and extract the recovery ramdisk image. It's going to be "RECOVERY_RAMDIS" in that app as I recall.
4) Put the image into your phone's internal storage (MTP works, though I've never used it, I usually use adb: adb push RECOVERY_RAMDIS.img /sdcard)
5) Install Magisk Manager on your phone. You want the current release (18.1) at the very minimum. Canary builds also work
6) Select the Install button in the Magisk interface. Select "Patch boot image". In the file browser that comes up, select the image you just transferred in #4.
7) When Magisk finishes, pull the image back to your PC (adb: adb pull /sdcard/Download/patched_boot.img)
8) Reboot to the bootloader and flash (fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk patched_boot.img)
9) Reboot to recovery (fastboot reboot, pull the USB cable and hold volume up).
Thank you irony_delerium ; very clear tutorial ; on the other hand, in UPDATE.APP there are 2 RECOVERY files : RECOVERY_RAMDIS.img and ERECOVERY_RAMDI.img which do the same weight; patching MAGISK with RECOVERY_RAMDIS.img I arrived at a system error and a dialogue asking me to either erase the data, or a factory restore; on the other hand with ERECOVERY_RAMDI.img it was installed alone? does it seem normal to you?

Hello
If you wouldn't mind confirming a few things from your post, as I'm trying to do this.
Is the sole purpose of extracting the big file to extract the recovery_ramdis ? You don't mention if anything is done with the big file.
The ADB commands didn't work for me, (error: push requires an argument).
But, I sent the recovery_ramdis via magisk manager, and it worked, then advised me that it put the image in /storage/emulated/0/Download/patched_boot.img but I can't find that location.
OK, edit ... I found the file and flashed it, rebooted into recovery and I get the message software installation failed.
I've had a whole lot of failures, phone won't root despite magisk giving no errors, dload won't work, superSU won't work.
Update .... root decided to work out the blue so I tried EMUI flasher and it looked like it was going to work ... but failed the update at about 10%.
Update - Bricked.

I have the latest security patch(March 1, 2019), I've been searching for the past 3 days for a working method to root my mate 10 lite, found nothing.
Huawei stopped providing oem unlock codes, All the services that provided unlock codes for money are now obsolete too.
I'm trying to find a way to root this phone on my own, but I'm not sure where to go from here.
I've read this book today "XDA Developers' Android Hacker's Toolkit", but it teaches how to use rooting methods that are already out there and not how to create your own way to root a device.
Can you provide guidance on where to go from here to learn how to find vulnerabilities in android?

Sorry, I misread. xD
Well, you can either flash TWRP for Oreo. Not sure which is "best" though, take one with decryption support if available for RNE on Oreo. Then you flash Magisk zip in twrp.
Or you can take your stock ramdisk and patch it in Magisk Manager, then flash the patched ramdisk from fastboot.
I would provably go with TWRP and Magisk zip though, as you would need a stock ramdisk from an update.app of your build. So saves some downloading
Basically flash TWRP using fastboot: fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk twrp.img
Reboot to recovery which will end up in TWRP. Flash latest Magisk using the Install button in twrp.

I can't find any TWRP with decryption. This one might work, it's from the MorfuZ thread: https://mega.nz/#!uD4FlCqL!ERBzP4ZWa2sR8f_wnn15F_cOFCdYVKgfYETjiehQkkQ
So it may or may not have working decryption. But if you have an external SD it doesn't really matter as you'd only transfer magisk to that.
Magisk from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
Download latest stable.
Flash twrp using fastboot.
Reboot to recovery.
Transfer magisk zip to external SD.
Flash Magisk zip using the Install button
You will probably have to browse to /external_sd manually as it will default to /sdcard in the install browser.
If it fails to install using TWRP:
Open terminal in TWRP from the Advanced button then enter this command:
dd if=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/ramdisk of=/external_sd/ramdisk.img
This will dump your stock ramdisk to external sd, which you then can patch in Magisk Manager and flash the output file to 'ramdisk' using fastboot. You will have to install Magisk Manager apk first though, it can be found in the Magisk thread.

Then there is another solution - install TWRP over eRecovery (my own experience) :
- copy to SD card TWRP-oreo-smart.img
- in main TWRP menu tap Install image, then navigate

eRecovery_ramdisk and confirm Flash . System
reboot.
- Download and copy to the Minimal ADB and fastboot folder RECOVERY_RAMDISK330.img

Connect your phone to PC in fastboot mode and install recovery_ramdisk using command

Then there is another solution - install TWRP over eRecovery (my own experience) :
- copy to SD card TWRP-oreo-smart.img
- in main TWRP menu tap Install image, then navigate
to the TWRP-oreo-smart, select
eRecovery_ramdisk and confirm Flash . System
reboot.
- Download and copy to the Minimal ADB and fastboot folder RECOVERY_RAMDISK330.img

Connect your phone to PC in fastboot mode and install recovery_ramdisk using command
- fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk RECOVERY_RAMDISK330.img
- fastboot reboot

Okay, one can install Magisk without TWRP. There are plenty of guides on how to do these things in the Mate 10 forums. Of course, TWRP makes things easier ....

Emui 9 with Root Honor 8 pro ( tested by myself ...root 100% working ! ) July 2019

Hello guys , [ UPDATE ROOT for EMUI 9.1.0.210 .. at bottom ... there are some minor changes]
been reading here and there for a working root but didn't work and my worries to get phone locked / bricked / bootloop
was increasing at any failed test !
THIS method WILL WORK i tested it today and worked ! I'm gonna upload also my magisk recovery_ramdisk PATCHED (read later) so you can skip few steps !
let's start
(steps are copied by Athanatos81 post here in XDA that's basically what i applied with some minor changes )
I. Rooting your device
1. be sure ADB / fasboot are working on your pc(drivers) and smartphone - INSTALL magisk manager Magisk Manager
2. Download the patched file for your device and copy it to Minimal ADB & Fastboot folder.
( you can use my magisk recovery_ramdisk PATCHED it's created by using update.app from update.zip file of EMUI BUILD 9.0.1.175(C432E3R1P5)
that means IF you are on emui 9.0.1 with THAT BUILD NUMBER you can use it ... if you are on a different build DO NOT use it, I take no responsabilities !!!
link to magisk recovery_ramdisk PATCHED magisk recovery_ramdisk PATCHED magisk_patched_9_0_1_175.img
3. Start your smartphone in fastboot mode pressing [Vol-]+[Power] and connect it to your PC. ( you can NOT enter fastboot? read in next section)
4. Open a Powershell and check if your honor 8 pro is listed by writing :
Code:
fastboot devices
you should see something like BYJDU17803000088 fastboot
that means your phone in correctly in fastboot/connected
5. Flash the Recovery_Ramdisk:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk magisk_patched.img
(in this case MY ALREADY MADE magisk recovery_ramdisk patched is named like that IF you choose a different name that CHANGE it also in the command)
when the process is complete (you'll get something like this
OKAY [ 0.184s]
finished. total time: 0.879s)
you need to REBOOT follow these next steps as i describe them or it won't work :
6. from your pc command window write
Code:
fastboot reboot
as soon as phone reboot
- remove usb cable
- PRESS and HOLD DOWN " volume up " VOL+ , keep it pressed until you see HONOR text (blue screen)
doing this will INSTALL MAGISK
7. your phone boot regularly(hopefully) now open Magisk Manager
you will see MAGISK 19.x.x.
and MAGISK 7.3.2
click on INSTALL (magisk 19.3) --- INSTALL ---- DIRECT INSTALL
when it's done it'll ask you to reboot , click reboot
phone is rooted !!!!!
i hope it helps for any references have a look at these pages which helped me :
root emui 9
magisk download
Magisk info
ROOT EMUI 9.1.0.210
first of all thank you to @OldDroid and @Athanatos81 for support ...
DOWNLOAD my patched magisk: PATCHED Magisk recovery 9.1.0.210
I'll descrive here the process how to update and root from 9.0.1.175 to 9.1.0.210
in my case i was on emui 9.0.1.175 rooted and i couldn't enter recovery or fastboot or simply update through system update !
so before starting it go in system settings -> update and DOWNLOAD your update
when you end your download don't restart and update BUT enter in fastboot:
to enter fastboot i had to restart honor 8 pro (while connected to usb)
and keep pressing VOL DOWN
now in fastboot you'll do following steps
(to install official update YOU FIRST NEED to install stock recovery so in this case 9.0.1.175 stock recovery .. while if you just need root on your actual rom you can just use the patched magisk recovery)
check if your smartphone is seen
fastboot devices
now
fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk magisk_patched_9_1_0_210.img ( in this case is the one i already patched for you )
fastboot reboot
let system start and than use ADB
adb reboot recovery
system will restart now open magisk manager
INSTALL MAGISK( in my case v20.1 )
INSTALL direct
reboot when asked
congratulations your Emui 9.1 is rooted !!!

I've got that "system update settings" on my honor 8 Pro and guess what? I've lost magisk root... so I need to do procedure again.. unbelievable but that is it! I found out cause I started to see annoying advertising and I checked adaway and "no root"

It still works on my EMUI 9.1.0.210 C636.
Follow the instruction on the second half of the original post, and then download these files from the link by nanortemis.
1. Put the device into fastboot mode by connecting the USB cable to the PC and long press "Vol -" button
2. Install adb, and run
fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk magisk_patched_9_1_0_210.img
fasboot reboot
3. boot into the device, and then open the magisk app, you shall see a pop-up asking for reboot again, click on ok.
4. reboot... and yeap... you're rooted.
