[FIXED - May 2018] Multi-touch issues in Android 8.1.0 - Google Pixel 2 Guides, News, & Discussion

Issue has been fixed in builds:
Android 8.1.0 (OPM2.171019.029.B1, May 2018)
Android P Developer Preview 2 (PPP2.180412.013, May 2018)
Last builds affected:
Android 8.1.0 (OPM2.171019.029, Apr 2018)
Android P Developer Preview 1 (PPP1.180208.014, March 2018)
When two or more fingers are placed on the screen for an extended period of time the touch input from the second finger will become erratic at times, jumping to different parts of the display while you are moving it. I play first person shooter games commonly and this issues is extremely annoying when trying to aim.
If anyone has time to test I highly encourage you to let Google know of the problem by going to:
Settings > System > About Phone > Send feedback about this device
Also you can star the issue I already created in the Android issue tracker. Links are below for anybody able to test. Thanks for reading.

Multi-touch tester app used:

Reverting to 8.0.0 will "fix" the issue, the issue is NOT present in 8.0.0.

Issue still exists in the public 8.1.0 release OPM1.171019.011.

Use issue # 70344455 from post #2. The one from DP has been deferred.
I put up a new video today demonstrating using one of Google's own apps vs a game.
https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/70344455#comment72

Has anybody tested to see if the issue is present using any of the custom kernels on XDA? I am just trying to determine where the problem originated.

yes, i am using this one:
https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/70344455

I have also sent feedback via settings and posted in the issue tracker. I would love to know of there are Pixel 2 XL owners that do not have this issue. If that is the case I will be submitting an RMA. Tomorrow I will be contacting support and asking for a definitive answer as to when and if we can expect a fix. This is the single most frustrating issue I have with the device. I love everything else about this phone but this is driving me nuts

I watched the videos attached and to my surprise and unfortunate relief I noticed you are having this issue with SGL. That and Afterpulse are unbearable to play.

Just remove your case

Happens to me all the time while zooming in on photos!

Any luck contacting support? I don't think RMA will help, as it is a software issue. SGL is frustrating as hell, I end up not completing any missions I start.

Well my apologies I thought you were trying to be a wise guy. Again this was one of the first possible solutions I thought of as I've had that work with previous devices. Sometimes the grounding when making contact with the actual device without a case does work. However, I've tried all possible fixes and none have worked.

Thanks. Well, I tried it, no luck. It is most definitely software. Downgrading to 8.0.0 fixed it for me. I'm back on 8.1.0 now though, I shouldn't have to run older software and an outdated security patch just to "fix" a problem that Google should fix properly. Part of the appeal of the Pixel is being up to date.

I read somewhere that the Feb update is supposed to address some of the touch and swipe issues. Try again then.

Where did you read that? Google has been pretty silent on the issue.

Is is any better for Feb OTA update?

Freezing and Locking up on Nexus 7 2012 and 2013

I have one 2012 nexus 7 and a 2013 2nd gen Nexus 7.
They both experience the same problem. They both randomly freeze or lock up when going to a different screen. For example if I click a browser link in my gmail app, it will freeze. The only way I have found to fix this is to press the recent apps button twice and then it will un freeze and go to the browser.
It will do this on any application or setting. It does not do this all the time. It does this about 70% of the time, and other times the tablet switches screens without a problem.
Here is a video that I took that shows the problem. I used the setting screen as an example.
I have searched and found no answers to this problem. I have even tried different roms to no luck.
This is an example on the nexus 7 2012
http://youtu.be/uHFezkqzjAw
Just clean flash the stock android version you like and start fresh.
Tho one point....if they both have a similar issue...it could very well be a bad app both devices have installed.

No answer beats this one hands down! Must have been different at some point with that Thanks Meter count. So, what's the question to google, "which same bad app is found on both my Nexus 7's?"

Its called troubleshooting. Maybe a process of elimination. A simple way....find common apps....uninstall them all from both devices, see if it helps? There are literally 1000's of "bad apps". Sorry, I don't have a list of them all.
Where's your advice my friend? Or did you just jump in to be disrespectful?
---------- Post added at 10:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:16 PM ----------
Oh, and if you knew anything at all about android.....flashing a clean stock factory image is the absolute best way to determine if something is software or hardware related. Its probably the most suggested remedy on XDA for any device....when a tough to solve issue arises.
But, you're new.... you'll get it eventually.

Android 5.1 dropping right now*

it can take up to 3 weeks to get an update once google starts. within 3 weeks is what google promises.
Newest nexus device = last device to get the update it needs and has needed since it's botched release. Gj googs
Guess it's time to turn back on the webpage update add on for the factory image pages. I mostly just want to try a new modem.

Yeah I really don't have to many issues either I was just being snide. I do think it burns too much battery while sitting idle with screen off though. I shouldn't be losing 5 to 10 percent battery overnight. Mind you my overnights are 6 to 7 hours usually.

Everyone calm down, it's not in aosp yet
and all i want is just a stock deodex rom =/
so what is new besides the HD voice and device protection ?

Finally, someone with common sense (and you beat me to it).
ROM's won't appear until it's in AOSP and Dev's re-compile.
for those devices it goes out to, we might see the OTA available if someone captures and upload it to their favorite BB
And then this could lend credence to VZ's hitting stores with 5.1 a week from Thursday (But I still think those would be a 5.0 variant with a open and update to 5.1 myself ...)

shamu takes more time for some reason, its usually later than the rest
It is being pushed to aosp now: https://android.googlesource.com/device/moto/shamu/+/lollipop-mr1-release

The system images are live for the nexus 4&5. But not the nexus 6 as per usual.
Why is the 6 slower to update? Is it done chronologically?

Fingerprint sensor stops working randomly

So this just started happening very recently. It won't recognize that I'm touching the fingerprint scanner if my phone's screen has been off for X amount of time. No vibration, nothing to indicate that it realizes I'm touching it. Even when I turn on the screen to look at the lockscreen, it still won't detect my finger. After I unlock using my pattern, then lock again, it'll detect my finger when trying to unlock again. But if I let it sit for a bit with the screen off, it'll stop working again - almost as if it forgets to keep the fingerprint sensor on when it enters doze mode.
I thought it might be an issue with MHC19I, but I've had that update for almost a week now, and I hadn't seen this issue happen until today. And I don't see anyone else complaining about it recently.
It could also be due to a recent app upgrade, maybe? The list of apps that upgraded before I first noticed this issue are:
Chrome Beta, letgo, Robinhood (uses fingerprint sensor), TurboTax
Has anyone else experienced this? Any idea on how to troubleshoot this? The Google rep wanted me to boot into safe mode, but I'm hesitant to do that due to this bug - it's happened to me before on this phone - or to do a factory reset, which is ridiculous.
I am experiencing the same thing. Exactly. On march build
Same thing here. Started yesterday as well. I also had Robinhood update yesterday. In looking at the app reviews, it is breaking the nexus imprint for the 6P & 5X. Just deleted the app and rebooted the phone. Will update if this fixes it.
Misery loves company, I guess. Glad I'm not alone. I disabled all my xposed modules and the issue still persists. Maybe it's due to a recent update for an app.
Do either of you guys have any of these apps installed? Let's see if we can narrow it down.
Edit: Yeah, it's probably Robinhood.
Deleting the Robinhood app and rebooting seems to have fixed my issues!!

I do have Robinhood installed. Didn't expect an app can cause this to happen.

Add me to the list. Just removed robinhood (before finding this thread) and haven't had the problem since. Thanks OP for the perfect description of said problem, as those were my exact symptoms as well. Problem started on the evening of the 17th... been pulling my hair out ever since. Even reinstalled the latest factory images (without wiping). I was so worried it was a hardware issue... glad it's not!
Hi All,
I'm an Android developer for Robinhood. Very sorry for the issue! We'd noticed it ourselves, but it took a while for us to realize that our own app was the cause. We have a fix ready to go out to the beta users on Monday. If you guys are interested in joining the beta, you can do so here: play.google.com/apps/testing/com.robinhood.android

Hi there. Thanks for your reply. I don't use the beta version and I'm not interested in doing so for an app that handles my money. Please push the update to the stable build ASAP. Also, it'd be nice if you included the last-update-time to the widget. And re-adding the refresh button to the widget would be nice too. Thanks again!

Hope this fixes the switching keyboard issue as well. That was the only issue I had. Everything else works great for me.
UPDATE: Nope, switching keyboard issue still exists.

I got this update yesterday, and now Im having new issues.. The lockscreen doesn't actually lock half the time, even when manually pressing the lock button. I'll hit 'home' to wake the phone and find myself right on my homescreen instead of the lock screen. I also keep getting a popup that says 'network connection failed', but everything seems to be working normally... Anybody else having issues from this new update?
My wife and I got this update to Nougat on Saturday (03/25). Went from Android 6.something to Android 7.0.
Overall, it seems a little snappier, but I think I had the lockscreen issue this morning that Smoghog mentioned. Pulled it off my belt and when I looked at the screen it was open and dialing my wife.
I'm also not sure I like that the pulldown notifications are in smaller type. My wife's a little upset she can't customize the balloon colors in Messages (unless we're missing something).
Only other thing is why is the security update from February if they're pushing this at the end of March?
Ever since i got this update last night, it won't let me change my wallpaper. It says "Application Not Installled". Anyone else have this issue?

Yes, I use a lockscreen - fingerprint/pin. It's only done it the one time so far.
We have noticed that we randomly lose stuff from the recent apps list. Not even always the oldest on the list.

Gboard has a number row. You have to go turn the setting on to always show it. If you can't find it, this PCWorld article will tell you how to turn it on:

not yet. Android auto has been very buggy for me. Random disconnect, several times i have to reboot the phone to get it to recognize the phone. Lately I noticed on the maps if I just keep it up while driving it starts looking weird and distorted so I have to back out of it then back in.
Android Auto has been a mess for a year. When I first used it back in early 2017 on 7.1.1. it was working perfect. Then a few issues with 7.1.2. Now 8.0 and 8.1 its not reliable.

Back in early 2017 on 7.1.1. I found it to work quite well, not so much anymore.

Did you see me in the oneplus forums? If that is the case, I exchanged my 5t for a pixel 2 because it was to large for me

i did not. It's listed on your signature. That was the only phone I considered other than Pixel 2 however I have CDMA so I cannot use One Plus, but that was the only other Android phone I'd consider if I bought one.
It's probably good I never bought one as they were hacked:

The Pixel isn't perfect, but to me it's better than everything else out there.
Looks like it is out now.

That´s right. Version OPM1.171019.019
New baseband?
The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL include Pixel Visual Core, Google's first custom imaging chip that allows for HDR+ quality pictures in third-party apps like Instagram and Snapchat. But Pixel 2 users haven't been able to take advantage of those capabilities because the co-processor hasn't been enabled. Well, they'll be able to soon because Google announced today that it's turning on Pixel Visual Core, bringing the HDR+ technology that's been available through the Pixel 2's main camera app to other photography, social media or camera apps.
Pixel Visual Core uses computational photography and machine learning to boost image quality in third-party apps that allow users to take photos. Now that it's enabled, Pixel 2 users can just take a pic in another app, and Pixel Visual Core will automatically make it brighter, more detailed and clearer. You can check out a before and after above.
Google says the update that will switch on Pixel Visual Core is rolling out over the next few days along with other software improvements. Additionally, new winter sports-themed AR stickers should be available later this week.

Same here.
Same here on Pixel 1
Edit: TWRP 3.2.1-0 boots fine with new February patch after removing screen lock.

These same issues were being reported in the 2XL forum as well.
