Freezing and Locking up on Nexus 7 2012 and 2013 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have one 2012 nexus 7 and a 2013 2nd gen Nexus 7.
They both experience the same problem. They both randomly freeze or lock up when going to a different screen. For example if I click a browser link in my gmail app, it will freeze. The only way I have found to fix this is to press the recent apps button twice and then it will un freeze and go to the browser.
It will do this on any application or setting. It does not do this all the time. It does this about 70% of the time, and other times the tablet switches screens without a problem.
Here is a video that I took that shows the problem. I used the setting screen as an example.
I have searched and found no answers to this problem. I have even tried different roms to no luck.
This is an example on the nexus 7 2012

Just clean flash the stock android version you like and start fresh.
Tho one point....if they both have a similar issue...it could very well be a bad app both devices have installed.

No answer beats this one hands down! Must have been different at some point with that Thanks Meter count. So, what's the question to google, "which same bad app is found on both my Nexus 7's?"

Its called troubleshooting. Maybe a process of elimination. A simple way....find common apps....uninstall them all from both devices, see if it helps? There are literally 1000's of "bad apps". Sorry, I don't have a list of them all.
Where's your advice my friend? Or did you just jump in to be disrespectful?
---------- Post added at 10:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:16 PM ----------
Oh, and if you knew anything at all about android.....flashing a clean stock factory image is the absolute best way to determine if something is software or hardware related. Its probably the most suggested remedy on XDA for any device....when a tough to solve issue arises.
But, you're new.... you'll get it eventually.

4.2. Is a flop as far as I'm concerned..
Download factory image here https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Then use this guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796
Be mindful to make sure filenames are correct .(this is an older guide.)
If you want to save your data, back it up onto computer(this erases everything)

I have to agree this update should not have been released, I'm stock on the nexus 7 and its so buggy! It keeps stuttering, taken ages to load webpages , all that project butter has gone, not happy, funny enough it's perfect on my galaxy nexus which is running 4.2 stock rooted, BTW I got the update ota
---------- Post added at 05:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:24 PM ----------
To add to this, I've just tried to set up a second user and the setup crashed once , gave me a blank screen for 10 seconds every time I pressed next, then the launcher crashed twice , gave me a blank screen for over a minute, stuttering when swiping side to side, even now as I type this its not registering a click then I click again and I get two letters ..... And pinch zoom is jerky! Wtf happened?!?! Hope there's a fix on the way, this is the one device I'm reluctant to root and install custom ROM simply because 4.1 was perfect
Guys just download nexus 7 toolkit and flash 4.1 image... Sorry, but even me (girl) was able to do this succesfully.
Lmfao ok ok you guys win haha but i am stock and it was official update. Im good on pcs but this is my first tablet, android is new to me anyway im on pain pills for broken leg from a motorcycle accident so my head is definitely not all there lately but ya lets hear the jokes about that now. Thanks for your reasoned response. I'm sure people will try to help you if you keep the tone more conciliatory. Could you be more specific about what has ruined your experience with the update? I honestly don't see that much different, other than having to wait a few days for devs to update borked apps. Stickmount is my biggest concern, and some of the video players. They'll get updated though. Hang in there and if you decide to go back, the Nexus Root Kit threads and WUGS toolkit thread at Android Forums can get you there if you carefully read the detailed instructions.

The dev for stickymount says it may not be solvable, Multi-user by default is a nightmare.
I will learn from this not to jump the gun, but mostly I read that the update was good. Youtube app crashes within a min, firefox, boat browser crash, amazon app store wont save my login now, there's more but cant think of at the moment. Oh Gmail app crashes, Google currents crashes and I haven't tried half of my other apps yet but I've seen enough to know this is complete crap. Im just mad that i have to illegally root and use someone's homemade software to restore my tablet, not sure it is illegal to root, nor would I care but it's the point.

Yeah i noticed after updating that some of my apps that reinstalled after the update would crash when i tried opening them for the 1st time. i unistalled then reinstalled them and they worked fine after that. i too am not really liking the update hopefully i can find a way to revert back to 4.1.2 easily or theres some work arounds (especially for stick mount as mentioned earlier)
All this talk about apps not working is not on the new OS....well it kinda is but not really.
android releases the OS and DEVS have to update their apps to work with the new OS. they do this with the android SDK (i think) IMO, google SHOULD release the SDK for the new OS about a month out. giving Devs the option to update their apps before the OS hits getting rid of all "these" types of posts.
also, FWIW, i did a clean install of 4.2 and i haven't had a singe app crash on me except MX player (which was updated yesterday for 4.2) other than that, everything is smooth, fast, working wonderfully. i know its not what you want to hear, but maybe a clean wipe of the device would be best. Google wont put out a crappy update....but sometimes, for some reasons unknown, it doesn't take well to and update with all the user apps and their data. at the very lease, clear cache and see how it works.

Completely agree. They new update 4.2 corrected a lot of bugs. The power management is a lot better and the memory management too. Ive run some test and saw that the system load is quite inferior to what it was before due to a more clean management process

First I wanna ask anyone who says the 4.2 update is terrible if they even tried a full data wipe/factory reset? If not, try that before accusing Google of releasing buggy firmware. It could be your stinkin data/apps fault

Most to all the people were decent. Plenty of people pointed you in the right direction, or linked to a guide. You gotta do a little researching and educate yourself a little so you understand the whole process.

Nope, it's not illegal to root.. it will supposedly be illegal to unlock a phone (for another network) without the network's consent though.
Just think..there's no reason at all running custom firmware/roms/rooting can be illegal on a nexus device, why do you think the bootloader is effortlessly unlockable?
And if you think about it, no, it's not really crazy that is a "hassle" to revert to old firmware, because
A) most devices (Apple comes to mind) you can't do this, unless certain conditions apply (if you backed up SHSH blobs, etc etc)
B) if you understood the process of flashing the stock rom, and if you had ADB/fastboot setup correctly, it's simple as pie to flash the old firmware. And the "homemade software" is just an interface for n00bs (like yourself) and would not exist if it didn't use adb and fastboot behind the hood. And if you think it was hard to do what you did, you should try to do it on a device with a locked bootloader: (droid x2 comes to mind) it's a nightmare
So basically, Google has this wonderful OS and provides devs and users alike these wonderful tools (and Nexus hardware to match) at our disposable.
Idk about you, but I say kudos Google!

Yeah I really don't have to many issues either I was just being snide. I do think it burns too much battery while sitting idle with screen off though. I shouldn't be losing 5 to 10 percent battery overnight. Mind you my overnights are 6 to 7 hours usually.

Finally, someone with common sense (and you beat me to it).
ROM's won't appear until it's in AOSP and Dev's re-compile.
for those devices it goes out to, we might see the OTA available if someone captures and upload it to their favorite BB
And then this could lend credence to VZ's hitting stores with 5.1 a week from Thursday (But I still think those would be a 5.0 variant with a open and update to 5.1 myself ...)

EBay app very slow

Anyone having issues with the ebay app?Works great on my oneplus3,nexus 6p and my wife's nexus 6..Its super slow on the lg v20.
I noticed it on mine too! What a pain. I guess it's a nougat issue? Not a problem on my v10... I'll check it later just in case but I wasn't having problems before.

Same issue here on Nexus 5 with pure Nexus marshmallow. I m an intensive user of the ebay app... I found that after sometimes, eBay app tend to slow down and It s heavy for the system. When my phone start to lag (nexus 5 on M pure nexus is a butter experience) if I open recent apps , ebay is always in the list. If I close ebay phone go back to the butter experience. Due to this fact, and to others like the missing search option to search an item in the whole europe like in the mobile site , I decided to remove ebay app like I done for Facebook and Facebook messenger... Those 3 apps will never be reinstalled on my phone. It takes me an year to find what was slowing down my phone between the 200 apps installed

Pixel XL 2 Owners beware..

So today I found out that the latest version of Swipe for Facebook (I think, pretty sure) created major problems. Pixel launcher would constantly crash, phone became semi useless cause of that. Then a couple reboots later, screen would go black after unlocking pass code. So I had to factory reset it. I reinstalled swipe and bam Pixel launcher crashed. So I used Google assistant to open Google play store and Uninstalled the app. So far no issue. My phone is a Google version and unlocked bootloader.

It is that simple. Plus it smells more like a problem that the developer of the app needs to resolve, rather then being beware for the "pixel".
So report it to the developer instead of just ranting here, I think that might be a lot more productive. Or don't use it. Either way, not a "Pixel" issue....

I'm not saying it wasn't a problem with the app. What I am saying is that it is not a run of the mill app crashing, where you just uninstall and everything is good. Having someone or now two people mention it took a factory reset to fix things after installing the app is useful. Then people can decide to take a chance or wait.

He probably lucked out and got the 7.2.1 update instead of 7.2. From people's response here as well as reviews on the Play Store, this **** was no joke.
This was horrible for me. For some reason even though my phone was setup 48 hours prior cloud backup did not back up my texts. So because of **** testing on a Play Store app I lost all my messages. I'd like to know exactly what the **** did the developer do to cause this. I've never seen a Play Store app this damaging before. I've honestly never had anything like this happen on a stock device. So true. It's amazing to me that with all of Facebook's resources and with how much they rely on mobile users, that their mobile app is still so f***ing terrible. I was having some lag/stuttering issues on my LG V30 and after uninstalling facebook and LG's built in facebook installer app, my phone started running buttery smooth and hasn't hiccuped since. Now I just check facebook occasionally when I'm in front of my computer.
Uninstalling it from your phone immediately shows you how little you need that crap feed in your life.
Facebook is and always will be coded like garbage.

Android 8.1.0 (OPM2.171019.029.B1, May 2018)
Android P Developer Preview 2 (PPP2.180412.013, May 2018)
Last builds affected:
Android 8.1.0 (OPM2.171019.029, Apr 2018)
Android P Developer Preview 1 (PPP1.180208.014, March 2018)
When two or more fingers are placed on the screen for an extended period of time the touch input from the second finger will become erratic at times, jumping to different parts of the display while you are moving it. I play first person shooter games commonly and this issues is extremely annoying when trying to aim.
If anyone has time to test I highly encourage you to let Google know of the problem by going to:
Settings > System > About Phone > Send feedback about this device
Also you can star the issue I already created in the Android issue tracker. Links are below for anybody able to test. Thanks for reading.

Reverting to 8.0.0 will "fix" the issue, the issue is NOT present in 8.0.0.
Issue still exists in the public 8.1.0 release OPM1.171019.011.

Use issue # 70344455 from post #2. The one from DP has been deferred.
I put up a new video today demonstrating using one of Google's own apps vs a game.

Has anybody tested to see if the issue is present using any of the custom kernels on XDA? I am just trying to determine where the problem originated.
yes, i am using this one:

I have also sent feedback via settings and posted in the issue tracker. I would love to know of there are Pixel 2 XL owners that do not have this issue. If that is the case I will be submitting an RMA. Tomorrow I will be contacting support and asking for a definitive answer as to when and if we can expect a fix. This is the single most frustrating issue I have with the device. I love everything else about this phone but this is driving me nuts

I watched the videos attached and to my surprise and unfortunate relief I noticed you are having this issue with SGL. That and Afterpulse are unbearable to play.
Just remove your case
Happens to me all the time while zooming in on photos!

Any luck contacting support? I don't think RMA will help, as it is a software issue. SGL is frustrating as hell, I end up not completing any missions I start.

Are you using case? Try to reproduce your problem without it.

Do you have a link? It doesn't sound like the same kind of problem to me, but I am curious.

Well my apologies I thought you were trying to be a wise guy. Again this was one of the first possible solutions I thought of as I've had that work with previous devices. Sometimes the grounding when making contact with the actual device without a case does work. However, I've tried all possible fixes and none have worked.

Sure, but be ready for translating russian. http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=847032&view=findpost&p=69149836
Before this post some discussion and attempts of other people to reproduce that.

Thanks. Well, I tried it, no luck. It is most definitely software. Downgrading to 8.0.0 fixed it for me. I'm back on 8.1.0 now though, I shouldn't have to run older software and an outdated security patch just to "fix" a problem that Google should fix properly. Part of the appeal of the Pixel is being up to date.
I read somewhere that the Feb update is supposed to address some of the touch and swipe issues. Try again then.

Where did you read that? Google has been pretty silent on the issue.
Is is any better for Feb OTA update?
