16Gb vs. 32Gb

Hello,
I assume that all the upcoming SGS2 in the market are the 16Gb based model.
Any news when the 32Gb will be out? any estimates on pricing?
Also - I understand that in Android, like linux/unix - more base memory = better overall performance (swap, etc.). Is that really the case?

32gb is just based on the storage and u will get the same amount (around 2gb) to install apps. the rest is storage. u will not gain any performance as its like swapping a 16gb micro sd for a 32gb micro sd "all u gain is storage"

32 GB vs 16 GB

what are you guys getting? I ve pre-ordered for the 16gb but thinking to maybe switch to 32gb, for I ve heard 32gb is noticeably faster cuz of bigger storage Idk if that is true... This is my first time using android tablet, ditching ipad finally. I know there is an extended sd card option but still would you buy 32 gb for $50 more?

32gb... Some of these games coming out are over 1gb each, and some are approaching 2gb. I like to have things installed and not have to do the install/uninstall shuffle. Plus to have space for other things. All Media and storage go on the 64gb micro sd card though.

I pre-ordered a 16GB black from Best Buy, then changed my mind to a 32 GB white.
Best to have too much than too little.

They kind of want you to buy the 32gb version since the 16gb version is only 50 bucks less. That being said, I think it matters less on a tablet than on a phone because I always root my tablets. There's less downside from voiding warranty because my tablet is always safe and secure in it's case inside my bag while I'm on the run whereas my phone can be accidentally dropped at any time. That's just me though.
The faster speed from having a larger internal sd card is of somewhat miniscule benefit. For something like a 128gb and 256gb ssd, the improvement will be mildly noticeable but not so much on a tiny sd card. Get the one that fits your needs.
I really want a black one because I prefer understatement (don't want to get robbed too). So if I get a 32gb version, it will be because the 16gb version is only available in white in the states right now.

I got the black 32GB from Best Buy always nice to have extra, also have a 64GB sd card for it.

I was on the fence about getting which one to get too. I decided to get the 16gb because of the Amazon $50 gift card promotion. I don't game alot, so the huge app sizes are not as much as an issue for me. I will put in a 64gb sd card for videos and pictures.

i never game as much as i think i'm going to and always have tons of space left over, lol. i bought just about every emulator and a bunch of games, most of which i've never played or never installed.
i did preorder the 32GB for two reasons - 1: if i want black and by the 11th there's only one choice
2: i swear i'm gonna start playing those games i bought, lol
i also bought another 64GB sd for media. i got a 64 in my ativ 500t and 700t but only a 32 in my gn8. the only reason my phones have 32gb is b/c tw roms are crazy huge compared to AOSP and nandroids are taking 4GB a piece! otherwise 16GB would have been enough.

I feel you about the size of the tw roms. Hopefully, there will be root and a streamlined tw rom to help out a bit with that.

For SSDs why is there any benefit to speed based on size at all? I assumed the OP was just confusing RAM with storage.
For magnetic HDDs, bigger is faster for the same amount of data because on a bigger drive more of that data can be stored towards the edge. The edge of the platter moves quicker, so you get faster R/W times.
Why would different size SSDs have different speeds?

You get faster speeds on larger SSD drives because of the way the controller works. There are more cells working in parallel which increases speed. Each individual bit of information acts rather slowly in emmc and is pretty consistent across devices as long as the type of Nand is the same. It's the controller which makes the difference in speed and the controller is better when it has more parallel units working in tandem. So in the SSD world, bigger is better.

suggestions required on choosing 16gb or 32 gb variant

please help me in choosing 16gb or 32 gb variant of moto g4 plus.
I liked the specs of moto g4 plus and have been looking to buy it since a very long time. and equally so scared of reading negative reviews.
Iam a very moderate mobile user , my requirements :
1. occassional calling - less than 1 hr on call / day
2.browsing
3.less than 1hr on social media / day
4. occasional usage of camera,music,videos
5. never touch any games apps
Now iam confused between choosing 16gb/2gb vs 32gb/3gb because of 2 reasons
1. there is difference of 3000 INR between these variants in india currently,
2. the negative reviews
- why should i spend 3000 more bucks on a mobile which "MIGHT " creats issues in future ? so i want to go for a lower version of this same mobile for lesser price?
please clarify these doubts :
- for my above mentioned requirements, is 2gb ram really sufficient ?
- iam having Strontium Nitro 32GB 70MB/s UHS-1 Class 10 microsdhc Memory card, i want to use this SD card as permanant internal storage. does it support as internal storage memory ? and is it advisable to do so ? will there be any lags ?
-Of the 16 gb internal memory, i guess only 9 gb is available, If i update g4plus OS to nougat and in future to android O , how much internal space would left to me in 16gb. ? can i compensate this space issue with SD card ?

2GB RAM is sufficient ONLY if you'd be carrying out these activities one at a time. Running social media app such as FB for an hour, whilst also browsing and/or listening to music, streaming media, is VERY likely to cause noticeable lag.

By permanent internal storage you most likely meant adoptable storage, which IS SUPPORTED by both 16gb and 32gb variants. IME you can never truly replace the efficiency of the inbuilt storage, specially for operations that would require constant yet quick I/O ops. Even while using your ext sdcard as adoptable storage its best practice to prioritize large external app data for the secondary storage - example offline YouTube content or camera RAW files.
Plus, external SD cards are not designed to endure rigorous read write operations and have a much smaller write cycle life. Besides, you may want to keep i mind that ext cards, are more prone to data corruption, and also if the card is ejected /damaged by mistake it'd crash the system given its functioning as internal storage.
As for the lags, not very noticeable in terms of animations, transitions or UI latency, but definitely in app launches, high load operations such as graphic rich games or image editing and saving edited files.

9 GB initial space in internal memory is rather low by today's standards. Even if you have set ext card as adoptable storage, several apps which have been designed for pre MM APIs vigorously cache data to internal drive by default, and unless you heavily tweak app data storage parameters you are likely to find much of 9gb taken up in no time.
So to specifically answer your question, yes you can compense for the low storage with am ext card but you'd be runnining a fairly tight ship, while also having to constantly keep check on storage performance.

AFAIK storage & RAM are the only differences between the two variants. You should though do an accurate and detailed comparison on a site such as phonearena to be sure.
Bottomline: if the difference in price isn't unaffordable, you'd have much happier 3 years of use with the 32gb one.

One thing I noted was that you're planning to use a UHS-1 memory card as adoptable storage. If so, I'd suggest upgrading to a UHS-3 memory card if you can (this doesn't just apply to our device, it's more general advice for adoptable storage). It's more expensive, but the write speeds of UHS-3 cards are rated at 30 MB/s minimum, whereas for UHS-1 I recall the minimum write speed is 10 MB/s - 10 MB/s may be too slow for operations (and your device may notify you of that). UHS-3 cards seem to work better for adoptable storage (though as frances91 points out, they will not keep up with the internal flash memory). Also, adoptable storage may mean that some apps get installed to your SD card rather than internal storage, which means that certain app functions (e.g. widgets) will not function until you move them to your internal storage. In addition to what frances91 has noted about data corruption (rare, but can happen), your adopted SD card is encrypted by your device, and so may not function if you eject/flash another system on your device until you erase the SD card. You therefore may wish to keep the SD card as portable storage, so apps are defaulting to internal storage for installation, and keeping your music/photos on your SD card. As portable storage, you can then eject the SD card as you wish.
I agree with frances91 though - if you see yourself using the device for 3+ years, I suggest spending the extra money now and buying the 3 GB/32 GB version to future proof yourself. Just ensure, if you see yourself flashing custom ROMs in the future, that the device you buy is not an Amazon Prime Exclusive (I didn't see one on Amazon India, just something to watch for).

6gb ram 64gb vs 8gb 128gb

Hey guys,
I've come to the conclusion that my nexus 6p is no longer a satisfying phone so I've decided to upgrade to the oneplus 5. My question is, is there a significant difference between the 6gb and the 8gb versions, I'm fine with 64gb of storage so that's not the issue.
I'm asking because the difference in price is pretty big with the 8gb version costs almost as much as the s8.

I'm a heavy user (150 apps, 30 services running at all time) and I've never seen memory usage go over 4.5 GB.
The rest of the RAM is not idle though, is used to cache the flash memory (data, etc).

In the UK there is a £50 difference between the 2 models. To me, for 2gb of extra ram and double the storage, it is most definitely worth it! Unless you really want a gold one, in which case they only come in the cheaper option.
If it were me, I'd go for the better spec model.

In the US the difference is of $50 USD between OP5 versions, being the OP5 128gb version $530 USD, while the Samsung Galaxy S8 is $650 USD.
I bought the 128gb version thinking in not changing my phone in the next 4 years (who knows what kind of memory-consuming apps we will have in the future). To be honest, I am not even close to using 64gb of my 128gb OP5 internal memory, but 2 extra gb of RAM and double capacity seem like a good deal for the price difference.

Where I'm from the difference is over 100$, where 8gb version is about 665$, for comparison the s8+ is 780$.

I'm a heavy user, and my RAM usually caps around 4.9GB used. That's about 82% capacity if I had only 6GB. I don't like being that close to full. Who knows what types of demands Android 8 and 9 will put on the phone in the future.
But today, 6GB is the "appropriate" amount for a flagship. 4GB is not enough.

They have a promotion going on right now where you by the 128GB and get a free pair of headphones, and if you have the student discount you can get the 128GB + Bullets V2 for $485 shipped.

I like having a lot of storage and 64GB definitely wouldn't cut it but the 8GB of ram is a marketing gimmick. No smartphone needs that much ram. People who are talking about the large amount of ram their phone is using don't understand how ram actually works. Android manages ram automatically like a computer does--if you have a lot of ram Android is going to try and use it and will keep more stuff in memory --but that's not the same as actually needing all that ram. There have been tests on the performance difference between the 6GB and 8GB models and they found that any difference between the two was negligible at best.

I do agree with the comment above me, that's just a marketing. If you don't need the storage rom, and don't want to take a phone because a colour you preferred, just save money.
I have bought the higher version for the same reason as comment here, for better spec, colour, and not too much money for me. BUT, anyway I bought a case for slippery issue that is cover the colour so.. here is the answer
if you need money or you consider 50 for something, go for cheaper version
if 50 bugs is nothing more than something go for .. you can boast with you RAM and your colour in front of your friends.... and here

Micro SD as internal adoptable storage?

I bought a 128 GB Samsung EVO microSDXC Memory Card U3, Grade 3, Class 10, from Amazon and was wondering if it is a good idea to use it as internal adoptable storage. Will it affect performance so bad? I just have one week with my Mi A1 and it is working great, 64 GB is plenty for what I need for now, but I guess it will be great not to worry about data space for apps, movies or photos. So, what do you think?

I have the 32gb A1 and use a Samsun 64gb SD as internal storage for a total of 96gb (around 90 usable) and it works a treat. I have around 30gb of apps already so the SD is being used a little and I couldn't tell which apps use it at all. They all feel equally quick.
No issues to report, highly recommend
