So I'm wondering if there is a micro SD card slot then do you really need to buy the 32gb version? It appears that the current math among tablet manufacturer's is $100 for 16gb of memory which is obviously a joke. So if i buy the 16gb version and then buy a 16gb sd card ($25) do I effectively come out with the same thing for $75 cheaper?
Depends how you use it. I think it will behave like the Samsung Galaxy S in that the built in memory will appear as a different location to the external memory. Files cannot span both locations and thus your file may not fit even though the total combined free space you have left is larger than the file you are trying to copy.
well if thats the case then in general it will work just fine. Chances arent very good that i'm going to have some massive file on there.
Internal memory is probably faster than 25$ microSD card.
You could spend $90 on a Class 10 32GB card and be looking pretty good.

On my galaxy s, my class 4 micro sd card is as quick is the internal memory. I'm sure the tab will allow quicker speeds but it's worth noting that a class 4 card is sufficiently fast enough to play back 1080p without problems. If you want to save time transferring files between tablet and pc then fair enough but I would personally save money and get a class 4 and make a cup of tea while it copies

I think the conflicting reports are due to two different versions of the Tab 10.1. The version shown during the MWC does not appear to have a MicroSD card slot. The newer version shown at CTIA does have a MicroSD card slot. Most reviews are consistent with this but a few have gotten it wrong which has probably led to the confusion.
There's a number of differences between the versions but the easy to identify differences are thickness and MP of the rear camera. The first version (MWC) is 10.9mm thick and has an 8MP rear camera. The newer version (CTIA) is 8.6mm thick and has a 3MP rear camera.

Yeah i figure thats about what happened. Hopefully we will see some detailed(confirmed) specs soon so we can know what is really driving this thing. Also, perhaps finally review the optional UI question.

true, you probably can live without an SD card. But the reason most people will probably get a 16gb plus a 32gb SD is because its cheaper (even with the extra 32gb SD card purchase) then paying an extra $100 for a mere 16GB
I actually have a 16gb class 4 sitting around collecting dust. I'll just stick it in 16gb model

I wouldn't have thought removing a MicroSD card slot would save much space or weight. A MicroSD card is tiny as too the housing for the slot.
For me, the want of a MicroSD card slot is not for expanding storage space cheaply but more for being able to transfer files to/from MicroSD easily. There's many situations when I would want to do this with a MicroSD card from my other devices or it is a MicroSD card from someone else I am with. In those situations, it's sometimes easier than faffing around with cables, bluetooth or Wifi. So the slot just gives another option.
That's true. Having microSD is handy. Especially if you want to transfer a lot of files or big files.
But, my point is that no-microSD will not stop me buying a tablet
After I owned Nexus S, I don't think it is important anymore as long as the internal storage is big enough.
Again, this is my own preference

The one released in Aust. last week is a 16GB no SD slot model. I haven't seen a confirmation of the one that has the SD slot but have heard rumours that it will be thinner and up to 32GB.
I thought the internal memory was available to both system & data doesn't this mean that the internal memory would be an ext flavour rather than a FAT?
I see your point and I have to agree that it does seem a bit cheaper just to get the 16gb model and buy a 16gb sd card unless u plan on being a data/movie packrat on ur Tab in which case you will want to get the 32gb model as well as a 32gb sd card.

I don't care if it cost more. I would rather get a 32 GB and have another 32 GB of SD card storage.
I wish that there is a 64 GB version with SD card slot so that I can have 32 GB SD card to make the total of 96 GB.

16GB. Although this whole $50 for 8GB and $100 for 16GB upgrade in the smartphone world really bothers me. It's just expensive.
I will probably go with 8. I always go with the cheapest version of any phone I get in order to upgrade to something down the line that much easier without losing too much, if any.
Plus I keep my phones VERY clean so I don't have a bunch of clutter with music, movies, and games. I probably have around 200 songs, 1 movie, and emulators for gaming so I won't come anywhere close to 8gb.
Wait till they discontinue the 8gb version and release the 32gb version. They have done it with the Nexus 7.
I predict 8gb version will only have around 6gb of actual storage space, in order word, it can't store nothing. Even if you don't need more space, buying the 8gb version will lose its value for resale in the future imo, especially if a 32gb version come along.

I'm weak willed and can't hold out to wait for a possible 32GB version, so I'm going for the 16GB as soon as it's released. 16GB barely cuts it, but if I try hard enough I can fit all my data onto about 13GB. Hopefully the formatted space is at least that much :/
I have 12.27gb available on mine. But I only use about 5gb including 3 ROMs backed up and about a gig worth of mods, and about 150 pics/vids. I don't game much (leave that for tablets) and I stream through Spotify/G Music.

I have a 16gb 1X and 12.27 available. 2.34 GB internal available and 9.93 gb available on sd

If I remember correctly from using the Galaxy Nexus, since it doesn't have microSD, the entire space (16gb) will be available for apps installation. Though someone should confirm this.

True this less the space used for system apps. Since ics the storage has been just one big chunk unlike the previous gb and lower where there is a dedicated partition for system apps, usb storage, etc

Also taking advantage of Google music's 20,000 cloud storage, think the music matching service is something that is very underated!!
All I will have on phone is a few tidbit games (angry birds etc) and any important photos and stuff.
8gb will be plenty imo.

different with a phone IMO than a tablet.
I have a 32GB Xoom - I use 16GB if that - a large chunk is on photos/videos (around 6GB)
I have an Evo3D with a 32GB sdcard - I use 20GB of that. Again a large chunk is on photos/videos (around 7GB)
all my music is via Google Music
I worry that 16GB isn't going to be enough.
I wouldn't feel so bad if all the games available stored their save data in /sdcard/... rather than /data/data
Annoyingly it feels like you _have_ to root to get access to transfer or backup saved data.
e.g. angry birds, world of goo, sonic 4 ep 2 (oddly sonic 4 ep 1 saves on sdcard, but ep 2 doesn't)
I wish all developers of games would follow some guidelines on where to store the save files.
I can't decide. I don't use my phone for music or films and my HTC Desire doesn't have anywhere near 8GB being used. That said, for the price and the fact that it doesn't have an SD slot, I'm still tempted by the 16gb

I'm in for the 16. I keep a very clean phone, too, but I envision situations where I'd fill it up with a video (I've done this with previous phones at family holidays).

on 16G Nexus 7 and GN I constantly run out of space and I am a clean guy - upload and delete all photos, videos, etc and still get Out of Space warning from the system. A few games you may decide to play and boom, each taking 1.5G-2G - your space is gone. I assume next year we will see games taking more and more so we will be hitting the limit with 16G even sooner.
BTW 16G devices show around 12G space total, so 4G must be taken by system apps or for swap space or something similar.
Even if you do not play any games today and use iPod for music - what if you decide to change that tomorrow, or store a few photos/videos. 8G will not last you enough and you will be longing for a new decide quickly, so that $50 savings on extra 8G may come to haunt you.
16GB, though I'd happily pay more for 32 or even 64.
I've a Nexus 7 3G/32GB that I'm selling and I've just ordered a Gt-n5100 but I'm very scared about hdd capacity. Note 8 is only available in my country in 16GB format so I had no choice but since all apps are installed in primary memory and not on SD card now I'm asking to myself if I did a good buy. What can you tell me about this? Are 16gb enough for you? I changed my previous nexus 7 16gb (poor memory) for the 32gb version and it's true that they haven't SD expansion slot.. Do you think SD could solve the problem in any way?

I came from a Nexus 7 32gb, via a Note 10.1.
Unless you are a hard-core gamer then the 16gb is plenty sui long as you supplement with a micro sd card on which to store your media files etc.
The Note 8.0 is definitely the better device by a good measure, congratulations I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Having the microsd slot helps a lot. I have a DROID dna with only 16gb and I wish it had more. Games and media take the most space on a device. Media can easily be store on the microsd.

16 GB is more than enough for me. I really only use the tablet for the note taking function. But even my 16 GB Galaxy S4 with a large medical library downloaded to the device, still leaves me with like 4 GB free. And I have all of my music stored on the main memory. If you move all of your personal data to SD, I don't see how you can run out of space on the main memory, using it just for apps and app data.

The fact is that on Galaxy Note 8 you will get around 9 GB for personal storage only on internal SD card as factory default (rest consumed by the default apps etc).
I had to add a 64GB MicroSd card (almost full already) and that gives me some room for stuff.
All depends on your usage but if you need space frequently , you cannot go wrong with an additional 32 GB micro SD card.
btw this tablet should also support the MicroUSB flash drives. so I would not worry much as this has room for expansion if need ever comes to that.

On my AT&T LTE Note 8 with 16GB internal memory I find that after loading all of my apps (76) and with the Samsung and AT&T apps and the operating system and TouchWiz I have 9.2GB free internal memory. This agrees with your findings.
No. 16g is not enough. Real dopey amount of storage for a tablet like this.

You cannot just say 16 gbs isn't enough. it's very subjective. On both my phone and tablet, even 8 gbs would've been enough for me. I don't play games or store moves/music. I use Slacker, Netflix and read news/magazines.

agree completely; I put a 32 gig external sd card to store music, movies, and pix...I have over 100 apps on here, and still have 4.5 gigs of main memory space available..

The issue here is games. Clearly Samsung aren't factoring in gamers to their target market for this tablet. The gpu - the Mali 400 is evidence of that. The minimal amount of internal storage also shows Samsung don't expect N8.0 users to install more than 2 or 3 triple A titles at most.
'The Bard's Tale' alone is 3.5GB. 'Horn' is 2.7GB. 'Max Payne Mobile' is 1.4GB.
Bam, there's all your space gone, with hardly anything left for productivity apps.
no offense, but I doubt that any tablet is marketed specifically for gamers; they are more for business professionals/email/magazine/web surfers...
Hard core gamers use consoles or gaming pc's generally, and those folks dont think of tablets as effective hardware for them..
If we actually had 16GB it might be enough. On first power up you only have like 9GB to use...kind of false advertising.

So factor that into the design so that when you advertise a 16GB storage device people actually GET 16GB off storage. I think there is already a class action lawsuit against Samsung for the S4 due to this issue.

as you well know, EVERY device/tablet/laptop/pc maker pretty much says the same kind of thing when it comes to advertising the "size" of their machine; you know that a 2 TB computer never really has 2TB of "available space" on it, since the os/swapfile etc has to go somewhere, and this is how electronics have been sold for a long long time.
I'm not saying I dont agree with you, but I dont see this kind of "unrealistic" advertising od device space/capacity changing any time soon..

Well, if the class action lawsuit does enough damage and more start being held to task, it might change. I also get what you are saying, but the criticism of Samsung right now is that it's not just 1-2GB out of 16GB...it's almost half. In other words, it is unreasonable and excessive in it's advertising. So as much as I've been a Samsung supporter over the years, I hope they get beat pretty bad and start to change this negative pattern.

if it's like the s4 then it's got a reserved 6GB partition (at least i read that somewhere). so they should advertise the useable space and the amount of memory shared for the video.
why they don't let you do a fresh install like any pc is beyond me. tablets have come too far to be still treated as less than a computer.
i'm still on the fence about getting the 8. i keep adding it to cart at amazon and then closing the tab. i almost got it at walmart after seeing the box and falling in love!
there's alot to love with this tablet..nobody who has seen one or bought one has anything bad to say about it...
I would like to see the Apps2SD stuff come from the Galaxy S4 or a setting to use the card in place of the internal data mounted as the sd card but yes, it is enough for me.
I would have bought a 64GB or 32GB model if possible but as games are the only big local data I have - I could use the card or a usb drive if I needed to have offline access to movies and music and such. Everything but games lives on my local server or in a cloud service; often both. So I can live with the storage.

I was planning to buy the follow up nexus tablet for more than a year now, but the specs are such a let down! My biggest gripe is the max 32 gb storage. I'm OK with 16gb being base, I was never going to get 16 gb anyway. But 32 gb as maximum storage is just too little. I don't need an sd-card and sure I can put some stuff in the cloud, but I won't have wifi at all times! Maybe in the USA, but not where I live. (I don't even prefer cloud services for everything)
Even the nexus 6 has 64 gb of storage, and that's a phone which has a sim card and is almost always connected to the internet! Same with RAM. Why would you put less ram in a tablet and more in a smaller phone? Same with screen. Why use lower resolution on the n9 than on the n6? It makes no sense to me. If all can be crammed in a smaller package, then why not in a bigger package with a bigger battery.
Not to mention the 80$ for an increase in 16 gb.

But my thought on this is that Google wanted HTC to have a place under the sun : I wouldn't be surprised to find out before Xmas or shortly thereafter (Lollipop exclusivity for X months, maybe, just enough to let all other makers develop their own offering) that HTC has tablets ready just to address those weaknesses, and maybe add a micro-sd reader to the mix.

Yeah the storage or lack thereof is probably the biggest letdown. Its sad to see Apple making Google look foolish in this regard. Can't even really say that cost is the reason with numerous 128GB consumer SSD options for ~$100. I really don't get it. The weird part when you think about it, is that the Nexus Player seems to be the best part of yesterday's announcement.

Totally agree except I thought nexus 6 and 9 both had same resolution?
And I think nexus 6 should have just got 2 GB of ram and made it cheaper.
And I wouldn't even hesitate to get the nexus 9 if the 32 GB was 399. But 480 is way too much for just increased storage. The storage increase probably doesn't cost them more than a few dollars. Now they're acting like Apple who charge 100 more. I used to like that they only charged 50 more

16 gb is still a viable option because there are so many people out there still using a fraction of the 16 gb provided to them.
More storage options other than 32 should be there, but hey, don't ya think htc/google thought about it?

Let me preface the obvious: this is all IMO. Having said that, I am constantly juggling games and keeping a watch on storage because 16GB just doesn't cut it. Considering that the most popular apps are games, and they've deprecated the usefulness of an external SD storage, they really should up that status quo. The N6 is a good step, the N9 with 16GB seems all the more bizarre in comparison.
If the Nexus 9 had a proper AMOLED screen and more storage it would be amazing but I'm extra glad I got a Tab S now. No point to AOSP if the hardware is lacking. The only reason to lust for N9 is K1 and that just isn't enough.

I've never maxed out my space in my entire life with my smartphones. I couldn't care less.

Im really not sure, I contacted google about this twice yesterday and both times they could not come up with an answer but would email me within 24 hours. still waiting though so Ill post when I find out.

I'm more disappointed by the lack of wireless charging. I have it on my Nexus 7 and a Galaxy S4, and it's spoiled me. Feels like I'd be going backwards by not having it.
My two biggest gripes are wireless charging and the max 32gb. The only thing that makes this remotely palatable is the MicroSD slot but still a 128GB card is going to add $100 to the cost just to get this to the point where it's as functional as an iPad.

No MicroSD slot. That's why we're all complaining.
What do you guys use memory for? I use the majority for my music, I travel with my entire library which is 40GB, but I'm planning to keep the hard copy on my S4 and just use the cloud for N9. Still probably going to get the 32GB N9 to fit more movies and tv shows.
With black friday coming up, I'm looking for a large micro SD card. My main debate is through speed. I want the 128GB Sandisk microSD card, but it's capped to 30MB/s sequential reads, while the 64GB extreme goes up to 80MB/s. Can the tablet take advantage of those higher speeds? I want as little a difference between the internal memory and the external memory as possible. My only concern is 64GB may not be enough, as I download a metric ton of games, and I'm blowing through the internal memory. Basically, I'm asking for buying advice, and this is all very specific to the shield tablet. I have no other intended uses for the SD card.

Is that what the shield tablet is actually able to write at? If so, then it's worth it for the increased data loading in my games. That's my main concern. Also, how efficient is app2SD type transferring? I want to know if my SD card will be used effectively, or if I will still end up running out of storage space.

There's a new version of the 128gb that rated 48mb/s. But if you want faster card you can only get them in 64gb. Like the Samsung pro at 90mb/s.

I'm afraid to ask how much this new 128GB model is. I can't justify spending $200 on a micro SD solely for tablet storage.

I see. But I think even at 48mp/s, it's not gonna be the same as internal. If you want something close then the Samsung Pro 64gb with 90mb/s is your best bet. But you are only going to match the read speed. The internal memory's write speed is still faster by 2x. But I really doubt you're going to care about that much if you're just transferring 1-2gb of data to the sdcard. And I'm assuming these are game data? Once those are transferred, it's pretty much done with. Even with my 64gb card now with 11.73 mb/s write speed is plenty fast when I move files to the card. If there are game saves that needs to write to the card, they are gonna be small data. I have about 20 game data on the SD card using Folder Mount and I don't find any issue launching them. The only one that I noticed takes longer is Half Life.
Yeah that definitely sounds good. Faster the better. I want a seamless experience.
Does anyone have experience with PNY sd cards? I saw one for $110 that's a 128GB card with 40MB/s sequential read speeds. How would the card perform, ans would it be enough?
Personally I don't think the extra speed will make that big of a difference. Those benchmarks provide controlled and consistent circumstances which are not realistic. Almost nothing you do on the tablet in normal use will push the read speeds. Tbh write speeds could be more important, as they are typically much slower then write speeds. I'm not saying read speed doesn't matter, but that there is certainly a diminishing return on speeds.

Currently that's the fastest 128 GB card I've found, but you're going to pay for it out the nose. I'd vote to wait a bit and see if you can swing it with at 64 GB UHS card first, like the Samsung Pro series. The faster the card the more seamless the experience will be, and even though use will not mimic the benchmark situation it's still going to take less time to write and read to a very fast card in daily use so it will make a difference for sure.

What about if I simply want to use it to load up and watch videos? No gaming nothing else. Is a SanDisk 128GB microSDXC @ 30MB good enough for that? Like say, this one?

Thanks for your help guys. Ended up buying a Sandisk UHS-3 64GB card for $100. So far so good. Although android's sd card support for apps is SO BAD.
