Bootloader Unlock Questions - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

What is the word on unlocking our Bootloaders?
I've been watching this topic for quite some time and I can't find anything new or updated on the subject.
It's almost like everyone gave up on trying because it seems impossible.

The bootloader for our device is locked down, it will 99% never be unlocked. We don't even have stable root all we have is crappy eng boot root. There is no development for this phone at all, unless you have the international version. Best advice I can give you sell this terrible device and either buy the international version or a whole new phone all together that isn't carrier branded as they all lock down their bootloaders. I'm jumping ship also, only got this phone because it was free.

Strongly considering buying the S8+ international model from a buddy out of country and just wiring the money over to buy it for me and ship it. As much as I love this phone, I like root more.

Was considering buying one also but tbh prolly gonna hop onto the google hype train and get a pixel xl first gen for right now then when all the bugs are worked out on the pixel 2 xl I will upgrade to that. Also check out swappa, easy way to buy phones and you can pick which one you want.

So looks like it's finally official. HTC One coming to Verizon later this summer.

Who is going to make the jump?
I have been on the Incredible for just over 3 years now and ready to make the jump. It has been a great ride but this seems like the perfect time and phone to make the switch.
Anyone else?
I should be getting One (see what I did there?). Hopefully they don't disable HTCdev, which is doubtful they won't based on past devices. That, or S-OFF tricks will still work. And hopefully they'll get a Google edition.
But there's still time for the next Nexus to be announced. So I'll end up getting one of the two.

This is what I have been waiting on... a friend is supposedly going to hand me (yep.. free) his GS3.. which of course I'll root and put AOSP on... then I will purchase the One (off contract of course.. they are going to pry that unlimited data from my cold dead hands) once I see that the Verizon version has been rooted.. unlocked.. and has some good roms going on.
At which point I'll pass the GS3 onto someone who needs it (who has already claimed it.. before I even have it!)
Yea I hope this new version for Verizon gets rooted soon but that still not going to have me hold out at launch. BTW I am in the same boat as you, buying off contract so I can keep unlimited data.
Do you know where I will be able to purchase (when the time comes) the phone from? Just use Amazon or Best Buy? They will sell the phone on it's own right?

You should be able to buy it from anyone outright. Though you won't really get a deal from anyone that way.. so may as well do it from Verizon directly.
HTC One shipping August 22nd. FINALLY.
Going to wait like a week make sure others can unlock and get it rooted and will probably be making the switch.

And Key Lime Pie (I know its a pipe dream to think it will be announced by end of Sept)...
Would love to know the optimal specs for it before investing in a phone. Especially one that is already 4-6 months old before Verizon even sold it.

Verizon Note 4 thread

Since no one has started one I thought I might do so. Place all of your comments and concerns here.
My concern is..it'll be later than the other carriers since it hasn't even passed through the fcc yet. This entire launch is becoming as bad as the g3 launch
It's past through fcc I saw it earlier today

You have a link? I have seen Sprint and either Tmobile or at&t but not Verizon
*edit* never mind, I see it has passed through. Hopefully this means Verizon won't repeat what it did with the Note 3 and be the last to release it.
One of my pulse news channels named all 4 US major carriers don't have a link for proof but I also have nothing to gain by lying about it

I believe the Verizon version passed through the FCC on September 12th as SM-N910V
My concern is we will be stuck with a locked boatloader forever and not be able to flash custom ROMS!
Yup, locked boot loader forever. Safstrap maybe.
Let's hope root can be accomplished fast.
Phones need to be announced near release dates. I hate having to wait 3,4,5 months for a phone.

Agree. What worries me is the lawsuit from (nvidia?) and the fact that it may need to be classified as a medical device slowing things down even more. Hopefully not, but we'll see.

That could be a problem.
Another benefit of Verizon being last is that the rooting method should exist by then.

that could be it though. take my g3 for example. they said bootloader should become unlockable. well here we are months later and only root yay i really need developer edition note 4 to have everything available at my fingertips
After the G3, I don't think I'm ever buying another phone with a locked bootloader. Just waiting on Samsung to announce a developer edition. That would be the best situation.

That is your opinion. I still have unlimited so I have to buy off contract anyways so no difference in money. And even if Verizon doesn't have much development I can run tmobile stuff and be fine. That's why the developer phones sell out though cause they aren't worth it lol

I have unlimited also. A lot of difference in price. Locked boot loader will drop in price or will be sold for less than what Verizon is asking for. Unlocked will be sold by Samsung for $800 dollars or more and will sell out because they have little stock not because its a hot item for Verizon.
I have Verizon, why would I buy a Verizon phone to use with T-Mobile? Why not buy a T-Mobile Note? T-Mobile always gets unlocked and you save money.

Price was $699 for developer edition last year. $750 to my door. And they choose to make only a few it's a simple software unlock just the general public doesn't have access to it.
And I have Verizon too but a Verizon developer edition is basically a tmobile device with Verizon radios. You can run tmobile recovery/roms/kernels etc

$750 is a lot of money for an unlocked boot loader to get one or two ROMs that are full of bugs. Also, You lose s-pen features (i dont really use the spen on my note 3) and other tw features like fingerprint, heartbeat monitor, and other stuff that is never ported correctly.
Verizon boot loader locked device can also be used with T-Mobile. Pop in your Sim and you are ready to go.
So what ROM are you running on your note 3 now?

$750 is a lot of money but I'm going to spend that anyways on my device for next 8+ months. Not going to buy used not my cup of tea for that expensive of a phone. Who said you lose those features? You can keep the spen etc they are enhanced not lost.
And I sold my note 3 awhile back to save some money for note 4
But when I did I usually ran hyper with imos kernel. But I also liked to experiment with pacman and other aosp builds

[Q] Just bought S7 Edge, still in my return period. Switch to 10 (VZW) for root?

I'm coming from an iPhone so I have no brand/device loyalty, but root/jailbreaking is high priority for me. It doesn't seem like the S7e has any advantages over the 10 besides screen (honestly not the biggest fan of the curved screen anyway). Should I make the switch?
Yes.

Lol, iPhone 6 Plus here as well. And I can't wait to get rid of this overpriced junk. I can't do crap with IOS like what I can do on Android. #power10 it is.....beside I never fall for S7 or edge when it first release. I'm glad hTC waited.
I returned my s7e today and ordered the 10; I found that unless you have the hands of a giant, you will continually hit the edges and cause miss types/screen jumps. I also couldn't deal with the lack of ad blocker and the DPI was too big, even with the new native scaling. AND I thought the curved edges would be in addition to the screen, but they really occupied about 1/8" on either side.
I agree with everything you said, Rus. I ended up returning it and getting on that pre-order train too!! What whatt

Remember phones bought from Verizon store/online are IMEI blacklisted from using HTCdev. It will probably come with a ton of Verizon bloat. It is also not a guarantee to be able to get root. It could come in a week, or could take a year like the M9.or maybe never. A java card could also possibly work but not a 100% yet. Due your research, only way to guarantee root is by ordering from HTC's website. Just FYI.

Sadly no, only thing that will get you is the uh-oh protection. The unlocked version "might" work on Verizon but we wont know until someone try's it and sees if it has the CDMA radios. On paper with the posted specs it should but in my experience with verizon you may never know. They got the money to bully company like HTC to do what they want. take a read at this forum for more info.http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/unlocked-htc-10-verizon-t3357874

Yeah Verizon is the devil. Finally making the switch myself to ATT. I am done with the hoops you have to jump through to get access to the device you own. The Verizon version of the M9 gave quite a bit of trouble to get root but @jcase and the sunshine team finally did it so they may still have a trick up their sleave to get root on the Verizon 10 without using HTVdev to unlock the boot loader. Sadly the only way to 100% guarantee root with Verizon is a nexus. Don't give up home there are a lot of very talented devs on here but sadly its never a guarantee and can take time.
I just did my preorder through VZW. I know the risks as far as maybe not being able to unlock/root., but I just paid off my LG v10 for this because I know HTC, and I will get something going. I hope the great developers from the M8 series are here .
I may be a bit too excited for thursday to get here....

So I've had a 6p and may get a 7edge and it looks like there is nothing root or ROM rise for the sprint models... Do these have any updates?

For that type of money you're willing to spend on a phone that's about to be a year old, why not buy a pixel from Google? Especially coming from a 6p, seems like that'll make more sense.

Ive been going back and forth about the pixel... In short My 6p broke and they're sending me a new one in 2 days... I don't want to open it I'm going to sell it so I needed a new phone now... The pixel isn't available, only at best buy and not the XL... plus it's the verizon edition which has a locked bootloader.
Edit: It was also 10 percent off, I had a 100 dollar gift card and will hoefully get 400 for the 6p with the extras I have with it.

Hey man, check your inbox when u have a chance.

Wondering about development interest for roms and such?

Well I gave up my lg v20 to go back to the s7 (tmobile). It was an impulse trade. Now I've regretted it because of the lack of development in the areas of roms, themes, locked bootloader, and such. MY question is this, what's your opinion of the s8 and s8+..? Are they going to go down in flames or will there be a resurgence of interest in samsung again?
Your answers will help me decide whether to get one right off the bat or wait for another flagship device that's coming out in the next couple of months.
With Samsung's current path to block root I doubt there will be much development at least not for a while. I haven't rooted my last 3 phones (note 5&7 v20), because it's become such a hassle anymore.

Thanks for your reply, I was wondering if the s8 was going to have a locked bootloader. That'll make my decision easily.
I would almost put money on the bootloader being locked. Not saying one of the devs here won't get around it, but it could take some time.

Development is becoming more difficult on all phones not just Samsung. Google are making things more difficult for developers. The days of ROM and Kernel development reached it's peak years back and has been in decline ever since. Especially because important features rely on having a locked down device. Also, one of the reasons people developed custom software is to add more features, many of which are part of the standard package when buying a new phone these days.
If you want flexibility and enjoy the development on XDA then Oneplus are your best choice. They are getting most of the attention now. It's the new Nexus. I'll get an S8 and if I get bored, I'll sell and get the next Oneplus 4 or whatever it'll be called. So I can play.
Get an international, word is the Snapdragons will have locked bootloaders across the board in the same fashion as the Note 7. Time will tell.

Hoping they will be same as S7/S7 Edge in terms of dev support as both S8 and S8+ will run on Exynos Chip Worlwide other than US
I really hope Samsung will offer unlocked phones like LG is offering if you buy direct. I buy my phones so I want to root and keep it as current as possible. Thats the biggest complaint I have on my Note 4 is the way ATT/Samsung update its ridiculous. I mean over a year wait for the last android update for Note 4. I would buy a Stock Android S8 or S8+ and pay a small premium if thats what it took.
Sounds that way

I've looked all over for this, but no luck. Would you give me a link to buy (direct) an unlocked or unlockable G6? Thanks!
I'm still holding out, haven't thrown my s7 away just yet, to get back into the v20. so I'll just keep waiting for the word on the G6 or the s8+ ,, Hopefully something happens and they unlock that boot-loader.
T-Mobile's version of the G6 bootloader is unlocked.

I feel like rooting and ROMing is dead. You have to go through a massive hassle now to even get your hands on a phone that allows it. A real shame.

It appears now like the phone may be reporting unlocked but isn't actually unlocking. Too soon to tell on that but it wouldn't be the first time for LG. It's old advice but more relevant by the day, if root is important do not buy in until it's proven.

Easy...just buy a exynos version, no locked BL (at least the note 7 and s7 edge arent locked).
No point in buying snapdragon based sammy products now as it seems they are locking them down.
