Missing out with just bluetooth 4.x? - ZTE Nubia Z17 Questions & Answers

One of the few things holding me back is the Nubia having older BT4 tech compared to Oneplus 5 having BT5.
On top of that the Nubia Z17S upgrade due in Oct still only has BT4.
Is this is a big fail or is BT5 overhyped?

The phone is capable of bt5 (it's a feature of the SoC). It might be enabled in a future upgrade (it's what happened with the HTC U11). The advantages of 5 are double the potential speed and range. Range is only an issue with speakers in my opinion and speed doesn't come into play for me. Whenever I need speed I use a with connection (normally ftp, sometimes WiFi direct). I'd be more concerned with the lack of aptX.

Will the new Advantage come out soon ? My friend thinks that they will release a revision early next year, but I honestly think we have about a half a year left till we see anything.

if the universal is anything to go by it could be a few years and waiting !
The real name for the advantage is the X7500 a few months after it was released an even newer version called the X7501 came out for the US market, and this might be what your friend is thinking of ! however newer is not always better, the X7501 is identical in every way except it has LOST 1 of the 2 cameras from the X7500, gained an FM radio (which might be coming to the X7500 anyway as some reckon the hardware exists but has been disabled) and lastly is shiped with windows mobile 6 instead of 5 which is a moot point as you can now just download Win 6 and upgrade your X7500 anyway.
My speculation rests on any successor primarily being an upgrade having WM6.1 and a SSD hard drive of greater capacity.
I would pray for better video performance as well.

My wish lists are:
- No hardware keyboard. Althernatively, have one that slides out, like the ones in Toshiba Protege G920 or Nokia N810.
- No magnet please.
- Uses SSD and at least 32GB
- Use SDHC rather than miniSDHC. SDHC seems to be always ahead in terms of moving into higher capacity.
- WM7
- Camera that takes acceptable pictures indoor. The present one does not work unless you're outdoor.
- 5 MP main camera and a VGA front camera.
- Less weight.
- Maintains 5" screen but reduce the size of the metal frame around the screen, so overall size is reduced.
- Embedded ear piece, so that use of BT headset becomes entirely optional.
- Vibration for phone
- More rounded and thinner profile.
- Infra, so that I can make it my remote control
- FM radio tuner for TMC and musics.
- Built-in TV tuner
- 800x480 resolution - Not too sure about this one, due to concern over software compatibilty issues. Otherwise, the shape would resember a handphone better.
- Faster internet browser, like the one in Nokia N810
- 802.11n for faster connection
- USB 2.0
- Latest bluetooth.
- GPS Assist, ,so that I can get signal inside buildings and tunnels.
Come on HTC, you should be able to make this.

- No magnet please. I agree
- Uses SSD and at least 32GB Can you say 'Uber Expensive?
- Use SDHC rather than miniSDHC. SDHC seems to be always ahead in terms of moving into higher capacity. Deffo. I really can't see how HTC is saving that much space by using miniSDHC
- WM7 Yay!!!
- Camera that takes acceptable pictures indoor. The present one does not work unless you're outdoor. Agree 100% .. for something that's being marketed as an 'All in one device' the camer really sucks
- 5 MP main camera and a VGA front camera.
- Less weight. If possible, but considering the extra features everyone wants etc??
- Maintains 5" screen but reduce the size of the metal frame around the screen, so overall size is reduced.
- Embedded ear piece, so that use of BT headset becomes entirely optional.
- Vibration for phone You have no idea how much I miss a vibrating alert on my phone now lol
- More rounded and thinner profile. The shape of the Athen wors really well, provided you use the stock keyboard, otherwise it feels really weird to hold, so yeah, I'd agree
- Infra, so that I can make it my remote controlThis should have been in our current devices, sure, it may be old tech, but there are still so many uses for it
- FM radio tuner for TMC and musics.Aye
- Built-in TV tuner AYE!!!
- 800x480 resolution - Not too sure about this one, due to concern over software compatibilty issues. Otherwise, the shape would resember a handphone better. Provided there weren't any issues, then yes, however I'm quite happy with VGA
- Faster internet browser, like the one in Nokia N810 Yup, although I think we'll have to rely on 3rd party for this
- 802.11n for faster connection Yup
- USB 2.0 Yup, with support for a wider range of external HDDs
- Latest bluetooth. Not a big user of BT, so I cant comment
- GPS Assist, ,so that I can get signal inside buildings and tunnels. I think GPS signal on this device sucks all over, anything to improve it would be great
Come on HTC, you should be able to make this.

Just my opinion
total agreement from me with regards to the slide out keyboard. i have seen a device for the pc that projects the display of a keyboard onto what ever you place the device onto, sort of like a laser projection, that would be sweet but your battery would die after one text message or email!!
The size has always been an issue for me, but we knew that it was a monster/powerhouse/umpc/ugly brick shaped phone when we purchased the athena/ameo!!!
as for the camera, dudes, if you have money to throw around at the advanced phones...... buy a digi cam. C'mon, its a phone! Having said all this, im gonna confuse you all by saying, i want the new htc sprint with vista/touchflo. hehehe
I mentioned this in some other thread, but, here it goes again

The ATHENA wish list
Dear HTC,
1) Give us the capability to use our ATHENA WITHOUT speakerphone always ON, we want to put it close to the ear, you know BT is a technology always in BETA testing!
2) Turn the RADIO feature ON (we know it has the hardware capability)
3) FIX the REALVGA issues, give us the power to run programs at different DPI resolution, we know, REALVGA comes from you!
You, dear HTC, have lost the first place in Windows Mobile standard market, improve or die is the lesson, we love your devices, but... 9150 is coming

Bluetooth 4.0

Hi!
Quick question.
Is there any way you can check whether N7 has got the latest bluetooth? Meaning, the latest N7s have bluetooth 4.0 (Low energy, Smart, whatever they call it)
I was thinking maybe you can look up S/N in store and be sure you got it before purchase.
I really need BT4.0 for my sport equipment.
Cheers!
You're in luck Mr. Damon! You'll soon be working on that impeccable physique with this gem of a tablet strapped to your torso!
Its wifi also takes up a ridiculously low amount of power btw (same chip).
If you mean Bluetooth Smart (aka Bluetooth Low Energy), the Nexus 7 does *NOT* have built-in support for it.
If you want to see support for it, go here, log in w/ your google account and click on the Star at the upper left to make it more important:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=33371
iOS and WP8 both have OS support for it (the GATT BT API). Android Jelly Bean does not
Hush man, you're scaring away Matt Damon! Geez... It's not like he would've noticed anyway. Now next time we'll see him on tv holding some iCrap -.-
Besides, the N7 hardware more than supports BTLE, it's only a matter of time before an update enables it.
LOL. The real Matt Damon is from Boston
Yep, I know the N7 hardware supports BTLE, but as of now, there's no support for it
Even the popular Samsung S3 has no software support for it
And HTC devices don't (same issue as S3...even w/ the 3rd party broadcom-le library, a shared library that has to be provided by the manufacturer is missing).
AFAIK, only a subset of Motorola devices do (mostly their RAZR ones).
I've been digging for a while tonight...got a bluetooth LE heart rate monitor today and went digging for why it couldn't be seen by my S3 and ended up checking my N7 too

Why i end up with the shield

this thread is gonna be about why i decided to buy nvidia shield.
but i'm not really a pro about this, so don't see this as a good info source
i'm actually not even sure if what i heard is correct, so if i'm wrong on anything, or know of a better choice, please do correct me
and thanks for reading
so i've been wanting a portable device since my last phone (droid incredible 2) sunk miserably into the washing machine
i don't really want a phone, because no one ever calls me (there are a lot of reasons i don't want a phone, this is just one of them)
so i turned onto tablets which brings me to the nexus 7 because it's in my budget of 300$
but there are a few minor things
i need a sd card slot, and a hdmi port, which both nexus 7 don't have
but since there aren't much portable (in which i mean less then 7 inches) devices that supports an hdmi port, i just decided to ignore that
which brings me to the nexus 4, which is a lot more portable which i like
and then i saw nvidia shield getting a price drop, which brings me to the topic, the nvidia shield
it's got a hdmi port, which i almost already gave up on, it also have a micro sd card slot which the nexus devices didn't have
it have a tegra 4 processor clocked at 1.9 ghz , which is better then the nexus 7, and even the nexus 4 which is at the same price point
it have 2gb of ram which nexus 7 only have one
and those are the reasons, which comes to the point that it's nothing about gaming
and that's why people are gonna think i'm dumb
so just to clear it up, i also have a gtx 660 oc which enables the pc streaming feature
and it also happens that i'm working on my own steam box, and got stuck at can't find a wireless controller for a pc
so those are all my reasons that i'm getting the nvidia shield, thanks for reading
again if i'm wrong about anything, please do correct me
also, this is my first time posting a thread, i tried my best to make sure everything is ok, but please do correct me too if i was wrong
your also welcome to discuss on the reply section
Actually sounds like you've done a bunch of homework on this already.
I can point out a few things about streaming...
1. It's possible to plug a wireless X-box 360 controller adapter into your PC and play from another nearby room via streaming, but the range isn't great. It also hits item #2.
2. Streaming quality - I've tried to find good streaming solutions in my home. I've got all the different "flavors" of Splashtop, I've tried different types of VNC and such. I'm going to be trying RemoteFX soon with RDP, but can't comment on that one yet. SHIELD has, so far, beat them all hands-down. The video quality is incredible compared to software like Splashtop. Latency is almost non-existent and I can play games like Monaco from my bed easily.
3. Wifi Bandwidth - You'll need a decent 5GHz wifi to really enjoy it. Unlike Splashtop, this takes up a lot of wifi bandwidth. But honestly, if you're going to stream over wifi, you might as well use some serious bandwidth for it. No point is having crappy quality just to have a bunch of unused wifi (at least in my opinion).
4. Comfort - Trying to play a game in bed or on the couch with a tablet and controller is uncomfortable to me. They're not really "built together" in a way that I find user friendly. I used to have an old Windows Tablet PC (before Apple even made a tablet and tried to claim first), and the problem with the keyboard for it was that you ended up with the screen on a "stand" and a keyboard. The keyboard was comfortable, but you couldn't use it in bed or anything because where were you going to put the screen stand?
Hope that give you more info about it, from my personal use cases on the devices.

Will it really be bad over 2.4GHz? I plan on upgrading soon but that's all I have right now. Does the quality suffer most or will it begin to lag first?

Razer ForgeTV Hardware Advantages over FireTV

The Razer ForgeTV looks to be a strong contender that could unseat the FireTV for modding, provided the software is open and hackable. There are a couple big reasons: Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0, and a Snapdragon 805 processor. This makes the device much more viable as a network attached storage device, in addition to faster media playback and access generally.
In addition to this, if the ForgeTV is capable of installing apps to an external storage device, the USB 3.0 speeds should kill any issues with performance that come with the limitations of USB 2.0.
The only real hardware disadvantage to the ForgeTV is the lack of optical audio out, which can thankfully be overcome with a usb soundcard, if that is really a huge issue for some people (it is for me- I like using spotify through my receiver without turning on my TV).
The biggest concern is the implementation of Lollipop. How the software will be locked down and what restrictions this places (specifically on bluetooth devices like wiimotes that do not work past android 4.2, and any issues caused by lollipop's handling of external storage and sdcard access) is a concern as always, and I'm sure there will be numerous issues to overcome on that front.
In any case, I'm excited for the release, and will certainly be picking one up when they go on sale. Let's use this thread as a place to discuss the transition, as I'm sure a lot of people will be jumping from the FireTV to the ForgeTV if the software proves flexible enough.
I'm definitely intrigued by this device. Hoping for a device with HDMI pass through, but other than that this device has everything I'm looking for. Really excited about a device that is Googlecast ready. USB 3.0 and gigabit Ethernet are big as well. Hopefully this won't be like some android phones and stay way behind on updates. That would be the main benefit of the nexus player over this I believe. As long as it's rootable, we should be ok.

WiFi slow performance, is this fixable ??

Hi Xda,
Got this new ASUS Zenfone 3 Zoom ZE553KL phone and wondering if I am able to change the wifi driver or system configuration because its locked down to only 802.11g often my phone gets only 54mpbs !! While my other phone 150mbps on my 2.4g router. Also the phone does not support 5ghz or dual band so it only can go up to 72mbps in the best case which it is not even capable of 5 out of the 10 times I use it.
This really sucks because I see a notable connectivity slow down compared to my older phones !! When downloading or watching a YouTube video.. Ridiculous that Asus did cut corners on the wifi connectivity back to a standard that was introduced between 2003 and 2009 !!!
The Snapdragon specifications website shows it should support 802.11ac 5g.
In my old Lenovo phone sits the same SoC, and it does have proper wifi connectivity.
Did ASUS cheat, is it really a snapdragon or a Mediatek processor? Mac address vendor of the wifi hardware shows Asus rebranding.
Can I even root this puppy?
Snapdragon specs say:
Wi-Fi Standards: 802.11ac Wave 2, 802.11a/b/g, 802.11n
Wi-Fi Spectral Bands: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz
Peak speed: 433 Mbps
Channel Utilization: 20/40/80 MHz
MIMO Configuration: 1x1 (1-stream)
Peak QAM: 256 QAM
Wi-Fi Features: MU-MIMO, Integrated baseband
Even my 90 euro budget phone from back in 2014 went to up 150mbps..
I also have a bad feeling that there are a lot of cut corners on the wifi hotspot as well that I will have to use weekly for work.
If there's no proper way of fixing this. No more Asus phones for me. I already have a bad feeling that I need to VOID my warranty for it to be able to change anything like usually..
Other issues about the phone:
Bottom screen has two light halo effects in the screen (QC error !!!!)
And like always some problems (bugs) and removed features (latest firmware as of today)
1(bug). Set screen brightness to low, open camera app, close camera app, now the screen brightness will not always go completely down to what it was..
2. Show navigation bar feature missing. Change volume sound cannot be disabled.. Volume increasement half the steps of my Lenovo and previous phones. Blue screeen filter can't be modified, the default setting is useless because you can hardly see the difference.
Pros:
Regular software updates
Good camera
Amoled screen (but if you are unlucky you get a screen with halo in the bottom)
5000mah battery !
Other than that it seems to be a good phone for this amount of money.
You seems to be very confused. I've absolutely no problems with the wifi. It easily reaches 8-9MB/s on my 2.4GHz network and since I don't really care for the inferior 5GHz one that I do have but never use due to much weaker signal.
It's not the best phone in the world, but for the 140 bucks I paid for it, certainly it's a nice one.
I think you've set your expectations too high really.I see you've got a P2, I've had it for a while too and to be honest The Z3Z is better in so many ways, especially Camera, Speaker, Build, Price etc.
I'm afraid that you'll have to deal with the slow speed on wi-fi. I have a 100 mbps connection at home, and all phones i've tested get 95-105 speeds on speed tests, but the Zoom S is stuck at 54mbps. Unless you're willing to develop for this phone and see if there's something barring it from going faster software-wise, it is what it is.

You're right. It indeed is a good phone and the camera is better(speaker wise, I would prefer the Lenovo P2 but that's a personal opinion I guess), but I was disappointed about the WiFi, but yeah I'll just live with it. Seems they just didn't care about 5g for some reason. In my region 5G works a lot better then 2.4 even on longer range because of a lot of interference on the 2.4 spectrum. But yeah whatever, it works. The speed is indeed not terrible. Have done some more testing also with a WiFi hotspot I made and used in the hotel last time (worked flawlessly). I was in Germany and had a solid 4G connection, I guess the testing was in some way affected because of a poor cell reception or something (testing was done at home), or the DSL line at home had a slowdown at that time also not uncommon to happen..

I just deal with it, it is no big deal. Have been using the phone now for quite some time and it is fine. The only thing that sucks is that often in places where I go 2.4g spectrum is filled up with bull**** and it slows down or loses connection strength, this is why I would prefer 5g also, but alright. It is not going to happen..
Hey, I also had problems with slow WiFi. Almost to the unusable levels.
I've found out that switching Bluetooth OFF. Fixes the problem. Internet works back at full speed provided by ISP, and WiFi at routers' max.
I'm not sure if it's another firmware bug, or issue with MiBand/Bluetooth speakers.
I hope this trick will work for you
