MUST INCLUDE QUALCOMM or MEDIATEK TO COMMENTS OR THREAD TITLE - Moto E4 Questions & Answers

* * * ATTENTION MOTO E4 USERS * * *
Since the Moto E4 has TWO variants (Qualcomm and Mediatek) PLEASE include YOUR variant in the title of your thread or mention your variant in
your comment to reduce confusion within the threads. Here are a few examples:
Comment Examples: I can no longer open photos on my Mediatek device running latest build" or "Can I install Xposed on my Qualcomm Moto E4?"
Thread Examples: "I need help figuring out why my Qualcomm Moto E4 won't boot up." or "Where can I find the latest GApps and Viper Audio links for my
Mediatek Moto E4?"
Qualcomm variants have THEIR OWN Development section. Please ONLY post Qualcomm variant threads and comments in this section. (adding variant to comment or thread title not required in Development section)
Mediatek variants have THEIR OWN Development section. Please ONLY post Mediatek variant threads and comments in this section. (adding variant to comment or thread title not required in Development section)
BOTH variants share ALL other Moto E4 sections, which is why adding Qualcomm or Mediatek is so important.
To increase the visibility, chance of receiving an answer, or response to your thread or post, you can also add these tags; [QUALCOMM] or [MEDIATEK]
Please follow the above instructions to remain compliant with Forum Rules:
"2. Post using a clear and descriptive subject and message."
Following this will GREATLY REDUCE the confusion within the threads due to the differences in the Qualcomm / Mediatek variants.
Thank you.

Device Description -
Name: Moto E (4) - Nick is Perry
Board: msm8937
Variant: Qualcomm
Android: 7.1.1 Nougat
Bootloader: 0xBA09
Carrier: Metro PCS
Quad Core Processor
Hope that's enough device info for some help.
Ok so currently my bootloader is locked and is currently running on the stock Metro PCS ROM. I came to XDA for my device because every where I look you have people who use the dirty methods of rooting which aren't very reliable. Aka (KingRoot and KingoRoot). I've tried both and they don't work.
So at this point I know you can't Root this phone with the latest one click Root methods. So now I'm looking for the manual ADB/Fastboot method to unlock the bootloader and install any available and working custom recovery such as TWRP or Philz. Then with that flashed I can Root using SuperSU flashable zip.
After that I can work on making a ROM that is DeBloated and DeOdexed, and maybe add some custom mods. Also removing Metro PCS's custom boot animation will happen it adds too much time too the bootup. But this project will have too be a thing of the future as someone needs too upload the files for unlocking this device and recovery.
Hope some of this information will help inspire more work done on this phone.

I made an entire guide in rooting the stock Qualcomm version man, its in my signature, I'm on metro and I'm rooted, have twrp, and I'm running a custom aosip rom. The search bar is your best friend.

It's all been done bro. Search the forum. Root method, custom ROMs, all there. Root with magisk or phh ,(SuperSU gives issues.) And philz recovery has been dead a loooong time. This is a fairly new device, use TWRP.

I already new Philz is dead but some people still use it. I'm 15. Do you know where I can find the Root method? And I'm going to do some of my own research on magisk and phh. Thank you for the reply. Also I'm going to start a new thread I'll post it when I'm finished.

Sure thing bro. this is the root guide for the Qualcomm version.
Philz won't work on nougat devices.

I am wondering how to tell the difference between QUALCOMM and MEDIATEK variant.

Settings/About phone. Perry is Qualcomm, woods is mediatek

Thank you! It says Perry!

Is there any info detailing other differences between the two variants? I bought a charge board for mine on ebay and either I was sold the wrong board, of the boards are different between variants.

[Q] New N900 Owner, is there any need to know root info?

(or is it the N9000? found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2465906)
this is my first non-carrier phone to own. from reading around the General Discussion and Q&A sections, i'm pretty confused.
what kind of info or terms should i know about for this phone in the world of rooting?
for example, a bit of background on myself (and the "need to know" on my past phones).
i had an AT&T Galaxy S3 (d2att/d2lte) for a long while. i rooted it almost instantly with Odin. installed CWM and kept it updated ever since. at first you could only flash TW-based ROMs up to 4.2.2, unless you upgraded to an MJB bootloader and modem then TW-based 4.3+ was flashable.
then i had an AT&T Galaxy S4 (jflteatt/jflte) for a really short while. found out it had a locked bootloader, i used Towelroot to obtain root, but not have a "full" custom recovery, and instead use SafeStrap Recovery (an APK) that flashed ROMs but not the kernel (or something like that?).
* now i have an N900, with TWRP installed. am i restricted only to this section of android development:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/galaxy-note-3-exynos-android-development
* what about these sections?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/development
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/orig-development
* if i wanted to flash CM11, is this model referred to as the "hlte"?
http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=hlte
* should i stay away from automatic updates? is there something in Titanium Backup that i should freeze?
and i'm sure i have more questions. but can't think of any right now.

You have a ha3g model as its called. DO NOT try to use non exynos specific roms, kernels, or recoveries.
As for the rest, it's up to you.
Sent from my leanKernel 3.4 powered stock 4.4.2 (NF1) SM-N900T
that explains that. so in regard to sections, guess i'm stuck with just this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/galaxy-note-3-exynos-android-development
also, i didn't see "ha3g" listed on CM's website:
http://download.cyanogenmod.org/
and. in regard to my past phones, bootloaders were a big hassle when new ones came out.
is there anything right now i should be aware of?

N900 does not have CM support as of yet. Do not try any of those ROMs. You are restricted to only the Exynos Android Development forums as of now.
dang that sucks. from looking over in the Exynos Development section, i don't see any AOSP-based ROMs. (just TW-based)
so AOKP, PA, and Liquid Smooth don't have any ROMs for the N900?
and so is there any need to know info on bootloaders?

There is a bootloader that can reset your KNOX, but that's it. Check out the KNOX thread in Galaxy Note 3 Developer Discussion.

Tested Guides - Root, Unlock Bootloader and Tethered TWRP On ZE500CL

Hello there!
I've noticed the resources for us using the ZE500CL variant of the ZenFone 2 line of phones are few and far between, so I decided to make this list of methods I personally tested for rooting, unlocking the bootloader and temporarily flashing TWRP (tethered recovery).
I apologize in advance if I'm breaking any forum rules, but I'll make sure to credit everyone who's guides and files I'll be presenting here. I am only posting this to help fellow ZE500CL owners in finding all the necessary tools and methods for various things they need. None of the tools and guides below are my work, all credit goes to their original creators.
I'll update this when I test more things, so keep an eye on this post in the future
NEW: Untethered (permanent) TWRP! You can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/general/guide-twrp-2-8-7-0-custom-recovery-t3328155
Root
Both methods worked for me, but I'd still recommend the second method in combination with temporary (tethered) TWRP in the last guide. Credit: @Chinaphonearena
Guide:

Unlock Bootloader
Please note: Only do this is you're absolutely sure you know what you're doing. Your warranty will be void and you will not receive further OTA updates. There are also NO CUSTOM ROMS for this phone. I am not responsible for damage to your device.
So, we've finally officially got the Bootloader Unlock tool from ASUS. It was uploaded in the "Driver & Tools" section on the ASUS ZenFone 2 ZE500CL official page just yesterday (I've checked it two days ago, it wasn't there, so it was most likely yesterday). I've got the information from this ZenFone 2 ZE500CL ZenTalk Forum post. I tried it, and it worked perfectly!
You can download it from here:
ZenFone 2 (ZE500CL) - Support
Temporary (Tethered) TWRP
This works like a charm tethered, but I didn't try flashing it. When I find one that works, I'll update this post with new information. If any of you find one before me, please notify me This one was, after all, not built specifically for the ZE500CL. Credit: @TheSSJ

Xposed Framework
I've attempted this one, and it worked. Use the tethered TWRP to flash, and be sure your phone is rooted and has BusyBox installed. Credit: @ansebovi
Guide:

I hope this was helpful. Again, the only intention of this post was to help out fellow ZE500CL users, since it's hard to find necessary tools for this device.
Thanks to all the wonderful people of XDA for working on the projects and helping out in the forums!

Custom ROM's and CWM recovery for SM-S820L?

I have been into modding my SM-S820L for a few months now and although I have found an unofficial TWRP release and a few stock ROM's from various sources, I have never seen any type of CyannogenMod ROM or other custom ROM for this phone.
Also I have been wondering about compatibility between some of the other Samsung Galaxy Core Prime models or similar Samsung phone in general. Would it be plausible that a ROM for say SM-G360T would run on an SM-S820L????
I would love it if anyone knows about compatibility between the SM-S820L and other Samsung Galaxy phone's firmware and custom recovery releases and is willing to share the knowledge would post here with some advice.:good:
Sm s820l
I'm in the same boat as you, there's just not much out there, a new rom was posted on area51 but it wasn't much different, just got rid of bloatware as far as I could tell. I look at it like it's a cheap phone, and as far as custom roms and such, it's just not popular or not favored. I've spent hours searching, nothing out there but malicious websites lol. I'll keep you in mind if I come across something.
Head over to NEEDROM. I built a modified ROM from the Stock firmware for the SM-S820L.
Here is my post!!!
CM, PAC, etc, ROMs for other variants of the Core Prime definitely aren't compatible with the 820L variant? Nothing available but stock-based ROMs?
As far as I have found on the Net, and I have searched for countless hours, I havent found any truly custom ROMs from CM or any other ROM makers. All of my modded ROMs and Kernels are just modified stock files. I havent heard of the other SM- variants being compatible with the SM-S820L but if you ever do find info that certain ROMs work with this model, please post here or shoot me a PM.
I would be uber happy to finally flash something like a Cyanogen Mod ROM

An acquaintance of mine just got a Core Prime, so I was looking for info to root and ROM his phone. If you, someone who's actively been looking for the info hasn't found anything yet, it's pretty unlikely that I will. Looks like he just had the crummy luck of ending up with the variant that doesn't have much dev support. Thanks for the reply, though. People over in the SPH-L720 section don't tend to be nearly so helpful.

Is his Core Prime model SM-S820L? If so, I remember using Kingroot to root and then SuperSu Me to remove Kingroot and retain root. You can find SuperSu Me in the Aptoide app store.
After I rooted my phone, I installed TWRP with ODIN3. You do need to have the Samsung Drivers setup and Kies3 installed to have all needed drivers in order to use ODIN3 in your phone's download(ODIN) mode.

Changing the ROM where to start?

My guarantee on my phone has run out. I have a Galaxy S10+ exynos with one ui 4.1. Where can I start to change the rom and root my phone? Can you recommend me an up to date and safe guide?
Google could have done all of this for you.

Do you know how many results you will get if you ask google? Not all of them will be valid or up-to-date and it's hard to pick one.
I really don't understand what you're saying. I rooted my first phone thanks to articles on google. They usually don't even have to be up to date. Plus your phone is relavitely new compared to what I had.
Anyways, first look for a guide to unlock your bootloader, that's the first step.
Next, learn how to flash twrp onto your device.
Lastly learn how to flash custom roms onto your device via twrp. Custom roms can be found in your device's dev forum here on xda.
You'll need a pc, the right drivers, minimal adb and fastboot (or odin), and the required files (twrp, custom rom, gapps)
Also, you've posted this into the wrong subforum. This subforum is for rom development, it's where devs post roms. If you want to ask a question or need help then ask in the Q/A subforum.
