Over the last eight months I have been afraid to root my phone, but finally manned up and rooted and went with cm6
So my question is this...what are some must have apps for me to get the ultimate performance out of my phone? Any specific launchers, battery apps etc...

In my experience, using applications and mods don't work well for me and don't seem to ever have a positive effect on my phone for performance/battery.
One thing I will tell you NOT to do, and it is a common thing, is use a Task Killer. They don't help improve battery life as some say. It's actually argued that it makes it worse.
You can try turning JIT on, and if it's stable for you, then that is supposed to help performance.
(Settings > CM Settings > Performance > Enable JIT) Requires reboot.
A must have is collins_ph battery tweak, getting ridiculous battery life with his tweak (100 or so hours)
Few of my favorites, chrome to phone, voice actions and adb wireless
I do use task killer but autokill is off, I use it when an app freezes
+ 1 on chrome to phone and voice actions. And it's not froyo our even root specific, but awesome drop is a must have as well, I think anyways. Also, I couldn't live without swype or google voice.

+1 Though I'm not a big poster on these forums, I read constantly everyday and am ALWAYS tinkering with different roms,kernels,settings,etc. First and foremost, are you using CM6 or CM6 RC1? I would suggest RC1 if your not already on it. I have been on and off the task killer bandwagon but currently don't use any kind of task management. I don't feel its necessary on froyo and have had good success without it.
Flash google gaaps if you dont have them already if you need gmail and such.
My must haves are ROM Manager, Wireless tether, Beautiful widgets, Chrome to phone, Handcent and as for a browser I use Xscope. X scope is nice cause it has a decent file manager built in, a task manager,(Which I dont use) Download-able themes and a bunch of other goodies as well. OH And I cant forget doodle jump! LOL!
I also am using the Decad3nce V8 kernel but unless you know what your doing I would stay with the stock kernel.
Some have had luck with collins battery tweek, although I have not, (Probably cause I'm not smart enough to set it up! LOL!)
I have used Jit on and Jit off but I haven't really seen much of a difference. I don't think we really have the hardware to make good use of Jit. Although I have google ****s Im kind of a minimalist when it comes to my Hero so I dont like to add too much crap on it!

chrome to phone is awesome. I use it all the time to send directions to my phone for navigation. Although I haven't used it lately AppBrain is very useful. I don't like ADW Launcher, so I have Launcher Pro Plus,I also installed Beautiful Widgets and Extended Controls which make my homescreen look good. If you can find the apk for fancy widget it also replicates the HTC weather clock, but is no longer in the market.

Send web pages, links, text, directions to your phone from your computer - comes in handy when you don't use adb like me and you can send threads of whatever you are wanting to download... or if you're reading something before work and have to go you can send the link to your phone, etc...

Launcher Pro Plus is definitely a must have for me. Although it's a paid app it's definitely worth the few dollars to buy it. The only pro's to the paid version are the sense-like widgets but it's worth it to support the dev.

Just thought I’d put a short guide together on what I think are some things to do to get the most out of your spanking new LG G3 when you get it or you already have it. Most of you guys might already know most of this or might not. Just thought it might help some people. This ain’t rocket science but every little bit helps!
Battery:
This is the hardest thing to do because like a fingerprint everyone has a different set up with apps and how they use their phone (wifi vs 3g vs 4g etc) that screen on time will always vary. Also you don’t want to turn everything off and cripple your brand new smartphone just for your battery. There’s a balance.
However here are some general things to do that do help:
1. Install Greenify from the Playstore. I have found this is the number one way to stop drainage. This app will hibernate apps when not in use. It doesn’t stop their functionality at all but hibernates them.
2. Don’t use Google Now. I think it’s a gimmick and does bugger all for me however if you use it it will drain your battery big time. Of course if you love it then use it!
3. Don’t use location services. Another big drainer. Just use it when you need it. However if you have apps that need it then of course leave it on!
4. Use ‘auto’ on screen brightness. Mine is on ‘auto’ but at 100% and the brightness is perfectly ok for me.
5. If you continue to get big drainage then download Betterbatterystats from the Playstore and look at the ‘wakelocks’ – this way you will be able to see what’s draining your battery. As a general rule your phone should go into deep sleep for at least 80% of the time.
With this phone I am getting around 5 to 5.5 hours Screen on Time. You should be getting around that too.
Performance:
Here are a few things only that really do help with speed and performance:
1. The whole thermal throttling thing is a pain i.e. LG’s decision to turn down brightness when it gets hot. However there is something you can do and which I have now done for two weeks with no adverse problems. Turn it off! Put this in the phone app: 3845#*400# and then scroll down to 'high temperature property' and switch to enable and do the same for 'thermal daemon mitigation'. Please note my model is ‘400’ so this will work in the number sequence above. For models with other numbers I am pretty sure you just substitute and put that number in e.g. 855.
2. Go to Dev Options and change the transition animation scale, the animator duration scale and the window animation scale to 0.5. This little thing speeds up your phone like nothing else.
3. Root your phone with towelroot. One click root! And then start debloating. Get rid of whatever you want by downloading Titanium Backup and going into each app and freezing whatever you want. Freezing is safer than uninstalling but does the same thing. Debloating is a must!
4. So once rooted then start using xPosed modules by downloading and installing the xPosed framework and then rebooting.

a. Download the brilliant xPosed module ‘TweaksBox’ by P_Toti located at:

And donate something to him! This allows you to change so much with this phone. I dunno where to start. It is superb.
b. I dislike the LG skin so immediately download the Google launcher – to me it is the fastest launcher out there beating Nova and Apex. This launcher cannot be customised however there is a fantastic xPosed module that allows you to customise everything - Xposed Gel settings located here:

Ha yes someone's got to donate! They do so much and get so little.
Yes the only reason I said bbs is because I'm used to it. Gsam does the same thing essentially.
Yes from what I read towelroot should work.
Greenify hibernates an app in the background if you are not using it whilst freezing apps effectively uninstalls them without the pain of then being actually uninstalled. And you can unfreeze them any time.

If you turn off the "Ok Google" listener you will save most off the battery drainage, I find Google Now pretty handy.

Is there any danger turning off the thermal thingy. Could the phone completely overheat?
I'll just confirm for anyone wondering that indeed the turning off the thermal throttling does work by changing the device model number to "855" on the UK version
No adverse effects in last half hour or so and have been trying to run demanding tasks to see how it go's
You can uninstall all of the bloat without any issues. It also helps with your battery life. I usual get 4 hours of screen time post charge. That's more than most people can get on a stock kernel, and it's great for a 2k display.

Go to settings, General, About phone, Software information and tap on the build number 7 times. Then go back to General, scroll down and you'll see Developer options.

Greenify is still useful if you want to kill background services, Samsung's built-in feature doesn't do that.
Package disablers are still useful for disabling packages that cause wakelocks or have background services consuming RAM even if you never ever use them.
I dont even use Touchwiz. This post has no actual facts or logic behind it. Battery optimizer still works fine, battery useage is far better. I have about 80 packages disabled.

I had Redmi 3S which battery was 4000 mAh. Totally unbloated, custom rom, no facebook, snapchats, twitters etc., and thanks to HD only screen 10h SoT was the highest I got.
Now you're telling me that S8 which battery is 1000 mAh less capacity perform better than Redmi 3s?

I just did the whole procedure, had to use some ADB command from my PC as well according to the APP, but it works well!
I am using an package disabler (231 packages) and no greenify. Though i have been using greenify for years, in my S7 and S8 i had a worse battery with it.

I am a 26 year old man but I act like a 10 year old child. I am really pathetic and have no life, so I just troll xda. Pray for me. The awesome mods ban my accounts as fast as I create them but I feel like a hero by creating more. I am dying of butthurt disorder but I'll continue to keep my head up because I am sad inside.
I really do apologize for being so silly. I just can't move on. I'm always going to be sad because I broke xda rules and had my account banned. I can't accept that I should just grow up and move on, so I just continue to exceed at being immature and ridiculous.
Don't worry though, while I might sneak a post or two in before mods catch me, they will ALWAYS catch me and ban me. Because xda mods are the best! Especially @The Merovingian

Just wanted to take a minute and start a small discussion with you about stuff that only works with root. Maybe you feel the same.
As an Android user from day 1, I always enjoyed the general "openness" of Android compared to other mobile OSs and used to frequently try out new custom ROMs, play with all the system UI tuner options and obviously got used to having a decent adblocker.
But ever since I got a Pixel XL, I was honestly surprised by the relatively small amount of ROMs and general lack of development on XDA regarding the Pixel phones. At least compared to previous phones I owned, with the exception of the Blackberry Classic maybe...
(Obviously I don't want to discredit the folks that ARE working on these devices. You're awesome and your work is very appreciated!)
Right now, I only use root for AdAway, Nova Launcher (for turning off the screen and locking it with a double tap) and Ex Kernel Manager (even though I never used it or changed any of the settings).
So what I really want to talk about is, what do you use root for? Or why did you unlock your bootloader? Is there something I'm missing?

I will always run an unlocked bootloader. It's a security safety net. If my phone bricks, I have the option to flash factory images. I can always return to stock if something goes wrong.

Root privileged apps- adaway, titanium backup, modded YouTube, modded Spotify, SD Maid, Substratum and a few others.
Also, custom kernel with customized color profile for a more vibrant display.
I also enjoy themeing my own device so having root is necessary for me.
I also need to root, well, BECAUSE ANDROID

U don't need root for substratum on my 8.1 and use Andromeda add on for rootless substratum
I feel like going back to nougat and root for Xposed though...

If you ask me:
Not a fan of TB (restoring often causes problems)
or SD Maid (some cache is important and shouldn't be deleted - except for uninstalled apps),
Substratum is way too buggy for me (at least I can't seem to find a theme without bugs)
and I probably shouldn't ask about those modded apps on here, even though they sound interesting. I guess I'll have to Google that. :laugh:
After looking through Ex Kernel Manager, I can't seem to find anything that I'd want to use or fiddle with. The phone is fast enough, so no overclock. The colors are fine, so no tuning needed. And all the other stuff looks dangerous...
Where are all the awesome system UI options though? I'd love to have my clock in the center of the status bar and display battery percentage INSTEAD of the icon. I know that those are usually coded into custom ROMs but there are no 8.1 ROMs...
Oh, how I'd love to see an 8.1 DU ROM working flawlessly...
Edit: Why go back to Nougat and why use Xposed? I don't get what the big deal is about Xposed nowadays. I used it a few years ago but only because of one or two add-ons, if I recall that correctly.
I have center clock on 8.1 using a Substratum theme.
Also, you can choose to select battery percentage next to the battery icon in 8.1 battery settings.
Once source code gets released for 8.1, the SystemUI can be deodexed which will allow for 3minit battery mod to work. I believe 3minit requires root.
Reasons are getting thin aren't they. AdAway, TB, and Tasker (HBM and single tap sleep(without device admin permission thus required pin)). TB makes life easier but not a necessity. Different device wouldn't need HBM most likely. So basically it comes down to AdAway which I'm pretty sure I'd go nuts without.
TB, Tasker, lucky patcher, greenify, acr (automatic call recorder), ad away. And generally being able to mess with things.

I'm down to one reason and I found out about it a few months back actually. Without it I probably wouldn't bother.
Assertive display - visibility outdoors in the freaking sun with sunglasses on? Heck yeah! The most annoying part is that it just takes two lines added to the build.prop file. If I could do this without root I sure as hell would.

This basically proves my point though in my opinion. Having a rooted Android device used to be such an open playground for fun stuff and now it's mostly just about adblockers and minor tweaks apart from a few apps that still take advantage of it like Tasker and TB.
At least the phones nowadays are fast as hell and have insane cameras. I just wish it would be more sci-fi-y if you know what I mean. Phones aren't just gadgets anymore, they're expensive pieces of hardware that seem to improve upon basic things that we could do for years.
Android updates used to have lots of cool new features with every new version number that was released and now they just seem to improve upon what they can already do and sometimes take features away or even lock them to specific phones (looking at the guy who thought it was a great idea to make stuff like "motion pictures" a feature only on Pixel 2 devices even though our device had the feature available for a day).
Guess I'll take this opportunity to spend less time messing around with tons of options and just be thankful for what they can do now. Like playing stupid gambling-like games with ps1-graphics on a device with a quad-core and 4GB of RAM. :laugh:

You are right! I was also using root just for the 3 reasons you specified! Adaway is the biggest reason. There are other solutions, but nothing that reliable. And next biggest is Ex Kernel Manager to set up double tap to wake without lockscreen.
As for the motion photos, you still can get it. You need to download that version of Google Camera APK and disable updates. I am using it and it looks good. But it works only in Google Photos App. So not that useful as well!

My quick reasons for bootloader unlocking and rooting mirror many of the others here:
1) Ability to flash factory images in a recovery situation.
2) Titanium Backup - although I haven't had to actually use this to recover anything other than a specific app or 2 in the past few years.
3) Adaway
4) Ability to modify build.prop to leverage native hotspot/tethering (Verizon GUDP)
I am interested in learning more about Assertive Display and the differences between it and Adaptive Brightness. My understanding is that Assertive Display works separately from Adaptive Brightness and actually adjusts the tone/color/contrast of individual display pixels to optimize viewing in bright sunlight. When I first enabled this I left my brightness at the same 50% level with the auto brightness left on. It works really well in conjunction with the normal brightness level settings. Maybe turning the brightness down could yeild better battery results but I was never one to complain by the Pixel XL's battery life.
This video from Android Authority here explains it well. I actually randomly got to the video at around midnight on YouTube a few months back. Phone wasn't rooted so I did root it in the middle of the night and followed this topic from the XDA forums to change the build.prop file. Applied the changes, rebooted phone and... Realized I have no real way to test it. Went to my kitchen's aspirator and switched the lights on, brought the phone under there super close at a very steep angle and I could still see it perfectly fine.
TL;DR - this is a great addition to the already standard brightness levels, works like magic, and hey, you can always revert if you end up not liking it.

You're welcome! One thing I forgot to mention - don't bother with the flashable ZIP. It's more work than editing the build.prop file and it actually doesn't work on 8 and up. 7.1.2 was OK with it but I noticed it wasn't quite right on 8 when I tried to flash it even though it said it flashed with no errors.

Thanks! I actually did disable auto update once I had it and still have the APK. Don't know if it works after a fresh install of 8.1 though. I guess I'll try later. Google's Motion Stills as an alternative just feels weird to me.
I think it's a neat feature though. Sometimes it really helps bring a moment back to life, more than a still picture would. Especially when it's snowing or raining.
That new AR stickers thing is also funny but it needs better content IMO. Two of the packs are basically ads for the StarWars movies and Stranger Things.

Samsung has made these steps complicated so that only the most enthusiastic people would want to try rooting.
Android manufacturers are starting to follow the footsteps of Apple. They are also not wanting people to mess with their devices. Huawei has also stopped providing unlock codes for their smartphones.

you can customize this device 100% and also block all those bloatwares without rooting.. so think again

well, im a user who used to root every single samsung device. but i never root my s10. i managed to block ALL my ads using adguard. Why would i need Titanium backup when i can use package disabler and do the same thing (oh and by the way i still have a Pro titanium key and i love that app). i dont see a big difference between disabling bloatwares and uninstalling them. as long as they are not coming up im ok with that.
Try and search the disadvantages of rooting. Last time yes, you need to root your device to customize but now without root you can use your phone with all those so called unlocked features. just FYI my battery last for 26hours+ with 7-8 hours SOT.

In addition, there are certain levels of customization which can only be optained through rooting ex.. 3minit battery, etc... .And while your may get great battery life, it could be even better if you could tweak your kernel with FK Kernel manager. Yes, I agree root is less of a necessity today than it was years ago. However, for some, it is essential and a choice they don't wish to relinquish to OEMs. Yes, there are genuine dangers to rooting. But it is a choice each individual should make for themselves, not one made by the OEM. Just, my 2 cents.

wouldn't root a phone when using samsung pay and pass.
used to do titanium backup and remove unused apps but when system update comes, i couldn't restore them to original condition and thus no way to update.
not taking the flash update route.

I do know Adguard is not a Systemwide blocker. But it does a very good job blocking ads which is exactly what i want. To me the end result is what matters.
Do you think only titanium can backup your apps data? there are so many apps which can do this without rooting your phone. And im surprised you're talking about your phone space. You do know that s10+ is a high end phone which has a 128GB inbuilt and can extend that to another 512 GB if im not mistaken right? system apps/bloatwares wont even take a GB of your phones space.

I do not wish to make it even better. because i've already tweaked this to the max and whats the point tweaking some more? when you have a powerful phone. Also only a small % of people do these kind of kernel changes.

But really now a days rooting a powerful device doesnt make any sense at all - at least to an average user. im really enjoying my s10+ with nova launcher+good look customization+KWGT widgets+package disabler+adguard. It's almost like a rooted device for me now
some additional features are just a step away without rooting. simply setup adb on your pc, connect your phone with usb debugging and send some adb commands to allow WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS, CHANGE_CONFIGURATION, DUMP, depending on the app requirements.
for my use case, i had tasker and secure settings app.
on landscape orientation, it would automatically change input method to minuum (low profile keyboard). used to be using multiling though.

To my knowledge, Titanium IS the best and only app thst can backup APK content fully, quickly and effectively. If you knows if another app that can backup APK data without root effectively please share. I would love to try it. There are thousands of apps that will backup you APKs, but none will backup their data. I have tried too many to only be disappointed at the end. If Google was able to do this effectively, I would surely stop rooting phones.
Not everyone needs a Terrabyte of capacity in their phone. It's a phone, for God's sake. I keep tens of thousands of pics and videos on mine, and still have plenty of room left; and because it's a Pixel, they are also saved in their original resolution on the cloud and are synced and available on any and all devices I log into. I also have over 230 apps installed and have plenty of room left. I won't argue that it's nicer to have more space than not, but IMO, it's not necessary for most people. It's mostly a strategy to keep getting people to buy a newer model with more this or that. Sure, a Pentabyte of space would be even better to have but I will never need it on my phones.
BTW never met anyone before who said they "didn't have a need for a better battery life on their phone". Given a chance, I think most people would tweak it to improve it.You must be pretty lucky with your phone. I've already seen forums about the battery life on the S10+ and how to make it better. The one one battery optimization is already 35 pages long! Either you are a light user, or you got very lucky with your phone.

To your very own knowledge you say Titanium is the best, ok fine. thats perfectly fine. Because there was this one time i was so obsessed with Titanium and that app was the 1st app i will ever install soon after rooting my device.
Reg backing up data, i do agree, that is a challenge. without rooting its difficult, but its NOT impossible. i transferred all my s9+ apps/data to s10+ without any issues. You know how? nowadays 90% apps have inbuilt backup solution. So you can easily backup your data to cloud etc. That way you can restore them without any issue. The only app data i had to redo - Duo security.
Yes, I do agree, no one ever need terabyte of capacity. I only have 256GB and I also have thousands of photos/videos. Why do you need to save tens of thousands of pics and videos in your mobile? it's a phone, for gods sake. You do know that you can backup to cloud and remove those photos. That way you can save space. So if you have enough space, why you're bothered about "disabled" apps vs uninstalled apps?

S10+ is a very very powerful phone with a very good battery capacity/hardware etc. I'm not a light user. People having issues with s10+ battery coz they dunno how to tweak their device. Just because there are 1001 tips to save battery, its not necessary to do them all. For example, people say reduce brightness, reduce the resolution, screen type etc. Whats the point doing all those things when you own a powerful, expensive phone? You MUST use some of those nice features without thinking much about battery usage. That's why i said I'm against doing every single things to save even 0.1% battery. I will only do reasonable tweaks and if my phone can give me 24hr + battery life then im more than happy.
Do you know that a lot of people dont use android Facebook app coz they all think it will drain the battery etc? i know that, but im still using FB, instagram etc etc. May be like you said you've never met a person who said i tweaked enough. But I've met them
I really respect all XDA devs. I still have 2 S7 devices with CF root + titanium backup etc etc. So its not that i dont like rooting. What im trying to tell you is, its not necessary to root. If you weigh the advantages / disadvantages, I only can see very few disadvantages.
You have no idea how many power hungry apps I have. I just know how to tweak them, block background access, block data access, use proper firewall etc. etc.
I'm not gonna argue with you whether rooting is good or not. Coz like i said, you have a fixed mindset that rooting is the only way. For that only im replying telling thats not the only way. Anyways, I have nothing against you. You root your device or dont root your device that got nothing to do with me. I'm just sharing that by rooting you gonna loose quite a lot of good features/apps + warranty. Last time we all had to take that risk (including me) because we literally had no choice. Now it's not like that.
