[Q] Rooted CM6 Must Haves

Over the last eight months I have been afraid to root my phone, but finally manned up and rooted and went with cm6
So my question is this...what are some must have apps for me to get the ultimate performance out of my phone? Any specific launchers, battery apps etc...

In my experience, using applications and mods don't work well for me and don't seem to ever have a positive effect on my phone for performance/battery.
One thing I will tell you NOT to do, and it is a common thing, is use a Task Killer. They don't help improve battery life as some say. It's actually argued that it makes it worse.
You can try turning JIT on, and if it's stable for you, then that is supposed to help performance.
(Settings > CM Settings > Performance > Enable JIT) Requires reboot.

A must have is collins_ph battery tweak, getting ridiculous battery life with his tweak (100 or so hours)
Few of my favorites, chrome to phone, voice actions and adb wireless
I do use task killer but autokill is off, I use it when an app freezes

+ 1 on chrome to phone and voice actions. And it's not froyo our even root specific, but awesome drop is a must have as well, I think anyways. Also, I couldn't live without swype or google voice.

+1 Though I'm not a big poster on these forums, I read constantly everyday and am ALWAYS tinkering with different roms,kernels,settings,etc. First and foremost, are you using CM6 or CM6 RC1? I would suggest RC1 if your not already on it. I have been on and off the task killer bandwagon but currently don't use any kind of task management. I don't feel its necessary on froyo and have had good success without it.
Flash google gaaps if you dont have them already if you need gmail and such.
My must haves are ROM Manager, Wireless tether, Beautiful widgets, Chrome to phone, Handcent and as for a browser I use Xscope. X scope is nice cause it has a decent file manager built in, a task manager,(Which I dont use) Download-able themes and a bunch of other goodies as well. OH And I cant forget doodle jump! LOL!
I also am using the Decad3nce V8 kernel but unless you know what your doing I would stay with the stock kernel.
Some have had luck with collins battery tweek, although I have not, (Probably cause I'm not smart enough to set it up! LOL!)
I have used Jit on and Jit off but I haven't really seen much of a difference. I don't think we really have the hardware to make good use of Jit. Although I have google ****s Im kind of a minimalist when it comes to my Hero so I dont like to add too much crap on it!

chrome to phone is awesome. I use it all the time to send directions to my phone for navigation. Although I haven't used it lately AppBrain is very useful. I don't like ADW Launcher, so I have Launcher Pro Plus,I also installed Beautiful Widgets and Extended Controls which make my homescreen look good. If you can find the apk for fancy widget it also replicates the HTC weather clock, but is no longer in the market.

Send web pages, links, text, directions to your phone from your computer - comes in handy when you don't use adb like me and you can send threads of whatever you are wanting to download... or if you're reading something before work and have to go you can send the link to your phone, etc...

Launcher Pro Plus is definitely a must have for me. Although it's a paid app it's definitely worth the few dollars to buy it. The only pro's to the paid version are the sense-like widgets but it's worth it to support the dev.

I tried downloading the apk's for swype buy it seems like I don't have the swype keyboard .... any help would be excellent

Did you enable it via Language and Keyboards under Settings?

WidgetLocker

Have anyone tried WidgetLocker? What are your impressions on it? I've read is kinda slow on some phone, but what about on the Epic?

I purchased it shortly after I got my Epic, and after using a warez version for a while. It's pretty great, and isn't slow. It's not 100% seamless, but it's close enough to where you won't notice. The ability to hide the notification bar is great for privacy, its sliders are better than stock, and of course the ability to add widgets is nice. I'd take a screenshot, if I still had it set up (I haven't since I became a ROM developer ).

I also would like to say it is a very nice program and it is not slow runs great, I like the way you can have custom unlock open program sliders for fast access.

I read somebody saying that widgetlocker increased his battery use and therefore was good but gave him trouble because of short battery life. It could be a single case or it could be a issue. What is you guys experience who used it?? Did you notice any increased battery drain??

I love widgetlocker! Total +1 for me. It cause a little slowdown back on my 528 mhz cliq, but even on that horrible phone it wasnt that bad. On the epic I agree its 99% flawless. If you go through the list of settings after buying it and set it up to your own personal specs, it dosen't use all that much battery.
As for the battery issue, Widgetlocker does cause a service to run all the time that it is enabled, but to be honest after looking at battery stats it dosen't use a whole lot over the course of a normal day. Especially not enough to be a dealbreaker unless your a total minimalist/battery nazi. The guy mentioned above probably have tons of other issues with his phone causing battery life to be ****ty IMO.
I recommend people set the "Root Bypass of 5 second rule" in the advanced options menu, then you dont have to run the icon in the notification bar all the time, nor do you have to use widgetlockers "homehelper" (If you never used it and have no idea what i'm talking about, no worries, just do this if you try it lol)
Other than that though it's great. Have had it on my Epic since day 1 when I installed my apps back. Always worked great. Updates have added some newer looks also. Tons of possibilities. Love love it.

Question for you guys I used it for awhile but even with the 5 sec root bypass it still took about 2-3 seconds for the lock to appear after waking my phone. You guys come across this?

i use it and i havent had that problem. also if you want to theme your slider, there is a thread in the android theme section on how to do it.

Screen Wobble/Battery Consumption (Xperia Play User Comparison)

Hi Yall
Ive had the xperia play for around 2 weeks now and loving it but seeing as im pretty particular about my new gadgets im just wondering if my xperia play is the same as everyone elses.
Ive basically got only a couple queries which are:
1. How is your screen wobble when the slider is opened and closed?
With mine, when the slider is closed there is a slight gap between the gamepad and the screen so when you use the touch screen (for smsing etc) you can here the tapping of the screen on the gamepad.
When the slider is open on the other hand the same thing happens but only on the bottom 2 corners of the screen you can push them slightly down onto the gamepad with slight movement.
2. How is your battery usage/life?
With mine, I basically get 1 or 1.5 days battery life depending on what I am doing but I cant help notice that even with little things such as sending a quick sms or simply going through the phones settings will actually eat 1% or 2% of the battery life. This normal?
Lastly, im new to android as I have recently switched from the iphone so when im looking at the stock android app killer thats built into the device under the applications section. What is actually using the battery? As you go the the running apps part its got used and free application that show up. are both of these eating the battery or is it just the used ones?

Anyway, Markus (developer I think) from Sony Ericsson confirmed the "LITTLE" wobble and small gap when closed is normal. That is in accordance to their design engineers' wants to allow users to have a good feel when using the gaming device. As with any side-slider phones, THIS IS NORMAL.
Regarding the battery, that is just fine. You are actually getting the juice out of it. Period. I had mine rooted and bloatware removed, but the difference in battery consumption against non-rooted didn't vary a lot. So I reverted back to NO BLOATWARE REMOVED (but still rooted though) to preserve my ability to update via OTA in the future and it's working just fine. I believe the phone is managing itself very well so there's no need for us to be doing a lot of tweaks that could be potentially dangerous. And oh, I believe you're already on 2.3.3 because on 2.3.2 the battery won't even last a day. Mine lasts a maximum of 35 hours on 2.3.3 with moderate use, 4-5 hours on straight gaming.
EDIT: Never use third-party App Killers/Task Managers! I read somewhere legit that they will just screw up your phone. Android phones are way better off with spiking memory usages because that's the time when the phone starts to manage itself actually. Remember, devs and engineers will never release a device that cannot manage itself. Love your device! Love it even more if it's in stock condition!

If you want speed, memory and more battery then do this
Batteryurchase juice defender ultimate, it's absolutely wonderful and ACTUALLY works. With root it saved me x1.50 on battery, without root it saved me x2. 0
Install memory booster, qwik boost and task killer will free up RAM and stop battery consumption for a few minutes.
Speed: unlocking bootloader and then rooting, installing titanium backup and removing bloatware, uninstalling useless apps and freezing will make it noticibly fast. You can also use. SETCPU for extended battery and faster performance. And SD speed increase
For more speed and precision , flash doomkernel
That will catapult your battery to 10 hours, and will get you to another day.

There really is no need to install these, they do more harm than good, its explained loads on XDA.

It is normal for the Play to have a slight wobble!
If you really want to inprove it you can use two of those little sticky pad things from the bottom of a mouse (no, not a real mouse, a pc mouse!), place them on the back of the Play while the screen is up, it stops it wobbling, there is a thread about it somewhere on here.

like i said in my post, that is normal. why fix something that is normal?

i wrote it wrong.Memory boosters features include ;Qwick Boost and Kill Running apps.ITs all in 1 APP. And it checks your free memory.

Either way anything that kills apps is bad. I used to do it religiously on my old Droid, and then I read that article and said hey lets just give it a shot. Well it took a while (like a couple days) for the phone to catch up but it actually started to run BETTER and less stuff was crashing and force closing.
I still have Advanced task killer on my phone, but I use it for one thing only, to kill apps that screw up but don't Force Close (generally Facebook because that app is a piece of ****e....)

there's an article (legit one) i read somewhere saying app killers and advanced task managers plus battery calibration apps are actually dangerous to android phones. after all, android does memory spooling, so it manages its RAM on its own and we don't want to mess with that. as i always say, why intervene with something that's working properly? engineers made their phones act properly without / minimal management, so why bother?

Screen wobble is barely noticeable, battery life is amazing.

There is quite a good aricle on lifehacker that says all about the native memory management and why task killers are useless

Yes tasks managers are quite useless for Android.In fact, it is known to screw up some programs or functions because of closing the wrong programs.That being said i'm using the one that came with go launcher.

When i was using GO launcher, i had a nasty habbit of using the one in the app draw every time i opened it

You can stick a teflon mouse skate at the back of the screen just behind the home button. It won't completely eliminate wobble but it makes it a lot more stable when pressing any of the face buttons or texting.

When a task killer kills apps, most of them just restart. If you want it to be truly effective, you need to have root, titanium pro, and freeze them.
Plus, task killers use extra CPU and ram, resulting in more power being used. They just keep killing apps repeatedly and eat your battery.

Tips to remove lag

Hello, I have LG G3 for two months, it was an upgrade from my LG NEXUS 5. I really like the Design, camera and battery on my G3, but the performance was always poor. I did upgrade it over OTA, did a factory reset a few times, rooted to remove MacAfee. Now I even reinstalled software form a file (tutorial on forums). It is still choppy when I scroll web pages, play store is really bad. The launcher was also not smooth at all compared to my Nexus, now I am running Nova launcher it does help a little. Only essentials apps are now installed and I checked running services and remove the apps that have service, but I don't really use. Still feels like cheap dual core phone, far from Nexus 5.

Why does G3 lag so bad when you scroll and how can I fix that?

You can reduce lag on home screen by disabling wallpaper scrolling.

There are threads on this already where you will find what you need. You can make this thing fly very easily.

Proving you wrong is even easier than getting rid of most lag. Disable all animations, set transition scaling in dev options to zero, turn on hardware acceleration, do NOT reduce dpi as some here have advocated. No more complicated than checking a few boxes.

Unfortunately, running the stock rom, you'll never be able to compare it to the nexus 5. Once Cm11 is ready for prime time, it will be a comparable experience

Optimizing a new, stock LG G3

Hey guys, I just upgraded from a crappy old HTC 3D Evo phone, and I never cared much for it due to its buggy software so I never really cared to take care of it or preserve it in any way. I initially picked up a Samsung Galaxy S5, but my friend told me the LG G3 was better and cheaper. Some brief research led me to the same conclusion so I traded in my $650 Samsung S5 for the $600 LG G3. Bigger screen, 50% more memory, 100% more storage - it's a no brainer, isn't it?
Are there any experienced users who would care to share what they'd do to optimize the phone? By optimize, I mean increasing battery life, performance, usability, convenience, and basically anything relating to those categories. I'm considering rooting the phone to get the most out of it. Never rooted a phone before, but I don't find it daunting (especially with all the guides). I just want to get rid of any background bloat, and set up my phone so that it uses the battery minimally unless I'm using it, and I possibly might even want to just run it at 1080P for superior battery life and performance. I've heard of people underclocking the CPU when the screen is turned off and was wondering if that was beneficial or worth doing. I just want my phone to be lean, efficient, and extremely considerate of the battery life. The one thing I actually appreciated about the S5 was the ability to run it in Ultra Power Saver mode which did a great job at running the phone in a lean state when I wasn't actively using it - if I could do anything similar to that, that'd be cool.
Any general tips or personal preferences on how use their phone is appreciated.
(P.S. I posted this here in the General Section instead of Q&A because the Q&A forum seemed to be filled with threads of people having specific problems, while I'm trying to create a thread that could be potentially useful to anyone who just grabbed the phone and wants to know experienced user's opinions on maintaining the optimizing the device)

To tell you the truth I dont think you can get too far without root. So that would be my nmbr 1 advice

Is it okay to root using that 1-touch root program or do you recommend a specific way? I'll be sure to grab Greenify and I just downloaded Nova Launcher. Is Greenify the only battery-related app I should be looking at? I looked around the Play store and many of them seem to be heavy on bloat, useless features, and advertising.

First, go with Stump Root at the LG G3 Original Android Development section.
Second, greenify is great. Use it wisely. There are other good battery saving apps around there, but you should be careful with the fake ones. I'm currently using Unbounce for wakelock optimizing, but there is also wakelock detector which is great.
Third, about the data... well, I used to have a smart radio feature with a custom rom back on the Nexus 4. But I dont think you will find any app to do that easily. For that, you could try Tasker, which is great but not so simple of configure. But the possibilities are endless.

I use green power as an effective battery saving app, as well as greenify, xposed unbounce etc

Awesome recommendations, digging Greenify a lot, and Stump was ridiculously easy to use. I saw someone recommend Deep Sleep Battery Saver in another thread and I've been liking that as well. Next step is I plan to use 1080P tweak in this thread, this CPU thermal throttling mod, and these speed-boost tweaks.
With all of these changes, my G5 should be very speedy compared to stock as well as much more considerate of battery life. When/if LG fixes the sharpening, I might switch back to 1440p.
