Scrolling is not smooth. Anyone else facing this issue? - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

The scrolling is not smooth at all and it is quite jittery and jumpy. It is specially noticable on slow scrolling.
Anyone else having this problem?

Somewhat. But not to a degree that ist bothering me, really.

S i have that issue its annoying while slow scrolling...

I came from an iphone 5s, where almost every scroll was lagging... specially on twitter, reddit...websites etc. anyway, though it does lag a bit when scrolling...i'm pretty happy with this phone. It does no lag any close to my previous phone, so its a win for me.

Yes, it is exactly how you described.

yes. Noticed this issue after last update(sep patch)

Never had that issues,even after got new update, i suspect it from third party apps,make sure you use default launcher/pixel 2 launcher and using stock wallpaper.coz i got lag when using Google pixel 2 live wallpaper,that app still not stable yet for mi a1.
If you don't use any other launcher or live wallpaper but still not smooth try to recall what is the last app or tweaks you did before facing that issue.

What is that for by the way, was it make any difference? What it has to do with the performance and scrolling issue?

Do not believe, at home we have 2 A1, one with ebbg and the other with tianma, no difference in scrolling, blurriness or whatsoever, they perform identically except for the colors. The only thing I noticed that the tianma model freezed 2 times (the ambient display thing), and the ebbg none, but still not convinced it is the panel thet makes the difference.

Well, it is known that the EBBG panel are worst than the Tiamna ones, at least for the color tones.
http://en.miui.com/thread-244923-1-1.html
I have the Tiamna screen and I can notice a little blurryness while scrolling, but nothing so hard.

experiencing the same issue as in the attached video. do you folks have the same?

First thing I do on all my devices is to turn on gpu rendering and turn off hw overlays in dev options.
-------------------------------
When rooted, set the gpu governor to simple_ondemand via kernel adiutor.
In build.prop find the lines and edit:
debug.sf.hw=0 (set it to 1)
debug.egl.hw=0 (set it to1)
For smoother scrolling I added following lines to build.prop:
hw3d.force=1
hw2d.force=1
debug.hwui.render_dirty_regions=false
ro.sf.compbypass.enable=0
debug.compbypass.enable=0
force_hw_ui=true
ro.min_pointer_dur=8
touch.pressure.calibration=amplitude
touch.pressure.source=default
touch.pressure.scale=0.00000000001
ro.scroll.friction=0.00000000001
ro.min_fling_velocity=20000
ro.max_fling_velocity=25000
debug.composition.type=gpu
persist.sys.composition.type=gpu
debug.egl.profiler=1
persist.sys.scrollingcache=4
In addition find /system/lib/egl/egl.cfg and delete:
0 0 android (<- delete this line)
0 1 adreno
Altering these things made the UI more fluid for me, even slow scrolling.

@Berlino, thanks a lot for you attention to the problem. Unfortunately, changes to dev options do not bring any improvement Although I'm not rooted, so not able to check if changes to build.prop make any positive effect.

things you would change about the z1

Just a couple things I would change as overall I'm happy with the phone...
The bezels are huge considering the screen size. I would love a tighter fitting chassis.
I have a 6906 so I would love to be able to unlock the boot loader. The entire root process was very complex compared to every phone I've owned. It is needlessly difficult for a new user.
Viewing angles could be better.
Aside from that I'm very happy with this phone.
What would you change?
Speakers, definitely.
Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk
I would change it for a HTC one m8....
the damned ASF
Z2 is pretty much what I want Z1 to be.......
any way to change the colour of the Font in notification bar, that white on grey looks pretty bad (no root)
I thought there was a theme editor being released, I noticed on the Z2 that the font is blue

Apply screen protectors straight out of the box (front & back high quality made in Japan ones) and then you don't have to worry about the ASF.

Hmmm.. I would change a few things about the phone. But would i add? IR. Definitely.
Software update to z2 features. Z1 would get most of it..but of course...why would Sony do that? It intentional updates the flagship phone every 6 months...less reason for then to update their old ones

actually they tense to do that with lot of the exclusive software side features after the new device is 6 months old. By the time the older devices get them, they also get the newer version. Like background defocus, the whole social camera thing all were released to older device that didn't ship with them.

I would give it some optimization love. The hardware is great, but it's performance is very bad. Ecspecially the ui makes it look like a low end device because of all the lags and stutters. Sad story. :'(

What is your setup then? And tbh, this makes me feel really bad because of me having this device for just a month or something. And even with a clean install of stock firmware it gives problems with that. Meanwhile the benchmarks etc are really good. 34k in antutu is no problem. That's also why i don't understand what's going on.

Oh and it's mainly album, conversations and phonebook/call log which give way too much jank/stutter/lag in my opinion. Apps like chrome and gmail scroll pretty good, just like the ui combined with nova launcher. Almost no lag to be found there.

I'm getting there also, i noticed that an app i used caused quite alot of lag. Noroot firewall. I changed it with Afwall+ and the lag is almost completely gone. I just experience some scroll lag when going through messaging or album, but i guess that's normal and will get less if i eventually get the bootloader unlocked and stuff like doomkernel installed. Until then i'm happy with the snappyness!
Btw, rajeev's black apps combined with aneurysm theme and 120fps timeshift also really help to make me love this phone more.

Scrolling stutter / jitter /lag?

I saw a review on YouTube in which the reviewer mentions that OP5 has some kind of jitter when scrolling compared to the other Snapdragon 835 powered phone, in this case, the HTC U11. I searched the OP3/3T forums and saw that it is an old problem.
Do you happen to notice something familiar on your OP5 when scrolling thru different apps?

Yes it does and to be honest it's annoying, sometimes it's like a shaking jello effect when scrolling and sometimes there's awful jerkiness and stuttering when scrolling through certain web pages in chrome, have to say this should not happen out the box, i hope the scrolling issue gets resolved or I'm sending mine back.
Got the same, sadly. Hope something can be done about it. The hardware is awesome, but the stuttering is very annoying. I'd expect the experience to be smoother... :-\

It's like the refresh rate is set at 45fps for eg instead of 60fps like a flagship should be, there's a jelly shaking effect everywhere you scroll but some apps chrome for eg sometimes hitches and stutters, not acceptable for this kind of hardware tbh.
I've not had an android phone that hasn't stuttered to some extent in Chrome.
I can say though that mine has improved over the day or so since I've had the phone and currently is very smooth.
Does anyone have an example of a website that is more prone to lag? I'll try it out.

Forcing gpu rendering didn't work for me still the same, open the app drawer and scroll up and down fairly fast you'll see a shimmering effect, also even scrolling up and down in these forums sometimes when the square adverts pop it's stutters like ****, it reminds me of having vsync disabled on my pc that kind off effect, it's like OP have disabled vsync because with it enabled it stuttering even worse like it can't keep up to 60fps, which i find really strange with this kind of hardware, it needs to get sorted fairly quickly, it doesn't do this on my huawei mate 9 or my Nexus 6p, also there's touch latency issues, remember hearing carl pei going on about it in the launch on tuesday, saying they've improved latency when in fact they haven't, if you scroll up and down fast sometimes it's not picking up your touches and skips and just scrolls the last way it detected, I'm very suspicious they new about this problem when they were on about touch latency in the launch.

I have no scroll latency or lag on my phone. Everything is buttery smooth. I didn't change any settings.
I used the oneplus 3t for a while and initially I thought the phone was fast and lag free. However I always used to have a strange feeling that all wasn't as great as it seemed. I use talon for twitter a lot and with the oneplus 3t it was hit and miss at times it would be smooth when scrawling and other times it would lag and stutter. I kinda blamed the app and even sent a few messages to the developer of the app (he never replied lol). I decided to move back to my note 7 (yes it's a fire hog but I love it lol),and well well it was way smother and lag free than the 3t. Am sure you can eventually tweak the oneplus do to what you want and improve lags etc but I just never had the time. Saying that I will keep an eye on this thread as I intend to buy it.
Cant say much about the lag since I havent got my phone yet, but could somebody give an idea of me a try? If I remember correctly, there used to be some accessability settings in Android, some installed Apps where enabled there by default and caused jitter/lag for me, back on my Nexus 5. Can someone test if this could be the cause? (if this setting still exists, no Idea on what Android version this happened to me) - Either way, im scared now that I wont be to happy with the device, lets hope there will be a fix soon.

Yes!!! You see it to. I posted this on Reddit. Everyone check this bull**** out:
Noticed this as soon as I setup the phone. I don't think I've ever seen an AMOLED panel do this. It's almost like it's refreshing each line of pixels too slowly/unevenly during a single frame?
Here's an album of images and video captured from 240 FPS video. View them one after another. The screen refreshes by starting in the bottom left corner and finishes the frame in the top right corner... the icons and text on each line of apps goes out of alignment as I scroll.
Text and elements on the screen stretches out when scrolling down, and smushes together when scrolling up. Straight lines look wavy when scrolling left or right as well!

Yes i see it, it's not just me, it's like a it's scrolling under water! The people that can't see it are stubborn to it or don't have the eyesight, it's awful, never seen this problem on any screen in the last 4 years or so, as much as i love the phone i can't put up with one of the main features which you need to navigate your phone, it's shimmering like burning sausage, imo crap.

You must have a golden sample then, one thing is for sure it is NOT buttery smooth, the only place this phone is smooth to my eyes is when side scrolling left and right, the rest is a mess to blunt, there's a guy who did a YouTube vid showing the problem...
Here's another quote from someone in the one plus forums with the same issue.
"Some outlets have reported on a "jello effect" on the OnePlus 5 when scrolling through apps, and I have noticed this myself as well. Right now I just noticed that in horizontally scrolling apps (Snapchat in my case) I get a rolling shutter effect, where the bottom of the screen updates the image faster than the top, amplifying this jello effect. V-Sync of course makes display response time slower, but also ensures that the image never gets cut In half. Can anyone else comment on this? I will try to get it on video whenever I'm home from Copenhagen. It can be quite noticable when you know it and think about it" if vsync has been disabled because they have installed a slow touch response screen or something mines going back.
Ok, I see it too. It's very subtle but there is a stretching compression going on when stopping scrolling.
Doesn't bother me in the slightest but here it is in slow-mo. Most obvious on the final scroll-down at the end of the video.
https://goo.gl/photos/mgD8zT3TAYBxmy3Q6
mine is butter
Mine is too. In fact if I showed you it in person, I don't think you'd see it. It's that subtle and I think you really have to look for it.
Can you see it in the video? It's not the jitter as that is just the result of slowing a video down from 240fps. It's a slight wave as it stops.
If anyone is reading these threads and thinks there's a problem with the OP5 - there's not. We all have the same phones here and some people can't even see the effect that is being described.

I did notice it right away. But I was in an impression that it's an animation. Various ROMs lets you set your render animation. Isnt this just it?

Like or dislike Android Pie

How's people liking Android Pie?
I installed on my stock OG Pixel XL and I think it actually runs faster, or seems to. I turned off the swipe gesture for the home key at first to get used to the rest if the changes. I just turned it back on and I am getting used to that now. All in all I am happy.

OG PIXEL XL, here and one day in, I'm digging it. Hoping for root, Substratum, Dolby Atmos & Gravity Box
Root is already working, just flash magisk 16.7 beta.
I'm rooted and using elemental kernel, so far so good.
The OS itself feels a lot different than N or O, especially when using the pixel launcher.

You're right, about root. I guess I was thinking outside the Pixel realm. It's my backup phone. I could probably live without all the others, but Dolby Atmos. The rest are aesthetics, but I love me some car audio jamming.
I don't, his however love the Pixel and my Moto Z2 Play, probably won't get Pie.

Built AOSP last night is so much faster than the official build Pie is definitely going to be a nice experience
I have a weird issue where the battery icon stays lit up when charging while off. It them doesn't turn off when the phone is unplugged?

Overall, it is fine. Pretty snappy especially considering I updated with the -w removed instead of doing a complete install. I haven't messed much with the new look and feel features since stock O was just fine to me. One bug is that when I click on/dismiss a notification the icon stays there sometimes until I swipe down on the curtain again. The new volume quick access that includes buzz and mute is nice though I don't like that just turning down volume from the main screen now controls media instead of ringer. The only thing I don't care for is the new window animation (app window bouncing open for lack of a better explanation). Seems like a waste of resources with no functional benefit. 2 apps that caused messages that they were designed for an older version of Android, but both worked fine and the message no longer pops up after hitting the OK button the first time you see it. All in all, P was a well though out and largely bug-free update. Clearly, it was extremely stable and ready for a general release that was earlier than any of us where expecting. I haven't seen anyone talking about reverting to O. That is always a good sign.

I stand corrected. I tried it on 8/6 using the regular Substratum app. Updated to Magisk 16.7 beta (not sure if that's important), downloaded Substratum beta v999, and it works. Thanks for proving me wrong y'all! My scorched retinas are forever in your debt.

I have a test build with it but I have not had time to flash it yet. I'll get to it tonight
It's pretty snappy. I'm digging all the little nuances, like the volume popup and the in call bubble that shows on top of other apps.
While using the phone, the clock in the upper left, catches my eye and I think it's a notification.
The nav pill is ok. I have a little trouble switching to previous app.
I signed up for the DIGITAL WELL BEING app. I don't know if it will be very useful, to me, but time will tell.
I do appreciate being able to darken the quick settings tray, but don't understand why notifications are left with white backgrounds.
I don't like having to pull down, twice, to get to settings.
ETA, I found another thing I like, the select text, expanding window and the copy / paste experience.

Notification LED

It would seem the notification LED is not as prominent as I would want it to be. In addition to that; the fact that it is on the top of the phone makes it almost impossible to notice (and in my case i never notice it). Any workarounds besides NotifyBuddy(i tried this. It doesnt allow me to use the fp scanner) and ambient display? The idea is just to have a simple notification LED
You own a mi9t with a notif. LED in top?

I've been myself searching for a solution, it seems the only one is to use an app like this > https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flysoft.panel.edgelighting&hl=en
but unfortunately, during my testing it failed to produce the intended results, it's simply inconsistent, tried other similar apps but I think those were low-quality apps. so currently I'm waiting for a new app or different solu.

Oh, you're right, there is some kind of a lit ring. I hadn't noticed that yet. But that's no notification LED, that's a bad joke
I'm using NotifyBuddy. But it seems to work just sometimes. I did not yet find out why.

Does your fp scanner work when you use notifybuddy?

General lag

My min CPU frequency keeps changing to the max frequency possible and for some reason it dramatically reduces my device's performance. Causes visible lag in general browsing. This used to happen on my OnePlus 3T aswell. What could be the culprit?

Min frequency to the lowest one possible (for all clusters).
What firmware , model are you using? Do you a custom ROM installed?
I've never had a single touch of lag in any app or the OS.
I'm on pure stock 23BA 11
My lag occurs whenever I press the home button from either an app or internet. I have about at least a one second lag. Pure stock phone with latest software update.
Anyone else have this problem?
I only notice lag in Chrome browser on a lot of websites....
YES! So I got a IN2025 in, let is restore all my stuff but didn't switch to it because dual-sim isn't working yet. Had it a week and a half using it while on Wifi at home. I wiped it and sent it back for a refund today. Felt no faster than my OP7P, and if anything felt slower at times. Not worth the 1K price premium at all. And this is coming from a guy who can't stand to keep a phone longer than a year!! . Now what to do with the cases and screen protectors I already bought

Lol what do you mean it felt no faster?
It's a more powerful CPU / GPU by some way.
But in regards to general navigation round the OS? No it's not any faster as the OnePlus 7 is as fast as if can be, there is no more speed to be had?
If that's your attitude to the best phone you can buy now I'm kind of glad you have returned it.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say? I have a OP7P as my DD,and I had a OP8P on hand as well. Both running on Wifi. Was it faster than my OP7P at most things, yes but barely. Not $999 worth of extra speed IMO. Launching the games I play and the apps I use, if I hit the icon at the same time....they both opened almost identically at the same time. Plus the 8P had more "stuttering" and random lag......maybe it was a bad one, not sure, but it seemed to just have lag issues, like the originator of this post stays......

IN2021, everything stock. Tried using custom kernel with no success.
Just flash custom rom
Phone now is super smooth

While that might solve this issue, I won't find anything nearly as good as OOS.
