OTG connectivity - Moto Z Force Questions & Answers

Hi,
Is there any reason why the Z force disconnects a few seconds after connecting OTG?
In other words, the device recognizes the OTG and teh USB as well but soon after it ejects!
I have tried different OTG options (cables and jacks) but the problem does not go away!
Cheers,

the solution (I guess) has revealed itself.
if you have more than one OTG controller, i.e. exfat apk, file manager + or similar, app on your mobile then the phone tends to eject the usb unless you choose one of those apps as "default".

Update:
Unfortunately, what I experienced was not a solution but a temporary illusion!
The problem persists; the USB OTG keeps dropping!
I guess it is a kernel issue as there is a disconnection between the software and the hardware.
Happy to have your thoughts.
Cheers,

I have this issue too. I have tried more than a dozen devices from different manufacturers to see if there is one that works. Occasionally, I get a connection that will last for at most 10 minutes, but this is about 1 out of 100 times. Most times, it disconnects within seconds.

Strange USB issues with X1

hey all
Just got in my x1 and it works a beauty... however i am experiencing a strange issue when connecting the x1 via USB to my PC.
I have a MicroSD card, though my PC identifies it correctly and i can browse through it, when i try to transfer certain files ..it takes horribly long time like 2-3 mins for ~ 1 MB or so (which is very bad for a USB 2) and most of the times the connection breaks up, with a Windows error ,saying the connection was terminated due to an I/O error or remote device terminated.
I have the same problem using both Active Sync and direct USB transfer.
I have checked this with 2 different cards and both have the same issue, so its a prob somewhere with the phone...
Did/Is anybody encountering a similiar issue ? Any suggestions.
I have tried changing the USB cables as well as installed the s/w's many times.
Cheers
Try using a shorter cable. Or use something like this:
http://www.incomp.hu/bolt/arukepek/USB -MINI USB GYUJTO.JPG
I have a couple of these adaptors and they eliminated the problem for me. I don't know the reason for the problem, or if I'm right about the length of the cable, but it worked for me.
Never had the problem again.
Try changing the USB hub that you use.
ya..i tried changing the USB hubs and cables as well... still no luck...
I just googled I/O error and there are plenty of topics. I couldn't find anything useful though.
Some people suggest that it is either a pc usb hub malfunction or a defect in the micro sd. Which is strange, because I have never had that problem since I changed my usb adapter.
Keep looking man and if oyu find a solution don't forget ot post it .
ok...i uninstalled my USB drivers and reinstall them on my PC...and things seem to be working fine ,so this is not a problem anymore...though when i tried to do Internet sharing via USB , my x1i froze to death, it happened a couple of times...so need to still look out.
I had similar issue when I use longer usb cables, especially when they are of low quality. With short USB cables the problem seems to be missing, so I guess it is something connected with the USB communication, not exactly X1 issue.

USB on PC not working.. tried everything in threads..

So I can't get my desktop OR laptop running XP Pro 32 to even recognize the phone. As in no audio plays and nothing appears in the system tray. Tried with/without debugging mode, installed the samsung drivers etc. The phone doesn't even show up in device manager at all- not even as something unrecognizable. Its as if the port is dead. The phone does 'ding' though and charge ok so it is receiving power... though nothing at all appears in the android notification tab when connected. Any ideas or anyone know of any apps on the pc or android side to take a closer look at whats happening on the bus?
The only way that I can get it to work is to put it in media mode. It shows up as a media device in Win7. If I put it on, "ask every time" or whatever it doesn't work and in mass storage mode it shows up as two unreadable drives, they are grayed out in Explorer... Basically...don't use the "ask every time" for USB function.
This function seems like such a simple thing, not sure why Samsung has so many issues with it considering they have been making media devices for a long time.
Anyway... do you have access to a newer OS to at least rule that out as a cause. Not saying it shouldn't work with XP 32 but just something to check out.
I was having similar issues at first. I take it adb doesn't work either? Well my fix was to delete my whole Android SDK folder, then I redownloaded it (though I just kept the "tools" folder this time). Then I downloaded "USBDeview" (google it) to delete every USB driver that had to do with android (basically just left the printers, HID, and my Sansa drivers), restarted, then I downloaded the samsung drivers from the thread on here, plugged my phone in and manually pointed the driver search to the drivers.
ADB and Mass Storage has been working fine since. All I can tell you is to keep checking cause there's something you're missing, I also thought to myself "what the heck else can I do?" since I had done each one of those steps previously, but maybe I just had to do them all together. Good luck.
another possible solution is to change cables if you're not using the samsung provided cable - some cables are charger only (no data) - some of the motorola cables are charger only and we've already had one poster that had that issue
I couldn't get it to work at first either. I more or less did this.
I plugged in my phone. I did not enable mass storage mode on my phone. Walked away and let my PC think for a while. I came back and I noticed I had two new drives. I then enabled mass storage mode and could connect.
Two of my machines I had to do this. I'm not sure why it wasn't instant, but it just took a bit of patience and walking away from the machine to let it think for a while before I guess it installed the drivers and made its peace with the fact it wasn't the G1 any more.
Say into voice dialer "Open SD card" -> check "Enable USB mass storage". That works if port on PC is OK.
If it's a driver issue, open device manager and uninstall the usb ports. Unplug everything from usb and when you reboot the computer it will automatically reinstall the usb ports.

I ran into the same issue. It was a problem with the USB cable I was using. As soon as I tried a different cable it worked fine.

I second this, I forgot my sammy cable at work on Friday and on way home stopped at T-Mo and picked up a charger w/cable and realized right away this was just a charging cable as soon as I connected it to my PC. I'm returning the cable back to T-Mo tonight. At least I was able to charge my phone over the weekend.
UPDATE: You guys are right, it is the goddamn cables! I bought an extra wall charger + cable at the t-mobile store and was using that at home. I had left the original in-box cable at work. Tried the cable at work today and now the drives pop up. Still don't appear writeable but I can look into that when I have time, probably the typical driver issue. As far as I can tell those separate cables are power only! $15 for a two wires + dc adapter. Thanks Samsung. Grr.
i suspect the mfgrs have gone to charge only cables to help keep folks from tethering - just a suspicion
if the "drives" are popping up, have you "mounted" the phone (pull down notification bar, clik on USB connected and it should give you a window asking to mount the cards or drive)
FYI....The Rocketfish cables you get from Best Buy do not work. They are only capable of charging.
@larryccf...I don't think certain manufacturers are implementing this on purpose so we can't tether. I think their just being cheap.
Where I got my cables on the cheap! and my problem.
I got my cable at monoprice.com. Check it out that is a 10 foot usb cable for $1.69 and it works for me. They have different lengths and even some colors. Now my Mass Storage issue . . .
My Mass Storage via USB works fine unless I enable "USB Debugging" which one of my apps needs to work. Once debugging is enabled I loss the ability to see my sd card and internal storage on my XP netbook. any ideas????
Same Problem
I have the exact issue, tried many things have'nt found a fix yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks,
crx

this worked for me Thanks
Yes phone is mounted, and can be seen w/o usb debugging enabled. However with usb/debugging on it does not read the phone being connected. Meaning that I cannot connect to ADB which is my main concern.
thanks for response tho,

This is my issue exactly, and I haven't found a fix either. Called T-Mobile and they thought turning off debugging was the only fix I needed.
Most of them, sorry to say are half retarded. They think a data reset is the cure-all

Ain't that the truth!
If you are running windows (x86 or x64), it would be wise to install the samsung drivers. I was having this exact problem, but as soon as I installed the drivers from samsung, viola!
I had the latest drivers from google, and they did not work for me.
Here is a link to the thread containing the links to the drivers, thanks to TGA_Gunnman:

USB 3.0 Transfers fail

Hi,
I've been struggling with this problem ever since I've had the Note 3 ( since December). I've been unable to find a solution so am turning to this forum in the hope that someone can shed some light on this.
When I connect via my USB 3.0 port and select MTP (usb 3.0), then try to transfer a file from the note 3 to my pc, the progress bar comes up but sits there at 0% for a while then a message pops up "a device attached to the system is not functioning".
At this point going to other folders reveals no files although the current folder still shows them. This suggest that there is a disconnection of some kind.
Switching back to plain MTP this transfer will work but obviously at usb 2.0 speeds.
I am running Windows 7 and the usb port I have is via a card attached which is an Asus u3S6 (usb 3 / sata 6) card. The chipset on the card is a NEC chip and my other use for it is a bunch of external SATA drives in a USB 3 enclosure. Needless to say there are no problems with running these drives through the ports.
I have Kies 3 installed so any usb drivers needed for the note 3 should be fine. I'm stumped so anyone that can help me troubleshoot this I'd be grateful.
Have you tried enabling " USB Debugging " ?

Yes sorry I forgot to add that fact. It makes no difference.
Guess no one knows
i have somewhat similar problem, at some point of usb 3 file transfer the progress bar freezes and so is "my computer". interestingly the file transfer to note from the pc always works fine, but it always freezes at some point when copying files from note to pc, even during kies backup. usb 2.0 works flawlessly.
i've messed around with usb 3 drivers (asmedia) and even updated its firmware but the freezeups still remain.
gonna try usb 3 transfer on a different pc tomorrow.

This sounds like a different problem but I did get to the bottom of my problem which turned out to be the Anker 2 port hub I had connected to the usb 3.0 port. I didn't think to eliminate this but when I connected directly the problem goes away so the hub I had bought purely to extend the ports for convenience is faulty or incompatible.
Perhaps you have an extension or hub too in which case I'd make sure you connect directly.
USB3 seems a bit flaky in implementation. I had probs with my N3, a Corsair USB3 stick and a USB3 ext HDD. Problem turned out to be the ports on the PC. They would work with most devices but were intermittent or non-functional on others. Of course, among the USB3 devices it WOULD work with were the ones the vendor had. For some devices it behaved like the USB3 extra connectors in the plug or socket weren't long enough - push it in harder or push it sideways slightly and it would connect but drop as soon as you let go. (not good to do 0 USB carries power and this is a good way to get an arc across the plug and fry things)
The PC vendor gave me an add-on front port panel and all is fine now. Even though it plugs into the same port on the MB.
Note the USB3 HDD still pops up the 'check drive' error every time I connect but I haven't taken the time to nuke it and rebuild yet. But the Corsair now works and so does the phone.
Ah, the joys of the MTP protocol...
Same issue here. As well as it stops responding halfway through a transfer, crashes the connection when making a new folder, takes about 3 years to copy 1GB, randomly disconnects...
My TF700 started doing this after the 4.1.2 update removed UMS. My S3, same story. My Note 3, same story. 29 different computers, 4 different systems (XP, 7, 8, OSX). Different cables, different ports, with and without drivers, with and without USB debugging.
I bloody hate MTP. It's useless, limiting (because now it can't be used as a drive to attach to a mediaplayer via USB..) and about as stable as nitroglycerin during an earthquake.

I thought I'd give up on hubs and just get an extension as my USB3.0 is on the back of the computer and not that accessible.
I've seen a lot of complaints about hubs and simple extensions that have this poor connectivity which seems crazy to me since it's a bit more important to have a solid connection on USB 3 plugs, besides which it's not as though the usb connectors are rocket science.
I'll try the extension and hope I get a reasonable one.
well i did try the usb 3.0 file transfer on a different pc with a different usb controller and it worked fine, copied my 5gb music folder to the pc without any problems. so in my case i guess it's some incompatibility with the asmedia 104x controller (i did connect directly in both cases and the same cable was used).

it seems like it is indeed MTP issue here ! i rolled back to the old 2006 microsoft driver and i managed to do a full backup including music and everything else with kies. but after a while i tried again and it froze up again, i'll keep experimenting.
Sorry to resurrect this 3 month old thread but is there any way to fix this?
Whenever I want backup anything from my phone storage to PC, I have to do it in chunks of like, 50 files or less (huge PITA with TiBU). If I try to copy the whole folder, my computer locks up and I have to hard reset it. I've tried everything mentioned here short of buying a new USB3 controller.

Weird USB data cable issue

I've tried with both a USB 3.0 cable, the original data cable and a OEM cable.
This happened with both 4.3 and 4.4 so it's most likely to do with the driver:
when I access my phone, and try to create a folder, rename or delete a folder, it just freezes (the window, not the phone or PC operating system). this is solved only by disconnecting the data cable from the phone.
If I tried to create a folder, a new folder (with the name "new folder") will appear but nothing else.
It happens both on the phone memory and on the SD card.
Can anyone help? Is there another driver version I need to install? the version I currently use is: 1.5.27.0
thanks!

Hi, I have experienced this as well and it is caused by a slow machine(PC/Laptop). When I connect my phone to my "slower" machine the freezing happens. However if I connect it it to my high-end machine, no freezes whatsoever. Not limited to just the note but also both my tab and lumia.

Rubbish.
Unless you're telling me a 3.4Ghz i7 with 16GB RAM & USB3.0 isn't powerful enough to handle this?
I have a very similar issue since 4.4.2, too. Renaming anything will crash the MTP. Since creating a new folder starts in 'change name' mode, it can't confirm without crashing. (Deleting works fine, though.)
All my Non-4.4.2 devices don't have the issue, and my NotePro with a different USB3 protocol doesn't, either. I've tried 12 Note 3's on 15 PC's ranging from a crappy one to something that would make every gamer jealous, same result.
And yes, I've reflashed, reset, redone it all.
My pc isn't the issue. Quad core with 8gb ram, and it works fine with my tablet. Thanks for trying to help. Any other ideas?

Have you tried usb 2 cable? I have absolutely never had any issues making/renaming/deleting/moving folders and files using my home or work computer with Note 3 (4.3 and 4.4), but I use usb 2 cable, since my OEM cable is broken.
My computer shows Samsung driver 2.9.319.511 dated 5/11/12 and Samsung USB driver for phones 1.46 dated 1/4/13 on Win 7 64 bit. I use this functions often, since I lost some pictures due to sd card failure, now camera saves all video/pics to phone memory and then I back them up to computer and then transfer them to SD manually. BTW are you switching your phone to USB 3? Because I think there is a timeout for USB 3, after 10 min or so USB 3 connection reverts to USB 2 or something like that, so maybe you timing out and switch over hangs? Just a very wild guess.
I 've 1.5.33 dricers, you should uninstall and install again yours or install new ones

I'd buy that if it was one computer. Not on 15 different ones, though.
i have the same problem with usb 3.0 since the day i bought this phone 8 months ago. it rarely gts detected by pc . at last a month ago i lost all hope and jst tried to forget that my phone has usb 3.0 and now i use usb 2.0 cables
I installed the latest driver (1.5.45) and most issues are gone. Creating a folder is very very slow though. It can take several minutes. And there's no difference if I use a USB 3.0 data cable or a USB 2.0 data cable. I don't even have usb 3.0 support in my PC anyways.

Oh well I guess I was wrong but in my case, that is the solution. I was on NF4 and NH1 and having the same results. My tab stock is even on 4.1.2.

Can't be detected by laptop but can charge

My phone cannot be detected but I can be charge. It can't also detect OTG even though I flashed OTG fix.
Any solution?

Hi Random, here are a few things I'd try:
1. Try one or two different USB cables and see if you get the same results.
2. When the phone is connected to PC, you need to go to the phone and under the system notification, specify what you want the USB Preferences to be (Use USB for: File Transfer, USB Tethering, etc) just to make sure.
I can't help with the OTG as I haven't used it yet, but maybe one of the other members can shed some light on the issue. Good luck and I hope you get it sorted.

I've used another cable, it's still the same.
But our desktop can detect it.
usb drivers
since your desktop can detect it try this.
connect it to your desktop and go into device manager and find what USB driver is being used.
now check if that driver is also present on the laptop. if not copy it over and restart the laptop.
