Q: Has anyone managed to root and install twrp in their Mi A1? - Xiaomi Mi A1 Questions & Answers

I just got my Mi A1 yesterday from a reseller here in the Philippines. I had my bootloader unlock so I am thinking about rooting or installing twrp for my device? Any inputs will be appreciated.

I tried latest magisk but it is not working...

Pixel devices are also having the same issue...
A/B partitions are the culprit..
Magisk dev is working on getting it supported officially...
(He knows how to do it)
Just need some patience.
We might get system less root access after that...

Sounds like a music in my ears. So, were they able to make it work for pixel? Or still not yet?

Unofficially for pixel...
Someone made it working for pixel and then upload the changes to github...
Now magisk dev is working to include those changes and it will work with official app also...
We can't use that zip made for pixel as it needs to be flashed rtnw...

Nice. Hopefully, we'll get it working too. For now.. let us pray together.. ???

Is an unlocked bootloader required to install magisk root through magisk manager?

https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/unofficial-google-pixel-family-support-t3639262

Yeah let's wait patiently...so that we can install miui 9 on it

I have TWRP, custom rom, custom kernel and root, the problem ravinder0003 has is only for him, not everyone has that problem if you need help I can help you rooting your phone

There should be penalties for resurrecting old threads (1 yr ago!) with nonsense replies. The TWRP problem is partially solved and there should be no issue with installing TWRP on this device.

Nobody has to get that done. It's already done. Fastboot OEM unlock unlocks the bootloader. And root with SuperSu or phh superuser. All we really need is TWRP.

lol u r correct, i forgot about that, i guess just have to wait on a TWRP then.
TWRP is actually waiting on you.
Join #twrp and you'll have it. (see signature for link, or click here)
Basically, we don't have the crypto libraries needed for decrypt because OnePlus hasn't made 3T firmware available yet.
I want you to install a half-working build of TWRP and guide you through making a full firmware flashing backup so I can use that to complete support.
Hop, skip, get to it!
(and no, you will get nothing good out of waiting for someone else to step up)
PS. if you post here saying you will come if no one else does, all you're doing is stopping other people from assisting
Update 1:42 AM EST: no one's showed up yet so I can only assume not many people have received their device yet. i'm gonna take a nap now and i'll be back on in ~10 hours... so about 12 PM EST maybe later. you won't find me online before then. (that's 5 PM UTC+0)

You need to be registered, you can join #jcadduonoisawesome or just /msg jcadduono hi I'll be awake for the next 20 minutes I guess.
You could also just choose a name you want, type /ns register <password> <email address>, then click link in email and be able to join any channel on IRC you like.
No risk.

I was thinking, is it possible to do 'fastboot update supersu.zip' first, then backup all the partition first before doing anything. At a minimum you should be able to backup the recovery and rom partition so you can't screw up too bad, since there is no ROM image and official TWRP at the moment.

thanks to @dustin_b twrp is almost complete, I have backup images stored at https://build.nethunter.com/misc/oneplus3T/partitions/ for now which should work through fastboot flash (100% stock, untouched, all dd copies)
should have a public TWRP image up in an hour or 2
I hope that we will see CM14.1 in a week or two. Oxygen OS is a mess full of security bugs.
Cool so root and twrp tonight

Don't try to root Nougat from Android Infotech website!

Hi all,
I receive a lot of private messages about root for Nougat from this website:
http://www.androidinfotech.com/2017/06/root-sony-xperia-xa-ultra-nougat.html
DON'T CLIC ON IT, IT'S A CLICBAIT!
I never released anything for Nougat so please don't ask me why it doesn't work, it's only a scam to win money from ads.
If you can't find my work on Xda you will not find it anywhere.

Hi, technically root is possible, I have it but not released to the public. Why? Because nobody supported my work and as you can see my root guide have only 29 thanks. You will have to wait for a release from an other user or maybe if my guide reaches 100 thanks (don't count on it).
Damn...
I had TA dumped the day I got it and I am ready to root it.
Well, I have to return it because there no root on 7

DRM fix with TA dump doesn't work on Nougat, bootloop at Sony logo (tested on XA Ultra)
The only good news it that SafetyNet is OK with Magisk Manager app v5.0.4 and zip v13.1 on Nougat.

I'm not nervous but politeness is a minimum when someone spend some time for you, it's not normal to ask for any thank. I talk about my root guide (and root files). I was silly to think this, now I learned a good lesson: work for yourself and you will not have to wait for any thank.

Me ? I never said to go back to 6.0. Maybe it's your fault because you forgot to exclude TA parts of the firmware or you didn't used the fsc script or you used an old version of Flashtool? I downgraded/flashed my devices many times and never got any problems.

Agreed. I rolled back to 6.0 2 times without problems. Btw. I have a spare Z1 and I accidentally flashed those .ta files but they did no harm. I think they are useless even when flashed.

I successfully flashed to 6.0 (.160), but after I flashed your kernel from dev section and it has bootloop problem (from either rootpack or individual). Should I flash to earlier version? My choice is
Customized LAM (.182, 7.0)
Customized US (.182, 7.0)
Customized Peru (.160, 6.0)
Service Exchange Unit (.111, 6.0)
Please continue your work, and I always give thanks once I found it's working.
----- update -----
I sucessfully flashed to Service Exchange Unit (.111, 6.0) and everything worked as it's supposed to be, and rooted with SuperSU (but I will move to Magisk in the future)

You quoted wrong person. If you flash an older kernel over a new firmware, you get bootloop. I had that too.
I really wish I could do such coding to compile both boot and recovery because XA Ultra is really awesome, but you have to catch up with version.

Flash GSI Roms on Razer Phone 2!

While looking around and trying to compile TWRP and getting errors doing so, I have finall come accross a solution as to how to get GSI roms to boot, it seems we needed special flash instructions and im eve gonna test some other things later. But without further do, here are the instructions!
Step 1: Go here and read instructions CAREFULLY! "https://www.xda-developers.com/flash-generic-system-image-project-treble-device/"
Step 2: We need special flash instructions so flash this command. "fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img" (Special flashing instructions here https://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...18&postcount=2)
Step 3: if it doesnt work, try again. I am currently booting into Phh-Treble.
Step 4: Rejoice as we can now get away from stock!
Credits where credit is due !
UPDATE: Okay so, pretty sure dm-verify is making it so it doesnt fully boot :/ still working on it.

what you want to do is downlaod the stock rom, unzup it to desktop. copy your boot.img to your phone. download magisk manager from the xda thread. install the manager and then patch the boot.img. reboot the phone and you'll see it in your downlads. copy that to your stock rom folder (you'll need adb and fastboot files). run the command "fastboot flash boot boot.img" and youre rooted. but at this current time root is kinda pointless.
also... be sure to check out the root guide first. forgot you need to unlock bootloader and critical.

Not that I know of. Why are you hesitant to root? It's not hard. You just need to do your homework and follow instructions. We all had to start somewhere. Also, if something goes wrong, it's rare to really brick a phone. They can almost always be recovered.

There's no risk to rooting. Grab the MDM tool it's your always go to tool to bring phone back to stock if there's an issue.
I used to root for Adaway, Viper, and Substratum but with the theme engine now and Blokada (or my personal VPN) and most of my audio listening is not on this device I actually haven't rooted a OnePlus phone in almost a year. Keep in mind if you root you'll lose L1 provisioning (capped at [email protected] on YouTube TV which is a deal breaker for me) along with Netflix and other things that require Widevine DRM to play HD content. Also, having to update the ROM you gotta disable Magisk modules, disable substratum themes, flash the OTA, then reflash TWRP, reflash Magisk, re-enable all your modules and themes. At least this is how it was on the last round of OnePlus devices. Maybe I'm getting older but just simple flash OTA and reboot at my leisure and everything still just works...

Most apps can be light or dark theme.
You can also install DarQ from XDA Labs to dark theme more apps.
Quick Settings in the app store allows you to add a ton of more toggles to quick settings.
Hope that helps.

It's a bit old but you could try Andromeda from the play store and follow the instructions with substratum both installed and access to a PC worth a try couldn't shouldn't hurt
its pointless anyway
even on rotted OxygenOS most themes dont support it so there are always issues with themes
I prefer running custom AOSP ROMs as then themes work much better in terms of versions etc

I'm using Swift Installer and no problems. I have just about everything blacked out.
Many packages are supporting it now. Liv Dark, Swift, Darc, Liv Light, Valerie. Def worth the few minutes to gain root access.

Given there's no TWRP support as long as nothing goes wrong I agree. If during a flash or if the phone randomly wants to glitch out causing a bootloop during normal usage you're sitting with a paperweight unless you're in front of a computer with ADB and your files available to jump start this device in fastboot. No TWRP and rooting and flashing the boot partition to gain root in most cases likely fine but you're playing with fire without a way to attempt to fix your device while on the go. Correct me if I'm wrong and I might reconsider my personal stance.
In addition, I love this device for the option to root, but the L1-->L3 downgrade in DRM provisioning is a partial deal breaker for my personal usage with YouTube TV. I like to watch sports and being restricted to [email protected] is awful. I could deal with the 480p component but the lack of 60 FPS hockey and football are motion blur central. Keeping it not rooted keeps it at [email protected] or [email protected]

i also bought mine unlocked from Amazon.
But i wouldn;t risk to root it.
Without root there is no other way?
Thanks.

Don't root if you have no idea what you're doing
But like everyone said previously, root is THE thing to do once you got an Android
There's no harm for your device, if you fail, you flash a whole firmware and youre good to go again

Many packages are supporting it now. Liv Dark, Swift, Darc, Liv Light, Valerie. Def worth the few minutes to gain root access.

Lol I sold mine a few days ago too. Can't justify 1k price. Getting a Poco f2 pro to check out.

new phone on it way in

So I have an op8 pro international version coming in and I see that the devs haven't got it fully working with twrp and etc and I understand now that things have completely changed with new version of Android my question is
Have the devs got to the point where I can have a phone that has adaway and vanced youtube and everything still works? Lol all I really need are those 2 things
Thanks

Please search. Each is easily done. You should search. Research. Read some more. Research. And then read some more. Learn how to do it. Learn how to fix things if you break it.

yes, alot of member here already root their phone.
also for the vanced youtube you don't really need to root your phone to use it, since vanced has the non-root version of it
The 8 Pro is very customizable on XDA. Unlock bootloader and Root are easy enough...

So I'll be able to completely update my phone to whatever version is out right now out the box and be able to root and install adaway and vanced or will I need to make sure I'm on a certain build number?
I know I can easily root and grab the two apps I want but I want to make sure I'm able to keep the phone close to up to date to the build numbers oneplus is dropping

correct.
I didn't root on my current Op8p device, but I used to daily use my Op5 and root the phone while still up to date to the latest beta build.
each time after you flash the latest build which you can do from the OTA just do :
1. manually re-flash the twrp
2. flash magisk
and that's it!
modifying Oneplus devices is so easy compared to any other brand
edit : my suggestion is just unlock the bootloader when the phone first arrive, skip anything on the first setup and do the proper one after you unlock the bootloader.
that's what I did, even though I didn't root my phone

I wouldn't do that!
1. TWRP doesn't work with open beta builds, because of Android 11.
2. It's much easier to install new update with system updater (local upgrade). Don't reboot if finished. Than you go to magisk and: install --> install inactive slot (after ota). Reboot your phone and you will have the new update with root.

I have both of these.
1. Unlock bootloader.
2. Root with patched boot.img
3. Upstate to canary to pass safety net
4. Install Renovate ice
5. Install xXx
Both apps installed, all mods you could need, safety net passes, everything works.
