[SM-P905] Upgrade to Rooted Official Lollipop 5.0.2 - can be downgraded

This has been tested with the Italian firmware released on 4/30/2015, PDA: P905XXUABOD7, CSC: P905ITVABOD7 (of course the language can be set to English after installation). This method should however work for other Lollipop releases as they become available in your region. This method does not trip the knox flag.
Requirements
1- Rooted KitKat (the easiest way to get root is to flash a ROM dated before June 2014 and root it with Towelroot).
2- FlashFire app v 0.17 or higher: The only way to get it is by following the instructions at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/paid-software/flashfire-t3075433
Procedure
1- Make a back up of all your files.
2- Download your Lollipop ROM from Sammobile and unzip the .zip file to get the tar.md5 file. Copy the tar.md5 file to your sdcard.
3- Run FlashFire. Tap the +, Flash Firmware Package, and select the tar.md5 file. It will scan the file and opens a menu of option to choose.
4- Choose: Boot, Recovery, System, Cache, Preloaded/Hidden.
Also choose Highly recommended but optional: Modem Firmware (modem.bin) and Firmware (NON-HLOS). If you select these you should answer NO when it asks you "You are flashing both normal and ..."
The rest should be unchecked. Now tap the check mark at the top right corner of the dialog box.
5- When that is done, FlashFire adds two items to the list of actions: Process Cache and EverRoot. Open process cache and uncheck all the items. Open EverRoot and select Inject SuperSU and unckeck the other options.
6- Tap the + again and choose Wipe. Select System, Dalvik, and Cache. I highly recommend that you check 3rd party apps too, which will erase your existing apps and settings but it will give you a clean install. Do not select Internal storage.
7- Tap and hold to move the boxes containing the actions to get them in this order: Wipe, Flash Firmware Package, followed by the rest.
8- Tap the Reboot box and select Reboot to Recovery.
9- Hit the FLASH sign at the bottom of the page and hit OK. THE SCREEN WILL GO COMPLETELY BLANK DURING THE FLASHING OPERATION. Do not freak out. This is a bug in the tool and will hopefully be fixed in a future version. After 5-10 minutes your tablet reboots. If it takes longer than 20 minutes something is wrong.
10- During the first reboot it may take 5-10 minutes before you get the initial setup dialog. (If it takes longer than 20 minutes something is wrong.) Complete it and you will be on rooted Lollipop.
TiP: Settings -> General -> Security -> Security Policy Updates -> Uncheck Automatic Updates, and also Settings -> General -> About Device -> Software Updates -> Uncheck Auto Updates
Troubleshooting
If after the upgrade you suspect something does not work, install Flashfire on your rooted lollipop and start from step 4 again.
If you experience random reboots freeze or otherwise disable knox and update programs.
Downgrade
If you are not happy with the results, or something goes wrong, download a KitKat firmware from Sammobile and flash it in ODIN. Make sure to clean cache and data in recovery.

did you try to register from a mobile device? If so try to register from a PC or a laptop and download the files there.

Does anyone have a flashable bootloader package? From experience Lollipop is unstable with the old bootloader....at least it was on the N9005.
EDIT: Have successfully upgraded. Initially left the Apps and data but the tablet got stock on "checking connection" during the initial setup. A fectory reset did dix that but also cleared the internal Sd card

Well, I did two simple steps: upgraded up to 5.0.2 and flashed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50498424&postcount=235 CF-Root via Odin. Works fine.

Pleasee note that flashing CF autoroot trips your knox flag irreversibly, if that is important for you.

The knox is knocked at the first reboot after the Odin flash. For you it shouldn't matter because you have already done it. Not a big deal. People have differing opinions about the consequences of tripping knox. I normally try to keep it unchanged on my devices but I don't have a personal opinion on that.

Will this work for the 905V, Verizon with locked bootloader?

Works fine, but I had a huge battery consumption until I flashed with Odin the Bootloader, the Kernel and the modem.

You don't need to flash bootloader, just make sure you flash the modem when you use flashfire.

I did flash the modem in flashfire, then observed huge battery consumption. After that I reflashed the modem plus flashed the kernel the kernel, but the battery went from 80 to 50% in less than two hours using it not more than 1/2 hour, then I flashed the bootloader and consumption was back to normal (approximately 1% consumption per hour in idle mode). I know that the bootloader shouldn't affect the battery consumption, but that's what happened to me.

I seem to be having an issue with the security. After following instructions, upon boot I get an error "System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone."
Anyone have any ideas? I'm gonna try getting on a Windows computer and using Odin (I'm on linux)
Edit: I'm back on stock, seems this is blocked by the Verizon bootloader. It's a shame they feel the need to cripple such a good piece of hardware.

1a) Prep - before you do anything, in stock, go to settings/Development Options (which is turned on by tapping /settings/about phone/Build Number about 10 times.)

turn Debugging - "USB debugging" ON.
1b) Now! - To do anything, you must unlock your bootloader: This is done by going to the Motorola site and following their instructions completely.

They want you to "Install the Android SDK.". You only need adb and fastboot on your PC (windows or Linux).

For Ubuntu Linux simply type fastboot on the terminal and if it's missing a command will pop up as to how to add it - simple. same with adb.

I also recommend doing it twice in a row, simply because once in a while that is needed.
3) okay, now you can boot into TWRP: power off, hold power and vol-down for a few secs until fastboot screen pops up. use vol-down to step through the options. Choose Recovery and press power to select. 10 secs later, you're in TWRP. If you get the dead android it means you still have the stock recovery - boot to fastboot and flash TWRP again.
IMMEDIATELY tap Backup and select to put backup on external storage - your SDcard. NOTE - if your SDcard has been converted to "internal storage" you will have to choose "internal storage" (em0). I did it twice. This is your stock ROM. YOU WILL NEED THIS LATER.

At this point I recommend you boot back into stock and connect your phone to your PC via USB (slide down) and copy that backup in the TWRP folder to your PC. at least once, maybe twice, for safe keeping. You will need this if you wish to test if a problem exists only on a custom ROM but not on the stock ROM. You will also need this if you simply choose to run stock, instead of a custom ROM. Remember, you are now testing ROMs - nothing is certain!
4. Getting rid of the nasty boot message:

Grab the one(s) you like and download - they're in .zip format. Put it on SDcard. Boot to TWRP, tap install, choose the one you want to flash. Voila.
Be aware there are some sites out there with logos that don't work on Moto G3.
5. To flash a custom ROM: Download to PC and put it on your SD card. Do same for gapps. (gapps - g-apps - google apps allow you to log in to your google account, use play store, etc. example http://opengapps.org/ (use arm, 7.1, whatever size you wish)(if you're new use full, mini, or micro until you know what you need. If you're on a 1GB phone, consider nano or pico.) )

http://opengapps.org/ or whatever gapps you want.
Boot to TWRP.
Clean flash:
tap WIPE,
tap advanced, carefully checkmark:
Dalvic/ARTCache,
System,
Data,
Cache,
and then swipe the bottom swipe button. Takes a few sec. This is what makes a "clean flash".
Generally: Don't wipe "internal storage" or SDcard as this is where TWRP stores its backups/nandroids. - I always copy my TWRP backups to PC for safety.
Then back to menu screen and tap Install, select the rom, and swipe and let it do its thing.
Then back and tap Install, select the gapps and swipe to flash it.
THEN, and only then: tap Reboot (if you're at the main menu you also have to tap System to boot from system.)
The install takes 3 min or so before it starts asking questions.
Be sure to choose "Set up as New" or else you get whatever junk is in your google drive. This has cost errors and much time. <-----
6. Root: If you want to use bank apps, PokemonGo, etc, follow these instructions for Magisk:

A factory reset is recommended. It wipes /data, /cache, ART cache as well as any remnant files in the internal and external storages, which are missed when manually wiping these partitions.
Wiping of /system is not always needed as the updater script of a ROM automatically wipes it before copying files. It is usually needed in case of updating ROMs where some persistent mods are needed to be removed such as gapps.

I thought this was true but found my gapps was remaining residual in system - had to clear system to get rid of gapps.

Yes you are correct, gapps won't get removed for new builds of the same ROM due to a persistent ROM script. However flashing a ROM different than the one currently installed usually ignores such scripts and does a clean wipe. Doing a manual wipe just to be sure is fine, even needed sometimes.
I just wanted to point out that not performing a factory reset (twrp>wipe>swipe to factory reset) can leave potential conflicting files in aforementioned places which can cause unexpected behaviours ranging from FCs to bootloop. The potential issues are rare but I think you know how much trouble it can bring to folks trying to capture real bugs (thanks for hard work at Linage ); it was all about removing the potential factors .

The TWRP wipe-swipe does Data, Cache, and Dalvic. That's what I used to do. After messing up some tests this past week and wasting a lot of time, I now recommend adding system to that:
In advanced, checking data, cache, and dalvic/ARTcache, and, now, system. as far as i can see, I am leaving nothing other than internal storage and sd card (and of course whatever is in OTG if there's one attached). TBPro puts its backups on "internal storage". By the way I do appreciate your taking the time to look so closely at this!

To root stock ROM with SuperSU, you need to open a terminal in TWRP and type

This forces a systemless installation.
Edit: Not necessary anymore, just flash SuperSU zip and you're done
MagiskSU is an alternative to SuperSU and similar apps that hides root (to SafetyNet), so it's better to use that with stock ROM. It is also pre-installed on some ROMs like AICP.
If you're using LineageOS, it's best to use the official root package: https://download.lineageos.org/extras (direct link).

a) I have seen that but not tried it. I did add a note so you're now the authority!
b) not since SuperSU 2.79 - Those were invented because earlier SuperSUs had probs. I've been flashing 2.79 for a while now with no problems on Lineage.

SuperSU 2.79 "General Release" was the version of the change, anything prior needed the forced systemless command, all 2.79 or later versions include the correct check to flash on most Moto devices without the command. Using the echo command to create the file has no detrimental effects on later versions though. Note that using https://download.chainfire.eu/supersu/ as your download link will always get you the most current stable version of SuperSU available directly from the official source.
Magisk is the way to go to root most stock devices though, I would definitely agree with that.

Instruction for TWRP, rooting and updating T-Mobile G5 H830

Hi,
If this is the wrong place, please move it.
I'm new to LG G5. Bought from eBay with a modified ROM H83020i_un. Below are the steps I took to root this device and upgrade it to the latest stock Android 7 ROM
Notes about rebooting into recovery
1. Power off device.
2. Hold power and vol down button.
3. Wait until lg logo appears.
4. Release power button only for one second while continuing to hold vol down. After the second elapsed press and hold the power button until it boots into recovery.

Notes
NEVER use Settings -> factory reset. It will end up in TWRP loop
If you ended up in TWRP loop, never wipe misc partition. It will result in MAC Address changes every time you reboot . The correct method is [FIX] Stuck in Custom Recovery [TWRP/CWM] (After trying OTA)
1. Install 20a. This is the last version I can install TWRP and root. Instruction is [STOCK][N][ARB01] H830 20A ROM + Flashable ZIPs + IMGs + KDZ. I used LG UP method and this is fairly painless
2. Unlock the bootloader, install TWRP and root. Instructions are now with TWRP!. However, the adb posted in the link can't ever trigger the Allow USB Debug prompt on the phone. I wasted 2 hours on trying all kinds of combination of settings. Eventually, I download version 1.4.3 Minimal ADB and Fastboot Tool and it worked as expected. I flashed SuperSU. And formatted the data to disable encryption. Now I have 20a with TWRP and root
3. Upgrade to the latest (20m as of now). Instructions for 20k is [STOCK][N][ARB01] H830 20k ZIPs + IMGs + KDZ (2017-07-01 Security Patch), following Install via TWRP Directions -> Stock ROOTED. I had to do quite a bit reading to make sure the correct step (keep TWRP and root).

recovery-from-boot.p is contained in the system partition and returns any time you flash a stock system.img (such as my COMPLETE zip).. so if you were on, for example, 20f and then renamed/deleted recovery-from-boot.p.. and then flash 20i COMPLETE zip.. you would have to rename/delete the file again... and when you flash the next update you'll have to do it again etc. The reason I leave this file inside the system file is because I'm providing 100% stock images so users can go back to 100% stock or mod/customize things to their liking.

am now suggesting people wipe cache after flashing my COMPLETE zip but before they flash a root zip. This may help with the random people who seem to lose TWRP after flashing Magisk/SuperSU.

So I followed the TWRP stock rooted step. Wipe cache -> flash complete zip -> wipe cache -> flash SuperSU zip -> Mount system -> File Manger rename /system/recovery-from-boot.p to /system/recovery-from-boot.p.bak. Reboot (no need to format data)
To get into TWRP, you would need to boot into recovery, and choose Yes twice (it won't reset your device)
4. Disable OTA update as it will break my phone.
The instruction is in LG G5 ALL-IN-ONE THREAD in the section of "Disable OTAs". I've also found another method which was posted for G4 but the menu is also available in G5 at https://www.androidexplained.com/lg-g4-disable-ota-updates/

It contains some other methods but none worked on non-root devices.
On rooted device, I can find LG Update Center and FOTA and disabled them.
However, Google Play Service still show the notification for Android System Update. The only option is to disable notification from it.

I say this because battery life is horrible I have seen this on other phones that have encryption enabled. Or is it KNOX doing the battery drain?

With this phone the way to root it would be Reset to factory then not letting the phone to load and run stock install WE HAVE TO AVOID ENCRYPTION WHICH THIS PHONE FORCES! SO WE FACTORY RESET AND GO IMMEDIETLY TO BOOTLOADER

Oh I should tell you I installed crom service but the phone didnt reset and apply update immedietly it was like 1 or 2 days later. I just left it installed figured if it didnt do anything right then it doesnt work. I Got distracted with a phone call and forgot to uninstall crom. Thats the story I want root for my phone

But that setting is not on this phone. I have the j727vl. I downloaded a app that lets me access the setting but it's blank. Does that make sense? Anyways. I Googled ?how I could possible get my phone to let me do that, and i cane across rooting it. I've tries kingroot and one other thing (forgot what it's called ?) so please if someone can explain what to do (in a language I can understand) id be forever grateful. I just want to be able to watch Netflix again ??

You don't need an app to be able to use your phone as a hotspot
All you have to do is go to connections and then Mobile Hotspot and tethering

I cant. That is not even an option on this phone, or atleast not the one I have. I have read that the carrier may have that setting blocked.

Anything so Far? I tried to root my phone but when following instructions but I can't flash anything. I tried going in control panel, update drivers etc. but no luck. Root didn't work for sm-s737tl
I love this Walmart family mobile phone but would like to root it. I bought the same phone for my mom because it's a great phone for the price. I tried the root as outlined but the result was FAIL! ODIN found the phone and connected but the end result was Complete (Write) operation failed and the download screen said something about a security check failing.
I'm assuming I'm missing an OEM unlock but don't see it in developer options menu.
My baseband version is s737tlud1aqf2
I really want to root this phone!

and flash with odin fails and "SECURE CHECK FAIL (RECOVERY)" is displayed in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Just FYI for others trying to flash same model phone as me.

I found a solution if you don't need TWRP, only Magisk or Root. (Using sm-p580 german version P580KXU1CRJ7)
Short Version:
Install Magisk without TWRP with odin in AP section(google it)
Problem is: Once booted up it will tell you that you have to reset your device because the system recognizes that you modified something.
Solution: Just click on the reset button( Magisk will still be there afterwards).
Long Version
Flash the Oreo firmware onto your device.
Set it up (turn on USB debugging) (or dont, I believe you dont need it for download mode ?)
Unzip the AP part of the firmware you have flashed. You may need a modified version of 7-zip, I needed it, because it couldn't unzip lz4.
Google mcmilk 7 zip and download the github release (I hope I'm allowed to reference it, CREDIT goes to MILKY)
You need the boot.img.
Now install Magisk Manager apk.
Under its settings check " .img.tar" under "return of patched boot-images" (Something like that, mine is german)
Click on install in Magisk Manager apk.
Select make thing with boot img, use the boot.img you have extracted and copied onto your phone.
Magisk will create new patched boot img automatically, copy the finished one u find under your main storage in downloads to your pc.
Go into download mode and flash new boot.img with odin using the AP tab.
Now do the things I described in the Short Version
Afterwards install Magisk Manager Apk.
You need internet connection, because it will prompt you to allow installing additional stuff.
A message from some Security App will appear, that something is wrong.
And your device will get laggy and restart.
After that the lag will disapear
I like to use Bk disabler to remove bloatware/ other stuff to flash or back up your device
(Please dont remove any of the 3 phone apks, on Nougat it worked to remove two of them, but oreo will continuously give an error message <- I found out that you can uninstall two of them, but dont uninstall the storagedial-programm thats what gives the errormessage.)

Anyone can search mcmilk 7zip in google and download program to extract boot.img.lz4 and get boot.img :good:

use the last TWRP for Oreo.
old version makes black screen or red stripes.
go in download-mode (power+home+vol-) and install the last TWRP over with Odin.
for Oreo use the last Odin 3.13

I can confirm that this method does work. I used it on my SM-P580 yesterday. I would suggest that you first backup your all of your apps, contacts, photos, etc using SmartSwitch. You will need to restore everything after the tablet tells you that it needs to be reset because it wipes everything. After the restore, you will need to enter all of your accounts and passwords again but at least all of the data will be back.

Install Magisk without TWRP with odin in AP section(google it)
Problem is: Once booted up it will tell you that you have to reset your device because the system recognizes that you modified something.
Solution: Just click on the reset button( Magisk will still be there afterwards).
Long Version
Flash the Oreo firmware onto your device.
Set it up (turn on USB debugging) (or dont, I believe you dont need it for download mode ?)
Unzip the AP part of the firmware you have flashed. You may need a modified version of 7-zip, I needed it, because it couldn't unzip lz4.
Google mcmilk 7 zip and download the github release (I hope I'm allowed to reference it, CREDIT goes to MILKY)
You need the boot.img.
Now install Magisk Manager apk.
Under its settings check " .img.tar" under "return of patched boot-images" (Something like that, mine is german)
Click on install in Magisk Manager apk.
Select make thing with boot img, use the boot.img you have extracted and copied onto your phone.
Magisk will create new patched boot img automatically, copy the finished one u find under your main storage in downloads to your pc.
Go into download mode and flash new boot.img with odin using the AP tab.
Now do the things I described in the Short Version
Afterwards install Magisk Manager Apk.
You need internet connection, because it will prompt you to allow installing additional stuff.
A message from some Security App will appear, that something is wrong.
And your device will get laggy and restart.
After that the lag will disapear
I like to use Bk disabler to remove bloatware/ other stuff to flash or back up your device
(Please dont remove any of the 3 phone apks, on Nougat it worked to remove two of them, but oreo will continuously give an error message <- I found out that you can uninstall two of them, but dont uninstall the storagedial-programm thats what gives the errormessage.)

Im not sure if this post belongs here, you link to the T580 TWRP, not the P580.
Is that one compatible with P580?

If I do this, will I be able to mount my SD Card as internal storage? 16gb just isnt enough on this tablet.

Do you have to be on oreo already for this to work I'm still on 7.0 and with my system modified I can't upgrade normally

This one worked for me on a P585Y. You just have to skip the steps below.
A message from some Security App will appear, that something is wrong.

It will also show on the Device Maintenance, just ignore the warning.
You can freeze some of the system apps to prevent it from showing on the notification again.

2 side notes on the process:
1. Magisk no longer provides " .img.tar" patched files, so a tool like "Tar-tool" is required to convert the file from the ".img" type. The patched file should be renamed "boot.img" before conversion in order to be succesfully flashed by Odin.
2. like f4vr said, freeze the apps that give the error notification or just disable the specific notification. Hiding them in Magisk Hider does not seem to work

Hello Gyus,
I managed to root the device with the method posted by @amosdinh (Thank you so much). Now I'm trying to configure adoptable storage. So far I didn't achieve this goal. ADB commands doesn't work and I can't install the ASPlugin.zip needed by Root Essentials to set adoptable storage by the app.
TWRP for P585 is corrupted, gives blue/red lines screen. The dev that maintains the code is absent since march. I'm out of luck on this. If anyone have a idea to get adoptable storage on this device while using Oreo, please comment.

Just renaming magisk_patched.img to boot.img and adding to .tar file by 7zip worked for me.

We should ask a dev to update twrp for android 8.1

Same freeze for me with the Omni - can't do anything outside of access download mode

I have the same problem. It just keep getting to the bad TWRP, it seems that it does not work with the SM-P580. I had to flash stock firmware to get it back to work.

Really wish this wasn't the case. I'd actually keep this thing if it had a working TWRP.

On my SM-P580 I used Odin and TWRP I don't get the black screen but when I reboot to get into TWRP recovery mode it shows the padlock and says swipe to unlock. Tried many times bit cannot swipe and cannot get past this. All I want is to be able to use the SD card as internal storage. HELP???? Thanks!!

I've just installed magisk using TWRP via command line.
Read the entire post before trying this yourself.
I installed the latest TWRP, the one that bugs and doesn't display anything, this allows to root without wiping data. I'm running the latest korean firmware for P580.
Just do this:
1. Launch TWRP and INMEDIATELY LOCK YOUR SCREEN. (I got ghost stripes that disappeared after 2 days when testing this, work with low light so you can notice your screen whenever it tuens on) Please don't forget this point, don't [temporarily] damage your screen as I did.
2. adb push Magisk-v[Current version].zip external_sd
3. adb shell
4. twrp install external_sd/Magisk-v[Current version].zip
After this you just need to install MagiskManager-v[Current version].apk and you will be all done.
But there is one thing...
If you ever get into recovery mode, there is no way out without using adb as far as I know. You can launch download mode and cancel it but you'll boot back to TWRP.
When in twrp touching your screen or any button will wake the device up and will start burning the ghost image to your screen.
So if you know of a method for rebooting to system without using adb, please let me know.
Also a solution for this would be to flash back the stock recovery, wich may or may not force to wipe system, that something that needs to be tested tho.
Update: Ok so, you can use a handy tool called MTKroot on recovery.img.lz4 to get recovery.img, then use 7z to pack it into a tar file and flash that tar file with odin (AP, same as TWRP)
This way you will not have a 0.001% chance of random boot into recovery mode and damage your screen
