Old vs New Galaxy Note 8 - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) General

Did Samsung really have a Galaxy Note 8 from several years ago and now a 2017 version? It seems from the forum postings this is so but I can wrap my brain around reusing the same model number so close together.

Yes, I believe it was a tablet; the smaller (8") version of the Note 10.1. It would be nice if the naming convention of these devices was more consistent as to not confuse people, but I'm not sure which way is better and it seems that neither do the manufacturers.

Two diff devices. The Note 8.0 is this thread, and it is a tablet, unless you are in the UK, which is a phablet.
No comparisons, yet newbies want to post threads here without taking notice the device shown for reference and the bazillions of posts are older than the new Note 8.
Most all here know and state their devices by model number and have used Note 8.0 not Note 8 as a name, unless they are lazy and don't type the .0 at the end.

Very different device

it is taking a while. I played with the 10.1 tab pro or whatever with the same specs and it runs much smoother.
It's odd. Here's the press release Samsung U.S. issued dated February 18. Not a single device on the list except for the N3 and SGS4 which were already in the process of receiving KitKat has received it.
Since Samsung literally floods the market with devices, I'm sure they're having a tough time keeping them straight to update. I'm sure we'll get it sometime soon. I hope.
The new Samsung tab 4 line-up are all loaded with KitKat...
but not for us
edited
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
a press release confirming 4.4 KitKat will soon be available for the following devices across all U.S. networks.
These are the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy Note 2, the Galaxy S4, S4 Mini, S4 Active and S4 Zoom, plus the Galaxy S3 and S3 Mini.
The Galaxy Mega and Galaxy Light are also listed.
Moving on to tablets, the Galaxy Note 8.0, Galaxy Tab 3, Galaxy Note 10.1, and finally, the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition
will all be updated to version 4.4.
Samsung says all carrier variants will get the update.
The rollout begins on February 18 and will continue for several months. <===== "Several months" OMG !!!
I actually sent them an email a few days ago. Got a reply although it wasn't very helpful. Here's what they said:
Thank you for contacting Samsung Customer Support.
In regards to your email, unfortunately we do not yet have an official date for when this update will be released for your device.
I am sorry for the inconvenience caused by this.

Still waiting for a higher version of android than 4.1.2 on the Samsung galaxy note 10.1 - N8000... It's only been 1 1/2 years since I got it but we're still stuck there on 4.1.2....
My tablet still works fine so I have no problem waiting. The latest leaked firmware does help tremendously though... it'll come eventually so relax yourselves

Link to firmware?
I'm assuming in that they will hold off as long as possible to release the update. They want to sell the new tab and note pro lines which makes sense. I'm shocked to see the new low end tab 4 lineup has it. Seems very fishy.
I think it's the same business tactic Verizon is using for the kitkat update in the bite 3 which annoys me. Mark my words they will release 4.4.2 to Verizon on day 15 post S5 release. Maximize their sales on the phone. So April 26 kitkat is released to those of us including myself with a note 3 on vzw. Sorry for the rant.

Not really. The only device(s) more expensive than the N10.1-14 are the 12" Pros. From a margin perspective I can't see the Tab Pro 10.1 making Samsung any more money than the N10.1-14.

Google's finally started to exert themselves in leveraging "free Android" against access to Google Apps (Play content apps [movies, music, books, etc.], Google+, Google Play Services, and Chrome). They recently published requirements that, in order to get access, OEM's had to use the latest version of Android on new devices. In addition, the Samsung/Google cooperation agreement seems to have affected Samsung's s/w direction. Magazine UX went from a replacement UI when it was announced with multiple pages pre-configured including being featured as the primary home page to "Content Home" at launch. Half the widgets have been removed, the tiles that could launch any installed app are gone, and it's now one pre-configured page of news set as the last of the home pages. Samsung Hub which probably annoyed Google most as a competitor to Play Content is also gone with the Pros. Leaks of major changes to TW for the SGS5 never came to fruition either.
So something's fishy but my guess is it's more of a political realignment between titans than something to do with any singular device or series of devices. And if as part of the agreement Samsung's adjusting the content in future s/w releases and updates it could explain the delay. This is all supposition on my part but it's odd that a company with Samsung's resources hasn't pushed updates to over a dozen devices they've committed updates for in over two months.

I think that I'm not stretching when I say that probably more than 90% of phone and tablet buyers have absolutely no ideas what version of the operating system is on their device. Holding off on KitKat for a Note 10.1 has nothing to do with sales. It has to do with priorities and resources. I know from experience that good developers are put to work on new products and so-so developers are put on maintenance projects. I'm sure that Samsung is no different.
What I really want is a CM 10.1.. much better than any stock Samsung ROM. But I also see no development in that direction. There are too many devices out there. It's becoming chaos and just very few can catch the time and resources of the developers. Samsung products get worse and worse in quality, Android messier and less truly "open" while Goggle itself more and more controlling.. the whole thing is a mess. I am tired and disappointed. My first original Galaxy Tab 7 was and is still king. Surely getting slower by all current measures but STILL working like new. Amazing build quality, almost 4 years of development and still going.. I'm running 4.4.2 on it, flawlessly.. how ironic this is..

Well you can always try and start development for yourself.
The hardware in the note 10.1 is used in a lot of other devices that are already running KK so all necessary software and drivers should be available.
In theory it wouldn't be all that difficult to port the note pro 12 rom for example. I'm thinking about maybe giving it a go but I'm not really sure where to start.

Same here.. totally agree with you. A 10.1 build should not be so difficult to get together as the hardware is so similar to other machines. That would solve all problems once and for all. But like U, I have no idea where to start.. alone I can't do it. Small team would be great. I'm even willing to pitch some money to get this started and everyone motivated. I am a few days away from selling this tab and giving up. It's useless like it is for me. And I need make the dpi higher because all too small and badly formatted as it is with some of the apps I use at the default 320dpi.. but "darling" Samsung has done something further to this tab's main apps and framework so it will positively NOT boot at higher dpi settings (lower values OK, just not higher).. I tried all possible ways, dpi changing apps and ROMs (I have a P-605). No way. This tab is totally useless not me.. and not to mention I have a disastrous yellow tint on the display and no way to adjust or calibrate that either. Samsung is on the way out of my life.. we get s... t software, no updates and impossible to even try fix it.. is glorious.. I'm done and done..

I have a strong background in IT and software and have some limited programming knowledge so I should be able to get all this.

Maybe we can set up a seperate thread if we can get some people on board.

I totally agree, howerver I hope the porting process will not be that much different.
A succesful port on one model will probably make the porting process for the other a lot easier to pull off.

Let's start a new thread and can some talent gathered and together to get this done! And U want developan overclocking kernel for the P-605. Qualcomm CPUs can go very high.. my HP TouchPad with a venerable Dual-core 1.2GHz running KitKat is overclocked to 2.1GHz stable. I've had this machine for 3 years.. First Gingerbrea, then ICS, then finally CM 10.1. Initially overclocked to 1.7, later 1.9 and finally 2.1 wwith KitKat. Yeah, it runs hot.. but who cares? Rock solid for 3 years and going strong. I bet the 2.3GHz Snapdragon can go easily past 2.5 or 2.7.. and this Tab is large.. plenty of space to dissipate heat.. If we can get CM 10.1 running and push the CPU, this will be an amazing machine..

These 3 tablets need their own sub-forum

Hi Guys,
I have the Galaxy Tab 4 10.1, and I must admit it is difficult to search for threads specific to this device, mostly because the threads are so generic for what is 3 different models (7" 8" & 10.1"). Even the processors are different, which could get people into trouble.
I've already requested a Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 forum. It makes sense since there is already a Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 forum. But I am curious to know member thoughts as to if there really is a need or I am just missing something.

You are not missing one thing here. There really does need to be separate forums for each size of Galaxy Tab 4 series of tablets. I've got the 8" model and I'd really love a forum just for that tablet. Tab 2 and Tab 3 have forums for each size why shouldn't the Tab 4 tablets be any different?

True, but by having only 1 forum the stuff is all over the place. Might as well start off split up so that people don't get confused. It would be consistent with other versions.

hi folks
we understand you want separate forums for the different versions (3,4 etc)
we split the forums based on several factors , not least of which is popularity and interest.
we'll monitor the traffic and flag your request to the admins as things get busier. at that stage a decision will be made as to if we split the forums.

I agree there should be separate threads for each device - I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8". Each device has different specs.
Discussing this request with one of the forum mods for this section. :highfive:
i second the wish for seperate (sub-?) forums!
As far as i understand it the different Tab 4 models have such a different hardware base, dont they?
So topics like firmeware, recoveries and even rooting only work with specific models.. .

Hi,
Mods/Admins... it's time i think.
The concept of only separating these devices based on popularity is completely backwards.
It would have taken an additional 2 minutes to create the sub-forums in the beginning, now it will take days to separate out the relevant posts.
It's disappointing.

[Q] Galaxy Note 4 / S5 G901 similarities

Hi all..
As you may be able to tell I'm new here. After looking around the Note 4 area of the forums, I've noticed that it is full of Custom ROMs and Kernels, which is great as I'm planning on buying one in a couple of months. What I haven't seen, however, is a whole lot of Dev support for the Galaxy S5 G901F, my current phone. This is baffling me somewhat, as the phones are almost identical inside minus the 3GB RAM of the Note. What is even more odd is that after comparing my G901F to two Note 4 Snapdragons in work today, I noticed that my G901F gave them both a kicking in Antutu Benchmark (50300 for G901F, 47900 for Note 4).
With such similarities between the G901F and the Note 4 Snapdragon, why is it that the Note 4 is being so fully supported by Devs? I thought I'd post it in the Note 4 section as this is theoretically where anyone with the knowledge to answer that will reside.
This wasn't intended as a question but it seems I ticked the box. Could a mod fix it? Cheers.
Hope someone can help

That's exactly it. Devs only tend to support a phone they own. If there's not many people own your device then there is little support. A lot of note 3 owners were complaining that the eteam released dn4 for the note 2 and not the n3 saying it was an outdated device. The simple answer is none of the eteam owned a note3

Note 7 discontinued

Hi, recently the note 7 goes out of market, what do u think?
I wonder if the note 5 will receive more updates to hide the disaster existence of the Note 7, it's very sad I'll be patient and wait for the Note 8 ????
This is what they get for skipping the note 6 name. My guess the next "note" will have a different name. One that will not include the word "note". If they were smart they would go back to a flat screen too.

They didn't know they were going to have any battery issues with the release of the phone so they skipped 6. Pretty sure after all these events they regret doing so. Hopefully Samsung makes something good to cover up all this mess with the note 7.
Why would they want to update the Note 5? It's a 2015 phone! They will focus on the current GS7/GS7 EDGE line until a new Note or S8 arrives. They want to keep loyal users by forcing them to buy newer devices, not by updating older ones. I don't judge them, I'll probably one of those first "loyal users" preordering the next Samsung flagship the next year and hoping that it will not explode before I took it out of the box...
+I am very sorry for Samsung, I like them,
But, it will be nice to also to discontinue new ui grace (I know my opinion is in deep minority).
For me old classic ui was far better (on s5 even better and more things in settings, just too much bloatware- but this is not connected).
This new one is closing to ios unfortunately- less and less customization.
More unfortunately all roms now are n7 ports- great pure n5 roms all discontinued...
So would the note 5 get more software love from Samsung now that note 7 is gone??? I really want that grace UX on my note 5. Might as well stick to it till better version of note 5 comes out..
I don't wanna get s7 edge. Don't seem like good enough jump

I personally think that in a situation like this the FCC sound have tested the replacement phones before they were allowed to replace them and this time test them right.
"Samsung" is POS.
I predict the Note 8 will launch with the S8. Either that or there will be a dual release of the S8 with a rebranded Note.
Now is the time for a rival company like Sony, HTC or even Huawei to jump in.

In an optimistic and ideal world, yes. The Note 5 is the "lastest" Note device and they should give it all the updates Note 7 should had until a new one arrives. But it's Samsung. They're already promoting the S7 as a Note 7 replacement, and letting the Note 5 out in the cold. They will not update the Note 5, they'll focus on a newer Note iteration (or a revised Note7) and bring all the support on those devices. I'm a proud Note 5 owner, I'd love to see newer updates for it, but i'm pretty sure that Samsung will not give us more support than what we actually have. S7 users? Probably they'll have additional months of support, but us? I'm not sure.
I agree with galaxynote2. Samsung will forget of all the pervious note devices and focus on relaunching another note 7 replacement. I have to hand it to Samsung though. I had version 1 and version 2 of the note 7 for about 45days or so and I have to admit it they really hit the nail on the head with this one. I was the best device Samsung ever made. It's too bad it was plagued with battery issues. I love using my note 5 but I sure do miss the note 7. Sorry for getting off topic. Lol just wanted to share a bit of my experience.
Sent from my SM-N920T using XDA-Developers mobile app
Sorry for my bad english I'm from Germany I think if the Note5 will get more updates because the Note7 was a catastrophe, the S6 will get more updates either because the Note 5 is basically the Note version from the S6. But it's a little bit unrealistic haha what do you think ?
If Samsung is smart, they will put all their resources into figuring out what exactly went wrong with the Note7. Remember, they haven't been able to replicate the issue at all, which leads me to believe that it's not a battery issue alone.
The name "Note" is dead, but not the phone. It'll come back rebranded as something else.

Just wondering if any current Note 7 users are here. I'm a Note 7 user looking to have a forum community again, so if development is compatible I'll hopefully have a nice place to stay.
