Does the Essential Phone have aptX? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

I'm wondering if the PH-1 has support for aptX over Bluetooth. The spec page does not mention this.

It doesn’t .

Thanks for the confirmation!

does it have a comparable codec that's lossless or low in that regard?

Any update? I have aptx on my Oneplus One and would hate to have audio quality go down moving to the Essential. My headphones are Tone Platinum.

Man this phone is turning out to be a disaster, no aptx??? Even at $450, they might need another price drop, geez.

The majority of devices don't.

Once Android O or LineageOS is released publicly, you should be able to install the aptX and aptXHD codecs via root or recovery.

does the oreo beta support aptX now?

Android O supports Aptx, you can't find these options on Nougat.

The ph1 doesn't support it but they're looking at it apparently

aptX worked with my Anker Soundbuds Curve, at least it seemed to. Unlike when I connect to my car, the aptX didn't automatically change in the Dev Options area when I was listening on the headset. Sound quality was good, but it's Bluetooth, so still noticeably not wired.

Essential said in their most recent AMA today that aptX is NOT supported even in the Oreo beta but they're working on it.

This. Also they said it's more of a licensing issue than a hardware/software issue.

Yes, aptX is nothing but a codec. Purely software, but has to be licensed from Qualcomm. Plenty of devices use aptX even without Qualcomm processors (like Huaewi phones running HiSilicon chips and Samsung phones with Exynos chips).

I am really hoping it is supported in the final version of Oreo for Essential, licensed if necessary. Just started using my new Bluetooth headphones today, listening to FLAC, and had a few drops during some songs. I syncing some of the same songs to my HTC 10 tonight and will try to see if I can get an apt-X connection going tomorrow with the HTC and compare the results a bit. I really, really want to keep my beautiful Essential Phone, with its clean, stock OS and dialer that puts HTC to shame. I am not an audio expert, but I am sensitive to hearing new details or lack of...like I can't stand the compression of satellite radio. I wonder if Essential would have to license LDAC (Sony)?

Answer call and talk through wear device

Hi, I was wondering if it is (or could be) possible to use the watch mic to talk in a phone call and use the headphones to listen to the person on the other side.

I dont think that would be possible at least not until the bluetooth headset update goes through. since theres no headphone jack on the devices.

Oh, no, what I mean is talk through the watch mic and hear through headphones attached to the phone (assuming the headphones don't have mic of course).

Do not Google HotWatch.... They are a complete mess and you may never get the watch you paid for. Constant lies, misdirection, and broken promises.
I use smart watch witch a headset or earplugs
I've heard that they now sell headphones with a built in mic!! Technology is awesome. The rumor on the street is that wireless headphones will be a thing soon.

My AKG headphones specially built for listening to music and dj use don't have mic, that's why I'm asking.
I'm very interested in this too!
I think the Samsung Gear can do this, but that's Tizen not sure about anything else.
I think it would be wise to invest into a watch with mic and speaker and wait for possible Android Wear update that would allow to make/answer calls this way. But I have not found any info regarding this.
Anyone?
Or even easier, would it be easier to achieve talking into the watch but hearing the other party from the phone speaker? Like let's say you're doing dishes or fixing something and can't pick up your phone at the moment but just turning your wrist wouldn't be a problem
They should have that option in next update. Although I think I saw an xposed module or an app that let you launch the calls directly though the phone speakers so it might work for you.
futuristic
certainly is a nifty feature, although i don't think its possible yet, it will definitely be coming next year
Gear S will have this since it's a stand alone device not a commission. Similar to the omate truesmart which was a nice little device that ran full android.

I'm searching for 2 weeks and i haven't found nothing. I think we have to wait Big G for an update that u can choose if u want to speak trought phone or thought watch.
Or we have to wait a good developer to support for made an root app or an xposed module or something like that i don't know.
We have to wait a long time for now.
why you don't want to use watch phone to talk directly ?
they don't have microphone built-in ? i am sorry i haven't
used it ,that is why i asked .but as i knew ,smart watch
can answer the call ,they should be not problem with talking
and listening through it ,shouldn't it ?

It actually supports it. Confirmed it for myself while i had a G5+. Audio quality overall is great, either wired or using BT.
Awesome! Thanks for the reply.
just wanted to chime in with some proof. checked my bluetooth log with wireshark. screenshot in the attachment.

aptX is indeed supported and enabled by default.

FM Radio?

True but I live across the border from Detroit and a lot of Detroit stations are blocked using streaming radio.

The one time I definitely need FM radio is at the gym. A lot of gyms allow you to watch different channels by tuning in to different FM channels to watch TV while working out. I use Bluetooth wireless ear buds, and luv'em. I would like the option of tuning in with my phone (built-in antenna) and then bluetoothing to the ear buds. I know, so old-skool... get with the times... how would you achieve the same results? Any dongles/etc that would do the trick? Thanks in advance!

That actually never works. On devices that do actually have FM Radio, they won't allow you to connect to a normal Bluetooth device (like headphones) when FM Radio is active. Low-Energy devices such as smartwatches aren't affected by this.
Note that no phone has an integrated FM antenna; any phone with an FM tuner requires wired headphones to act as an antenna

I got the ZTE Maven 3 from Best Buy for $8. It seems to have a radio tuner. I'm sure most of the people here wouldn't consider using this super low end smartphone as their regular phone but using it for music, without a sim, seems to work well. For just over $20, I have a music player with 32 gigs for music.. It's only got 8 gigs internal storage, which is mostly occupied out of the box but thankfully it has a card slot.

Music through USB DAC not working

I've been using my Dragonfly Red with a USB OTG cable on my Nexus 6P with the app USB Audio Player Pro.
On the OnePlus 5 the app does not recognise any audio device.
Shouldn't it work with this phone too?
works just fine with my oppo ha-2se, all music apps... even usb audio player pro.
Turned off the phone and plugged in the DAC before turning it back on and now it works.
I have the same issue with mine but with a Sound Blaster E5.
I tried what you did and had no luck on my end.
So, I reached out to OnePlus' support as it was working with other phones and they recognized there is indeed an issue. For now, my ticket has been escalated to a higher level for addressing the issue for a future update but haven't got a response yet from them.
If the situation gets a revelant update, I'll post it here.

No, it isn't, then that's not your problem. I still get connection problems when I plug in the headphones when the phone is running for a few hours without reboot, in that case, a reboot solves it.

So far, my ticket only got escalated to level 2 but no answer back yet. I will send a reply just to bump it up again so I don't get forgotten.
I know for sure that the E5 is not the issue. It's programmed the way it is supposed to be programmed for Android using Google's standards. The issue is on OnePlus' side. I have tried other USB DACs and none have worked. I don't know how it was possible for the OP to make the dragonfly works only by plugging it in before boot because my friend's dragonfly never connected using that method on mine.
I remember back on my Note 3 that some third party ROMs weren't compatible with USB audio. So I'm guessing that OnePlus just never thought of testing that out and making sure it's working.

Me neither. I'll ask them what's up with that. It's been like three updates that they had the logs about it and it is STILL not there.
How do you think I feel?
I have a $1200 Woo Audio WDS DAC and it didn't work. Had to temporarily buy a Google Pixel while I wait for OP to fix it.
I'm using Companion One as USB audio device and is working fine. Tested with USB Audio Player Pro and Neutron player

Still talking with them on the support ticket. They're trying to push the fault on Creative's side but I already talked to them beforehand and their product uses known standards that does not require to be tweaked for each specific devices (like, standard protocols are standards usually to ease compatibility, right?) so, the technical support discussion is still going on on my end. Honestly, this is frustrating.
Don't flame me if this is stupid! My Dragonfly Red didn't work until I found that in Settings/Advanced, "OTG storage" was disabled by default. Enabled, and dac was seen right away.

It doesn't matter whether the earphones are stock Samsung however they won't work using the Type C port, they have to be used in the 3.5mm jack.

None of the US Variants are FM Radio compatible, the bigshots lean on Samsung not to add any features which divert a user from their revenue generators, ie streaming audio, single sim. Could be software and/or hardware restrictions. Either way it truly sucks!
