Double tap to wake? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Anyone know how to get that on this phone? Didn't realize it wasnt part of the OS... Been on a pixel and didn't realize it was specific to that phone...

You would need to put it in a ROM (if/when available from the XDA community) or use an app. I miss the feature too but was expecting it as the Pixel was as close as you could get to stock Android minus a few of Google's "extra" touches. lol There is always a possibility that Essential will add it themselves... fingers crossed. lol
Personally I've had no luck with apps in the past so I'll leave that one up to you.
If it helps at all there is a lift to view notifications that is a halfway that is baked into stock android. It's located in the Settings > Display > Gestures > Lift to check phone

Thanks, I don't care for lift to view tho, and yes I knew roms could have it, we need a few more things to be released I believe for that to happen tho...
Was hoping there was an app... Didn't realize that that was one of the "extras" that Google put in there...

You can also press the power button once to wake to see notifications without having to lift the phone.

Just got done reading the Reddit posting with the essential team and Andy Rubin a few minutes ago. While I can't link the exact post one of the Essential team members pointed out they are looking into things like the double tap to wake gesture. They didn't say they were going to do it but it seemed like they were insinuating that we should "keep our eyes out"... Hopefully they do and we can get our missed features back!

They seemed pretty responsive on that AMA, I do hope we get this and other subtle features.

Double tap to wake needs to be baked into a rom; no app is going to be able to provide that -- especially if the phone isn't root.
And this feature certainly isn't a Pixel exclusive. I've had double tap to wake on my 1+1. And it's bake into my LG X Charge. Frankly, I do admit that I was shocked to fine out the PH1 didn't support double take to wake. That's fracking completely idiotic. Essential bombed in so many areas where it missed 'essential' features of any modern flagship smart phone.
Really hope this feature is baked into future updates from Essential.

Yeah, I had double tap to wake on my HTC One M8 years ago. And ended up disabling it because of pocket wakes in my pants (I put the screen side facing my leg in my right front pocket). Skin is skin, and a thin cotton pocket liner still allows conductivity to the screen from your leg.
The problem was even worse because I don't like lock screens, when I wake my device I want it to be ready, not yet another swipe. So when it woke in my pocket, as it went on bumping against my leg, all kinds of crap happened, from pocket dialing to taking pictures of my junk (with flash!) to ordering a purse on Amazon.

Woah! Capacitive Buttons!

Anyone notice that when you touch a capacitive button that the actual light turns off behind that single one? I'm running CM7 B25 Nightly- haven't tested it from stock. I just thought that this was awesome and also hard to notice. Or, eve, maybe my phone is junk and broken.

Does not happen on Stock, Bionix(curent ROM), CM7alpha2, or Modaco r3 as far as I remember. I can restore backups of each of those ROMs to confirm. Lights stay solid as can be.
However, if you like the "feature," I wouldn't consider the phone defective.
EDIT: I am wrong. They do, but it's exceptionally subtle and I had to jab the phone next to my eye to see it. Very cool, in retrospect.

they all do that... Nice touch to the phone I think. Little barely noticable things like that are neat....

I'm running the same build and mine do this as well; I think they probably did on stock firmware too. Kind of cool, but mostly goes unnoticed for obvious reasons.

If they can be controlled independently, than I think we have a prospect of notification LED's. These would work great.

I've run stock since the day I bought it, and on my phone the capacitative buttons have always responded to a press by shutting off the light behind the button activated.

OH SHI--it's very subtle. I just grabbed my phone and stuck it next to my eyeball to see the lights. You're right, they do go off for the splittest of second and you'd really have to be looking in order to see it.
Sorry @OP for misinforming.

Yes, they do this. This is also why they go black for upwards 10 seconds at a time on their own with the common phantom home/back button issue many are experiencing.

Mine are doing that. I'm stock.

Wow cool, just noticed it. Stock and root online.

Capacity buttons turning off per press is cool.
I also think one of the coolest things about the Nex S (and of Gingerbread) is the two finger slide show you can perform in the Gallery albums. Just place two fingers on any album and slide them apart. Neat effect.

That's a feature of stock Android 2.2 Gallery app. That was there on the Nexus One.

This is a cool feature. Like wesbalmer says, it could lead to replacing the NOLED app for notifications! If I hold any of these buttons the light also stays off until I let go.
Not many people will notice this feature coz when you press a capacitive button your finger covers it

This feature was already available on sgs froyo 2.2... Just noticed it now though!

but usually our fingers are way to big and wide to really notice the special effects
i had to use my tippy tip of my finger to be able to appreciate the effect, else i'd have missed it as every single hour i spend with the phone

this will be way more cooler than the track ball (if only if it has colors as well).
then we might be able to even do like knight rider style.

I really love this feature on the phone. So much that i have found myself doing it on my Nexus 7 and other devices thinking they'll wake too. Nope! Have any of you been knocking other things around? he

With so many other people that do not have a G2, they seemed to be concerned over the buttons on the back. with knock-on I really do not use the buttons on the back unless I need to reboot.

If you hack the N7 and if there are any PGM kernels available for it, you can have essentially the same thing (I think PGM uses a swiping action rather than knock knock, but its the same principle)

I rarely use the power button on the back, I love the knock on feature!

Theres been kernels since when I had an Htc Evo that had the slide to awake feature, couple of kernels for the One have it along with a knock on and off feature but it has a very small sweet spot, still it was the only thing that kept me sane since I had to strain and fumble my One to get to the power button. The most reliable method was the logo to sleep and awake, you had to actually press down just above the Htc logo and half the time you would end up hitting the application drawer icon. I didn't care for the swipe over the capacitative keys function.
G2 you can knock on and off anywhere which is what sets this function apart, yes you can tap up top on the status bar to have it work every time otherwise you just need to get your timing down on the double knock elsewhere. I love this feature from LG, it just makes sense regardless of where the power key is located but honestly I find myself using the power key sometimes just because I like the way it feels, its one of the best buttons I've ever pushed lol for lack of a better word.

The knock on has worked for my about 99% of the time and I haven complaints. At most I tap a third time and never use the power button other then to reboot.

i was actually at barnes and nobles earlier getting my niece a cheap nook tablet to use and tried to knock on the display model as im so used to it now. the clerk was looking at me funny so i had to pull out the phone and show her lol

Knock-on and it's counterpart Knock-off are a very convenient feature that I'm confident to say is the MOST convenient method of turning on a phone as of September 2013. If other companies don't follow suit in either a very similar fashion or something better, I would be surpr..... No, I'm sure other companies will do something very similar. It's really that good. Only thing I can imagine would be superior is having the phone read my thoughts. Err, wait!

I can only think of one con of the knock on feature. I find that if I put my hand in my pocket or handle the phone without the intention of turning it on, sometimes part of my hand hits the screen twice and it will randomly turn on in my pocket or while in my hand. Not a big deal, I'm sure some software tweaks could fix the sensitivity.

If the phone is in the pocket the proximity sensor should still notice it's covered and knock on wouldn't work. At least that's the premise.

I have the exact same problem..
Not really when it's in the pocket but sometimes when I unmount my device from the car mount and put it in my pocket, I hold it with my thumb on the screen, leave the car and then dump it into my pocket. With my thumb on the screen, the screen turns on. The screen is especially sensitive since it's just been unplugged from the car charger.
This sucks, coz then it uses the capacitive screen sensor instead of the gyro sensor. It's not knockON. It's more like touchON.
Really hope someone or LG will come up with the tweaking of this.

I wanted to keep the M8, and I couldn't for these reasons.

I used the M8 and S5 side by side for over a week. I really wanted to keep the M8, but I couldn't. Does the following drive anyone else a bit crazy? Are there solutions to some of these issues I'm simply not aware of?
Basic inputs:
It actually takes longer to use the M8 for basic inputs, turning the device on, and turning it off. The Samsung turns on a bit faster with just pushing the home button. Fingerprint scanner unlocks more quickly. Side power button is far superior.
Double tap on the M8 is NOT perfect. Neither is holding the device in landscape and hitting the volume key to activate the camera (doesn't work on the first try about 30%). Double tap takes you to the first lock screen. Then you have to slide the icon of what you want to use and input your pin. This can be mitigated by utilizing swipes instead of double tap. It's still not faster.
Buttons:
I often found myself constantly hunting for the onscreen buttons on the M8. The empty HTC bezel throws you off. It's very hard to have muscle memory when you have a big empty row where you think the buttons are. It also takes a moment for the buttons to simply appear. S5 doesn't have this issue due to the hardware home button.
Screen Off:
However often we turn the screen on, a lot of us are also turning it off. It takes longer to turn the screen off on the M8 than it does the S5. Every time I turned the M8 off with one hand it required maneuvering the device in a way that made me fear dropping it because the power button is on top and the device is long. I generally used my other hand to hit the power button just for that reason. That's not necessary on the S5.
Screen on with Music:
I LOVE the M8 speakers. I love playing music on this device around the house, while I'm in the shower, etc. If I am playing music on the M8 and have the device on the counter, and I want to change a song, it's not designed to register a doubletap when laying flat. With the S5, I hit the home button and it brings the screen up. It takes significantly longer to either find a way to hit the top power button or repeatedly tap the screen until it registers on the M8.
Speed:
In day to day use, after disabling bloat on the S5, the devices are equally as snappy. In fact, the S5 is more accessible for the reasons mentioned above. That's all that matters, because all of us here are capable of tinkering and optimizing.
Everyone wants to talk about microseconds worth of lag, what about basic functions, like turning the screen off. It's little things like that, things I do often, which should be taken into consideration when you talk about how long you have to wait for things between devices. If we are going to argue about tenths of a second, these things matter.

I wouldn't have a Samsung phone due build quality they feel too plastic, I have had my m8 for only a couple of days, coming from the one x and although the phone is bigger I find that it feels better to hold and use.

On a side note my Note 3 had lag when pressing home button to wake the phone up, as much as double tapping the screen, it would be nice to get double tap without needing movement as that would help for skipping songs, but I wouldn't say it was a major issues, all the other positives make up for it imo.

I'm actually curious if there are any fixes for my issues, it's what made me choose the S5.
Is there an easier way to turn off the screen than hitting the top power button?
Is there an easier way to turn on the screen when the device is flat?

Rooted then yes, not rooted then no.
Look you obviously love Samsung's due to the home button, maybe you should post this in the S5 forum, makes more sense!

If I double tap my screen when flat it wakes the device. To solve having to use the power button to sleep. Then change the screen of time.

Just give it a little roll on the curve by touching an edge. Then double tap. It literally takes milliseconds. I use my middle finger to tap the edge of the phone and my index finger to double tap.

I found that repeatedly tapping the device would wake it up. Maybe I was making it roll slightly. Is there a way to wake or sleep the device with the volume button?

There is a lot that I liked about the M8. Specifically, the metal body over plastic. I agree, the S5 is not enjoyable to hold. It was not an easy decision. I felt the HTC was worth $600.00. I don't feel that way about the S5 at all, and that bothers me.
Believe it or not, I root for HTC over Samsung. I'm hoping they are around for an M9, I have a feeling that's going to be a very special device.

All of those problems aren't even big... Turning the device on and off is far quicker than any of the Samsungs I have ever owned. I played with the s5, and TouchWiz is STILL too laggy compared to sense. I turned off double tap to wake, because HTC did one thing wrong... No seperate options for all gestures. As for on screen? I prefer it that way... Physical buttons have more of a chance to fail than soft keys.

I use xpose with gravity box and I hold menu button to sleep and sweep up on screen gestures to unlock screen if u use the phone how Ur instructed to use it u won't have a problem Galaxy S5 vs HTC M8 (One): http://youtu.be/u0q362kb3DA

Exactly, if the music player was open the entire time when the screen shut itself off then he only needs to swipe up from the bottom and then it takes you straight to the music player again then tap next for the next song, pretty easy really.
The landscape mode for the camera...You have to do that within a certain amount of time as far as I know? I've done it a couple of times already and haven't once missed it, if anything the camera just takes a while to open. However that is NOT the case if the camera is actually already opened in the recent apps.
I don't really understand the screen off though, I have no problem to turn it off when I DO want to turn it off, else I just generally leave it to shut off within a set amount of time.
Oh well to each his own I suppose. The OP clearly wanted the S5 more and went out of his way to find "faults" for the M8 so that he can, at least in his own mind, justify the change.
I'm happy with my M8 though :victory: Awesome phone, first HTC I ever had and I'm glad I decided on buying it. IF only I went for the M7 last year when I "considered" it, instead I chose to stick with my Galaxy S3 and trusty Nokia N9

Is phone comparison against policy? I think they should be allowed in the general section. In the At&t note 2 section they have a note vs any other/upgrade thread. I can see if it is in the Dev section

Samsung lost me with Knox and slow updates. Yeah HTC has a unlock Dev which clearly states you void warranty but at least it's upfront. Only reason why I got this was because it had GPE. I only left the nexus 5 because I was unimpressed with battery. Amazing how a slightly better battery makes a world of difference

It's not exactly fair for you to say what I did or did not want.
I actually wanted the M8, and would have chosen it but for the reasons I stated. These are issues that I encountered over and over and over. They weren't imaginary. They are/were deal breakers. I would love to not have to root the device in order to potentially have a reasonable way to turn the screen off one handed.
Are they small issues? In the overall scope of phone ownership, yes, I suppose so. I think that's more a testament to how good the M8 is in many respects. For example, notice that it was not the camera that made my decision. It was one of the little things.

I think it was though... The fact that you compared what you found to be wrong with something that does not have those same "faults" already shows your justfications at work, I've been there...Not hating on you because of it though, your money, your device, your choice. I'm not going to tell you NOT to do something.
You can't turn off screen fast enough, I actually want screen to be on for just a little longer, let it shut itself off when the phone is not in use.
You can't get to music fast enough, I actually figure that if I already listened to 15seconds of that nonsense song, another 2seconds isn't going to kill me, I'll change to the next song on my time. Better yet, why not remove that crap song completely that way it can go on and do its own thing playing music that I actually want to listen to.
You can't turn screen on fast enough, one swipe from the bottom up is fast enough for me to get to the app I was already using(Be it, hangouts, bbm, music doesn't matter).
Like I said though, to each his own, the things that bother you won't be the same as the things that bother me. I can understand it though so... Good luck :good::highfive:

As has already been stated, phone comparisons are against the rules and therefore such threads inevitably get closed down. The reason for this rule is that they often spout into arguments between people who prefer different phones but can't convey their message without it turning into an argument.

While I'm here, I also had to do a clean up which shouldn't have been needed. Although it does prove my point about arguments in such threads, it still shouldn't have happened here.
If you think a thread should be closed, report it to us (the moderation team) and we'll pass judgement.
If you don't like someone's thread or their opinions, why bother commenting? If there's something I don't like I simply stay away from it. It's not difficult to do.
