[Firmware] Updates and Info - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello everyone.
Development of ROMs and mods for this awesome device is currently on fire. Threads are filled with enthusiastic fellas and different queries.
But one thing has become very repititive, that is, about the firmware.
First of all, read about what firmware is.
Firmware refers to the operating system that controls how a smartphone operates. It is called firmware rather than software to highlight the fact that it is so closely tied to the hardware of the device. Firmware updates are provided by a company to fix bugs or provide new functionality.
Firmware is also found in other electronic devices like remote, DVD players etc.
In case of Redmi Note 4, MIUI 8 is based upon Marshmallow and Nougat both. Some folks have got the stable update of MIUI 8 based on Nougat. When a person with MIUI based on Marshmallow installs Custom ROM based on Nougat, then he might face some problems like fingerprint sensor not working and network being poor. To avoid that, all the ROM developers have included a firmware zip in their respective posts which should be flashed before the ROM so as to avoid the various bugs. This firmware zip has the required blobs which are crucial for the interaction of the software with the hardware.
If you are already on a Beta release or stable release of MIUI based on Nougat, then you don't need to Flash the firmware file.
Now some random points to ponder:
1. If you are on any specific firmware version, you can Install a newer version anytime you want, provided you know the bugs or any hazard related to it from the source.
2. Firmware zip can be installed even after you have installed the ROM. Just reboot to TWRP>clear Dalvik and Cache>Install>Flash firmware zip>Reboot.
3. If you are already on any Nougat based ROM, you don't need to Flash firmware again, while you are free to do so, but you don't need to.
Now below are the links to some of the known versions of the firmware zip files.
1. Included in the Official AEX post:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=817550096634766008
2. Included in the Official Lineage OS post:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=817550096634766008
3. Included in the SlimROM post:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=817550096634766008
4. Extracted from Global Dev of MIUI 9:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bx4Y-DsaLqEUQ1p4VnZxbW1fMjQ/view
So, this is all you need to know about the firmware thing. You just Install any of these above mentioned and you are good to go. As you can see both AEX, LOS and SlimROM posts include the same firmware, its clear its required for the transition only.
If you have any other query, feel free to drop a comment. Recommendations and improvements are very well welcome.

Nice.

Will flashing the firmware solve my no signal problem? I m on AEX and my phone loses signal and 4-5 reboot to get it back.

Assuming you didn't Flash it before flashing the ROM, you can Flash the firmware now. Just download the one stated above. Reboot to TWRP>Clear Cache and Dalvik>Flash firmware>Reboot.
A clean flash is recommended though.
Report back.

What do you mean Indian Verizon ?
Why did you flashed Verizon version, instead of this you could have done fastboot XT 1550 6.0 or 6.0.1 Indian version factory firmware and rooted.

I read his reply many times and now I understand, he was saying 'version'. If you do a typo verison instead of version, the autocorrect maybe is replacing it with verizon (I don't use auto correction).

Is this stock rom with VOLTE support is rooted ?
What are the steps to be followed before flashing this rom?
How can i back up all data and app?
If this back can be used to restore every app with data after flashing this stock ?

Hi,
if you are currently on Any CustomROM, and want to flash back to Stock 6.0.1 !!
please use the Guides, of a guy named -LOST
you cannot Flash the ZIP as customRoms, you need to have PC inorder to follow those steps,
what i do before changing ROMS:
install TitaniumBackup, and apply Filter ( user apps+data) , then Backup all those to my SD CARD, then after changing ROM i would again install TITANIUM BACKUP app, and RESTORE by setting location - SD CARD.
NOTE: please format your memory card to PORTABLE, if your memorycard is now as INTERNAL.
if you have so many doubts, there is whatsapp group for IndianUsers. give your PHNO: i will say them to add you.. there are so many people who can help you there :highfive:

If you on pure stock ROM you can root using root guide posted in device forum and the one which you mentioned stock ROM is " optimized " version of stock ROM which is rooted but it doesn't support VoLte.

Hi, Thanks bro..
Here are my current situations..
I have tried rooting using Moto tool, found in this forum. But it was disconnecting frequently and failed to root. Then read through this forum and successfully unlocked the boot loader, installed TWRP and finally tried to flash super su.May be due to the incompatibility of files i have used, my moto g 3 went to boot loop..
Searched through this forum and found STOCK_6.0.1_optimized_MOTOG3_Ver1.0.zip and installed it using TWRP and now My moto g 3 is booted successfully and rooted. i have used jio 4Gvoice app for calling two days.Today, after i cleared cache using TWRP, VOLTE flag flashed up on notification bar , the app not able to make call, instead it re direct to dialer, not able to make call.
I am a beginner in rooting, and want to stick with stock rom now. So i searched for the Stock Rom with VOLTE support and found this thread.
So my Question is XT1550_OSPREY_RETASIA_DS_2GB_6.0.1_MPI24.107-55_cid7_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip mentioned in this thread supports VOLTE or Not,also rooted and optimized one?
If yes, these are the steps i would follow to flash this Stock rom.
1) Back up all user app and data using titanium backup to my sd card
2) Put stock rom XT1550_OSPREY_RETASIA_DS_2GB_6.0.1_MPI24.107-55_cid7_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip in SD card
3) Install the above zip using TWRP and clear cache
4) Restore data from Titanium back up.
Could you please check and validate these are correct or not

The firmware file (xt1550 retail india .xml.zip one) is the official firmware and supports VoLTE. Follow the fastboot flashing guide to flash the firmware.

you should not flash with TWRP,
those files are having seperate process, and MOTO UTILITY isnt Good at ROOTING, it can push ROOT file for you in to Internal storage, but it wont Root..
1) i am using STOCK, (the zip you mentioned above), i installed TWRP, then i ROOTED, then INSTALLED xposed also..
2) Volte on JIO works fine even after doing all these things..
3) to install the STOCK ZIP , you must have a PC, dont use MOTO utility, because it has a CHUNK FILE missing..
for the process of installing STOCK..
you must UNZIP the full ZIP folder in to ADB+ FASTboot folder ( this is the first thing you must do )
that should look like this : View attachment 3918160
then follow the process
http://forum.xda-developers.com/2015-moto-g/general/guide-fastboot-flashing-factory-t3187750
please dont use UTILITIES, and make sure you backup all and lookout for SD card formatted as external/portable. :highfive:

Fix for VOLTE Marshmallow MIUI

Last night one of my friend told me about this. So i tried and found it working. All credits to him for discovering this, i am just sharing.
HIS MIUI TOPIC IS HERE Go and support him.
He has posted fastboot method there that is a bit simpler, use that if you like. Here i have posted recovery flash-able zip.
Things required:
1. Redmi note 3 with bootloader unlock and TWRP recovery
2. Any Marshmallow MIUI rom
3. Firmware zip
Steps:
1. Unlock bootloader officially/unofficially and flash twrp by fastboot.
2. Download the firmware zip and rom and place them in internal/external sd.
3. Flash the firmware zip first and then the rom.
4. Reboot.

Put your phone in fastboot mode, then connect your device and Run Flash.bat
BTW: As per the original posted: This will work on MIUI ROMS tested in Beta MM version, EPIC MM and Ported MM from Kate, and I guess this should work on AOSP roms since the modem files are from AOSP base, this fix won't work with CM13 ROMS since the base is different and we are working on it to fix, so stay tuned!!

Is this working with slim aosp based rom
Not working for me...
I flashed firmware.zip then rom and then lazyflasher zip to decrypt boot.img without wiping anything
This will not work. Firmware files aren't same from original zip files in MIUI Forum thread and as you can see, only needed to flash Modem + DSP file and not entire firmware-update folder. To get this fix working you need 5.1.1 Modem and my modded adspso.bin. Raaj52 said that this files are from 6.0 AOSP but if you look into new replies, he said this is 5.1.1 modem and I modded adspso.bin file to get working 5.1.1 Modem in 6.0.1 without fluence and video recording issues.

So before flashing a nougat rom, instead of flashing abhisheks firmware or strix firmware, shall I flash this or what?

I updated from KitKat to Nougat(RR 7.1.2 by devharsh) and I am not experiencing any issues.
If you are still on KitKat...I say go for it.
I did that once, because I thought that banking apps were easier to use on a phone, but old android is just soooo bad, I just couldn't stand it.
I tried running 4.4 for a while, but every time there was no signal, it just shut down. I tried upgrading to official 5.*, and it became extremely laggy. Tried different versions, but nothing worked better.
You can try it, but I don't recommend going back if you are already using 7.1 for a while, because you just get so much used to all of the functions.
If you want to try, first you have to get stock recovery because stock rom won't run from trwp.
I did it with the flashing utility, where you have to connect your phone and make it go to service mode.

No your have not update your twrp really
Sent from my LEX720 using xda premium
As MclBenner said, you need to update your TWRP : https://twrp.me/leeco/leecolepro3.html
Try redownload and copy the rom again to your internal memory. That may help
i was also getting error 7 when trying flash rom's as well.
I tried updating TWRP as instructed above and continued to get twrp error 7 when i tried to flash any rom.
I then noticed that my error was based on the modem baseband date being wrong.
So I just re-ran the 20s update via eui's update utility and rebooted and was able to flash rom's again.
I hope that helps somebody.
I don't believe the problem was the TWRP version because I re-flashed it twice and the error 7 persisted

I had to flash the 20s firmware from codeworks thread in my case the error 7 was because I had the wrong modem date installed.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/le-pro3/development/le-eco-pro-3-x727-twrp-backup-clean-t3727920
Maybe you can restore that backup from twrp. I've used it before

I'm not sure but I just flashed a custom ROM over that backup and everything just worked for me.
I never tried to use it so I don't know. Maybe you have some leftover stuff that you didn't get wiped.
I'd try to start over now that you have the ability to flash ROM's again.

Respectfully, there is no 21s firmware, go back one page and read.
This error 7 is the most common issue on the Le Pro 3 forums and the question has been answered literally a thousand times.
Error 7 is resolved by updating Twrp.
If you cant update Twrp, update your firmware.
Do a Google search and type : "All in One Tool Leeco Pro 3"
You can use it to resolve all of the possible issue variables, so download the newest version of Twrp for your device.
If you have a ZL1 then download the Twrp for the ZL1 if you have a ZL0 then download the TWRP for the ZL0 : I suspect that this is your actual issue: wrong Twrp.
Again get your files together: Twrp, Rom, Gapps, Magisk and at your current stage of using Roms the All in One tool is the best and easiest option. The All in One Instructions are on the Main All In One Tool XDA page.
Sim Card Card issues are often resolved after flashing the correct firmware.
