If you could improve on the phone... - Honor 8 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

Just thought to have a thread where I will try to compile all suggestions and feedback regarding the phone -- be it hardware or software (EMUI). Hope you guys think this is a good idea...
compiling a list...
1. Customisable notification lights -- whether to turn on notification LED for charging, type of colour for different events, etc... (see OP)
2. Separate volume for notification. (see OP)
3. Remove the CD-Drive where HiSuite is stored (see OP)
4. Default USB mode does not seem to work. enabled it on Develop options and set MTP as default but still, it goes to charging mode only on my phone (see OP)
5. Option to disable auto beauty mode when using front facing cam. i'm one of those that don't like beauty mode. or at least a settings where we can turn it on/ off as default. (see OP)
6. Option to manually change screen resolution to 1080p or even 720p. right now, it's automatic and comes under power savings options. (see OP)
7. Double-tap to wake. (see OP)
8. improve on smart unlock -- paired with my fitness band but the smart unlock behavior is erratic. sometimes does not work. (see OP)
9. Mobile Data stats to track usage needs a major improvement -- ability to change data cycle date. not every data cycle starts on 1st of calendar month. mine starts almost mid month, so this Mobile Data thingy is quite useless in tracking and reminding me of usage. should stick to something simple like what Samsung has got. (see OP)
10. Improve/ Reorganise options in settings. (see OP)
11. No notification when low resolution mode kicks in. Also see point 6 above. (see OP)
12. Improve on volume level, especially when using earphones. Also, an equalizer? (see OP)
13. Themes that does more than just change wallpaper and icons. (see OP)
14. Clicking sound on the power button. (see OP)
15. Charging speed when phone is used should be faster. Currently very slow. (see OP)
16. More improvements on the camera - better overall quality (including in low light) and speed. (see OP) (see OP)
17. More options for selecting network-type (which SIM gets 4G, 3G, 2G only, etc). (see OP)
18. Club honor forum needs some reworking. (see OP)
19. Expand on the menu in Power Button. (see OP)
20. Improve on low-light photography (see OP)
21. Heat issue after prolonged use of camera (4K recording) (see OP)
22. Photo and video using both front and rear camera. I know Samsung has got this and I quite love it. Useful for those still not using selfie stick. Plus, for video and doing livestream, being able to use both can be fun! <-- This seems to be on the new Nokia 8. Even if it's not possible on video, would be nice to see this option for photos.
23. Improve App Twin. Currently only two apps. Would be better if users can just clone any apps. (see OP)
24. Add quick menu on camera editable -- users can customise what they want on the camera apps' quick menu. That way, we can put whatever settings we like. Perhaps HDR. (see OP)
25. More icons/ options for Quick Access. There could be many more options like Auto Sync. (see OP)
26. Allow warranty claims even on rooted devices like OnePlus. (see OP)
27. Enhance the PIN entry screen. (see OP)
28. Allow contact events (like birthdates) to be entered without YEAR. (see OP)

and to kick things off, my own list of suggestions:
1. customisable notification lights -- whether to turn on notification LED for charging, type of colour for different events, etc...
2. separate volume for notification
3. remove the CD-Drive where HiSuite is stored
4. default USB mode does not seem to work. enabled it on Develop options and set MTP as default but still, it goes to charging mode only on my phone
5. option to disable auto beauty mode when using front facing cam. i'm one of those that don't like beauty mode. or at least a settings where we can turn it on/ off as default.

7. double-tap to wake
8. improve on smart unlock -- paired with my fitness band but the smart unlock behavior is erratic. sometimes does not work.
9. that Mobile Data to track usage needs a major improvement -- ability to change data cycle date. not every data cycle starts on 1st of calendar month. mine starts almost mid month, so this Mobile Data thingy is quite useless in tracking and reminding me of usage. should stick to something simple like what Samsung has got.

Your list of suggestions is definitely a good start. IMHO, suggestions 1,2,7 are to be given high priority followed by 5,6 and 8. Regarding 3&4 I have observed the same default action on all my previous OnePlus devices also. May be it's implemented that way I guess.

Number 4 - I had the same behavior on my previous device as well. Moto X Play.

Let's start -
The number of options is settings is huge. It's sort of a mess to find out a particular setting.
The low resolution power saver has no notification about when it lowers the resolution.
The double tap to wake should be there.
Notification light should be customizable.
The volume level through earphones is very low. Also an equalizer is sorely missed.
There is a click noise when pressing the power button. It irks me when the surrounding is silent.
The themes present doesn't change much other than icons and wallpapers. I would like to see themes changing QS panel and settings screen as well.
The charging speed while using the phone is way too low.
The camera quality is good enough but improvement is still desired.

Regular security updates, enough said.

regarding 3 & 4... i do wonder what is the logic for implementing it this way. anyone can share if there's a good reason to do it this way? plus, the settings in Develop Options to set default USB mode does not seem to over-ride this, making the option in Develop Options useless.

Yes, you are coorect. The settings in Developer Options to set default USB mode as MTP does not over-ride this. Don't know why.

Clicking noise... never noticed that till you pointed it out. i guess this is a hardware thing and unlikely to be fixable. but ya, maybe have those soft/ quiet buttons in future.

One more suggestion.Select network mode individually.i mean select 2g/3g/LTE only mode. Now if we select SIM1 for data, the SIM2 automatically change into 2g/3g mode and vice versa.I need 2g only mode for non-data sim

+1 for all the suggestions! If these could be managed, it would be a near perfect phone which ticks all the checkboxes.
Also club honor forum needs a vast update. It doesn't allow to post a new post after saying it is getting reviewed and the whole forum is a mess. Nobody knows what forum is for what and there are no separate sections!

just remembered something else... would be nice if the power button's options can be expanded. i mean, perhaps under Develop Options, we have the ability to add more options such as:
* screenshot
* mute (mute using volume button currently needs 2 press -- one to reduce volume to 0 and then another click to enable MUTE)
* airplane mode

i totally agree. first of all, signing up was confusing. first attempt, i ended up signing for HK account. later, i managed to create another based on correct country -- Malaysia. when i joined the club honor forum, i found it messy as well. and... there was no section on honor 8 Pro. i asked 1-2 members/ mods, but never got any reply.
in the end, came back to XDA instead.

For me, there are two major complaints. Fast charging on this device is a real bummer. It charges incredible slow. Also, I don't like the oversaturated, unnatural looking display.
Battery life and camera are just ok. Over all I'm fine with the phone.

In addition to said improvements, they should start working on an update that supports VoLTE over wider providers. Here in India, there was a problem with Jio VoLTE and the now another company (Airtel ) os going to activate it on their Network. So that should be addressed as well. Including low light photography needs improvement
---------- Post added at 01:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:10 PM ----------
Also I read in the PDF, about the meet up in Chennai, India where discussions were held for feedback, that a hashtag be created for sharing pictures on Instagram. Can I know what the hashtag is?

Regarding the volte support on other networks, it's still some months away but as the volte support is present, I guess it will work automatically on other networks also once they support it.
Low light photography. Yes needs to be improved.
Also on continuous usage of camera, it gets unreasonably hot.

sorry... what do you mean by import HDR to main display? isn't that already done?
also, auto-sync... you disable/ enable it every now and then? or? usually, i set this when i setup my phone -- to determine what needs to be sync-ed and what does not. and then just let it auto-sync...

technically, this phone does not have any Quick Charging tech. it's just regular 2A charging. the phone does not come with Huawei's Fast Charging (like on Mate9) or Qualcomm's QC or even like OnePlus's DASH. but still... full charge within 2 hours, i feel... is OK for a phone with big battery and no Quick Charge tech.
as for un-natural looking display. i dunno... i can't really tell. plus, if anything, i'm am AMOLED fan. but... having said that, i thought the phone has got some display calibration that complies to some standards?
updated: there's this DCI-p3... not sure what that means. maybe later i Google it.

was reading the Nokia8 first impression when i got reminded about this camera feature where you can take a photo with both front and back camera together. in Samsung's case, they have done it quite well. would be nice to see this on our phones.

for this... iinm, i've seen this on Samsung phones too. auto sync option. but, i never really understood why ppl need these. you don't want phone to auto-sync? why not?

just thought to highlight this... hopefully we can compile a list of suggestions/ feedback that our lucky fellows in India can share with honor India.

Swype
Is Swype available on stock fw, if yes how could it be activated?
It's all in the first post! It's kind of like a cut down version, it's a mash up of the samsung keyboard and swype.
I have installed the swype beta, and while on the s3 the swype keyboard height is about a third shorter than other keyboards I still prefer it over the stock.
If you want a real swype experience then your better off applying for the beta, the version in the s3 is very limited.

For some reason the Swype installer doesn't work on mine. When I run it, I get a parsing error.
I'm quite liking the built in Samsung 'swype' feature. But then i'm new to this kind of input, but it's def quicker and more accurate for me than using the standard way. My girlfriend loves Swiftkey on her GSII though and i may try that at some point.
In regards to tips, when in the contact list, you can swipe along the right hand side and flick through the alphabet quicker, as usual, but if you push your finger further left while doing this it will then narrow the search even more.
Hope that makes sense!

After activating it from motion settings, gently double tap on the top of the phone to go to the top of a list, unfortunately it only works in contacts and email. Another thing is that it sometimes needs more than one trial to work!

Must install Light flow from market as well. It uses the LED function of SIII to max. You can customize 8~9 colors for various alerts. e.g i use orange for low battery, red for missed calls, green for missed sms, white for charging, green for full charge, blue for no signal etc.
Although sometimes the charging light doesn't come on when playing around with phone and switching it to sleep mode but hopefully fix will fix this issue.
Must have app though
Enable Palm swipe to capture from Settings -> Motion and show it off to iPhone users...

I managed to get Swype installed on my stock Pebble Blue.
Got Swype Installer & attempted for about 10 times over Wifi before it finally started downloading.
Before that, I kept getting the "Parsing.." error.
There was nothing new / different in my attempts - just had to keep hammering at it to download.
Just found these neat tricks on http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_iii-review-757p3.php
"There's one more trick - you wake the phone (tap the power button or the home key), then press and hold the screen and rotate the phone horizontally. It will unlock and start the camera as soon as it's in the right orientation to snap a photo"
"Shaking the device lets you detect nearby Bluetooth devices, as well as update your email, news or weather apps."

after install and reboot of the phone all suddenly it started to speak if i opened a folder or closed one so i had to remove it for a while lets hope the developer will fix that bug lol
A great alternative!!
Touchpal keyboard is an awesome alternative for swype.
Download it from playstore.
If anyone's phone feels a little sluggish (I know mine doesn't) you could try enabling 2D hardware acceleration to make it a bit more snappy
(settings->developer options->force gpu rendering)
please note this may drain your battery more than usual

[Q] Missing features in Android 5 for Nexus 4?

I did fresh upgrade from KitKat4.4.4 to stock 5.0. I noticed there are a few things missing from previous build:
1. Power menu only have "POWER OFF"!
2. No "silent" option for sound?
3. No "Auto" setting for brightness control?
4. For privacy, I only want to see an app icon showing on status bar of Lockscreen when Notification comes. I do not want to see small pop-up window with content showing up in 5.0.
5. Lockscreen cannot add widget any more, only Camera/Phone can be lauched.
How to re-gain them instead of going back to 4.4.4?
1- Yes, you don't need the others
2- NONE is the new true silent, read up on it or wait for my youtube video to come up explaining a bit about it (Will be up on monday)
3- Auto is gone and replaced by adaptive brightness which is much better (again, video on monday )
4- It's already there in settings, sound & notifications, when device is locked
5- They (Google) removed lockscreen widgets
And Phones are missing the "Add restricted profile" option ...
I want to restrict what apps my kids can run on my phone.
Any idea how to enable that feature?

Sadly its not.
Google has decided that phones only get "multiple users" whereas tablets also gets "restricted profiles".

5. Another one sucks
6. The system is slower on 5.0

[Q&A] Silent mode missing after 5.0 lollipop update on Galaxy S5? Now priority mode.

[Q&A] Silent mode missing after 5.0 lollipop update on Galaxy S5? Now priority mode.
Edit: solution below (4th post). But be cerful for disabling your alarms.
<rant>
I have a Galaxy S5 SM-G900F. As a power user i need to factory reset my phone every half year to keep it running smooth. Since it was time for that anyway, i combined a fresh start with flashing the official polish 5.0 lollipop S5 rom (the updated one
PDA: G900FXXU1BNL7 ). It looks and works great. Ok, more blacks would work better with the amoled screen and it can easily take 2-3 seconds to open the task switcher, which is extra annoying if you have to also use it to jump to another browser tab. But i didn't find any major bugs and i generally love it. But one thing is driving me so crazy I'm considering going back to 4.x and staying there.
WHERE IS THE FRACKIN SILENT MODE?????
Sorry for the caps but that's kind of how i feel. Apparently it's not a bug but a feature. In vanilla, stock android on the nexus and moto g, you have to assign priority people or apps that can disturb you in priority mode. And then there's the "none" mode where your phone is completely silent. But those modes are not there in touchwiz. And people can't get their phones silent on other hardware too. Apparently Google will do a reintroduction of the feature in 5.1. But i don't know what that's worth. It will take ages for Samsung to incorporate and I'm starting to distrust google. With Google maps I'm still missing some features they cut out, such as measuring the direct distance between two points in the app. And they brought back writing to microsd cards with a special api, but i still can't edit word documents in any of the seven office apps I've tried (including several purchased ones).
</rant>
Anyway, I've tried everything i could think of to find silent mode:
* tap the vibrate/sound button in the quick toggles, it only switches between sound and vibrate, silent is gone
* long press power button: sound settings are removed from this menu
* go to settings - sounds and notifications: again there's only sound and vibrate mode. Silent mode is missing.
Please help me. The only workaround i found is to manually set all vibrates to really soft. But where is the silent mode? This is a feature that has been present in phones since before the wheel was invented. Did they really forget it? Or leave it out in purpose?
Silent mode is implemented in priority mode (stupid move by sammy)

Thank you for replying but where can i find this priority mode?
remove me again sorry
Solution
Ok, found it. You mute your phone with priority mode, but that's rather hidden...
WARNING: your alarms will not go off of you set priority mode to none.
open the all toggles: swipe down from the top of your screen with two fingers (or swipe down once and tap the icon in the upper right with three squares and two arrows)
here you see a toggle called all. Set it to none for silent mode
tap the pen icon to edit the layout, long press the all/none toggle and drag it up to put it in your directly accessible toggles
you can go to the settings for priority mode by long pressing the toggle. You can also find it under sound&notifications - interruptions (not called priority mode!!!)

But I think that with "none" mode, even your alarm won't go!

This is not something implemented by Sammy, this is a Lollipop Google feature and sucks.
I had a widget for doing this and the App developer says that there is Nothing he can do
why they did this God Knows
what the heck is wrong with android developers nowadays? I hated this option.
At least silent mode will be back in 5.1
I am on EE and when I upgraded to Lollipop I lost this silient mode like everyone else did. My mate on Virgin also lost it but about a week later he received an update and he gained back this functionality.
There's now an XPOSED module for enabling native silent mode in lollipop
Sent from my SM-G900F
Silent mode is back in BOB7

I'm very confused by this "priority mode" thing. I would really like it simple....I can put my phone on silent at night and have my alarm go off, and still receive ALL notifications while I'm sleeping, but they're silent. Then during the day while I'm at work, leave it on silent, but receive all notifications. I really really don't like that no matter what, silent mode mutes all notifications and alarms. It seems like I have to have it on vibrate in order to have the alarm work. I've googled this so many times and read so many articles, but it still doesn't make sense. Also I couldn't care less what order the notifications are.
who install and active XPOSED module in Rom 5 ?please help me....

Marshmallow update change log

I couldn't find any change log for this update.. So I need your help to make one..
This is the changes that I noticed while using my phone:
* android 6.0 known features: doze, app permission and now on tap.
* notifications toggles UI changes along with new animation.
* lock screen now display network name in the notifications bar.
* new screen off animation (transform to black and white with zoom out)
* emojis: HTC now uses stander Google emojis.(I miss HTC's emojis)
* contact sharing: you can share to contacts directly form the sharing menu (at least for telegram for now)
* notification icons are now smaller.
* adoptable storage: format SD card as internal storage.
* memory setting: new memory setting in settings.
* clear all in notifications drop down.
* new keyboard and Daimler themes.
* HTC calculator removed. Google calculator is here.(it's nicer)
* new drop down menus animation.
* HTC music fixed:while using earpiece, double tap earpiece button will skip to next song.(on lollipop this action will start a call to the last person you called for some weird reason)
* flash light is now accessible from notification toggles.
* new sound controls UI , and priority profiles.
* editing info in people app is now better.
* sweeping up any heads-up notification , will not dismiss it, it will be safe in the notification drop down.
*The "Auto Sleep" mode for the screen timeout is gone. (@adotkdotjh liked that feature)
Please feel free to add any additional changes you have found.

It uses the phone's accelerometer to detect whether it is being used or not. If the phone is moving ever so often while the screen is on, then screen does not turn off since that means the phone is being used (i.e. in your hand). No need to keep touching the screen every 30 seconds to keep the screen on. If the phone has not detected a movement for longer than a minute, then it is not being used, hence the screen turns off.
Very useful for reading long articles.

It sounds like a pretty clever feature..that never been really mentioned a lot, (unlike smart stay from Samsung, even though "Auto Sleep" sounds like a far better, more thought out solution), I wonder why they removed it.
Is there still a Phone-Keyboard with the old Layout?
Attached a Screen.
Regards
This new page:
The sounds are noticeably louder and my media has finer grained volume control now.
Notification and Ringtone volume are now linked and cannot be unlinked. What a major bummer!

I noticed that too. I also noticed that my phone is now a lot smoother than with lollipop using Google Now Launcher. Waiting a few days for the battery life

Option to search apps exists in Google Search settings, also photos can still be saved to SD in camera settings
Yes but now you need to go to individual apps and change storage setting. Previously you could do it from one place

Also in contacts/people app you do not see number of contacts for each account type

Tutorial: Letv Le1s: Reducing battery consumption for non-rooted Le1s

Here are the few tips you could use to reduce the battery consumption for your device. I use it for my Le1s and it helps me, hence I'm sharing it with you.
1) Uncheck "Scanning always available" in WiFi settings.
2) Avoid live wallpapers
3) Use manual brightness feature and uncheck auto brightness
4) Dont need vibration, then switch vibration and hepatic feedback off.
5) Set screen timeout to 15 seconds and increase it if necessary.
6) Switch off the hardware features like WiFi, Bluetooth, gps if not needed
7) Use the battery assistant feature frequently, it helps a lot.
8) Dont use too much of ram consuming widgets
9) Switch off auto-sync and enable it when needed
10) Keep your apps and system firmware updated and to the latest version.
11) Turn off voice commands if not needed, like Google Search commands, Cortana, etc.
12) Dont use app killers or ram optimizers, just swipe away the apps you don't need from the recent menu.
This guide is for people who dont know about the tips. Power users may know about it already.
Note: If you know some more tips, please post it here and I will update this thread with it giving you credits for it.
