Heat - Moto G5S Plus Real Life Review

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Moto G5S Plus stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

It heats too much while charging. Playing any games doesn't seem to affect it much but while charging, the battery temperature soars as high as 42-43.

Only when using it while charging.
Edit* reaches 41C while charging that's not good.

This is issue with all fast charging phones. As there is more power being used while charging these, so they will heat up more.
Here are some tips to prevent overheating on fast charging.

Just curious, why would you be worried about how hot the phone gets when charging?

Why would one not be?! Overheating can reduce battery life. In the worst case, the battery can even explode.

If the phone or the battery is faulty, maybe. Do you think your phone/battery are faulty? Or do you think that you're more familiar with how to build a phone/battery and charge it properly than the engineers at Motorola? Otherwise you're just saying "I think my phone gets hot when it charges" which isn't very useful information.

That's what I wanted to know myself. I had created a separate thread to ask whether other people's phones are also getting this much hot.

True, I'm nowhere near the experts at Motorola. However, your logic is flawed. If we go by it, there would not have been 'any' need of bug-fixes or updates. Bugs are inevitable and that's the reason developers ask for feedback and bug-reports!

Isn't it exactly what the thread is for? I provided my opnions with a screenshot. How it's being perceived is up to the reader.

To be fair, you started with "it's too hot". Anyway, I'm not here to argue! My phone has now turned up and doesn't get all that hot when charging. I'll run it down to 0% and then give it a charge and see if I can get the temperature from the phone. I just took a bunch of test photos, got back from lunch and I now seem to have at least 3 camera-related updates to install so I'll have to shoot a bunch more tomorrow. The camera is by far the worst aspect of this phone which is otherwise very nice indeed!

Yeah. Actually, I was more concerned about that 75 degree celsius because that indeed is hot. However, a friend having the same phone said that his phone never crosses 38-39 degree!
Anyway, give it a try yourself too. And yes, it's because of turbo charging only, as several people mentioned. So, you'll observe the temperature rising up after about 20-30 minutes of putting it on charging.
I also observed that the phone gets appreciably warm if the 'torch' is used while recording video. Tried it on front cam.
I'll appreciate if you too could share the screenshot of the temperature screen on CPUZ app.
Regarding camera updates, I'm not into photography. But I couldn't find any significant change after the updates.

38.5 degrees c (and the phone is in a wallet style case). I'm using the phone at the same time, surfing, listening to music and checking out a bug about audio equalisation I just posted about elsewhere on this site. voltage 4200 mv, ac charger charging (but says turbopower connected on the lock screen). It's been charging for about 20 minutes, from about 35 or 40% charge (despite using it quite a bit today the battery is taking it in its stride. this is only the second time i've charged it).
I'll post back here if it rises to a silly level today or on subsequent charges.

230c sometimes the BGA ICs fall off and I have to open the phone and reball the ICs and flow them back into place
I got my first SGS2 and it was really getting hot especially when streaming movies or playing games etc..i could not touch the back portion where the camera lense was. That phone had a 3g connectivity issue..so i had to return it..anyway while waiting for my usb jig to arrive..i bought another SGS2... using it the same way like my first phone, it never got hot till now..even playing games or streaming movies..it only gets warm and when i checked the battery temp..always showing about 36 to 38 degrees. On first phone, my record temp was 49 degrees and maybe it could have gone higher if i did not shut the phone down and cool it..

Got it to 45C tops, when playing heavy games continuously.
It goes upto 45 for me as well. I felt it very hot just once on the second day after I got it where I feel it went above 45. After that I've been using a cover so I dont notice the heat much and since that its never gone aove 40. Its better if you install some temperature app to monitor. Battery circle is good as it gives the temperature as well as the battery percentage remaining.
The reason it heats up so much is because there is very little gap between the components and the phones body since its very thin so the heat gets transferred directly. But it cools down pretty easily.
Sometimes it could also be because of an app- in my case it was twitter. I login only with Wi-Fi and I have disable data so it kept trying to connect and that heated up the phone. After that experience, I always turn it off after I disconnect from Wi-Fi.
My phone get's VERY hot, will also crash and a yet to be unmentioned thing, is that if I turn it off an hour or so it feels the need to automatically turn itself on again. Anyhow I will be getting a replacement of the phone selling it as brand new and be getting a new different phone.

My phone used to get hot initially when i used to use stock kernels... Then I flashed insecure kernels...one thing I noticed that when I flashed Chainfire's kernel, the phone tries to stay at an optimum cpu frequency even while playing games on it...I tested this using cpu spy... I found the phone rarely used 1200 Mhz frequency but still felt buttery smooth... when the phone constantly stays at 1200 Mhz, then cpu heats up, but when it is at 800 Mhz, it never heated up even with the heaviest usage... and ya, my phone is not under/overclocked
mine doesn't get tooo hot unless i've overclocked it or something, have a go at undervolting it, look at tekrak's overclock guide in android development for advice on that
it should help temperature problems, i hardly get them
I've done the air condition trick after it got too hot twice. But I had a doubt as to whether the sudden heating and cooling will have a damage on the phone and so stopped that. Now I just wait for it to cool down.
I've got it up to 55°, playing order & chaos over wi-fi, max brightness and connected to my charger supply.
Connecting it to the charger itself heats it up a lot so I can imagine what will happen over wifi with heavy gaming

Didn't it damage your phone?
Got this phone just yesterday. Highest temps i've had so far while gaming over WiFi and charging: +39C CPU, +42C battery. Before launching any game i take the phone out of protective case and set CPU to 200-800MHz.
The only problem so far is Pocket Legends that freezes every few minutes. I found the thread about it here on XDA and on official website. This game was the main reason why i bought this phone. Wanted to play it on high-quality, large screen... Sigh

Long Lasting Battery!!

Hello Everyone,
I am seriously tired with the really little battery backing up time if I do heavy usage...So here is a really cool and serious method on how to improve the battery backing time.
Remember...Try the method with your Risk..You will the sole responsible if anything happens to your battery(although nothing will happen if you follow the instructions properly).
So here it goes:
1. Drain your battery to 0%.
2. Remove the battery.
3. In a polythene or a ziplock pouch place the battery in it and safely secure the pouch or polythene.
4. Now keep the battery in a DEEP FREEZER...(Brand Recommended: LG )
5. Let the battery remain in the DEEP FREEZER for 12-18 hours.
6. After the time has passed, remove the battery from the deep freezer, unpack it from the pouch or polythene, and let it come to a warm temperature.
In the mean time, while the battery is outside, there will be water droplets around the battery...dont worry its perfectly safe, but make sure that you clean them.
Now place it in your phone and charge it...You will see the difference...
How it works:
If you are a chemistry student or if you have learnt chemistry, the battery contains lithium fluid, which after a period of time starts to become more liquidish..so the bonds weaken, and therefore less battery backing time...If you keep it in the deep freezer, the bonds become more powerful and hence they 'Handshake' more perfectly. So therefore a better battery backing time.
I did this trick, and it really works...so go ahead and try it!!!
Anybody tested?wanna try,but I always get backfire by doing silly stuff.and as I rember.I saw a warning that the battery shouldn't be cooled below the temperature of 4°C

LoL.....batteries musnt exceed the temperature above 40 degrees....cooling wont harm it in anyway!!!! and i tried...it seriously powerups ur battery!!!
I get 4 - 5 Days out of my battery! So i don't have to do this YET. Really thanks for this. I will try it when my battery starts to be weak.
Do you have any screen shots of your battery consumption to back up you claim by any chance...

Freezing will actually damage the battery in the long run. The same holds true for totally draining it.
Now, this method might work in the short term but not in the way you're thinking. Freezing the battery will actually slow down the chemical processes, which results in what could be described as undervoltage at the hardware level.

I dont have this problem at all. Was running antutu benchmark two times in a row yesterday with 100% brightness without auto activated, AND charging, and it reached 36C. And its about 27C in this room.

ya i think im going to the s5 or the nexus 5, it keeps happening, so im done.
Are you only having a problem trying to do a benchmark at high brightness or are you having problems with regular use? I use Lux for autobrightness and it's bright enough for me and I have no issues with over heating.
Also, I wouldn't downgrade to the Nexus 5 if you're giving up on this phone. Not saying it's a bad phone, but it's comparatively a downgrade. A G2 would be a better downgrade than that or side grade to the S5 or M8 or whatever it is the HTC phone is called.

I'd first suggest you just use the phone and not worry about the benchmarks. Benchmarks are meant to push the system so that could be why you're having problems. With daily use, even with the screen as bright as you have it, you may not notice any other issue. Give it a chance first.
And from reviews I've read, it does sound like the M8 is the next best. I almost considered it, but it's about the same size as the G3 with a smaller screen. Fortunately, I'm loving my G3.

The no lag trick, is no real trick, it turns off stuff to keep your device save from overheating, so, that's why it turned off afterwards.
I've kept the stock setting and never had any shutdowns or noticed any performance problems at games or dim, it gets warm sometimes at long gaming, but that's it.

I bought the phone because it had nice specs. i returned the phone because it was apparently defective. My new LG G3 has not overheated to shut down. got a little hot but not bad

How is the camera in 4k recording? is that fixed?

Z3+ SoC Temperature Limit to Prevent Overheating

So I ran into this youtube video. Since I also have these two phones., I decided to do my own test and looks like S6 lets the SOC temperature to go over 70C while recording 4K video but Sony probably set the limit around 60C/65C for the whole camera app. Now that might be a good thing to ensure longevity of the phone, but some people might find it too conservative. So what do you guys think?
Edit: I think this limit only applies to the camera app. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I saw a temp reading of 70C (using CPU Z) after a 50 minute gaming session. Yet the game was not shut down at that point.
Battery drained to what level when you played games? Cause I saw a video within 3hrs and few minutes (I can't exactly remember) phone just shut down automatically.

I wasn't paying attention to battery level Did you just say you watched a 3hr long video? Battery life is less than Z2 in my case at this moment. I used to finish my day with 20% on Z2. On Z3+, it's like 10%. Also keep in mind Z3+ screen is a lot brighter. With similar brightness, the difference would be quite small.
I also checked out the GSMarena battery life rating. Their test is quite faulty as they just set brightness to 50% on all phones. 50% on Z2 would be 250 nits, for Z3+ it'd be 350 nits. They should set the brightness to the same absolute number in all tests.

I was talking about the msm_temp, which is 57C in your case. Z3+ does the same thing, camera app closes when it hits ~55C/60C. The limit is just too low. I know it's there to prevent overheating. Ironically, this is exactly why some 'experts' think camera overheats  But it doesn't as 55C is much lower than the 70C temp that S6 hits after 5 minutes of 4K recording.

Well, as I mentioned in the first post, this exact same silicon hits 70C during gaming and the phone just runs fine. Surprisingly, the limit is ~60C only for the camera app.
Called Sony Support today
So i called sony support today to hear what they have to say about the heating issue.
Got in contact with a tech guy, who tried to explain to me some of the reasons this might happen.
He told me that apps\processes running in the background is helping the phone to overheat when we use a camera.
So i turned everything off, and testet, but still got the heating issues, and i don't even have to start recording. Just have to turn on the camera and see through the viewfinder, and the phone instantly start heating up.
He told me to try and run the phone in safemode, that way every 3rd party apps would be disabled, and run the camera. I did this, and still same issue. First i get a message about heating could lead the app to exit, and after some minutes, the app exits to cool down the phone.
So i have been hearing rumors about people talking about maybe sony is going to fix this issue in a software update by doing some throttling on cpu, but the only thing the tech guy knew about the next update 5.1 for z3+ is, that sony is going to extend the volume button functionality so that we can control all the volume setting.

The 1% Battery Game..

OK, so I'm at work today, and a bit bored. As today we expect lots of rain in NYC, and I don't expect any customers. So, I have a little "game" we can play here on XDA. Well, not really a game since it can take a while. But, let's see how you're device does. The rules of this game are very simple. Let's see how long your device will go before dropping a single percentage fromm 100% to 99%. And with your data/phone signal turned on, since it'll last an even longer time with it off. I'll start it off, mine is everything enabled(just no use at all), right before it dropped to 99%..

you can change how fast it starts, and other doze settings.. I didn't change anything in doze though.
How did you time this to show this info at 99 ?

the old fashioned way, turning on the screen for a quick look. after a while, I stopped looking after an hour and 15 min, since it always made it that far, and started looking at it closer to one hour 30 minutes.

What's your set up ? I've tried a lot of different kernels and settings, but IMO, hellscore kernel flashed stock with no additional modifications delivers insane battery life compared to anything I've used. Toss in kernel auditor, undervolt and mess around with some settings and it goes even further.
Instead of a 1 min battery life, we should make a thread of who has the longest SOT off total battery or something.

Pure Nexus, with Despair kernel, but none of their setups. Setup is my own, from Trinity kernel of past.. ondemand/deadline with ondemand set up with a 15000 sampling rate and a 98% up threshold. Runs and performs better this way
I never ever undervolt, but do overvolt on occasion.
And overall sot, na. I actually kinda do agree with you, but its way too easy to cheat sot.

no.. your thinking of Morfic. he's the creator of Trinity kernel, I just did all the testing. he was close to TeamWhiskey, I learned of them later on.

Yeah that who I was thinking of I haven't seen anything from him in a while now, not really followed since nexus s days.

I recall there are tricks to get a little extra in the tank at 100%. Like charge to 100%, drain 1% and charge again several times.
I don't really know if the resulting difference in charge shows between 100 or 99 or spread out some other manner.
I'm not accusing you of anything, just wondering if 100% is the best starting point for the experiment.
Then again, starting at a different point brings it's own challenges in starting and rrecording the experirment.
Obviously best estimate comes from a longer period in standby,.
On the third hand, as the title suggests, it's not strictly an experiment, also a game.... and this one is quick and interesting.
At any rate, I'm sure you have very lean standby power use, better than me.

I actually charge until there are 0mA coming in(CurrentWidget). that's when I consider 100% charged. normally, when the phone shows 100%, there is still up to 400mA still entering the device. now I'm starting to give up some of my secrets :silly:
This really isn't a good way to judge battery life. Once a phone reaches 100% the charging stops and the battery discharges some before the device starts charging again. During this time the battery will report 100% but may be slightly below that. This is why sometimes you take a phone off the charger and it drops from 100% to like 97% almost instantly.
Looking back its kinda funny that older phones only read battety in 10% increments. How did we ever survive.
[Edit: I see this was addressed the same time I posted.]
Do I win? I bet no one else got above 3000% and below 0%
