Apps closing in background (RAM) - Asus ZenFone 3 Zoom Questions & Answers

Hello,
I bought a ZE553KL 32gb/3g RAM model. At first I didnt know that the 32gb model has only 3gb RAM.
Well, upon using the smartphone I noticed that apps wont stay in background (RAM) for too long, example:
- I open facebook app, browse a little, then I open another app, use for a little time and when I switch back to facebook it has to load again 95% of the time.
- If i open the Antutu Benchmark App and then go to home screen, and switch back it has to load again, I dont even need to open another app for antutu to be closed.
I also noticed that the system wont let me use more than 2.2GB approximately, which means the system shuts down apps when i have less than 900MB or 800MB free RAM which for me makes no sense. why would they make a 3GB RAM phone that doesnt let you use it? What a waste of RAM.
I tried disabling the option "Clean up in suspend" at the auto-start manager and even disabling the whole Mobile Manager App. but nothing helps. I rarely can switch from an app to another without it closing.
Have someone had the same experience? does it happen on the 4gb RAM model too? can I do something about it? it's really annoying me and i'm thinking about getting a refund on this purchase, very disappointing

Nevermind

I tried everything, even developer options, doesnt matter what I do, the android wont let me use more than 2,2GB and everytime I want to switch to another app it has to load again, every damn time.
I guess the only solution would be a custom ROM, does anyone know when we will get one?

Laggy Phone

My phones lately been acting funny
programs have been fore closing and its been laggy and idk why i did put any new apps..
dont know what iv did different i never did anything i have dxtop but it never did anything before
my phones moded and rooted and all the other stuff JF released
If you have a lot of apps or if you're running low on internal phone memory, it would cause your phone to lag. There is also a couple more reasons, I just can't think of em at the moment. =/
You ned task manager. Look which programs you've got running, may be you don't need some of them. I know for sure that "phonebook" app and "mybackup" app are some serious memory hogs, my phone was acting all goofy, uninstalled those two-problems are gone and forgotten.

And i happen to have both of them..........well how do I check my internal memory..I have dxtop memory widget and always says around 24 to 26 mb free of memory..so u think i should remove those 2 apps? i mean my back up i can always reinstall but i have that nadroid backup thing when i got my phone rooted to do a full system backup to my sd card

Don't quote me on that but....
24-26 mb of memory is probably available for app installs (that would be system/data/data part of your phone). Running programs occupying different part of the memory, think of it as a RAM memory on the computer. Android has it's own program to decide which processes will run in the background and which wont but it's too immature at the moment. It'll get better with time.
With that said, phonebook, mybackup and in your case dxtop are all running constantly on your phone along with gmail, myfaves (whether you like it or not), maps, messaging, and bunches of others. Something is coded in them to prevent android to shut them down. Lock 2.0 is another one that runs in the backround all the time but it's not that memory hungry and doing just fine by itself.
The best way to check what's running is to download "Task Manager for root users" from the market (it's free). It will show which programs are running at the time. Click on any program and it will show the option to shut that program down. but if you shut down phonebook and hit refresh you'll see that it will restart itsef.
I suggest that you get rid of the phonebook, it looks very very nice but can't make it default so what's the point? Backup is waste of space too, you can back up all the info other ways so again, what's the point?
Good luck, I'm sure you can figure it out and reclaim the speed that G1 is capable of. Sorry for taking so long to get to the point.
Oh yeah, Imeem will run in the background indefenately as well.

Well got rid of phone book and my backup since i can always back up my full system
and I already have advance task manager and i can close all the applicatiosn running but not proccess or services with that said I always have close everything app and run that once in a while
I noticed that with dxtop(trial) that every time I went to the home screen, either by hitting home button or backing out of an app, there was a lot of lag. And this is before the little countdown timer the trial has in it.
Uninstalled and am in the process of trying out the other two home replacement apps. Dont have that problem with them. If you are still having issues might try unistalling dxtop.
I probably shouldn't even ask because it was covered many times but.... do you have your caches on sd and if not do you clear them often?
how do i close programs running in the background. i know i have to hold home, but wat do i do to close them.

Screen Freezes

Can those of you that notice screen freezes check your available memory at the time of the freeze. Im noticing that my build works perfectly until I get under 190mb available and it get progressively worse with the more memory in use. At around 100mb I start getting long wake times.
I have also removed three screens of icons and widgets to stop items from reloading after I kill the app. I have also reenabled my gsensor and auto-rotate (I had used gscript to disable it). Again as long as my memory stays above 200mb the system is GREAT, even with the gsensor active.
I did not notice any freezes after initial load, but as I started accumulating apps and widgets I think I have hit a choke point with memory.
I hope I am on to something.
Also, Im using TasKiller to kill apps with "Kill on Screen Off" enabled.
I am interested in seeing what people are experiencing. As I have stopped using task managers and have reverted to allowing android to do its thing. I have also turned of the screen rotation. I do not experience long wakes or screen freeze normally.only when my setcpu power profile falls below 572mhz do wakes become slower.
I tried to stop using task killers but i cant uninstall TasKiller as mattc has put it into the ROM so if I uninstall it it comes back on reboot. So I figure if he put there, it must be worth using.

You would think that but I dont think people have an understanding of how android works vs winmo. In winmo Apps run all willynilly and dont shut down when memory is needed.
I will do my best to explain basic over view as i saw it
Your home screen is always in memory as it is considered a frontend app.
When you open a app it keeps the home screen in memory.
Now say this app is gmail. gmail opens and you open a link that opens a web browser. Now Say you decide to open a game but you have no more memory.
Android decides which app can be killed to make room for the new app.
since gmail was opened prior to the browser it is considered the oldest.
Android creates a saved state as you will. But only of the position in which you were at in gmail. It can then auto populate that info at a later time.
Then once you are done with the game If you press back it will bring up the web browser. If you press back again it will access that gmail saved state to bring you back to that point in the app killing off the game as its un-needed.

Remove the APK for TasKiller in the AndroidApps folder, boot into android and uninstall. Then it won't be back.
I just flashed the 2.12.50_2 on my hd2 tmous version
i had a completely stock radio 2.06.xx I flashed mattc 1ndroid version 1.7
and it would freeze on the lock screen....is that a radio issue or a WM Rom underneath it issue??

I'm not running out off memory, it's that memory is getting really low. That's the part I don't understand. I have a gig of system memory, where is it all going? How do I get down to 100 meg when I have nothing running? I'm trying to research android memory usage so I can figure this out. I know that since I started keeping my memory above 200... zero screen freezes. That speaks volumes to me. I wish I understood more.

ROM 1GB;
RAM 576MB
Rom where winmo is stored.
Ram where apps get loaded and part of android is running.
Do you have auto rotation turned off?
I experience very few freezes if any with it turned off
there is a toggle on the power widget when I do need it.

[Q] iconia tab amount of free ram is too little

i thought honeycomb tablets have 1 gb of ram ( ~770 in reality) so I thought I would be multitasking quite well. But my icona usually have about 200 ram free when I check it in a task switcher. I hear other people with other tablets have more than 500 mb free or at least near that amount. I rooted my tab and deleted some system apps that I don't use so that they dnt run in the background, but still my free ram is very low. Just to let you know, I have about 2 pages of apps in my app drawer with all the system apps such as gmail included. I don't think that's too many.
Will installing a custom rom fix this issue? Any help is appreciated!
---------- Post added at 11:45 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:41 PM ----------
and I would like to know also that installing a custom rom will make this tablet faster when switching between apps. It becomes very laggy sometimes doing that. Also right now on stock rom, I sometimes have even around only 150mb free ram. That's like 256mb ram on a smartphone..
Might want to use Advanced Task Killer By reChild
It was the only way to keep 300 ram free.. i would love 770 free
Lets see IF they ger windows 8 tablet edition on here.....How much would we have....1/16 of 1gb xD
yea the maximum I get is about 350mb after killing all the tasks. At the very first right after killing everything, its a little bit more than 400, then it keeps decreasing because of the closed services starting to run again. I once saw a video review of touchwiz on galaxy tab 10.1 and in the task manager, the free ram was over 600 out of 7xx. I couldn't believe it. Of course nothing was running, but when mine doesn't run any apps I have about 350mb. As I said I dont have that many apps..I didn't want to install custom roms and wanted to keep mine as stock as possible, but IF a custom rom will help will free ram issue, I am willijg to install one. Or if there is any other solution, please let me know! Oh and right now, I have a gmail and a web browser with 1 tab open, and I only have 264mb ram left. Please help if you know how to solve this issue..
Androids memory model causes it to cache very vigorously. The amount of RAM free is pretty much a worthless number because the system automatically relaxes the cache when the system is lower on memory, so programs don't get rejected RAM requests.

Yea I know about that, but because of that, multitasking is not really good on this tablet...I really need help on this issue..

There is no issue here, it's working just fine. If it didn't cache anything, then it'd take 30 seconds longer to load an app. As I said, if your system is low on ram, it'll automatically release as much as required to maintain the system from the cache. It's not causing any hit on multi-tasking, in fact, it helps keep the programs loaded and in cache so they switch faster.
I think you are saying that android system kills the app that's not as much used that's running in the background, so that the system cannot run out of memory. If you are really saying this, I already know it.. or maybe you are saying something different. What I'm saying is that BECAUSE the system kills background app to run a newly opened app if memory is too little, when I reopen that killed app, it has to reload again, and that affects effective multitasking. If it kills the browser, then all the tabs has to reload again, and it's so annoying..I have to have browser with 2 to 3 tabs, a dictionary, pdf reader, word document, and sometimes more, and I thought with 1GB RAM tablets, this would be easy to handle. If there are about 500 MB RAM free when nothing's open, then it could be possible to use all those apps without any one closing due to low memory, but I only have about 350MB free when nothing's open. I prefer not to install custom ROM, so I rooted with 'Iconia Root' app, then deleted some bloatwares, then unrooted again with the app. I thought this would help a lot, but it didn't..I probably didn't uninstall all the system apps that's useless. I don't know what AcerNidus (I'm not sure if this is correct) is, and some other acer apps that I should keep and I should delete..I would like to keep receiving updates, so I shouldn't delete something like system updater, but I don't know what else I should keep and delete. Thank's for trying to help me though. If anyone know, could you guys tell me what system apps should I delete, so that I will have the most free ram, run smoothly, keep getting acer updates, an not void warranty? Thank you so much!

A weird problem

So my phone has this problem where in the settings it shows that over half the ram is free but when I see recent apps and clear them it's showing much less ram available
I dunno if it is it... Or some of my phones memory isn't being used somehow or the device doesn't recognize it.
My phone is getting slower because of this.
How do I free up most of the ram and get rid of third party apps running in the bg..
Thanks.

Best ROM for performance/overclocking/gamedev?

Hi all,
I am using a T350 to test some game builds on and I am getting low frame rates because it is a few years old now
Which ROM is the most "stripped/bloatfree" version which I could use to do my tests on, And can you recommend any which have overclocking functions, and if so, what kind of stable settings have been found to work on a T350.
Thanks!
The main problem seems to be the lack of RAM, As it has 1.5GB but using JazzROM, The system uses almost 1gb of memory alone. How can I free up memory space from system processes ?
Honestly there isn't a whole lot you can do, you could maybe free up a few more MB if you go into system processes and kill some random stuff. But you're already on a custom ROM so there won't be much if anything to kill.

JazzROM is stock base ROM, that's why, it is NOT really slimmed down version. What you can do is, you can use root explorer and go to System --> Apps, and delete some apps (make sure these apps can be downloadable from either Galaxy App Store or Google Play Store)
Ok thanks guys. I set "do not run background processes" and deleted some system apps, I can get about 800mb of free memory. One other thing I wanted to ask is that when I press the power button on the device to put it in standby mode, It goes to a lock/clock screen and doesnt turn the display off using JazzROM, Any ideas?
