Carrier throttling data on Netflix, YouTube, etc. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S8+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Not sure if everyone has seen or read about this yet but it looks like the major carriers are intentionally slowing your connection down through services that compete with there own media.
Here is a YouTube video that lauds it all out for you.
I tested this on my device and saw a HUGE slowdown through fast.com (the Netflix server test). YouTube seemed to be largely uneffected. But others on AT&T unlimited plans have seen really bad slow downs in both.
So just wondering a few things :
1.) Has anyone else tried this? Are you seeing similar issues?
2.) Is this AT&T server side or is the firmware related? I'm on stock current AT&T firmware, but had anyone tried this or seen different results on the U1 firmware? I know of the S7 EDGE the Tmobile firmware actually got the fastest data a peed results on AT&T service when I tested on that device.
Thanks.

Anyone on the U1 unlocked firmware try testing this yet?

I think its AT&T side. I tried this speed test and was hitting 4Mbps. I turned on my VPN and hit 25. That was yesterday. Today I cant even go to that website from my phone, says its blocked.

Crazy how fast they stopped following net neutrality.
Has anyone tried on the unlock firmware. I'm just wonder if it is server side or firmware related.

I'm not sure how this is news. ATT sent out tons of emails regarding what they call Stream Saver multiple times and provided links how to opt out if you want. Personally it doesn't bother me. I don't need the 1080P stream to a 5inch screen and its help bring the kids usage down by about 4M a month against our data usage.

The issue is I've competed opted out of it, and they are still limiting the network connection.
It also limits it when I got spot my phone and access it through a laptop or my chrome cast.
It's also a violation of federal net neutrality laws.

I check with my PC and this what I get.
Claim internet speed by provider is up to 100MB , I have check and I got around 115MB all the time. With Fast.com I get 4.5 MB and on YouTube I have around 80MB. With my AT&T speed in my house I have around 50MB on Fast.com I have 4.1 to 5MB and on YouTube I get around 11MB.
So I don't know what is really going on.
Edit: today is even better on you tube I have around 20 mb with AT&T mobile data

Yeah it's like AT&T specifically targeting showing down Netflix. Soon BS if you ask me poetically mad peeps are dropping cable for Netflix

I haven't noticed a bit of throttling when I'm streaming Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, or Hulu using AT&T data... I don't do it a lot (especially since I can download videos on Netflix or Amazon) but I stream enough to be able to clock speeds. I agree it's not likely that it's firmware-related; if you're getting throttled, it's got to be server-side.

Also watch the YouTube video in the OP.. You are getting throttled you just don't notice it.

It's the at&t plan you're on.
If you're on unlimited choice, streaming speeds are 3mbps
If you're on unlimited plus, streaming speeds are 10mbps
It's our way of getting an extra 30/month out of you.
Sorry.

By any chance have you tried playing with your radio settings at all?
Im in the middle of a really poor service area where att is a roaming network so my tests are inconclusive.....
*#*#4636#*#* in dialer and run some tests with different network types enabled.
Or at least check it frequently to see what type of signal youre getting. Forcing LTE only may be helpful.

It's nothing I have done. Watch the YouTube video it's being done by every carrier. It's in violation of bet neutrality. And a breach of contract probably too. Check your own phone when you get somewhere with good service. It'll be the same.

torrents with titan

has anyone used the titan tethered to laptop to download torrents?
i know it works, but im thinking more along the lines of my carrier (VZW) finding realizing because the traffic looks differently than other traffic.
am i being paranoid? or am i more likely to get caught by vz for tethering if i download torrents.
thanks
Verizon will shut you down if you download excessively. It worked for me, but I wouldn't do it if I were you. I guess if you're desperate.
I think the unwritten download limit is 5GB. My brother got his data connection turned off after we downloaded some torrents over Christmas break at Vail. Good coverage though.
Netflix is probably a better option if you're just jonsing for some movies, they've got an online player now too.
im not concerned with the limit as much as what the traffic looks like...
im well under the 5gb limit, just want to know if they are more likely to notice that its torrents than just browsing internet or streaming movies.
They seem to cut my connection session anytime I visit youtube for some odd reason, that or my connection freezes.
I've used wmTorrent on occasion. Good download speeds. Unlike many desktop torrent clients, the version I used did not have the ability to encrypt traffic. My carrier - TELUS - hasn't bothered me regarding types of traffic. Please note I have 'unlimited data'. Frankly I think it's unrealistic to expect a WISP to pay attention to your every packet.

Each carrier says they have unlimited data plans, this is not really true. If you look in the contract, unlimited usually means 5-8gb a month depending on the service. If you go over those quantities they have the right to end your service. I use my phone as a modem when I go on business trips (about 12 times a year) and I use it for torrents, I been doing it for almost 2 years and never had a problem, but I never went over 8gb (limit for sprint).

I have never kept track of usage, this is very helpful.
Were you keeping track on your laptop or is there a way to track on ppc?
Also is there a utorrent type app for wm? Something we could use to download to sd card?
I use NetLimiter 2 Monitor.
http://www.netlimiter.com/
Its free and will gige you a trafic report for the hr. day, mo., yr.
And you can throttle it down for separate connections.
I try to keep my usage under 5gb.
When I was with Qwest, they thought I was using too much at 12gb.
I have since been monitoring my trafic.
WM Torrent v2, is a usefull program, but I then have to logon to VZW to check my usage.

I didnt really keep track, but I didnt go too crazy. I just tethered to my laptop and used utorrent for DLing stuff
I know that I use over 10gb a month on my tether. I also have an aircard that I use for my home network. I have truly unlimited data ($52.80 a month [60-12%]). I've had an unlimited data plan with VZW for six years or so. A buddy of mine got an air card awhile after I did and he got shut down for streaming movies. "Over data usage limits" was the reason cited. I know for a fact that I stream and download five to ten times more data than he does because my connection is always on and I'm usually downloading something. uTorrent works great while tethered. If VZW was going to shut someone down for what they download VS how much they download, it would require a massive number of employees to keep track of all of their customers.

Check your mobile internet settings. I just flashed cm7 and it has a couple of new selections...like international roaming, which was preselected. Also, it was preselected to roam on national affiliate networks. Since a lot of these roms are from people "across the pond" as they say, it will default to their servers. So, de-select those options and it will find a server closer to where you live. It is pretty kewl as it does switch to another network, but it is only 1rt speed, not 3G, so it didn't make my connection any faster. There are several threads out there on this about slow 3G speeds. I can only hope that with the 4G coming online, maybe the spectrum will open up to allow faster 3G speeds.
Lol glad im not the only 1 seeing this.. I was testing my connection in Germany yesterday LOL...
Tho even swapped back to the closest server (Germantown WI) , my speed still sucked..So I called sprint when I got home and told him my results compared to an ATT and Verizon phones while they were right next to me, and they were 6-7x faster then mine.
The CSR told me that its possible with northern Ill. getting 4G its working its way north into Wisconsin, and that could be affecting towers here while they transition..
Frankly I dont buy it. 2-3 weeks ago it was great, since then, 360kb is common. Also in the phone call I told him that I have no issues paying the $10 premium data charge, but if my phone keeps chugging along as it is now, I will be calling back since there is no way in hell I can take advantage of this "premium data" when I cant even watch a video on YouTube without constant pauses and other downloads basically crawling along.

I chatted with a rep last night and they gave me the whole "there are no issues" song and dance. Clearly with so many people noticing this in so many different areas there is SOMETHING wrong with Sprints network. Either that or theyre throttling their speeds thinking people wont notice.
The csr i spoke to said he was going to push something thru to my phone and I should reboot it..which I did..
I see somewhat of an improvement at home (I THINK theres a relay on the watertower near my house but im not sure) and its now about 1.4mb down...Tho most of my issues are when im away from home and not near WiFi lol
I really hope Sprint isnt pulling a ninja throttle job on us to ease up the network for all the new subs

Sprint's "Unlimited" but limited... data plan

So as I spoke with a live chat representative I was focused on getting my answer,
does sprint throttle your data service. The answer is yes, in fact I was told that your
data service for the so called "unlimited" plan will actually STOP the data flow to your
phone rendering it usless except for calling. I'd like some more information on this
"unlimited" plan including if anyone has the fine print to point out that this is indefinatly
supposed to happen.
Thanks.
This is as dumb of a rumor as the one I posted about the update on 4/1. The rep you spoke to was just as stupid as the one I spoke to.
Well K0nane I do in fact have the problem on my phone as I was tethering while downloading a game off the internet and I encountered this. It was a test to see if there was throttling and as I can tell now my data is SLOW if not off.
Possibly it could of been the app failing.
False. Sprint didn't spend millions of dollars on their "truely unlimited" campaign only to be that stupid. If that was even remotely true it would've happened and Endgadget would be all over it talking Sprint down and selling iPhones I stream over 3G using Subsonic and can easily pull down 2GBs a week. I've never had any problems. The mobile broadband cards have a 5GB/month cap but that doesn't apply to phones.

Well when I first got my epic I kinda went crazy and started downloading torrents.. I probly hit like 40-50 gigs that month maybe more. I definitely noticed a BIG slowdown but only on 4g.. it was at the point where my 3g was faster for about a month before I dipped back below the threshhold, but only at home.. look up clears throttling practices. It has to do with how much data you download from specific towers within a certain period of time I think. But maybe it was sprints network taking a dump like he said.
cd's or tapes?

Yes, you may hit problems on 4G, because Clear is known for being shady - but it's not Sprint who's in charge of that. They're not responsible, and it doesn't happen on 3G. It's also not a set limit.
yeah everything has a limit though you know.. I'm sure if I could download fast enough on 3g they'd throttle that too! lol.. but seriously 3g is so slow around here that I could never hit over 20 gigs even if I tethered it to my media/torrent server the whole month and went without a phone.
cd's or tapes?
This is for mobile broadband and not for smart phones.

There is no cap or throttle at all on the Sprint network. Retard customer service representatives have no idea what they are talking about half the time.

+1 on clear throttling (11mbps when I signed up, 2 months later consistently .25mbps, yes 256kbps) along with their very shady cancellation and pre-billing prepaid accounts, but I digress before I rant...
On the Sprint side though, I have used quite a bit, as my home internet for a while (my justification, I had spent money on clear FOR home internet, their side throttles, sprint's side doesn't but it still taxes Clears towers I paid for) and used somewhere between 30-40GB and other than time of day inconsistencies, I NEVER saw any noticable throttling on 3g or 4g. Incidentally I had used Sprint's 3g before the epic between home ISPs and used around 14-18gb and never saw any kind of slowdown on 3g or 4g. YMMV

[Q] MyTouch 4G unlimited 4G?

I've been looking over a few threads here about the soft data caps that T-Mobile uses. I'm aware about how it works and everything but I've found something kind of odd. I've seen a couple of posts about other people having some success with it.
Over the past 3 or 4 months my phone has been my primary internet connection by using the hotspot feature. This phone is completely stock (non rooted, no custom roms, etc) and within a few days of my new billing cycle I would hit the 5GB data limit for my plan. Out of frustration I turned off WCDMA/GSM auto to GSM to see if it would work faster. I turned it back to auto after a day or two and found that I had been un-throttled. I would check the My Account app on my phone and it would state that I had been throttled but everything is working on 4G speeds.
So this month just out of curiosity I've been using as much data as possible just to see if anything will be done. I'm not trying to be a data hog or anything, this is just out of curiosity. I'm 7 days into my billing cycle and have used over 22 gigs and still going strong. I'm currently streaming Netflix in HD and have two laptops and another smart phone using the data.
Does anyone know if I'll see a cease and desist letter from T-Mobile or if anything at all will happen?
Side note: This phone/T-Mobile has really surprised me with the speeds and capabilities it has. I used an iPhone4 with AT&T to stream Netflix and the quality and buffering was horrendous in comparison.
This sounds extremely beautiful to me as I bought the 10$ 200mb and I blow through that in less then a day. If this works you would not believe how happy this would make me. As for T-Mobile doing a cease and desist order I would highly doubt it. When I had a T-Mobile dash 2 years ago, without a data plan I was able to connect to the internet free of charge, and I would watch youtube Justin.tv and so on. I did this for almost 1 and a half years and have seen nothing from T-Mobile.
so basically, all you did was turn it to only GSM for a day or two, and then back on and the throttle went away?
Im gonna try the same thing and see what kinda speeds im getting after I turn it back on. 5gigs goes really quick and throttled speeds suck, Drives me crazy.. Ill get back with my results..
Subscribing to this... I just got a throttle boner. If this turns out to work for other folks I will seriously **** my pants. I had to upgrade to the $60 10gb plan bc I have been using this as my primary internet.

/Settings/Wireless & Networks/Mobile Networks/Network Mode. Then select GSM only
thats the first place I looked but to no avail, I can't seem to find the network modes but the *#4636#*#* works just fine, has anyone found this method to work?

What phone are you currently using?

Just an update on my usage. I've attached a screenshot of the amount of data that I've used so far from the monitor usage section of mytmobile.com
Also a speedtest that I ran just now just to see what it's running at. Right now usually seems around peak time, the ping and download speed is usually a bit faster at night.

Subscribing to this... I just got a throttle boner. If this turns out to work for other folks I will seriously **** my pants. I had to upgrade to the $60 10gb plan bc I have been using this as my primary internet.

That's what I was going to have to do to try to avoid being throttled. If you get a chance to try it out let me know what happens.
If anyone else does want to try this if you could let me know what happens. Also if you could let me know the phone model, current data plan, and anything else that you think may be important. I'm curious to know if it is my phone, the MyTouch 4G's in general, or what. I don't know anyone else with a smart phone with T-Mobile that cares about this so if anyone could provide any feedback on this it would be great.
My refill minutes and data just started today and I'm already at 1 gig will probably report back next Sunday
I have gotten the "5gb throttle" text from T-Mobile a couple times but I have never been throttled and that's without doing this "trick". I've never done anything and still seem to not get throttled even tho I've gotten the texts saying they were going to throttle me for the remainder of my cycle. It did it on my MT4G and its also doing it on my Sensation now. Maybe I'm just lucky.
*knocks on wood*
Im trying this asap...I run a shoutcast radio station (limbik frequencies if anyone cares to know) and I drive a truck all night so have been listening via the 4g while i drive...needless to say I run out of data in no time. Even if I upgraded to the 5gb plan (which is the highest they offer me) I'd still run out...1mb per minute, 5-9 hours a night....doesn't add up right! Worst part is that its a nonprofit station that AOL pays for our bandwidth to stream...seriously I shouldn't have to pay out the ass to make sure its running and simultaneously enjoy it!

[Q] Verizon throttling unlimited plan

I am on an unlimited plan and I think I am being throttled, One thing I know is happening is I'm kicked off 4g and forced to go on 3g. A quick turn on and off airplane mode fixes it til they do it again but I was wondering if there was a way to force a 4G ONLY connection so they can't kick me off.
I am rooted so hopefully there is a way... If not can I block verizon from seeing im on an unlimited plan or how much I use? thanks

I too believe I just started to get throttled, my 3g dropped from 2mb down to .2 KB overnight with no fix, tried reflashing the phone, repgrorgramming with network, and reflashing both stock and after market ROMS.
Did you find an answer
Ya...if they're throttling you they wouldn't drop you from 4G to 3G. They'd let you stay on LTE and just drop your speeds.
The problem is Samsung makes ****** radios for CDMA/Verizon. It's been true on every Galaxy phone, including the Nexus. I don't know why people don't learn this.

Thing is the internet apps work fine (netflix instagram clash of clans) but the BROWSER IS SOOOO FREAKING SLOW!!! I'M staring at a blank page for minutes and I just give up. If it hit stop most of the page comes up but not before!
Certain pictures on Facebook same issue.
And yes I have tried multiple browsers. I am only at 5 gigs for this month! Calling Verizon soon.

That's a Verizon thing. When I had Verizon I hit the exact same issue all the time. It's the way they handle data streaming through their servers. Traffic gets routed poorly, so especially anything that requires multiple DNS changes (such as page forwarders) will be excruciatingly slow.
As an example: Try to open a webpage link from a Facebook post. I can almost guarantee it will take longer than just loading a website on its own by quite a bit. There's some inherent slowdown in doing this kind of thing, but doing it through the Verizon network is like pulling teeth.
