Sprint's "Unlimited" but limited... data plan - Epic 4G General

So as I spoke with a live chat representative I was focused on getting my answer,
does sprint throttle your data service. The answer is yes, in fact I was told that your
data service for the so called "unlimited" plan will actually STOP the data flow to your
phone rendering it usless except for calling. I'd like some more information on this
"unlimited" plan including if anyone has the fine print to point out that this is indefinatly
supposed to happen.
Thanks.

This is as dumb of a rumor as the one I posted about the update on 4/1. The rep you spoke to was just as stupid as the one I spoke to.

Well K0nane I do in fact have the problem on my phone as I was tethering while downloading a game off the internet and I encountered this. It was a test to see if there was throttling and as I can tell now my data is SLOW if not off.

Possibly it could of been the app failing.

False. Sprint didn't spend millions of dollars on their "truely unlimited" campaign only to be that stupid. If that was even remotely true it would've happened and Endgadget would be all over it talking Sprint down and selling iPhones I stream over 3G using Subsonic and can easily pull down 2GBs a week. I've never had any problems. The mobile broadband cards have a 5GB/month cap but that doesn't apply to phones.

I'd suspect that or Sprint's network taking a dump.

So there was a 5GB cap but that is for broadband cards, so the representative did not answer my question after I was asked to rephrase it 3 different times.

K0nane, while your roaming around the thread, do you possibly know when this PRL update is supposed to actually be released? And if it is released OTA will I get it OTA if I have your Frozen ROM+Kernal?
Much Appreciated.

Yeah, no. I have not found a limit yet. That is all I'm going to say as it seems the last thread I participated in that talked of the amount of data which people were downloading got closed.

When you say "downloading a game", I hope you dont mean through Steam. Watch your monthly data usage, if you abuse it, they will be on to you. If you consistently abuse the unlimited part that is.

i tethered atleast 7 gigs and never had an issue
i mean... downloaded via 4g on to my phone LOL

Sprint doesn't limit data but it does have highly inconsistent speeds.

Well when I first got my epic I kinda went crazy and started downloading torrents.. I probly hit like 40-50 gigs that month maybe more. I definitely noticed a BIG slowdown but only on 4g.. it was at the point where my 3g was faster for about a month before I dipped back below the threshhold, but only at home.. look up clears throttling practices. It has to do with how much data you download from specific towers within a certain period of time I think. But maybe it was sprints network taking a dump like he said.
cd's or tapes?

Yes, you may hit problems on 4G, because Clear is known for being shady - but it's not Sprint who's in charge of that. They're not responsible, and it doesn't happen on 3G. It's also not a set limit.

yeah everything has a limit though you know.. I'm sure if I could download fast enough on 3g they'd throttle that too! lol.. but seriously 3g is so slow around here that I could never hit over 20 gigs even if I tethered it to my media/torrent server the whole month and went without a phone.
cd's or tapes?

This is for mobile broadband and not for smart phones.

There is no cap or throttle at all on the Sprint network. Retard customer service representatives have no idea what they are talking about half the time.

+1 on clear throttling (11mbps when I signed up, 2 months later consistently .25mbps, yes 256kbps) along with their very shady cancellation and pre-billing prepaid accounts, but I digress before I rant...
On the Sprint side though, I have used quite a bit, as my home internet for a while (my justification, I had spent money on clear FOR home internet, their side throttles, sprint's side doesn't but it still taxes Clears towers I paid for) and used somewhere between 30-40GB and other than time of day inconsistencies, I NEVER saw any noticable throttling on 3g or 4g. Incidentally I had used Sprint's 3g before the epic between home ISPs and used around 14-18gb and never saw any kind of slowdown on 3g or 4g. YMMV

[Discussion] T-Mobile Android Device Provisioning Data Throttling

As a new T-Mobile (US) customer, I was told by customer service that my $30 data unlimited plan gets down/up speeds throttled once data usage exceeds 5gig within the billing cycle. This was said after I lost data service as a result of my device having been identified as a Nexus S and the account had been originally and incorrectly provisioned as a Smartphone by the agent setting up my account and SIM on the 16th.

dont quite understand what your getting at, but if you did go over your 5gig soft data cap then there aint much you can do
You've used 5 gigs of since the 16th on your phone?
On the G2 forums, they've developed a way to defeat the throttle.
However it has it's own drawbacks, and may not work on our phone due to changes in Gingerbread and/or just general differences in software.
Once more, this may not work on our phones but may give interested parties/developers a place to start.

I got throttled on my Nexus One last month. I was tethering, but not doing torrents or movies or anything like that...I'm not sure what happened, but in one day I got like 2-3gb downloaded on my laptop...never figured it out.
I got a text message saying I was throttled in speed until the end of the billing cycle. I never really noticed the throttling. I was getting 4Mb/s on speed tests before the throttle and 2.8-3.0Mb/s after. For normal use, this isn't a big deal.
Total usage last bill was 7gb. Never used that much before, usually hover around 3-4.

Sprint is cancelling my service

So, Sprint called me today to inform me that they are dropping my service because of excessive data roaming. They are not charging me an ETF and they are giving my 250$ deposit back. I am not upset about that, I am upset about not being able to use my Evo and the community that comes with it. I will miss the HTC XDA community if I have to go to Motorola or LG or SE.
My only choice when it comes to coverage is Verizon. The only phone that seems to be on the horizon is the Bionic that comes with LTE. I don't want the Droid X or Droid 2 because LTE is about to launch and would enjoy to have it, along with that sweet sweet dual core. Bionic seems to be the best bet, but I remember hearing something LG dropping a phone soon too.
My main question is, what Android phones are coming out this year with LTE and dual core? I don't mind being without phone service for a few months waiting.
wow, may I ask what your excessive data usage amounted to?

Of course.
It wasn't really excessive it was just that the majority of it was roaming. I only get Verizon coverage at work where I use my phone the most (when it comes to data, have WiFi at home) so I used the PRL hack to be on it all the time. I heard about them being upset about this and I was expecting at least a warning but they are straight up dropping my service.
My average data usage was 4 to 5GB on roaming with around 300-400mb on Sprint for the past 4-5 months.
Noob question...how do you know you are recieving roaming data? I have been complaining about horrible data speeds and told them i want to cancle with no fee. They said they basically base that off of calls dropped.and not data. I uae my phone minimal for calling but data is another story and it is horribly slow.
Verizon has a HTC android coming out soon, it's suppose to be a really good one. Sorry I cannot remember the name of it, but when I get a chance I will post it back in here with a link for you. Sorry to hear about Sprint. Did you use the data hack by any chance?(sorry, posted above) If so that's why I never jumped on board with that. Good luck, hopefully you'll still be here on XDA.

Doesn't the Unlimited Plan include free roaming?? Where is there verbiage about "excessive roaming"??
that sucks. Unlike some ISP's for land lines which come to agreements so each can freely use the others networks, I don't think any wireless providers do anything of the sorts. While its ****ty they didnt give you a warning, i'm sure they were probably paying up the ass to verizon.
Well, best of luck to you!
Advice: search around here and see the threads on how to use your EVO on Boost Mobile.

Yeah the fine print. if you go read the official data usage section it states that no more than 300mb may be used per month. Hints why 4-5gb got your service dropped instantly. You just let Verizon run over sprint then reverse and run them over with that bill they had to pay.

Actually the 300MB is for data cards. There is no roaming limit. They will cancel you if the majority of your usage is roaming and towers over Sprints.
I'll keep my eye on the Bionic and the Thunderbolt. Hopefully Motorola will work with the community and not have locked bootloaders.
Correct the roaming is for minute usage not data. People get kicked for the talk not data. Data roaming booting applies to data cards as well not phones but you will be charged overages on phone data roaming.

That is not correct. I am being dropped for data roaming on my Evo. No charges or anything are being applied to it.
There is somewhat if a simple solution. Tell them you roam mostly at home and they will send you a free airave (you have to push to get it for free). Basically it is a small sprint tower that goes thru your local ISP. Ooonce powered up, about two hours) it works flawless.

If you log into your Sprint account and look under your plan details it says 500 mb of roaming data.
The EVO you wish you had
They say that there is such things that are "unlimited", but it's not really. They just set a cap so high that they believe no one will hit. Altell used to do this with their messaging plans.
It's kind of crappy that they're doing this to you, but I would avoid any Moto product unless the C-mod gets ported to it quickly. Motorola phones from what I've seen and used of them, are terrible. Moto Blur sucks, and build quality isn't bad but they have awkward builds. Decent battery life in them, and decent support for their high end devices. But that's about it.

Sprint "capping" data?

My cousin's boyfriend just bought 2 verizon stores and he is telling me that Sprint caps ur data limit to 5 GB a month, then limits ur download/upload after that limit (to like 2G speeds). Can anyone confirm this?
I know T-Mobile does, but never heard of Sprint, ATT, or Verizon doing it.

No, they do not.
Sprint only caps data to 5GB for the laptop computer modem cards. There is no cap policy for phone data.
However, if you're using super-huge amounts of data, like 20-50gb, some people have gotten letters asking them to lower that or they'll get relieved of their contract/service. I've used 10gb in a month before with no reprecussions (on SERO). It's considered "adversely affecting the network" (outlined in the contract -- every carrier has this clause).
they do not cap phone data.

They were just rumors back from the SERO threads.
I think the people in question were more in the 50-100GB range.
Over the last 18 months, I have consistently used 10Gb-15Gb a month and haven't had any speed issues with 4G where I work or 3G where I live. Haven't gotten any letters, either. Back when I had one of their 3G data cards, when it came time to re-up my contract, they took the 'unlimited' off their data card plan and put a 5Gb cap. Didn't effect the phone plans at all, though.

Sprint originally marketed the mobile broadband units as unlimited. I bought one in 2007. At some point they decided 5gb would be the limit. I refused to re-up just so that I could keep the unlimited terms. When I bought my Epic in October I knew I wouldn't need it anymore and told Sprint I was killing it off.
The rep even recognized that I was still on true unlimited and asked me if I was sure I wanted to drop it. i told him I would just use the phone for access. So of course he tried to sell me the hotspot app. Thanks, but no thanks.
There has been a bit of press on this topic because analysts are expecting all carriers to follow att's move in this area. My take: ATT means Absolutely Terrible Throughput.

You're paying for data, on your PHONE not to be shared with whatever other device you have, this is not a home ISP. That's like saying you're paying $50 a week for unlimited gas but you are filling up every car in your neighborhood. Not only will this cause gas prices to go up because you're abusing it but will also put an end to others getting this deal. Shame that people don't see this.

I am a former att customer that received that letter and warning. The only thing is I never teather! Ever! I have had an iphone, but years ago. I was at the time using a htc inspire on the unlimited. I use roughly 4-6gb a month on just my phone. I think why people are getting these is cause the amount of data people are using. I'm pretty sure that's why I got one. Just not really sure if they can really tell if your teathering or just basing it off usage.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App
Really it should be one or the other. Data cap or no tethering. If you are capped st 2gb who the hell cares if you tether. You go over it's your ass. If you have unlimited data and tether your laptop to run netflix and torrent the latest movies using 15gb+ every month then you deserve a kick in the balls.
I don't mind sprint's 30$ tether charge. it makes sense on an unlimited plan. if I need internet on other devices it's not a bad option for someone who wouldn't want to sign another contact for internet. And the 1mbps or so 3g I get here ain't bad for that.
I don't need it though and have used root to tether for free and though I have downloaded a couple movies with it (at the horrible 50-100kbps 3g in new mexico) I have yet to exceed 5gb.
I don't condemn using over 10gb a month on occasion but to consistently abuse sprint's unlimited data is just out right stealing.

Your small little observation means very little. A recent nationwide speed test found Sprint to be nearly dead last with all carriers, not just the big four.
Why am I mad? There was a day when Sprint used to do 1.5-2+ Mbps with ease in NYC. Ease. Sprints network is having a crunch right now and I'm lucky to get 750 kbps now. All you freeloading bastards aren't helping.

His comparison is right. Mobile data isn't finite. Its significantly more limited than land data. Control is needed to maintain a fast, stable mobile network. A network with unlimited data is no different and needs more control if anything. Your paying for service on your phone and nothing more.

Nationwide speed tests mean nothing to me, as I only plan on using my phone in limited areas anyway. This is why you should always test drive the network for the 30 days they give you, not just pick a phone on any carrier.
My speeds are consistently above 1mbps here in the Seattle area, not EVERYWHERE is having issues although it seems there are a lot who do.

They tested pretty much all major cities. None averaged more than 1 mbps but its worth noting that they hit peaks of over 2 mbps. The thing is that I can say that I hit 1.x mbps in NYC, and I have, but my average experience is significantly slower than that.
This test showed that not only were Sprints peaks slower but their averages were too. And this is in pretty much all major cities.
Their nationwide average taken from the testing of most major cities put Sprint in nearly last. This wasn't the first time they did these tests either. What this showed is that Sprint slowed significantly year to year.

Nuff said. But just in case.
short: It's not "theft of service". Sorry. Nothing is being stolen (go look up what steal/theft means). You might however, be in breach of contract. That's about it.

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse Admits Sprint Throttles Top 1% Of Data Users,

Unlimited data is slowly on its way to becoming a thing of the past here in the US, there's little denying it. Verizon and AT&T have full-fledged data "bucket" plans with usage caps. T-Mobile throttles users into 2G-oblivion if they exceed their "full-speed" data allotment. And now it appears Sprint, a company that has made its marketing bread and butter out of "truly unlimited," hasn't been entirely forthcoming about its management of the network's heaviest data users, particularly those in the top 1%.
CEO Dan Hesse said today that Sprint does actively throttle the top 1% of data users - a practice very similar to the one that Verizon customers were up in arms over when Big Red announced throttling would be applied to its legacy unlimited data customers who utilized over 2GB per month in "congested" 3G areas.
While not actually quoting a specific amount of data consumption that would put customers in that top 1%, Hesse's statement is a clear contradiction to the carrier's advertisements claiming that they remain the only network with "truly" unlimited data.
no throttling, no metering, no overages." Except that Hesse just admitted Sprint does throttle. There seems to be a disconnect between Sprint's marketing campaigns and the views of its CEO - something some people might call false advertising. I certainly would.
While I'm not of the opinion that throttling is necessarily a bad thing (faster data for everyone), when you're advertising your unlimited data network, and one of the premises of that advertisement is that it is truly, throttle-free, un-metered unlimited access, you should probably make sure that's actually true. If it's not, you're misleading consumers, and probably asking for a class-action lawsuit, to boot.

While that is a lie, I bet the 'top 1%' are those people that you see on here and post things like ' I pull 85gbs a month'.

I'm pretty sure some second reporter found that out, and called him on it.

How can anyone "abuse" roaming data with crappy 1x speeds. U can't even load a web page on that crap.

You can abuse it because Sprint allows 3G roaming in currently cities/regions. I know this for a fact because I've traveled around Oregon on the regular PRL and it has roamed on to 3G. Also 1x speeds are faster than my Sprint 3G speeds, sadly but true.

Are you sure you aren't seeing 935 B/s? lol
Yeah, I am not worried at all by this, not one bit if it stays to the top 1%. It is probably the type of people who use their phone as their home connection and use HUGE amounts of data downloading torrents n such.
I think that is a fine move for Sprint to save a little bit of money, that still keeps them in a better spot than any of the other companies.

I wish lol... Sadly but true, I live in a sub city outside los Angeles and my speeds on Sprint are horrible. Even with the recent network upgrades they hardly tech 100 kbps meanwhile 1x gives 100 to 189 kbps lol on roaming that is

If you guys been around long enough, youd probably have seen the `got out of contract for free` threads which as their stories went they either roamed on 1x or what not for an extended amount of time and either called sprint to ***** they no longer have reseption or got the letter from sprint saying good bye. Which ever their case was, sprint is referring to them saying if you do it youll receive throttling or good bye letter. Basically.
