Battery life on the S8? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I have owned the Galaxy S7 Edge ever since it came out and although I've used many, many phones over the years, both iOS and Android, I can say with absolute certainty that it is the best phone I've ever owned.
Unfortunately, the screen developed some sort of a pink line recently and I cannot do anything about it since I am not under warranty anymore, and I rooted the phone when I first purchased it so the warranty was voided from the start.
I am currently in the market for a new phone to replace it and my gut tells me I should go for the S8 even though I know it's not totally different and might not feel like a "new experience", however I already love how the phone looks and of course the performance on the S7 itself is stellar, so I'm sure it'll be even better on the S8.
My only concern is the battery life, though. I am targeting the regular S8, not the S8 Plus, and I read that the battery is 3000 mAh while the S7 Edge's has 3500 mAh and a smaller screen which is absurd! I don't want to have to buy the Plus for the battery because it's just too big, so what do you guys think about the battery life on the regular S8, at least in comparison to the S7 Edge's?
Thanks

I had a G930F S7 Exynos before I switched to the G950F S8 Exynos. The S7 I usually got around 4.5 to 5 hours of SOT with location, Bluetooth and 75% display power. On the S8 I'm currently getting 7.5 to 8 hours SOT with the same setup. Mind you I have sync and wifi off at all times.
The S8 is a great phone. Though I can't judge the snapdragon since I have the Exynos model.

@chungdae Thank you for your reply. I have the Exynos version as well, we never actually got the Snapdragon version over here. That sounds really good and now I feel a bit better about making that decision. I feel like 5.5 to 5.8" screen is a perfect transition, whereas 6+ is just way too huge.

Yea in my opinion the size of the S8 is perfect the plus was just too big for me. There's a lot of tweaks you can do if you want to squeeze every minute of screen on time but for me it wasn't necessary. Most people receive 6+ hours normally

I used to try all those different kernel tweaks and such with the S7 but I realized they were doing more harm than good, so I just let the default settings be and things have been good ever since.

I haven't used the S7 Edge, but I'm really happy with my S8's battery life (I have the Snapdragon variant).
I get around 8 hours of SOT, and can leave my phone off the plug for at least 24 hours, if not more when used less frequently. This is on stock, with a few things disabled (Lookout, some Samsung apps).
Here are some photos.

I have no idea how people are getting 8hrs SOT on the s8+. I'm lucky of I reach 5hrs. What are the secrets? I have Snapdragon version btw

I have around 9 hours screen on time on stock firmware, really happy with result.

Android Doze?

Based on previous threads on Android OS battery drain, I am curious if Doze (new deep sleep feature in Android 6.0) is even functional on this phone. I own a Nexus 6p also and it works great and is clearly visible in the battery graphs after a good nights rest. So far, this phones battery is not as good as iPhone 6s Plus or Nexus 6p. Yes, I have new phone syndrome so I won't make a full judgment yet but early signs are pretty evident. It wouldn't surprise me if Samsungs poor optimization of its OS is basically negating this feature.
My battery life is something special to be honest.. I think I've put it on the charger once since I got it on friday.. I do however turn off things like the gestures, always on display, nfc, etc.. but the battery is looking pretty good for me especially compared to the s6

Didn't use the S6 but understand the battery life was god awful. I may just be spoiled by the iPhone 6s Plus. But even comparing this phone to the Nexus 6p, battery life just isn't as good. That's the single most important thing to me.
Try disabling some of the junk you don't use every day

S7 battery life vs S7 Edge

So originally i had the S7, unfortunately it got stolen. So I purchase the S7 Edge, but when I had the S7 my battery life was awesome. I went about 2 days and the battery would still have like 20% left. Now with the S7 Edge I'm losing battery so fast it's ridiculous. You would think with a bigger battery it would last longer. Anyone else having poor battery life also?
Both my S7 and S7 Edge had the exact same apps and I used it the exact same
When I first had the S7 Edge I would easily get 5 hours + of screen on time. Now I'm getting just under 4 hours.
Hopefully a software update will fix it.

That is absolutely horrible...I'll tell ya one thing...you just said you downloaded everything on it? All your accounts and apps and crap right? Well your phone is going to do that. Give it a couple days and see how it goes. You must have some Rouge apps running in the background...download shutapp and your golden. Just remember your phone will die with heavy to moderate use. I Mean you can't prevent it from dying lol. I used to have bad battery life. Now I'm good. I watch what I install closely though. I check there permissions. If you have a smart watch a lot of apps tend to run in the background. With shutapp you identify them and decide if you really need them.

S8 vs S8+ battery life comparision

Anybody find any links to S8 vs S8+ battery life comparison? I want the S8 for size in my pocket and easy to reach fingerprint scanner. Want to see tests of the S8 vs S8+ vs S7 Edge battery life comparison...
I cancelled my preorder to wait for battery life reviews, bigger screens and higher resolution and same sized battery (smaller for s8+ than s7e) doesn't seem like the processor will be able to offset the drain. And also wondering if the exynos will be more efficient with battery life than sd as last year was. I use to have sd820 s7e and now I'm using international exynos s7e and do wish I originally bought the international one

Phone arena did some testing and found that it comes out on top over the S7E. It also beat the Pixel XL and Oneplus 3T. Of course people need to do there own testing to be sure.
It's not just the SoC being more efficient that can save battery. Displaymate.com have noted that the panel is not only better but also more energy efficient. The software is no doubt better optimised and that can also mean battery savings. Anyway, in the tests in ran for 8 hours which isn't bad. Add fast charging and it's fine for most people.
Next time I do hope they increase capacity, I don't want slimmer phones, I would prefer a larger battery. We never seem to benefit from improved power efficiency, it's always more of the same. They have supposedly improved the battery tech in the S8, it should hold charge better over time. We might only lose 5% over a year instead of 20%. That is better in the long run.
I think they purposely made the battery small to prevent the chance of phone explosion, that is absolutely the last thing they need right now and I don't think they want to risk that., but I'm rooting for the s8/s8+ to have great battery life. I'm hoping the battery stats r near identical between the two models so I can get the smaller s8 and not feel like I got jipped on battery life, and I read some early test that the 8895 exynos will be better than snapdragon.

Want to know the PROS and CONS of the Samsung Galaxy S8's battery

Hello everyone,
I want to know the PROS and CONS of the Samsung Galaxy S8's battery. I am currently a Samsung Galaxy S7 user and I am thinking to make an upgrade. I always wanted a phone to have a heavy battery life as I am a heavy user.
Also let me know if the phone charges faster compared to the S7.
Thanks in advance, it is my first time posting here

Hey Shajjadur,
Welcome to the XDA!
The Galaxy S8 charges quickly, not necessarily any faster than the Galaxy S7, but 15 minutes will give you circa 20% battery life, almost 50% in around 30 minutes and a full charge takes about 80 minutes. Wireless charging isn’t as quick, but it still charges far faster than an iPhone.
Here are pros and cons -
Pros: Better than it should be, fast wired and wireless charging, promises of long term safety and performance
Cons: Disappointing battery capacity, reduced resolution required for all day stamina, generationally a backwards step
S7 battery capacity after one year is 80% of new. S8 battery capacity after one year is 95% of new according to Samsung.
I got a killer mobile battery charger can do at least 5 full charges so never concerned anymore about battery life lol.
Example used my phone all day yesterday. Took pics used net etc and did small chargers now and then kept me alive all day and night.
Also it's fast charge too.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Huawei Mate 20, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Huawei Mate 20 is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I've received my Mate 20 pro in Twilight colour. Got it yesterday, but I'm holding off on it until the weekend to play with it. Here in Norway in does not come with the clear case unfortunatly, but I've ordered a few to come soon hopefully.
it's so quiet in here...mate 20 is under-rated
It's not underated but few people of xda would buy because of lock bl.. anyway expecting mine on friday..

Where did you get yours? Same situation here also from Norway. I find some on various websites but its only the 4GB model. Is yours too or did you get the 6GB one?
I got it a few days ago and I am seriously impressed overall, especially with the hardware.
Previously I had a HTC 10 which I loved dearly, but was betrayed by a fast degrading battery (see HTC 10 forum, 90% of threads are about it). It got to the point where i had to permanently dock the phone to a bank because it could no longer hold a charge.
This thing though, oh boy. The fact that I don't have to charge it for 2 days is enough of a reason for me to love it. I need to get used to how big phones are these days, I've already dropped it once trying to lock the phone with one hand starting with a grip on the upper half of the phone (I know, real awkward, had doritos grease on the other hand). I can barely toss a ball in pokemon go now because it's so weird moving my finger the extra distance. I've also had to scale down all the UI elements so my eyes can read everything more easily like my last phone.
It's a ton of fun though. I will be sure to look after this thing's health more than my HTC, with greenify and a native Android Oreo OS, I hope I don't have to change phones for a long time.
Best phone ever
Have been using it for 24 hrs now. Comming from a OnePlus 6 the battery is amazing and I love the camera! Great phone overall.
Yep, got one last weekend also (Midnight Blue) and coming from a 2 year old Galaxy S7 Edge I'm blown away by the battery life! I'm at 9h of SOT after 1 day and 19h off the charger and I'm still at 28% LOL! It's almost indecent, that's what it is! And this is just my first charge... I happily give up wireless charging for this kind of battery performance. The S7 Edge barely gets 4h of SOT and something like 30h before dying. And it's not just the battery capacity, it's also about the OS optimization which the Samsung messed up about 1 year ago.
Although still not a perfect device, it does some things so well (impressive battery, remarkable screen - I'm looking at it next to my S7 Edge and I can't believe it's an LCD!, tiny notch, superb - I'd say flawless - construction) that in my opinion brings it closer to 5 stars than to 4 stars

I agree, battery life is insane on this phone. I tracked my battery consumption for one month using AccuBattery. On average I had a 4% drop in battery life for every screen on hour. The corresponding number for OnePlus 6T was 7%. Everything on this phone is top notch except EMUI.

Yes, that's more or less what GSam Battery Monitor shows me, around 4-5% battery usage during screen on. At the same time I get around 4% battery drain per 48h due to wakelocks, mostly Play Store Services localisation (GPS always on).
Useful information about the 6T by the way. I almost got that one for the OS and the in-screen fingerprint scanner, but I couldn't get pass the much higher than average SAR value. I expected the Mate 20 to have better battery life than the 6T (even with its LCD screen), but I didn't expect it to be this good.

I actually think Mate 20 is superior OP6T in almost every way except the user interface. I bought a used OP6T since I was dissatisfied with EMUI on Mate 20. However, after using OP6T a couple of days I sold it and went back to Mate 20 for the following reasons.
- As already mentioned, the battery life is clearly better on Mate 20.
- Mate 20 is the prettier phone, smaller bezels and overall nicer looking compared to OP6T.
- Speed is more or less the same but I felt that Mate 20 was slightly faster when opening apps.
- The rear camera is slightly better on Mate 20. Probably due to the large 1.55um pixels on the main rear sensor on Mate 20. I also missed the ultra wide angle sensor on OP6T.
- I like the screen quality better on Mate 20. Blacks are deeper on OP6T due to AMOLED but bright backgrounds look better on Mate 20 and I also felt that the screen on Mate 20 was more crisp and vibrant.
- The screen size is clearly larger on Mate 20 due to 6,53 inch and 18:7 aspect ratio. The screen on OP6T is too narrow and do not feel that much larger than a regular 6 inch 18:9 screen.
The hardware design of Mate 20 with the UI of OP6T would more or less be the perfect smartphone.
I got this one yesterday, very good phone... Good price relation and a nice breezel....
