How can I downgrade my XC from N to MM without unlocking the BL? - Sony Xperia X Compact Questions & Answers

Hi, I want to backup my TA/DRM key. However the "Universal (Dirtycow-based) TA Backup v2" seems not compatible with Android Nougat. It asked me to downgrade my device first. Is there a way to downgrade Xperia X Compact without unlocking it (or without losing the DRM key)? Thanks.

Just use the flashtool, you don't need to be unlocked to flash firmware.

Another question. My phone is showing up "Bootloader unlock allowed: No" in the Service Menu. I've already turn on "OEM unlocking" and "USB debugging" (
authorized, and confirmed all the necessary drivers were installed).
The "Unlock your boot loader" site is saying that "It will only be possible to unlock the boot loader for certain releases." Does that means I should flash another firmware with differnt region or Android version? I've already tried to downgrade my phone to MM again, however the issue still exists. Thanks.
P.s. I am able to get the unlock code from the "Unlock your boot loader" site.

If your phone says that is is NOT allowed... sorry, but it is not possible.
Even though Sony is happy for us to unlock the bootloader, if the carrier/operator (verizon, o2, virgin, etc) wants - these companies can ask Sony to stop the bootloader from being unlocked.
Sim lock is one thing... at least that can be removed. I have no idea why they would choose to prevent the bootloader from being unlocked.
Actually, maybe because in some countries the consumer laws are very good, so even if you root or something, your warranty still exists.
But if you cannot unlock the bl -> you can't root -> less device problems/bricks -> less money on repairs for the phone operator? (just an idea)
The first (used) Xperia X Compact I bought, it was carrier branded, and the bootloader was unable to be unlocked.
I talked to the shop owner, I chose the other device in stock, it was unbranded, I could unlock it

Thanks for your answer. Though it's a bad news for me. [emoji30]

Since it's impossible to unlock my device, can I just modify the FTF and flash it through the Flashtool? If it's possible, then how to modify the FTF file? I want to change the font into another.

No. If you've still got time to return it do so now otherwise your modding is going to be limited.

[Q] Need Confirmation Please

Around last week when I first got my carrier locked Xperia PLAY, I purchased a network unlock code which I was able to unlock it with. So, then I flashed it with the UK Generic .184 FTF file with FlashTool to get rid of all the junk that my carrier included with it and rooted it using the GingerBreak APK.
Now, my question is, since I've network unlocked my PLAY, completely debranded it and rooted it, would I be able to unlock my bootloader now? From what I've read, since my device was originally locked from my carrier, that it never had Fastboot installed on it, which is needed to unlock my bootloader. But I also read that being able to unlock the bootloader on my Xperia PLAY shouldn't even matter because it's already set to S=OFF. Could someone please enlighten me on this?
You can't unlock your bootloader with the current method, it depends on two things: can your phone connect with fastboot when in bootloader mode AND is your IMEI number registered with SE to get the required unlockcode.
No you can only unlock GSM phones ie sim fee none network locked ones, unlocking the sim carrier wont count sadly

Yes, I went to their How-To page on the SE Developer's site and was able to get an unlock code by providing my IMEI and other info. When I try to detect it with Fastboot and my PLAY in bootloader mode, Fastboot just hangs at <waiting for device>.

Cool, thanks for confirming that!
But does it even matter if I'm able to unlock my bootloader? Because I've read somewhere that the PLAY's are set to S=OFF.
From my understanding an unlocked bootloader is necessary for costum roms, if you're content with root and themes unlocking the bootloader won't be that important to you I guess.
I'm pretty content with being able to install custom themes with it only rooted. But I want to be able to overclock it, and that involves flashing a custom kernel to be able to do so, correct?

afraid so (as it stands atm) there probably will be a way to flash without an unlock at some point though.

Bootloader Unlock Tip

Hey All,
I've seen some posts stating that the bootloader for this phone can't be unlocked.
I'm using the E6533 model and wanted to confirm that it is possible.
Just go to this website: http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/ (the official sony one)
Select Xperia Z3 as the model (I know we have the Z4/Z3+ but it still works). Enter your email and click the link they email you.
Insert the IMEI number and they will give you the unlock code. then just run
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock <code>
and it will work.
As a note this WILL wipe your device, so backup anything you may need on it.
Hopefully with this we can get root / twrp built
So TA backup is needed to keep the DRM keys before unlocking the bootloader. Is there a way to back up TA of non-rooted devices? Flashtool doesn't fully support Z3+ yet.

Quick question , what to do if you have Unlock allowed: No?
Generally speaking this always meant just what it says... That it's not possible to unlock the bootloader. This was often the case with oem phones. Today it could also mean you have myxperia security activated. If you have log out of that and try again.
Oh and do not activate it after unlocking bootloader, you could brick your device for good!

Make sure you don't have the xperia security software enabled (the find my iPhone equivalent)
It prevents the bootloader from being unlocked. Otherwise it means your carrier disabled the feature
Thanks diemadedrei and ChrisJ951.
It worked, it was the Xperia Security software that was enabled.
Rooting status: unknown
Hello, i tried to unlock my BL from the sony website, but after i flashed the code in my phone, it just restored and now just says rooting status: unknown and also the option of unlock allowed does not even appear! anybody could please help me?
thanks and hello from Mexico!
The z3+ is now selectable on the unlock page officially
@bryantronics: it should say bootloader unlocked yes under rooting status. Generally it should have worked if everything went as described.

Thanks to all, I have tried to change it to "YES" 24 hours
OK so with this recent tidbit of data that a bootloader unlock no could become a yes I am concerned. When I bought the phone it said yes. But no where can I figure out if the DRM keys are a)original b)intact c) working with this present rom. Could anyone tell me so I can be sure that if I resell this item I don't misrepresent this information.
haist i have a same problem for that issue ...until now i can not flash boot img...please resolve this problem...guys plssssss......
i have the same problem i cant flash img due to remoted lock state: unlocked
any updates?
I am suffering the same problems as my colleagues in the previous posts. I cannot get the bootloader unlock, no matter how hard I try:
performed the official Sony way (using minimal adb and fastboot; phone is listed in fastboot devices; "remote: command not allowed")
flashtool64: both with blu manually and by leaving the text file in the registered devices folder (which was found and used for a unlock, which turned out not to be successful).
Sony MyDevices is not activated. Android 5.0.2 (E6533; 28 0 A 8 272 HK)
Do you have any further tips how to open the bootloader?
thx, Benedikt

Unable to unlock Moto E3 (XT1700) (TESCO UK)

Hi,
So I recently got my hands on this new phone, and the blimming phone won't unlock. I'm using the XT1700!!! Not E3 Power!. It's on TESCO UK, and the System Version is "23.0.XT1700_S303_160829_UK". Yes, in developer options, OEM Unlocking is ticked! Tried two PCs, different drivers, different cables... idk.
I get the output on my phone to unlock with both "flashing unlock_critical" and "oem unlock"; both say "Unlock failed, returning to fastboot in 3s..."
This is the output in CMD:
Code:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot>fastboot oem unlock
...
(bootloader) Start unlock flow
FAILED (remote:
Unlock operation is not allowed
)
finished. total time: 7.803s
Any suggestions? I'm really not sure.

Yeah.
My E3 XT1700 was purchased from Tesco but its sim free, not locked to tesco.
I'm pretty sure if you read elsewhere in the unlock bootloader thread, the S303 firmware DOES NOT allow the bootloader to be unlocked.
My E3 is S124 firmware, although I have been running Lineage OS 14.1 (android 7.1.2) on it for some time.
Sorry but there's no way you can unlock this model

Its really not worth the hastle.
S124 isn't available anywhere to download unless you pay for it, but you got to unlock the bootloader before you can flash it, as its only available as a TWRP back up.
I lost my IMEI number doing that and had to flash an S131 E3 power firmware and reflash my IMEI which wasn't easy at all.
I've just checked and S303 and S512 are indeed bootloader locked.

Not unless you find one if these "one click root" apps via PC that supposedly magically root.
Its a shame these bootloaders cannot be advertised as not unlocking compatible, it would have saved you a lot of trouble.
Do try everything although to be fair, I've not seen anyone post about unlocking those two firmwares.

Why would you want to relock it? But if you wish to do so, you'll need to firstly enable developer options, once done go to settings then developer options, then you will see oem unlock, if that switch is to the right then boot loader is unlocked, to relock bootloader just press and move so that switch is to th3 left

You're mixing up two different things, oem unlock that unlocks the bootloader is disabled on the g950f, you have to enabled it yourself. The unlock code is for carrier locks, totally different thing. You might as well root it now and use magisk to hide root from netflix.

Now that I've rooted it using Magisk, the device is "certified"

Look and unlock bootloader with official method

In other posts there is procedure , for device with bootloader unlocked with unofficial method, for look and unlook officially, but is confused and in other arguments.
Is possible have this post for this argument, with clear guide , because I think is important question.
This maybe procedure:
1. miflash to official China Beta rom first. Flash without relock.
1b. Download from PC VPN app, install on phone and set connection to China. Then you are able to active usb developer options
2. re-lock bootloader with official China Beta rom. Flash and relock.
3. unlock bootloader again with official China Beta rom. Need to tie up with Mi account and insert a SIM card. For me, need to wait for 720 hours before MM3 can be unlocked. I checked chinese miui forum. This apparently is a new requirement. One full month later. Gosh...
4. miflash to official Global rom and stop there.
5. Do not re-lock bootloader with official Global rom""
I don't try this procedure......
What's the point of looking the bootloader just to get it unlocked again after whatever hours waiting!?
Do you experience problems with the device being unlocked unofficialy? Or this is just another "good advice/info" coming from MIUI forums...
Be happy somebody already took care of that and enjoy the unlocked bootloader freedom you get.

The device comes unlocked but your Mi account has not permission to unlock this specific device because you never followed the official unlock procedure.
Xiaomi with its new policy does not let you use a Chinese version of a phone with a global rom and a locked bootloader. If you flash the global rom and for some reason the bootloader gets locked, your phone will stuck on the recovery with the following message "this miui version cannot be installed on this device", at this stage you must unlock the bootloader to be able to boot again, if the bootloader was unlocked officialy with you own account, you can use the mi unlock tool to unlock again and make the phone bootable, if the bootloader was unofficialy unlocked or unlocked by other account, in this case you can't unlock with the Mi unlock tool, you can't flash another rom since the bootloader is locked, you can't follow the official unlock procedure because you are stuck in recovery, the only solution is to use the test point method with EDL authorized account
Ok, I guess sounds reasonable for majority of the users.
But me personally? I could care less...
You can backup bootloader unlocked status and restore it if locked by accident...

Oh right, now I remember. This was that very big announcement. Completely forgot. Thanks for the reminder. Yes, then test point is the only option, unfortunately.
Again, this was why I urged people to steer clear of global and stick to Eu roms. More harm than good especially related to such situations (many new flashers accidentally locking bootloaders).

4. With the test-point method you can flash the chinese rom even if the bootloader is locked, after succesfully flashing the china rom you have to apply for official unlock, after getting the unlock permission you can flash global rom by leaving the bootloader unlocked.
XiaomiTool official page is proposing another solution but you need to wait for a global dev rom to be released and it is not guaranteed to work
If you get the message "this miui can't be installed on this device" and your device is bricked you might be able to recover it using xiaomiadb by first installing global developer and then installing china developer OF SAME VERSION (for example 8.8.16->8.8.16) using "xiaomiadb sideload_miui -otarom CurrentRom [ZIP_ROM_FILE]"

hello all, if someone can help me, i have my mi max3 with locked bootloader.
now i dont have any rom on it so trying to load a rom but getting an error ERASE is not allowed in locked state
what rom can i flash on it ?
tried to unlock bootloader via the tool, it gets stuck at 50% cannot verify phone.
had the same problem, was able to recover it with the test point method and flashing chinese rom, and switching to english language.
the procedure is described here:
https://androidfilebox.com/tips/edl-test-point-mode-redmi-note-4x/
the installation process of the qualcom drivers is special.
you have to open te backcover, which is very special too, dont forget to the 2 mini screws at the usb port and the drawer on the side . search and look on youtube.
look further, where the testpoints are on the mi max3
follow strictly the procedure, load and double extract the chinese rom for the mi max 3.
It is real work, and real danger that you break something mechanical, one shoud have a calm hand and a lot of patience, but for me all went good and the phone spang to live again.
Another solution could be this, but I have no experience with it:
