Returning my U11 - Unable to make or receive calls - HTC & VZW blame each other - HTC U11 Guides, News, & Discussion

Pre-ordered a Ull to replace the M8 I've had since it came out.
Put in my M8 SIM and everything worked great, but the M8 was still listed under "My Devices" on the VZW site and the U11 wasn't an activation option.
A couple of days later the mobile data started getting wonky so I stopped by the Verizon store. The guy there thought it might be an issue with the old cut-down SIM card (originally from my Droid Maxx) so he activated a new SIM on my M8 since the U11 still wasn't showing up as a device option
Switched the card to the U11, it showed up under "My Devices" registered on the network, but would not make or receive calls. Texts would go through, but the phone showed them as being "failed".
After several back & forthes between VZW & HTC support Verizon says that the phone is activated and everything is properly set up on both ends, but the network sees the phone as turned off. HTC says they've had a lot of complaints about this sort of thing and I can't make or receive calls because 'Verizon doesn't know how to properly activate an LTE only phone". The VZW folks have gone way beyond minimum requirements while the HTC people have been unhelpful and obviously just following a script.
So, I got a RMA from HTC and shipped my U11 back. I'll stick with my rooted M8, running Venom, until it bites the dust. But I probably won't replace it with another HTC phone.

So did I.
I hated to see it go, but the Verizon techs went way beyond what I expected, especially since I didn't buy the phone from Verizon, while the HTC chat person was a childish, rude and flat-out lied and I could barely understand the HTC phone lady who was obviously just reading off of a script. C'mon, the largest cell phone carrier in the country doesn't know how to activate a phone?

I'm in Australia and bought an unlocked U11. Which can be used on any Aussie network.
We don't have the Verizon thing where you have to select the device before using it.
Try another carriers sim and if it works then something in VZW is hindering it.

This much we already know...
There seems to be a problem with some devices not working on Verizon's network.
So far there is no solution.
Some seem to get on without issues.
I connected right away and was happy for 2 days.
I've been booted off the Verizon network since.
Sending this device back tomorrow for a refund.
I can not afford a Wi-Fi only device that can not make calls.
Until Verizon fixes this problem I'll sit and wait.
I only want my HTC U11 to work.
Verizon needs to fix this.
Not that much to ask for.

HTC said they are working on a firmware update to address this, but who knows when that will come to fruition. Other than this, I have no useful information to update with.

Can you pop your sim card back into your M8 and use for a few days, then pop back into the U11.
The carriers can tell what device you are using ( 1st least in Australia) and may be blocking it only when you registered it. Since you mentioned it worked prior you registering the phone.

Nexus 6 released on Verizon February 26th ?

obviously take this with a huge grain of salt, but just had a live chat with VZW rep to ask about the N6. I do this randomly just to see what kind of (non) answers I get.
However, this dude fired back with an exact date of February 26th. That date is on a Thursday, which is traditionally the day that Verizon launches new phones. Just struck me odd that he had such a specific answer, and went on to say that he had just recently been given the information.
Of course I've tried to live chat again three times since then, and each one of the reps said that they have no information about the N6 lol.
Take it for what it's worth.

Lol only 4 months after every other provider. Just enough time to load it up with bloat and bugs.
on a sidenote, anyone know why I can't upload an image?
very frustrating.

I was also informed today and "assured" by a verizon rep (via chat) that they would be getting the Nexus 6 on February 26. They also said that the Samsung Note Edge would be coming out January 8th. I guess that will be the first test of this reps information.
My money is on April 1st.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that the note edge will be released on january 8th for verizon...no word on the nexus 6 for sure but i have also heard february 26th
Eh, i am not going to believe any rep. As far as this goes, i worked for Tmobile and ATT customer support and we where never really told anything ahead of time from everyone else. We where told to keep customers either happy or holding on with the company. It has been a few years ago from that though, so i dont know if that policy has changed. :good:

A poster on Reddit said he was told at a corporate store the same thing. The rep, after looking it up, said the computer was showing February 26th availability.
and i just asked and was told there is no scheduled release. thats pretty far ahead for a release date anyway.
i just asked two reps and i got nothing out of either one of them
I just want VoLTE already on my Nexus. No voice and data simultaneously is a bit annoying and per usual is probably because of Waiting for Verizon release their version.
Nexus 6 currently on Verizon Network
I recently bought the Nexus 6 and is currently running on the Verizon Network. Originally, the local Verizon dealer refused to add the Nexus 6 phone to the network since it was not a "Verizon Phone". My philosophy is, "Never let a multi multi multi billion dollar tech company tell what they cant do". By saying this, I called the Verizon Tier 2 support and they were able to activate the phone from their location bought using the same simcard number that was used from my Note 2 phone. Now, after two days, I was booted off the Verizon network and was told via message that I need to sign back on the Verizon network. After a few days corresponding with tier 2 tech support, the reason for the booting off the system was i was using a new "nano simcard" which resulted in a new simcard number. Originally, they recommended that i find someone with a new Motorola phone and activate my simcard through their phone ( long story) and then re-transfer back to the new simcard for the Nexus 6 to work but that greatly avoided. As a result, my Nexus 6 is currently working without any problems . Lastly, they will have to submit a "DMD Form" to "register" your non-Verizon phone. Hope this helps.

That sounds like too much work and a big hassle just to stay with a carrier. Its reminiscent of when I had Verizon a few year ago.
I wonder if VZW will try to lock down the Nexus and if Google will let them.
Sorry for the newbie question.
When you said you cut the (VZW) Sim card and inserted it, the phone booted up and you started using it as simple as that?

I think China may get the phone before Verizon.

Yes, that simple. I am with VZW. I had a Galaxy S3 with a Micro SIM. I picked up a punch on Amazon (I didn't trust trying to use scissors but many people have success with them) ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FW70ZF6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ).
I got my N6, unlocked it, decrypted it, rooted it, transferred apps via Titanium Backup, and then punched the SIM and moved it from the GS3 to the N6. Booted up and it worked. Have not had any problems at all. *knock* *knock*
A Verizon nexus is NOT a nexus. Is just another fully OEM Verizon locked device.

If bought directly from Verizon.. Yes locked boot loader with modified software/firmware tampered trip counter and of course Verizon proprietary bloatware.
The online chat reps are the worst... If it is really true that VZW will carry it on 2/26 add another one to two months cause of supply issues + VZW tramp stamp time.

Will Verizon try to interfere with Moto Pure?

Not seeing Verizon being amicable with this device the more I think about it and would not be surprised to see Verizon not part of the network. They are big, arrogant and like all the bloat to help drive data mining and other service revenue the bloat gives them. The precedent this sets if were successful is not in Verizon's best interests of bloat bait. Sure, you would think Verizon is still raking in the monthly service fees, but they love their bloat.
The Droid Maxx 2 (aka Moto X Play) has added to my perhaps overly cynical view of the situation.
Verizon isn't selling this phone, so they can't interfere with it. Motorola is selling it directly, and as far as I know it's already a fact that it will work with Verizon. If it's like the Nexus 6 at launch though, it will work fine by swapping SIMs, but it may not work immediately to activate new service on.
Received mine yesterday. Active SIM recognized VZW, but wouldn't activate. Tier 2 tech support had to manually enter, maybe take 8 hrs, so they say... :/

Original uncut nanoSIM from a Moto Nexus 6 (AMZN/VZW), which I didn't keep - horrible experience all-around.
While the Moto XP so far gives me some reminder, I like the Moto suite a lot. Have had some limited heat from
charging the battery, but that has always happened to me first time around. It goes away after a cycle or two
of discharge/charge. VZW is still clueless re: BYOD IMHO, and I think I knew more than the in-store rep w/ 11 yrs exp.

They might not be able to interfere (as much) but they certainly don't seem any more prepared for BYOD, IMHO. They didn't appear willing earlier today, but I held their feet to the fire,
esp. since I'm off contract in two months, which I reminded them of - as well as the fact that this device works with any major US carrier.
Saw an unboxing and the guy had no issues at all with VZW and then there's this to add credibility...

I was able to use my Straight Talk Verizon sim with my Moto X. When I talked with ST support they claimed it wouldn't work. I wasn't able to register the Moto X on the website with my IMEI it was forcing me to GSM activation. I activated the sim using another phone's serial, popped the sim in my Moto X, it got stuck on the activating wireless screen, but when I rebooted it connected to Verizon LTE and voice.
I popped my SIM in from my droid Maxx. Initially it worked, but then didn't. Then went to a corporate store that swore there was nothing they can do. Will next try an authorized retailer. GRRRRRR!

This all sounds like its going to be a pain in the butt to get activated on VZW. I have a N6 that i was planning to sell and if i just swap the sim dont think ill be able to sell it. VZW is always a pain in the butt with this stuff, i only wish there service wasnt better then most by me
I went to Verizon and they tried activating but no luck. Came home and cut my micro sim from my HTC One M7 and popped it in. Working just fine now.
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
They WILL need to activate the sim using a diff phone's imei. Just tell the rep that's what needs to be done, if he doesn't attempt it himself. So far no issues.
Sent from my XT1575
After the corporate store debacle I went to an authorized seller store. They were much nicer. He suggested we take the SIM out of my Maxx, put it back in the pure and then turn the pure back on. Voila, so far it has worked. This morning when I put the SIM in I didn't power down and then turn the phone back on fwiw.

Someone in moto forums said to activate a nano sim without IMEI number he did it with rep on the phone.
Did you try that?

Are you locked to 3G? Check this out.

Alright ladies and gents, after not following instructions and activating my Note 4 (with a MM rom ported from another device) which seemed to have TMobile info on it I was locked to 3G.
Didn't matter what modem, or any flashes even to stock firmware, it was locked.
Don't go buy a new SIM!
Just open chat with Verizon and tell them the basics. They don't like you calling on the broken device even if your data works like mine.
"Hi my name is X X and I am stuck on 3G.
It's been like this the past few days. I've followed online instructions to reset the device to factory and even tried updating however 3G remains.
My data is not limited in the settings, is below my data cap and MMS/Phonecalls plus internet work fine. Just no LTE/4G service.
The sim is less than a year old."
At this point they'll likely suggest going to get a new one, at cost to you.
I disagree. Try this;
"My wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend/partner/friend had this issue when we changed states, the support agent we spoke with online said they would "reprovision" I believe the sim or phone and after rebooting the device the data came back."
They'll more than likely try it, and after following their instructions - double check your data settings.
Make sure your APN is correct as well as network mode. Global is usually okay but I stick with LTE/WCDMA.
This is not a fix for every phone, just my diapproval with having to pay for a new sim in store or pay a silly 10$+ charge online to ship a "free" sim to me when a free fix is just as good and immediate. This is just a recount of my actions.
Hope this helps someone!
I walked right into my local verizon store, told the sales rep I needed a new sim card and that it was "a long story". Five minutes later I walked with a new sim, back on 4G, and didn't spend a dime.
I highly recommend this route.

I called them up and they sent me a new sim next day air with no charge. Even told me I could go grab one at the VZ store down the street if I didn't want to wait.
You sure you walked into an actual Verizon store? Maybe phishing has gone real world.
I haven't actually used the sim yet. 4G came back afew hours after the call. They re-provisioned my phone, mauve it just took a little time to refresh through the network.

At any Verizon corporate store, you will not be charged for a SIM card. Authorized retailers (Best Buy, cellularsales.com, etc) will usually charge for the SIM card unless you can prove you purchased the phone from them. Some authorized retailers can seem like a Verizon corporate store at first.
OK, I give up on trying to flash MM Roms on the Note 4. I lost 3g AND GPS this time. Guess I will be calling VZ tomorrow

I wanted to keep it...

Once I got the phone setup and on the Sprint network I tried a test SMS to someone. They replied and the message came in. Then it repeated itself over and over indefinitely. I had someone else send me a SMS message but that message never came through. I received the last message that was sent once again.
Countless hours on the phone with Sprint escalated through tech support. Took it back to the store. They tried to "flash" it but could not. Swapped out for another Essential Ph-1 and it did the same thing.
I told them to keep it. It has caused enough stress in my life for years at this point.
Curious, there have been a few random issues (not just on Sprint) that have turned out to be APN related. Do you know if they checked the APN settings and verified they were correct for their network? I changed a couple settings on TMobile to match what their recommendation is on their website and I know a couple AT&T people have had to change a thing or two as well.

This is entirely speculation, but it could be on either Sprint's side or the Messenger app itself. What you describe mirrors my experience with my unlocked Galaxy S8 and using the Messenger app. I switched that line over to the Essential phone it started working fine with text messages. If you try again in the future, try disabling the advanced SMS features (called RDS I think?).

Thank you, appreciate the advice.
I work for sprint and this is an uncommon issue that has plagued the network for years. If your phone is not rooted, a simple profile update can fix this. One common issue we have seen with the essential phones bought through sprint is it not activating fully the first time. After the phone says it's activated still go through the settings, tap about, tap "OMADM updates" and click profile update. It was reprovision the phone correctly and reboot again. Sometimes it gets stuck on the last step. As long as the reception goes blank and then comes back with a LTE logo then you are done and can reboot the phone.
I know you already went with another phone but you could just as easily have the same issues on another phone. This comment is more for those who are looking for answers to your issue.

Very much appreciate the reply. I have not gone with a different phone because I am not really interested in any others at this time.
I did try what you suggested on both of the essential phones. It did not work on either.
I will probably go back by the Sprint store tomorrow to see if they figured anything out.
I cannot be without a phone and I do not currently have time to troubleshoot one that is not working.
I will keep chugging along with my old phone for the time being.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
To be clear, Sprint Technical Support is so close to useless you might as well ask your dog how to fix your phone. You'd get the same quality of information and save yourself some time to boot. This is not necessarily Sprint's fault. It's very likely that Essential isn't giving them enough information. For example, I was trying to get files transfered from my PC to my Essential Phone earlier today. All I got was an big empty nothing telling me "This Folder is Empty." Figured it was something very simple but I couldn't figure out what. Sprint's second level support told me to call HP (computer OEM). Came onto this forum and somebody mentioned "just change the setting in notifications from charging to file transfer." Yep! It really was that easy! And Sprint should have easy fixes like that extremely well documented.
It makes me more that a little nervous to realize that Sprint is completely clueless about this phone and that Essential is next to impossible to get in touch with. Makes me wish I could have held out for the other Sprint exclusive coming soon: The LG V30+. Same 128GB internal, better screen, waterproof certification, drop proof certification, OLED screen instead of the PH-1's disappointing LCD panel, bigger screen, has an SD card slot, better camera, and above all else, well supported. Unfortunately, my old phone was broken and I needed to replace it immediately and as cheaply as possible. $15 per month made the PH-1 the best option available for me. Even the LG G6 with it's inferior specs, processor, etc. would have cost me more -- $20 per month.
We'll see how I'm feeling about my PH-1 in a week. Right now there's a lot of good and a lot of bad, so it's hard to say. At least by shear dumb luck I got the PH-1 at a budget phone price.
I had the same issue and took it to a Sprint store today. After a lot of trial and error, turning off Google voice did the trick for me. Even though they already switched me to a new phone.
I wanted to keep it but Pixel 2 coming out in October and camera subpar.

I am on sprint and I have had zero issues, in fact I have a better signal with this phone because it utilizes the LTE + network. This is very interesting to me.

Invalid sim scam?

I purchased this phone through Craigslist. The guy stated it was unlocked so I thought great! Let's seal the deal. I popped my T-Mobile SIM in and like magic, it worked like a charm. Next day, invalid sim. I called Sprint, they said the phone is unlocked but no help. I called TMobile, they said it's not us it's Sprint. Popped the sim into my unlocked Pixel XL, boom! It worked. Popped it back into my Essential Phone and invalid sim, network locked. What gives? I call the guy back, straight to voicemail. I text him, it's been 10hrs nothing. Is it something going on with these phones that scammers are burning people with them?

Next day, invalid sim. I called Sprint, they said the phone is unlocked but no help. I called TMobile, they said it's not us it's Sprint. Popped the sim into my unlocked Pixel XL, boom! It worked. Popped it back into my Essential Phone and invalid sim, network locked. What gives? I call the guy back, straight to voicemail. I text him, it's been 10hrs nothing. Is it something going on with these phones that scammers are burning people with them?

I was on the same situation last week but mines network locked while I flashing firmwares to get T-Mobile wifi calling working the Sprint Essential Variant. I tried everything including flashing the Nougat builds and then Oreo builds and all kinds of combinations but no luck. I was lucky because the guy I bought it from was honest seller and called Sprint and Essential himself negate Sprint kept saying it was unlocked. He ended up giving me his old SIM card since he had called his service. I inserted into my phone and let it sit for an hour while connected to WiFi. I restarted my phone I was able to go to mobile settings and changed to Global and it's been unlocked since last Thursday.
If you go to the Sprint website and dig around you'll see the only way for Sprint to unlock an Android phone is to have a Sprint Sim in the phone. Maybe you can get a Sprint Sim card just so it can connect to the servers and get it unlocked.
Good Luck

Thank you for your testimony. Wow! This is madness for an unlocked device. It almost seems as though Sprint is in on the scam themselves??? But thank you so much for your help friend. I'll check back in to let you guys know what happens??? I'm contacting Essential as we speak via support email... we'll see?

It had his old number programmed into it but it didn't hey any service. Sprint's setup is different than T-Mobile because of the CDMA technology they use. It's not like T-Mobile that you just pop the Sim into another phone.
I honestly don't know if you can use any Sprint SIM card but you will definitely need one from my experience. The good news for you seems to be that it is most likely paid off if Sprint says it's unlocked.

After the first time it Sim locked the phone I was able to unlock it ONCE by fishing different builds but I was trying to get TMobile WiFi calling working so I kept flashing thinking it was going to stay unlocked after but sure enough it locked again and I after that I could not get it unlocked. I tried flashing so many firmwares and then updates through OTA download through the app and side loading. See if maybe you can order one online from Sprint or maybe on eBay.

I originally got it from eBay and just emailed the guy, hopefully he knows what to do. I was told by my carrier (Optus Australia) that they could do some shifty stuff with the OS to trick it to enable it then once an update happens it changes it back to locked. However don't think that is the case due to it being a wide spread case according to the people on twitter.

From my experience the issue is with Sprint, Essential can't really do anything about it because of the Variant

Great point. But I was thinking more along the side of Essential Phone, contacting Sprint, letting them know that it's a wide spread issue.

Sprint knows by know, if you read around the web it's been going on for months. Seems the just expect you to have a Sprint Sim laying around to unlock it lol. After my unmoving experience I don't think I would ever get Sprint service lol

Gotcha!
Do you have a feeling that Sprint will fix this issue since it's widespread? I'm starting to think that Sprint was in on it. Or am I just an upset customer??? It's not happening to Sprint customers on there network, just people who are not on their network but have a Sprint variant. I have a strong feeling that Sprint locked us out of a unlocked phone intentionally. You?

I agree. This is crazy, months??? Still no software fix??? I'm starting to believe it's a network fix only. They need to officially make an open statement regarding the situation, on how to resolve the matter. I think it's time to beat down Sprints Twitter page for a resolution.
