REQUEST: Marshmallow ROM for Pixel XL - Google Pixel XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Sorry, didnt know what thread to post in.
Can someone compile a Marshmallow ROM for Pixel XL? Just so that we can run our beloved Xposed module, please? I can even donate few $ if that's the motivation.

Highly doubt it would be possible unless someone puts in tremendous hours of work into this since the pixel came with nougat.
I just don't see some Dev putting hours into this just for xposed and for an obsolete version of Android.

Lol not gonna happen.

Grrr that's a bummer. I'm still rocking my m8 due to no Xposed on Nougat. Only damn reason I have not activated my Pixel.

What do you need Xposed for so badly..?

Xposed isn't really needed for much anymore. I mean most stuff u can do on xposed you can do with root, or root app, or an app, or flashable zip. And MM not gonna happen like he said, wishful thinking, lol. We need an Android O ROM though ? once TWRP works on O.

Generally speaking, such requests belong in the Q&A forum.
That stated, I can't imagine having the nerve to ask a question that starts with the words "can someone compile a ROM..."
In a word, this request should have never been made.
As others have mentioned, it's not likely someone can build a ROM based on an operating system that has never been available with this device.

Hope you know there's a HUGE # of people not upgrading/flashing ROMs beyond Marshmallow due to Xposed not being compatible.

Wait, on the Pixel and Pixel XL devices? We had Marshmallow?

Yeah, there are SEVERAL xposed modules I miss very much.
They gave me options that you cannot find in any Nougat custom ROM.
I'd LOVE to see MarshMallow on Pixel but that's not going to happen.
NotifyClean and EnhancedToast are two that I miss the most, just off the top of my head.
But I had like 15-20 modules on MarshMallow and some are no longer needed but some I really miss.
I'd pay a lot of money just for NotifyClean alone. Nougat has a similar option built-in but it sucks badly in comparison to what NotifyClean can do.
I also liked the one for PlayStore that made PlayStore open directly to "my apps" instead of the main page.
App Settings, Expand Volume, Native Clipboard, CrappaLinks, APM+.
Then there were MANY modules that did clone of what custom ROM's offer. But by simply re-enabling the saved modules after clean flashing a new ROM, you saved a TON of time by not having to set each item individually in ROM settings. Like App Ops Exposed, GravityBox, Lock Screen Mods, etc.
I'd pay big money for App Settings also. Though it hasn't worked properly since Lollipop.

You can create a shortcut to the my apps page on your home screen by long pressing the play store, if that helps.

Never needed Xposed, most Roms had what I wanted. To reach their own, some people love it and others don't care for it.

I mean, I love xposed, and totally see where you're coming from, but calling others idiots isn't necessary..
I understand, its frustrating when you say "I like this feature, does anyone know how to port it?" But others respond with "I never needed it, therefore you shouldn't need it."
I liked xposed because I could get all my favorite lineage/cm features on any ROM I waa on.. I haven't seen a screen off, long press volume button seek tracks app to work on nougat. Macrodroid has gotten close, but not completely there.
Believe me, I kept my oneplus 3 on marshmallow for months after nougat rolled out because xposed. And here you are nearly a year out. But I think what might be a good option as well is to make a list of modules you use, post them, and see what apps others recommend.

Figure if the need was bad enough one would figure out how to port it themselves ?

AOSP Rom

Was able to get a ROM built and running based on LRX21V straight from source. Just trying to get a feel on how many people would want to run AOSP. There are some bugs present such as video recording causing the camera to stop working. I think there are binaries missing that Google didn't include in the binaries that are available. Same problem happened on the Nexus 5. Didn't test it much as I just purely wanted to see if it booted.
Also there is a lack of gapps available so I won't be rushing to get anything out. Let me know what y'all think and I'll try to tackle this to get some other options out for us.
Here is the test build for those that want to have a look. This is just a test build so bugs are to be expected. Video recording does not work. Haven't tested it completely as I need a fully working device this weekend. This is for those that have free time to just nit pick and find all bugs in this. Please report back after you are done and let me know what else you may have found that is broken or not working right.
Stock Google kernel (so if you flashed the kernel image to remove encryption your phone WILL be encrypted again)
Built off 5.0.0_r7 from AOSP
Flash ROM, flash gapps and flash SU that is linked below. This will allow root access on the stock kernel.
You can also optionally flash the custom boot image after flashing the ROM, gapps and SU by rebooting to bootloader and fastboot flash boot the custom encryption kernel. That is optional. Be sure to go back in to recovery after flashing the kernel to reflash the SU to make sure it was not overwritten.

That is pretty offensive. It is a new device and isn't in the developers hand so releasing work without testing their work leads to quality problems.
I don't see you doing any development work and developers don't owe anyone anything as they do all this work as a hobby pretty much.

I know the reasons behind it, which was the point of the "no offense." I wasn't whining. I was trying to help motivate and encourage OP. He, as well as others, are working on making things happen and I'm excited for it and waiting eagerly for the kernel source to drop.
You took what I said the wrong way, so step off of your soap box, zephiK.
Edit: That reminds me. If any devs need testers, PM me. I'll be happy to help the community out.

No. Minor bug fixes for the particular device it was made for but that's it. I did notice on the N5 that there was a significant "miscellaneous" battery drain on r7. Might roll back to r3 if its present since r3 is the one for us (its also the same build for the N5).

Miscellaneous bug again? I wonder if they broke the same thing they already fixed, or if this is something else that is just falling into miscellaneous as well.
Thanks for the work on this!

Eh? I think,
You are wrong....
There is pretty much EVERYTHING DECENT about Chainfire's ability and dedication to continue rooting each successive version of Android. Pixel was first to ship with 7.1, and there ARE differences between the new systemless root and 6.0 or 6.0.1 root methodology.
Why does your message just sound like a CALITALIZED rambling of a spoilsport? I dunno. It does to me, anyway.
There is like nothing special about ANYthing new, got us there aha!
I like the advent of new tech and new methods, even if novelty is old by now.

No there isn't.
The only explanation for keeping the source code closed, is because he is HIDING something in it. I wouldn't touch that garbage if my life depended on it.
WHY DO YOU THINK I MAINTAIN MY OWN SOURCE?
And like I already said, there was *absolutely nothing* special about the pixel.
He's just trying to drum up an "awww cool" factor that is undeserved.

I literally have a diagnosis of schizophrenia, and you might not. However, I can instantly recognise paranoid conspiracy theory.
Literally, the "only" reason -ever- for *shudder* an Android dev protecting some measure of private and intellectual property is..... He is evil and hiding his violence from all of us!?
Cool story bro.
Maintain your own source if you want, but people are allowed to keep some property to themselves.

Sprint V20 bootloader status?

The title pretty much says it all. I'm on Sprint and I like this phone but I'm not going to get it if the bootloader is locked and/or it can't be rooted. Having ad blocking and Xposed on my phone are basic requirements for me to get one.
Would any kind soul please let me know?
I don't know, but if not anything with the bootloader would love a way to at least get a systemless root, does this sound like something that could even be possible?
It is locked as of now. Root may or may not come.
Get yourself Adguard and live happy. What do you want Xposed for?
I like root just to debloat.
I also like Titanium Backup as well
Yes. Adblocking and titbackup. Xposed would be nice though this phone needs less xposed modules for sure. I think. Lg got a lot of things right ootb.

Is this a serious question? Have you used xposed be before? The YouTube ad blocking alone is worth it. Not to mention being able to tweak literally everything on the phone and basically have a custom ROM like experience without having to flash a new ROM over the stock one. Lets say i want to change the height of my navbar and make it pink instead of black. I can do all that with xposed. If you're asking why xposed is desirable you may as well be asking why customization is needed.

I've never had stability issues with any xposed modules. My previous device was the LG G4 and I used xposed to tweak the crap out of it and it was awesome. There is a reason why xposed is so popular go look at the xposed threads. Just cause you don't feel its necessary doesn't mean it has no value to other users. This is XDA developer's for godsakes i dont think encouraging people to be content with a stock device should even be allowed on this site. But thats my humble opinion.

Can I get Google Assistant without root?

I tried out this guide for Marshmallow to get Google Assistant on my phone, but it looks like something's changed signature-wise in Nougat, because I get this error when I try to install the modded APK:
Code:
adb install -r Google/dist/Google.apk
3531 KB/s (48690418 bytes in 13.462s)
Failure [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES: Failed to collect certificates from /data/app/vmdl1063868361.tmp/base.apk: META-INF/CERT.SF indicates /data/app/vmdl1063868361.tmp/base.apk is signed using APK Signature Scheme v2, but no such signature was found. Signature stripped?]
I can't find a way to get around that, and I'm hoping maybe there's another method to get Google Assistant on my phone without root.
I have the H918, so I can root, but I'm going to be busy with school for the next few weeks, so I don't really want to wipe and risk bricking because I have to rush the process.

It's better than Siri in everything I've compared, and it's fun to use too. I enjoy it a lot on my Note 4. Is this signature verification a new thing in Nougat, since the steps seem to work fine under Marshmallow?

No, I installed the Assistant Enabler Xposed module on my Note 4. I know that they're different, and I know what the differences are.
And please stop saying it's garbage. I've used it. It works well. It does what it says it does. It has fun games, and I enjoy using it. You may not think it's worth installing, but that doesn't mean it's low quality.

And please stop saying it's garbage. I've used it. It works well. It does what it says it does. It has fun games, and I enjoy using it. You may not think it's worth installing, but that doesn't mean it's low quality.

Since you are on Android N, no need for extra steps.
As I've told you, you can't get it with out root......root is your only option.

The thread I was following indicates otherwise. I was looking for some troubleshooting possibilities or an explanation, not a deprecation of what I enjoy using.
Well, let me put it this way.... no.
The only way I know to get it is to edit the build.prop to spoof a Pixel. That, of course, requires root. It'll also break things that are LG dependent.
In the XDA newsfeed, there have been reports that some phones are not behaving well with the mod. Those same feeds report most of what you can achieve with Assistant can be done with Google Now and Allo. I can understand someone's desire to go for those things that can't be done with either Now or Allo.
For me, it doesn't yet pass the cost/benefit test. I'm keeping an eye on things, hoping a dev can incorporate Assistant within the stock ROM without losing the LG stuff. Maybe then I'll step up to the plate.

Well I know it's possible to do. hsbadr made Google Assistant the default on CM14.1 for the Note 4, without build.prop edits. It's also possible with the Xposed module (so once we get Xposed on Nougat, it'll be simple). It's also apparently possible with the guide I've been trying to follow, but it looks like that needs root too on Nougat for some reason.

Can't do that. The hack says to copy the META-INF folder from the old APK into the new one. Resigning just gives me the different signature error.

Thanks for taking the time
(I've reached my thanks limit apparently...)
Yes it's possible to add google assistant without root to LG V20.
https://beebom.com/how-enable-google-assistant-any-android-no-root/
or

By now I read that google assistant is only available in USA and Germany.

[Viper4Android] [OxygenOS] Request for including Viper4Android in OxygenOS

Hi,
I have just found that there is a thread in the Oneplus forums that requests to include Viper4Android in OxygenOS.
I am not allowed to root my Oneplus 3T because I also use it for work, but Viper is the one thing i miss most.
Please like the post, maybe the Oneplus developers react:

Not going to happen. Viper is no longer in development. It comes from an age before SELinux. It cannot be implemented in a way that is suitable for "release software".
No longer in development? Last build of ViperFX is of Feb 12, 2017...

Looks like I'm a bit behind on the news. Thing is, if I hit the check for updates button, it still links to 2.4.0.1. That's why I missed it.
But still. It's not something any manufacturer can integrate into software that is shipped to customers.
One Plus would have to pay the devs would they not? It won't happen but it is a really great mod, I wouldn't run my phone without it.
Of course they can implement it. I don't get this SELinux bull, you don't need to break SELinux to get viper working. However viper has huge problems with Oxygen's audio stack in OOs 4. I would love Viper to be official, but I would settle with the audio stack being improved so that viper runs with it properly.
(Yes I know Viper 'works' but not with all the apps I use, and they work fine in CM14 or LineageOS. )

ast00, reading again now, I think that perhaps my clarification sounded a bit harsh.
Not meant to be that way, sorry.

You are way behind.. Plenty of people using it with selinux set to enforcing.. You just need the right policy and when its system software baked into the ROM there is no reason we cant implement it with even fewer tricks.
You know the OS itself runs as root, more or less. We are talking about making it part of the OS
