Prevent update to Nougat on A3 2016 - Galaxy A3, A5, A7, A8, A9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I have upgraded my A310F to Nougat but decided I don't like some things (mostly related to Dream UX or whatever the thing is called) and some minor flaws like inability to use keyboard other than Samsung one (other ones crash the Samsung Keyboard process when trying to use emoticons), also the battery management is quite poor (there is no longer a list of apps I want to be killed once I just stop using them).
Anyway - I got back to Marshmallow by simply flashing firmware via Odin (all works fine again).
But the question is... how can I stay on Marshmallow forever?
Currently I've disabled the autoupdate over wi-fi but AFAIK the update popups will keep appearing once only Nougat will be officially available in XEO region.
How can I make this permanent? Any ideas?
If you have any - be it without or with rooting - please let me know. I don't want to loose the ability to use Samsung Store.

Yup. It is there I thought that this may be related with not working Samsung Pay with rooted phone but fortunately it's not.

[Q] Galaxy TAB firmware official upgrade to JJ7

Hi All,
I bought my galaxy tab yesterday from Currys UK. I have been a very happy user of HTC Desire and now i thought to move to bigger screen.
Today, when I connected my phone using Samsung Kies, it informed that there are new firmware (*JJ7) available for tab. My tab currently has firmware *JJ3. I am currently installing the upgrade using Kies but its kindda slow.
Few questions --
1. Firmware upgrade - I think it is same as we say ROM upgrade in HTC phones. Right?
2. In Desire, I used to get OTA (Over the air) upgrade. Is this not the case in Samsung? Will I always get updates via PC? if yes then what a shame?
3. Not sure what benefit I am gonna get after firmware upgrade but its good to be on latest official version.
Thanks in advance.

With the unofficial JM6 ROM (see the other discussion thread in this forum), there is a "Software Update" service that runs in the background, presumably to check for the latest available version of vendor-provided features...or maybe it checks for the latest Samsung stuff...not sure.
Let us know how it goes with the official firmware update.

Hi,
After firmware upgrade, i dont see any major difference, in fact i just used my new galaxy tab for few hrs so probably i would not be able to make a judgement what's the difference.
But its working very well. If you have any specific question then i can try to answer that.
One thing, I am using Google talk on my tab, messages are not in proper sorted order as per date. It's been sorted as per person which means I am getting all the other side messages on the top.
Could you please help me to figure out how can i rectify it or Do I need to upgrade my Gtalk App. Unfortunatly I am not getting this app in Mrket place.
Regards,
JM
Can you do me a favour, open your browser and go to the UK's PeakFM web site and see if you can view the page, click on any of the boxed links and navigate correctly through the web site.
I am finding certain web sites such as this and others are not being displayed correctly, so if the update has cured that I would jump at upgrading.
Thanks.

Have you seen the size of the firmware packages for the tab? Many people won't be too keen on downloading around 300MB over their cell connection.
Having to plug it into the PC once every few months is not that much of a chore.

No-one has yet to find an official changelog for any of the versions of the firmware, Samsung is unlikely to release this information to the public.

No, all my apps are intact after applying the update.
I haven't seen the email app crash since the update (it used to crash reliably every 2nd time) and I haven't had the camera preview messed up either. Of course either of these might just be luck, but here's hoping.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I just updated the firmware.
All the bugs that i know of is still there, the browser lag, the video player thumbnail generation lag, etc.
Don't know what has been fixed here, unless i can see a changelog and test it.
My phone version has been updated from J16 to JJ1.
PDA JJ1 to JK3.
EDIT: The Gallery Loading is faster...ie. it generates the thumbnails almost instantly now. I have around 5-8 folders with over 1 GB of images inside.

That may be the case but Kies is an absolute nightmare.
I also have an SGS and when I applied an upgrade for Froyo on a stock SGS with nothing altered Kies 'bricked' the phone.
Luckily I could still do the 3-Button Recovery so managed to wipe the phone clean and use Odin with the upgrade ROM from samfirmware.com
As such I am no fan of Kies and not looking forward to connecting my Tab to it.
Question to everyone else who has done the upgrade ~ has anyone experienced any difficulties with Kies and the Tab?
I just upgraded also and can't really spot any changes so far. The upgrade did preserve everything, although I had to re-root. Oddly Opera Mobile was crashing a lot also (it hardly ever did prior to the upgrade), but an uninstall and reinstall seems to have fixed that.

It worked ok for me, although what are Mac users supposed to do? Luckily I had a PC in the house I could use.
Hi,
Upgrade was quite slow. It took 30-45 mins.
My all apps and home screen customisations are intact. That's really good.

How come I don't get the update in kies? It says my device is already running the latest firmware. I'm on an unlocked and unbranded euro version of the tab.
edit: is it because I rooted it?

It's not because you've rooted anyway because I've done that and I got the update. Perhaps you really are already on the latest? My Tab is an unlocked one bought in the UK on the day of release and was running JJ3 originally.
It would appear the update is for JJ users as in JJ3 to JJ7.

On HTC phones, you are notified that an update is available for download, and then advised that it may be better to switch to WiFi before downloading.

Try telling that to someone who is running OS/X or Linux!
Yes, I know you can use a VM, but:
a) That *is* a chore!
b) You need to have a Windows license, which some people might not legally have.
EDIT: I see there is a Kies Mini now for OS/X users!
OTA is definitely the way to go IMHO.

Couldn't agree more with you Dave.... Kies is an absolute nightmare. Besides the insane method Samsung use, you connect and take a chance it does not brick your phone.

I'm using OSX at the moment and am fine with having to boot into my win7 partition or use my WinXP VM if need be.
In order to download a 300MB file OTA, i'd either need to change my data plan to one that costs me an extra $30/month, or pay 10c/mb for data beyond my current cap. Not everywhere has good cellular data plans, although Europe, North America and Asis, would encompass >95% of their target market, so I can't imagine they'd care too much.
Obviously they _should_ support OSX users as it's a reasonable sized market, although probably most OSX users would be more likely to get an iPad as they're already suckling at the teat of Jobs. It's simply a USB/COM gateway, basically just an adb redirect, so other than the UI it's not like it's complicated for them to implement as most of the framework already exists in the SDK.

S4 Keeps downloading Software Updates when Auto Updating is Unchecked

You know....I am soooooo fed up with this!!! and I need help.
I have auto-updating turned OFF and software scheduling updates OFF, and then now, I just connected to my Wifi connection and my phone started to download a 350MB software update bundle even though every AUTO Checking of Software Updates are TURNED OFF. I dont know why its still downloading updates when I have all of these disabled to automatically check for updates.
Please see print screens.
I DO NOT want ANY software updates to be downloaded especially I dont even know what updates they are.
Please help me on this. I want this to be disabled.
Just sick of this!!!!! I mean really....
Now, I do not really know what this 300MB update bundle was, but it wasnt the Android 4.3 update as I just checked.
I have no clue whatsoever on what updates were installed.
How can I check what updates were installed?
Thanks

My phone is not ROOTED.
Can you post screenshots of this please on where I can find this in order to disable this?
I want to disable auto-updates because Im afraid it might "break" things.
Thanks, I would appreciate some print screens.
Will Android version 4.3 be downloaded automatically as well?
Now that, I will not mind if 4.3 would be installed automatically since I heard that should fix the "lag" issue on the screen on most S4 phones.

Since your phone is factory stock an update wont break things.
Samsung updates are not to be feared.
And the updates. Dont waste space... as the software gets refines you get more.
I now have 9.1 gigs when I use to have 8giga when I just got the phone
Samsung is optimizing the software and it is getting slimmer.
Updates do not waste space.
So relax... it sounds like this is your first Samsung flagship.

You will get 4.3 automatically if you leave the software update feature on.
Samsung update services are decent.
For example the Samsung Galaxy S2 was updated to 4.1.2 via OTA even tho it is considered an old phone from the Gingerbread 2.3.4 - 2.3.6 era. (FEB 2011)

Yes.
But my advice... leave auto update on.
If you tap the check for updates button you may see an update but it wont download because the update server space is full.
Your fear is understood but unnecessary.
Its best to let it download by itself over wifi.
When it is done it will ask you if you want to update... it will not reboot your phone without you knowing.... nor will it install new software without you knowing.

Sorry, but one more last question. I tend to turn off my WiFi on my S4 most of the time even when I am at home.
Now I enabled the Auto Updates as you recommended. But as most of the time, I have the WiFi OFF and only enable it when I need to.
Will that be OK for the updates?

3G strains the battery much more than wifi bro, leave wifi on if you can for better battery life. OTA`s can be downloaded on 3G but wifi is cheaper and faster. 4.3 isn`t out yet, will take another 2-3 months for the official one, leaks may come earlier.

As the user above says.
Leave wifi on for better battery life when you are at home.
If you turn off wifi and do not want the phone connected to the internet make sure you turn off mobile data as well.
With your internet service off: The update will just take longer. I am not sure the updater service downloads the data in pieces as a torrent client or download manager would do.
So its best to leave it on... go to sleep and wake up to see the notification that the update has been downloaded and ready for installation.

If you have problems after update, you can make factory reset, which will erase all personal data from the phone and fix the errors, keeping you with the lastest firmware. Now you can go to application manager/all apps and find SoftwareUpdate. Disable it and I think, you wont be able to update before enabling it again. No root needed to do this.

No you can't roll back as you would on a PC from the phone itself.
What you will have to do is download the version of firmware you want and like and use a PC based software called ODIN to re-flash the phone.
If you do this you can keep your old settings (it wont wipe your personal data) and "roll back" to a version you preffer.
However updates seldom if ever break things in my region. I do not know about other regions.
For example: I keep my S4 STOCK STOCK STOCK so I have never had the need to roll back any update.. and nothing so far has broken in the 4 updates I have received over wifi.
Other people may have other experiences, possibly bad ones with apps crashing or the phone being slow.
So what they normally do in such a negative case is a Factory reset.
A factory reset will have the new firmware but it removes all your settings and downloaded apps and presents the phone as if it just came from the factory.
Your settings and apps will then be reloaded once you log into Google and / or your Samsung account.
So relatively speaking it is not a major hassle.

New Netflix App provides offline Mode but not on the Elephone p9000

hi
I own the p9000 maybe for 2 Months. It runs on latest Stock 20160810 Rom, Bootloader locked, no modifications, newer rooted.
3 days ago Netflix released a new version of their Android App, which provide a download function for several Movies and Series.
On my "old" nexus 5 it works flawless. But on the Elephone p9000, same App version, has no Download option and no Category "downloaded Movies". I posted this also on the elephone Forum and it seems that several other p9000 users are also involved. Sadly no solution nor answer from customer service yet.
Someone mentioned the reason, that the device is not fully certified by google, so it reports like a rooted device to netflix.
Anyone using Netflix on this device and have the download option inside the netflix app ? Maybe it works with some custom Rom.
Thanks for the answers.

what you mean with keys ? Do you think this could be a issue by some failed certificate ?
I know that many people have problems even to run Netflix or Amazon prime Video when their Phone is rooted. But this p9000 is absolute virgin from this point.
Anyway i doubt someone would buy another phone only to make an app properly work. I was just curious what's the reason for this weird behaviour. Also, if it is really a certificate problem, so apps with higher security levels see some breach here, it would be very interesting though.
Every phone is signed. Their are test keys which do not allow certain functionality like android pay or banking apps. Release keys are signed over the rom so these functions can be used

Thank you for your kind answer. So then it seems that the Rom was not properly signed by elephone . Will try some banking apps if they work.
Netflix Works flawlessly on my p9000, including the Download functionality.
I'm on latest Eragon Rom.

It's also working for me (I've tested Downloads) on the Android 7.0 Beta.
Ok ..this seems good news to me. I wait for the final Android 7 and see if it work then. When not i go for some custom Rom.
Update : It seems that the Download for the Netflix app works on some devices with newest stock Rom and for some unknown reason it simply dont work on other devices.
So it's obviously another reason what makes this happen.
Working flawlessly here too, with the latest OTA update (20160810). Systemless Rooted + Xposed

It seems so random to me. Some guy from the elephone forum proved that netflix download works on his device with screenshots. Same device, same stock rom. Maybe it has something to do with the geolocation. No clue.

It seems the problem is that they don't properly signed the Stock Rom, or it becomes corrupt while OTA update. I had now several Apps reporting me that my device is rooted and therefore because of security reason the application will not work properly.
WTF elephone ?
Don't know if it would help when i flash the last stock Rom manually again. Maybe something gone wrong while the OTA update process. Also what makes me more angry that their support staff is simply not existent in their forum. It's obvious how this work. You buy a phone, get no support and that's it. Anyway, if the Android 7 Update renders into a scam bubble i'll return the phone back to amazon.

January 2, 2017 Software Update

This morning, my Note received a rather large software update that installed without many problems. Most likely certain security updates, but I was surprised to receive it as we are not really "accustomed" to any attention from Samsung for this tablet. Any further comments from anybody else?
I got the same.

Sorry for the misspelling. I meant to say "without any problems" not "without many problems". In fact, the whole update process was smooth and fast. Everything works fine. I understand, however, that everyone's setup is different and my experience should not be the absolute rule.
Nothing here on my device. Although it might be because I'm in Sweden.
Did anyone see any changes? I dont see/feel anything other than the version number change even the security patch level date remained the same. Is there a changelog somewhere

I don't see any difference after the update, either. I wonder what it was supposed to have updated?

There's a whole new Lollipop firmware on the San mobile firmware site.
Yes...problems
My tablet updated and now the OS boots super slow and then does a soft shutdown and reboots a second time. It takes more than 60 secs to get to the home screen. Anyone know how to uninstall this update?

I've seen this post for a few days but not had time to respond till now.
I've got an SM-P605v. Haven't seen, or been able to download the update you've mentioned. This may be because I don't use Verizon as my connectivity partner, or it may be that my particular tablet's OS doesn't need the security updates that yours did.

I also have a SM-P605V but have Verizon as my carrier. I got the notification to update today. I don't see anything on VZW site about it nor under the specific SKU on SamMobile (still has 10/15/15 as the last official update). When looking at the SM-P605 model, there are some in the list (even today's date), though they are for non-USA countries.
Even so, it looks like they are still all Android 5.1.1, so it's likely just some minor tweaks. To my understanding, you would need to pop in an activated Verizon SIM to get the update for your specific tablet, as Verizon is the one that issues it. You can also wait until it's posted on SamMobile and manually do it. https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-P605V/

I think I found the official from Verizon: https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/samsung-galaxy-note-10-2014-update/
Software Version: LMY47X.P605VVRSDPL1
The current software update gives you the most up to date Androidâ„¢ security patch on your device.

(I called VZW and she confirmed that it was an Android Security patch, no MM, darnit!)

You should be able to flash this now that Sammobile posted it... https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-P605V/
I got this a couple of days ago - managed to odin flash after I put the wrong file and got the boot loader triangle a day before.
Its extremely stable and the tablets working like a dream - the only issue is no root.
Edit: I noticed a great improvement in battery management and it will charge to 100% from 30% in 4 hours before I flashed the 5.1.1 rom it took nearly 8 hours with a new(second hand) USB Flex connector and nearly 20 hours with the old usb flex connector to go from 30% to 100%.
I really like this tablet - it reminds me so much of my SM-N910F note 4.
You can root the latest firmware and also install twrp. I have a 600.

Probably just a security update
Please excuse my silly question but I have P600 with 5.1.1 and never rooted. Do I need to install twrp before I update or it doesn't matter? Updates always make me uneasy with locking bootloader or needing new root methods.
If you just want to update then flash with Odin and the appropriate file. Try looking at sammobile.com for the appropriate rom file.
If you want root then you will need to install a custom recovery using CF auto or Twerp - the latter will NOT work on the SM-605v version as the bootloader is locked and will result in the yellow triangle and stating that the tablet has a strange recovery and that you should see a verizon technician. By installing the recovery you can then update the system or even try out new roms created by the people of this wonderful community.
Rooting will potentially stop business application with built in security from working - i.e. HSBC application, Virgin Media app and Sky Movies apps will not work on rooted phones to name a few.
I updated and rooted and everything is working ok. I had trouble with 64gb Sandisk microsd with "sd card unexpectedly removed" error. Then it mount itself back. Sometime it shows empty and asks to format and sometime it works. Also the lockscreen flicker and that usually when the card error happened. I suspect they are related and it happens only when waking up the device. The card works fine with all my other devices including my note 4 on stock 5.1.1. I'm not sure what caused it because I just used this sd card with the note 10.1 and then updated and rooted all in the same day.
Anyway, I removed the Sandisk and now I'm using 32gb Samsung and it only happened once for maybe 12 hours (could have been 100 times with Sandisk). Also, I don't notice the lockscreen flickering anymore. I will see if this problem comes back or it just that Sandisk doesn't play well my note. I have seen many people here reported similar problem with other Samsung devices for too many reasons. I don't believe file format is the issue but I'm using exFAT.

Can't use app S health after flash Offical ROM Android 7.0

App Alet popup
---------------------------------------------------
"Your device has been compromised
Because of a new security policy
intruduced in version 5.0 knox is not
available on compromised devices."
---------------------------------------------------
I have same problem, cannot use my Gear S3 now, funny is that S health works at non Samsung rooted devices :/
Some say to uninstall s health and install a previous version.. to open it and set it up and then to update the app
Check your knox. Its probably 0x1.
Knox is tripped ofc after root, i tried to unistall app but i cannot get it unistall, tried app from play store and link2sd to unistall it but it still there so if i try to flash older version i get error saying that file is corrupted.
Flashing official ROM using Odin does not trigger Knox (at least it shouldn't). I have the same problem after flashing official 7.0 ROM and my Knox Counter is NOT triggered (it is 0x0000).
I cannot uninstall or downgrade S Health since it's a "default app".
Any workarounds?

If knox is triggered then:
- make a root
- remove S health with Titanium Backup
- install older version S health before version 5
- launch app, sync account and then update to new version of S health
Working, tested one hour ago, i had this problem after flashing and rooting 7.0 stock rom.

Hi
I've just come across this problem upgrading to Nougat today. I'd like to try your suggestion but how do I find an older version of S Health like you suggest?
TIA
Just found 4.8.1. I'll give it a go.

I had to try three versions. Two kept saying they were corrupt when trying to install. I managed to install the third but, when I try to sync, I keep being told the server is temporarily offline. I suppose that may be true but I doubt it.
And now whenever I try to open the app, it freezes and the only way to open it is to clear the data in the app settings.
So I think it's back to Marshmallow for me for now. I need S Health for my Gear S3.

I tried going back to Marshmallow but after I boot the Galaxy S7 it asks for a code. I have no idea what to do next because no code seems to work.

Have you checked if it's tripped or are you just guessing? Are you on your phones official firmware or did you flash different firmware in Odin?
I think it's not compatible with N.
I flashed MM after trying RR, and then it worked just fine. Strange though, Samsung should be able to get their apps working.
