S4 Keeps downloading Software Updates when Auto Updating is Unchecked - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

You know....I am soooooo fed up with this!!! and I need help.
I have auto-updating turned OFF and software scheduling updates OFF, and then now, I just connected to my Wifi connection and my phone started to download a 350MB software update bundle even though every AUTO Checking of Software Updates are TURNED OFF. I dont know why its still downloading updates when I have all of these disabled to automatically check for updates.
Please see print screens.
I DO NOT want ANY software updates to be downloaded especially I dont even know what updates they are.
Please help me on this. I want this to be disabled.
Just sick of this!!!!! I mean really....
Now, I do not really know what this 300MB update bundle was, but it wasnt the Android 4.3 update as I just checked.
I have no clue whatsoever on what updates were installed.
How can I check what updates were installed?
Thanks

If you have root you can disable Samsung updates by deleting FWUpgrade.apk and FotaClient.apk (and the odex files) with root explorer.

My phone is not ROOTED.
Can you post screenshots of this please on where I can find this in order to disable this?
I want to disable auto-updates because Im afraid it might "break" things.
Thanks, I would appreciate some print screens.
Will Android version 4.3 be downloaded automatically as well?
Now that, I will not mind if 4.3 would be installed automatically since I heard that should fix the "lag" issue on the screen on most S4 phones.

Ok, if I root my phone which I do not want to do then is there anyway to disable these updates?
I just want to conserve the phone storage space which is now approx. 8.36gb and therefore I do not want these updates.

Since your phone is factory stock an update wont break things.
Samsung updates are not to be feared.
And the updates. Dont waste space... as the software gets refines you get more.
I now have 9.1 gigs when I use to have 8giga when I just got the phone
Samsung is optimizing the software and it is getting slimmer.
Updates do not waste space.
So relax... it sounds like this is your first Samsung flagship.

You will get 4.3 automatically if you leave the software update feature on.
Samsung update services are decent.
For example the Samsung Galaxy S2 was updated to 4.1.2 via OTA even tho it is considered an old phone from the Gingerbread 2.3.4 - 2.3.6 era. (FEB 2011)

Yes.
But my advice... leave auto update on.
If you tap the check for updates button you may see an update but it wont download because the update server space is full.
Your fear is understood but unnecessary.
Its best to let it download by itself over wifi.
When it is done it will ask you if you want to update... it will not reboot your phone without you knowing.... nor will it install new software without you knowing.

Sorry, but one more last question. I tend to turn off my WiFi on my S4 most of the time even when I am at home.
Now I enabled the Auto Updates as you recommended. But as most of the time, I have the WiFi OFF and only enable it when I need to.
Will that be OK for the updates?
So far, I did not get the Android 4.3 update.

3G strains the battery much more than wifi bro, leave wifi on if you can for better battery life. OTA`s can be downloaded on 3G but wifi is cheaper and faster. 4.3 isn`t out yet, will take another 2-3 months for the official one, leaks may come earlier.

As the user above says.
Leave wifi on for better battery life when you are at home.
If you turn off wifi and do not want the phone connected to the internet make sure you turn off mobile data as well.
With your internet service off: The update will just take longer. I am not sure the updater service downloads the data in pieces as a torrent client or download manager would do.
So its best to leave it on... go to sleep and wake up to see the notification that the update has been downloaded and ready for installation.

If you have problems after update, you can make factory reset, which will erase all personal data from the phone and fix the errors, keeping you with the lastest firmware. Now you can go to application manager/all apps and find SoftwareUpdate. Disable it and I think, you wont be able to update before enabling it again. No root needed to do this.

No you can't roll back as you would on a PC from the phone itself.
What you will have to do is download the version of firmware you want and like and use a PC based software called ODIN to re-flash the phone.
If you do this you can keep your old settings (it wont wipe your personal data) and "roll back" to a version you preffer.
However updates seldom if ever break things in my region. I do not know about other regions.
For example: I keep my S4 STOCK STOCK STOCK so I have never had the need to roll back any update.. and nothing so far has broken in the 4 updates I have received over wifi.
Other people may have other experiences, possibly bad ones with apps crashing or the phone being slow.
So what they normally do in such a negative case is a Factory reset.
A factory reset will have the new firmware but it removes all your settings and downloaded apps and presents the phone as if it just came from the factory.
Your settings and apps will then be reloaded once you log into Google and / or your Samsung account.
So relatively speaking it is not a major hassle.

[Q] Galaxy TAB firmware official upgrade to JJ7

Hi All,
I bought my galaxy tab yesterday from Currys UK. I have been a very happy user of HTC Desire and now i thought to move to bigger screen.
Today, when I connected my phone using Samsung Kies, it informed that there are new firmware (*JJ7) available for tab. My tab currently has firmware *JJ3. I am currently installing the upgrade using Kies but its kindda slow.
Few questions --
1. Firmware upgrade - I think it is same as we say ROM upgrade in HTC phones. Right?
2. In Desire, I used to get OTA (Over the air) upgrade. Is this not the case in Samsung? Will I always get updates via PC? if yes then what a shame?
3. Not sure what benefit I am gonna get after firmware upgrade but its good to be on latest official version.
Thanks in advance.

With the unofficial JM6 ROM (see the other discussion thread in this forum), there is a "Software Update" service that runs in the background, presumably to check for the latest available version of vendor-provided features...or maybe it checks for the latest Samsung stuff...not sure.
Let us know how it goes with the official firmware update.

Hi,
After firmware upgrade, i dont see any major difference, in fact i just used my new galaxy tab for few hrs so probably i would not be able to make a judgement what's the difference.
But its working very well. If you have any specific question then i can try to answer that.
One thing, I am using Google talk on my tab, messages are not in proper sorted order as per date. It's been sorted as per person which means I am getting all the other side messages on the top.
Could you please help me to figure out how can i rectify it or Do I need to upgrade my Gtalk App. Unfortunatly I am not getting this app in Mrket place.
Regards,
JM
Can you do me a favour, open your browser and go to the UK's PeakFM web site and see if you can view the page, click on any of the boxed links and navigate correctly through the web site.
I am finding certain web sites such as this and others are not being displayed correctly, so if the update has cured that I would jump at upgrading.
Thanks.

Have you seen the size of the firmware packages for the tab? Many people won't be too keen on downloading around 300MB over their cell connection.
Having to plug it into the PC once every few months is not that much of a chore.

No-one has yet to find an official changelog for any of the versions of the firmware, Samsung is unlikely to release this information to the public.

No, all my apps are intact after applying the update.
I haven't seen the email app crash since the update (it used to crash reliably every 2nd time) and I haven't had the camera preview messed up either. Of course either of these might just be luck, but here's hoping.

I just updated the firmware.
All the bugs that i know of is still there, the browser lag, the video player thumbnail generation lag, etc.
Don't know what has been fixed here, unless i can see a changelog and test it.
My phone version has been updated from J16 to JJ1.
PDA JJ1 to JK3.
EDIT: The Gallery Loading is faster...ie. it generates the thumbnails almost instantly now. I have around 5-8 folders with over 1 GB of images inside.

That may be the case but Kies is an absolute nightmare.
I also have an SGS and when I applied an upgrade for Froyo on a stock SGS with nothing altered Kies 'bricked' the phone.
Luckily I could still do the 3-Button Recovery so managed to wipe the phone clean and use Odin with the upgrade ROM from samfirmware.com
As such I am no fan of Kies and not looking forward to connecting my Tab to it.
Question to everyone else who has done the upgrade ~ has anyone experienced any difficulties with Kies and the Tab?
I just upgraded also and can't really spot any changes so far. The upgrade did preserve everything, although I had to re-root. Oddly Opera Mobile was crashing a lot also (it hardly ever did prior to the upgrade), but an uninstall and reinstall seems to have fixed that.

It worked ok for me, although what are Mac users supposed to do? Luckily I had a PC in the house I could use.
Hi,
Upgrade was quite slow. It took 30-45 mins.
My all apps and home screen customisations are intact. That's really good.

How come I don't get the update in kies? It says my device is already running the latest firmware. I'm on an unlocked and unbranded euro version of the tab.
edit: is it because I rooted it?

It's not because you've rooted anyway because I've done that and I got the update. Perhaps you really are already on the latest? My Tab is an unlocked one bought in the UK on the day of release and was running JJ3 originally.
It would appear the update is for JJ users as in JJ3 to JJ7.

Try telling that to someone who is running OS/X or Linux!
Yes, I know you can use a VM, but:
a) That *is* a chore!
b) You need to have a Windows license, which some people might not legally have.
EDIT: I see there is a Kies Mini now for OS/X users!
OTA is definitely the way to go IMHO.

Couldn't agree more with you Dave.... Kies is an absolute nightmare. Besides the insane method Samsung use, you connect and take a chance it does not brick your phone.

I'm using OSX at the moment and am fine with having to boot into my win7 partition or use my WinXP VM if need be.
In order to download a 300MB file OTA, i'd either need to change my data plan to one that costs me an extra $30/month, or pay 10c/mb for data beyond my current cap. Not everywhere has good cellular data plans, although Europe, North America and Asis, would encompass >95% of their target market, so I can't imagine they'd care too much.
Obviously they _should_ support OSX users as it's a reasonable sized market, although probably most OSX users would be more likely to get an iPad as they're already suckling at the teat of Jobs. It's simply a USB/COM gateway, basically just an adb redirect, so other than the UI it's not like it's complicated for them to implement as most of the framework already exists in the SDK.

OTA Update for GT-P3100 IMM76D.P3100DDBLF2 changes

Did anyone else got these OTA update? I got it today (I am in India, have a GT-P3100). It just mentions "stability improvements" in the prompt before the OTA is applied. Things do seem a bit faster now.
One welcome improvement was this option to change the screenshot QuickLaunch softkey to other things like Applications/Search/Camera or get rid of it altogether. Anyone else found any extra tweaks yet?

Other than that everything seems fine.
did it have english language?

Yes it is English.
IR Blaster / Peel does not work though as the P3100 doesn't have IR Blaster.

I flashed it on my P3113. Peel complains it is incompatible (As the model number changed to P3100 which doesnt have Infrared)
Additionally there is a phone icon on the homescreen which P3113 cant really use (lack of hardware) although you can disable that.
Not perfect, I'd wait for a proper 4.0.4 for P3113.

For me using Kies wasn't necessary. I was using the device while connected to Wifi and it downloaded the update via OTA on its own and asked me to apply it. You may want to check "Update" settings to make sure OTA is enabled. FWIW, I also had a Samsung account setup (for Samsung Dive), not sure if that affects things.
just a quick question!
i got my tab2 P3100 (4.0.3) monday morning and saw the update notif, but dint update to 4.0.4, cos i wanted to check how good i was getting battery wise etc.
Will update probably this Saturday.
My question is will this 4.0.4 work on P1000? i do know that the arch is different, but since the update installs Peel w/o the India P3100 having IR, is there a possibility that this may work?
My device is rooted, ive downloaded the new fw through Ota, but when the system reboots it comes to cwm, how can i apply the update?

How to disable Firmware Updates on GTi9505 S4?

How can I DISABLE automatic installation of firmware updates to onto my phone?
I DO NOT want these firmware updates to be downloaded or installed automatically without my knowledge.

So how can I disable these from automatically downloading and installing?
Also, not only the firmware updates, but "other" updates as well.

PTMCWeb is completely right. Hitting "Software Update" takes you to a Boolean"Update Now" popup with no other option than choosing Yes, No or Wifi. No option to defeat future updates is offered.
Going into developer mode doesn't seem to add any pertinent options either (correct me if I'm wrong).
Clearly, Samsung doesn't want you to be able to disable updates unless or until you root, which I'm doing this weekend on the basis of this thread.

Official Verizon update???

Hey there, everybody. I'm currently running a manually odexed version of the stock N900VVRUEOF1 firmware, with bootloader unlock, TWRP 2.8.7.0, and am both rooted and running Xposed framework...
Out of nowhere, I see a long-forgotten icon, in my notification tray. It's saying there's a software update available! I wanted to make sure this wasn't some fluke (or to make sure I wasn't dreaming), so I checked out Verizon's update list.
https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/software-updates/
Lo, and behold! There's an actual, honest-to-goddess update! (Listed as: LRX21V.N900VVRSEPL1)
However, there is little to no information on what it is or does, apart from the ever-vague "latest security updates"...
Fearing a potential planned obsolescence (like the Note 7) or it wrecking my custom root/recovery/bootloader status, I haven't installed it.
I could try to unpack it all and go digging through it, but that takes way more time or energy than I can currently devote to this sort of thing...
Does anybody know what is involved with this update or have any other information as-to what it includes?

Would love to know as well. However I am not rooted nor do I want to.
I was honestly shocked when I saw the notification.
I'm tempted to go through with the update but since I like how I have my phone setup at the moment, im really hesitant to install it.
Would love to hear from anyone that has!
Update...
New update is just a security update for Lollipop.... http://www.galaxynote3update.com/verizon-galaxy-note-3-updates-lrx21v-n900vvrsepl1/

Thanks for the update, GoNavyMike.
That's about all I could find as well. :-/
In an effort to get a better idea of what has changed, would you have happened to have installed this? If so, would you say that there's any noticeable difference in performance or features, apart from the obvious potential app updates?
I'm all for the performance fixes and whatnot, but I really don't wanna lose root. Does this patch over current root methods, bump the Lollipop build up to 5.1 (sdk21), or anything like that? These are the kinds of things that a number of folks (myself included) are curious about. If you have updated, any insight you might provide would be very valuable!
Thanks for your time!

Was shocked to see myself.
I'm having trouble to disable the notification.
Tried using disable services from the playstore and unticking system update from Google framework also tried the Disable system updates app for rooted devices. Also the tick mark to hide notifications is grayed out on System Update in applications.
Im running Stock VRUEOF1 with TWRP and rooted.
Any suggestions?
My GF and I both have the Note 3. Mine is rooted and her's is stock, so I told her to go ahead and install it. Yeah, it's just a security update. I decided to update mine and it fails with the 402 error. Likely because I'm rooted. I need to look into deleting the update and blocking OTA.
BEWARE
Hey so I've got the 900v and it was rooted stock deodexed with a few rom toolbox tweaks. After the updated I was soft bricked - had to revert back to factory with Odin - no fun.

I used titanium backup pro and I froze the software update and it removed the annoying update pop up and stoped the updating from happening.

Thanks for the heads-up. This is the sort of thing I was worried about. Firstly, whether being rooted would mess with the update (perhaps it's just a partial update...?) and secondly, that I'd be able to keep root.
Assuming that your GF is okay with you borrowing her phone (which IS a rather large assumption, for nearly anybody), would you mind trying to see if current rooting methods still work for the new update?

I'm sorry to hear about having to do the full backup and restore... According to what yourself and xm41907 have posted, it apparently checks for full stock. Not sure how you managed to get as far as you did, but at least we know that this update doesn't play nice with rooted phones.
Performance/security improvements are great and all, but there are plenty of Xposed mods and manual tweaks to take care of that-- as long as there's still root.
If there's anybody who doesn't care whether they have root or not, I'd love to hear if current rooting methods still work after the new update, or if this update patches over or current for exploits.
Disclaimer: If you update, you do so at your own risk. However, we'd love to hear more about the details and any root-related insight.
Thanks, everybody!

I can ask if she is ok attempting root. I've been out of it since the Verizon Note 3 first got root capability. This brought me back to it seeing the bootloader can be unlocked and roms put on. I'm jazzed to try AryaMod !
I'm worried about what specifically it means by "Security Updates". I'm still on the OLD unlimited data plan. Because of this, I have to use FoxFi to tether as Verizon doesn't allow it. I'm worried this update may block it.
Can anyone confirm FoxFi still bypasses Verizon's tethering check post update? My Note 3 is totally stock, not rooted, and updated to the last patch(before this one).
Thanks!

For those wondering...
I went ahead and did the update. Foxfi is still working post update
Thanks everyone for your continued feedback about this update. I am still clinging on to my Note 3. This is most certainly my last subsidized phone on VZW with my UDP.
In any event, I was just as shocked as you guys to see the system update notification. I went straight to Tibackup and froze the "System updates" app, which has tamed the notifications.
I did the update 2 days ago on my non-rooted note 3.
Everything is pretty much the same I dont notice any difference really.
Only thing is it seems my battery life has become worse.

Update for everybody with the Note 3 I don't know if it's coincidence or not after updating but when I'm in the YouTube app and have my charger connected to my phone it will say dock is connected really quick and then disappear it will probably do this two or three times a day just wanted to throw this out there and let people know that there might be a bug in the update I will check my USB port and see if it's clean and not damaged

Hey Speed_Phreak - thanks for your post, I think I'm on the right track but still having some trouble. After freezing "Security Policy Updates.apk," "Samsung Updates.apk," and performing a restart, the OTA "security update" notification persists. How did you access "system update.apk?"

Yes only Chinese firmwares.
With all these updates there was never once with any fix for the notification issues. I got a feeling this is not in the software team's agenda. With my usage, I got notifications quite regularly with the native email app and the Google news update notifications quite regularly if check on these app every now and then. However if I happened to leave for a while, then it will kind of go into deep sleep and completely shut off. This can be a plus or minus, cause it can save the battery quite considerably, depend on how one looks at it. Probably with my usage pattern I can live with it.
Installed it last night. Thanks for the changelog, I couldn't read it, because it was in Chinese. I haven't noticed any difference either. Most Chinese users will only be interested in QQ and WeChat notifications, which seem to work fine
I starting to believe something is wrong with my mate 9 (MAH-AL00) last OTA I recevied was B167 and I've been checking on a regular basis in system update and no firmware updates appear (missed 173 and now 175)

Did you checked with wifi and 4g?
Did you tried hicare with China region?
Did you tried the 3 dots in system update to download latest full package?
If you tried all this maybe a factory reset can get you the update, but don't blame me if you didn't find the update.

yes I tried all the above even using a VPN connected to China network didn't get me any update. I also tried connecting the phone to a computer with HiSuite but could find an option to manually upload the update.

So maybe try factory reset, I know it's weird but i usually get updates after a factory reset.
Maybe because my apn settings will be the default one,not sure.
You can also update manually with firmware finder application from playstore.

man factory reset is something I have done in a while and not sure if it will delete my data or settings and since I'm not rooted installing and configuring everything again will be painful,
I downloaded just now and I can see the update in the list but it appears with 0.0 MB in both options listed.

Sorry no idea, but as far as i know Chinese firmwares are easy and fast to get, not sure why ur not so lucky, and yes factory reset will wipe ur data and settings.
If you decide to do a factory reset, try reset settings first maybe you got luck there.
i went to the settings for firmware updater and enable updates via system update, went and try to check for updates and now I got the notification for the 175 update, I installed it and I can see if a little bit faster with some apps, problem now none of my google apps works is asking me to install core GMS again
