Rooting Verizon Droid Turbo 2 - Droid Turbo 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone have any tips? I've tried Kingoroot with no luck.

Have to unlock bootloader first.
Which is not possible at this time with this Verizon phone.

Or if he needs Verizon, get a phone where XDA forum shows the Verizon bootloader can be unlocked. For instance Droid Turbo XT1254 -- as long as it's not on the very latest firmware version (and Sunshine team is even working on that).
Or other Sunshine cracked phones.
Or Moto Nexus 6.
Point is, with Verizon phones you really have to research first before you buy -- if rooting is important to you.

this only factor its keeping me from over hype myself to this phone, if someone roots and unlocks bootloader this beast. will be the android phone of the year on size specs and battery.
That's where I am. N6 is too big. I have a Moto X and Nexus 7 (both 2013), and the N6 is just too big, based on the PhoneArena size comparisons. I need root, so the N6 has a slight advantage right now.
I love the idea of a Nexus phone, but the Turbo has most of the features I would want, like Moto Apps (same/similar to Moto X), wireless charging, amazing battery, and it's not so big. I know the N6 will be easy to root/unlock, but I don't if that is enough to outweigh the size.
Price is still an unknown on the Turbo, too. I have to think it's less than the $649 of the N6.
Semi-related.. Another thing I was thinking about the other day.. the Turbo has capacative buttons, with no menu button. My Moto X has on-screen buttons and does show the three dots from time to time that works as a menu button on the right side of the nav bar. How would the Turbo handle such a situation? Would the developer be forced to make a menu button somewhere in their app?
Don't forget about the note 4

I'm confident we'll get root. Almost every phone out there has gotten root, most without much delay.
Time will tell though
This might be the first phone I might not care about root. I don't use hotspots. Its 90% pure Android with actually useful extra features. With 3 gigs of ram and that battery, do I really care about bloat apps? I think maybe unicon and xposed might be my only reasons. And there not just haves. Of course I want root. Its my phone. But it won't be a deal breaker for me.
I've been spoiled by Xposed, and do use hotspot for my N7. I also use some Tasker profiles that need root, so it's kind of a must for me. I agree with @rajuabju, at the rate things have been going, it won't be more than a few months. Who knows, maybe this latest Moto exploit will work. Or maybe the middleman will have codes for the Turbo. We'll know in a few weeks, I guess.

Lol, exactly why I won't get a phone without root. Xposed and the hacked hotspot app for VZW. Also why I would like it "permanently" unlocked (like the RAZR HD was - a blown fuse that can't be fixed or "patched" once destroyed), easier to flash SuperSU.zip onto the phone after every update without worrying about "is it safe to take the update or not? Will I lose root?"

My Verizon Moto Maker Moto X is unlocked. The Chinese middleman was unlocking Moto X and another Moto phone.. Maxx or Ultra, maybe?
And SunShine seemed to work on most Droids.
Unless you were being sarcastic, in which case, you got me.

No, wasn't trying to be sarcastic at all. I've been rolling with my S3 for the past 2.5 years and haven't been paying very much attention outside of that. I was somewhat aware that it was possible to pay some...one...thing...idk to get some of these Motorola devices unlocked--what a strange situation that is.

I would say there are probably equal odds that SunShine works for Turbo, or that Moto patched it. But given the propensity to root/unlock devices, it will happen rather quickly.
Sunshine won't work for the Droid Turbo, yet.
It only works for 4.4.3 and below, the Turbo will undoubtedly be released on 4.4.4 or 5.0, but that doesn't mean it won't eventually work. It's the only hope though.
I've been out of the CDMA loop for years and years and years now. Don't these phones use SIMs now? Is it just a matter of software unlocking GSM frequencies or is it still completely different hardware?
I was a phablet user for 2 years but went back to a N5 and am actually liking the smaller form factor, and would get this over the N6. A stock 5.0 port making this GPe would sure be sweet.
This phone looks geeat, but I'm on TMo.

The SIM is for LTE only, I believe. The rest is done over CDMA. I believe the N6 has a US edition and a world edition, so the US edition will work with all major carriers on all bands and won't really be "different". The Droid line is Verizon exclusive, so it will be locked to CDMA and Verizon's LTE bands.

you could pay a middle man to send you an unlock code but you needed to pass along your IMEI number to get it...now, sunshine seems to unlock just about all of the Moto phones from 2013 afaik...
i HIGHLY doubt sunshine will work out of the box on a Turbo..but heres to hoping...

I used the MiddleMan for my Moto G while I was on a prepaid Verizon plan. $45 well spent.
I was VERY lucky to have gotten my Verizon HTC One M7's bootloader unlocked the first day it came out Verizon blundered and didn't turn off that capability through HTC right away.

If you're going to comment on a dev forum, at least understand the terminology before you use it... otherwise it makes you seem ignorant. "UNLOCKED" and "UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER" are two very different things that have ZERO to do with one another.
All LTE CDMA phones for the past 2 years that use a SIM are "unlocked", as this refers to the carrier lock that is placed on the device when it is sold in bulk to network providers (which is why you have three network settings in your phones setting menu - LTE, GSM, and Global). Don't use terminology you don't understand, as you're adding to the ignorance too many seem to have about what unlocking is and what unlocking a bootloader is. It makes it only that much harder for other individuals to get the correct information, and is the reason why a VZW rep tried to tell me I don't need a developer edition to unlock my phone, because all LTE devices are unlocked when I tried to explain I was looking for a developer edition so I could unlock the bootloader.
Very few Verizon phones have the capability to unlock the phone's bootloader, which allows for rooting without an exploit and the ability to flash custom ROMs (firmware), such as Cyanagenmod. Those of you believing root will appear on any new Motorola phones are not well versed in Motorola phones sold by Verizon. Dan Rosenberg, who is the person anyone with a Motorola device on Verizon has to to thank for the last half decade of being able to root your Motorola VZW phones, has repeatedly posted on numerous threads for over a year to not expect for your Motorola devices to be rooted and if you want root, either buy a Nexus or buy a Developer Edition (if VZW is going to release any more editions after the S5 is not known and information about Developer Editions for the Note 4 Droid Turbo have been repeatedly ignored by VZW's Public Affairs office). This is due to the fact VZW has wizened up and made finding an exploit on anything past 4.4.4 nigh impossible. Exploits that allow root access are not easy to find (taking several months for most VZW Moto root exploits) and as soon as one is found, within a matter of weeks, if not days, VZW will push an automatic update, forcing your phone to update to patch the exploit. This is why when you root your phone you're told to disable OTA updates at the apk level by freezing the update apk or removing it all together after making a backup of it.
Many Motorola users got a surprise in late Spring when a Moto employee "accidentally" included the exploited code that allowed you to blow the fuse and unlock the bootloader of devices running 4.4.2. That was a once in a billion opportunity that will probably never happen again. Every time an exploit has been found that allowed root access or the ability to unlock the bootloader (which was only recently cracked in the past year, possibly two... to put that in perspective, it took over half a decade for Dan Rosenberg to find the exploit that allowed the internal fuse to be blown, unlocking the bootloader). Exploits are not easy things to find, especially in Motorola devices running on VZW's network.
To all of those that like to post root bounties... BUY A DEVELOPER EDITION. You'll pay $300 for a device and then offer $300+ for a root bounty... which is the cost of developer edition device... considering VZW offers Edge, you no longer have to pay full retail in one go for a DE. From this point forward, VZW customers need to comprehend the fact that rooting will continue to be increasingly difficult to perform, most especially on Moto phones running on VZW's network. If you want root access, buy the S5 developer edition or wait until the first week of december to see if a developer edition for the Note 4 will be released (if a Note 4 DE is going to be released, it will occur within the 4 - 6 weeks following it's RTM on 10/23 [Thursday]).

Joining the Turbo 2 wagon

Just ordered it on eBay. As far as I know, it's unlocked and does not have the Verizon logo. Will I be able to root it?
I've read great reviews on this phone, and hence ordered it. But, the overall picture on this forum looks grim.
What do I need to know? What are the first things I should do after getting it?

Hopefully you've ordered Moto X Force. First charge it, put your sim, sd card (if you have), turn it on, install apps and enjoy. If you you wish, you can unlock bootloader first. Because procedure will do factory reset your phone but I have Force for about half of the year and this is my very first Android phone, including nexus, running stock, locked bl and no rooted.
I think we are in the same boat.
I bought the Droid Turbo 2 on Ebay from a Chinese seller. He said it's factory unlocked and It isn't the Verizon version.
Looking at the details it looks like Droid Turbo 2(xt1585 and bands are not as X Force).
I don't know if they are selling X Force as Droid Turbo 2 or they get the Verizon phore direct from factory without the logo but this put me think on what about updates.
What is in about? Maybe they got them directly from factory.

Verizon Moto G4 Play not Unlockable?

Hey guys , trying to unlock my Moto G4 Play but the the Moto site says my device is not eligible . However the OEM Unlock is turned on in settings? Any help would be appreciated, really want root.
Anyone? Please can't stand the bloat
Be patient. The XT1607 isn't even on the chart yet about what devices are eligible for unlock. It's the same model as the one sold unlocked by moto and Amazon, so I find it unlikely that it won't eventually get the unlock, but since it's only been out for 4 days now you need to chillax.
I plan to make a rom for cdma as soon as the unlock is possible, but it could be a few weeks/month.

That's okay, it's still being sold direct from moto like the 1607 is as an unlocked cdma phone, so my statement *should* still apply. I think we're going to see a bootloader unlock very soon. Moto is just dragging their feet a little, I mean the stock restore images aren't even available yet for fixing a bricked phone.
As long as we're all patient, I really don't see this being one of the phones that doesn't get an unlock. It's in their best interest at this price point as an unlocked bootloader means some inexperienced users will brick them and since their bootloader is unlocked the warranty is void, which means they'll likely buy another to replace it because, let's face it: what other options are there for cdma, unlocked, under $200USD?

I just got the phone today - the standard, no-ads edition (xt1607). I was able to unlock the bootloader, even though the G4 Play is not listed on the motorola website. Chances are the Verizon version is locked down.
After doing a little research, I found out that the XT1607 will work on all major American carriers including Verizon. The XT1609 looks to be a Verizon prepaid version of this phone.

Correct, but Verizon typically doesn't allow bootloader unlocking. A Verizon branded phone probably won't be unlockable.

Kind of the wrong place for this question as this thread is about bootloader unlocking (for rooting), not carrier unlocking. I'm interested in any possible answer to this question too (seems like a half way decent budget smartphone to use on AT&T or Cricket) but from what I can gather, Verizon had a recent policy change which prohibits carrier unlocking until one year of ownership has passed. Maybe there is a workaround other than ebay (doesn't seem to be unlock codes for this phone there). Maybe you can try starting a new thread titled something like "Carrier Unlocking For Verizon Moto G4 Play" to get some more traction on this question. Good luck.
Edit: Didn't notice that you posted a couple of posts down saying that you got rid of it. Guess you could care less about unlocking it.

I would imagine that all the G4 Plays are the same (hardware wise) and the GSM would be a software thing. I'm just making an assumption based on previous models, but it wouldn't matter much anyway if Moto/Verizon didn't allow anyway around it. Maybe someday someone will unlock one of these and we can test it out. Just a little curious.

The Indian Moto Turbo XT1225 and all the Moto Maxx XT1225s have Marshmallow. The Droid Turbo XT1254 (what that support guide is written for) does not. When you say "Turbo," you need to specify which otherwise it's rather vague as to which Quark is being spoken about.
Also this very item was discussed in the "Marshmallow" thread.

Plenty of proof (Wi-fi certification, etc) Motorola delivered the Marshmallow update MONTHS ago to Verizon -- at the same time they rolled out Marshmallow for other Quarks.
Get excited if you see such instructions on a Verizon customer page. At this point in time, Verizon is the hold up, not Motorola.

Yeah, Motorola used the exact same device as the XT1254 Droid Turbo (same FCC ID, same bands, and everything) for the Moto XT1250 U.S. Moto Maxx. Those two Quarks are identical in every way, except the Verizon model has locked down bootloader (which took a year for Sunshine to unlock) -- while all the other Quarks have easily unlocked bootloader for free via Motorola.
And then Motorola used the "Turbo" name for two Quarks -- the XT1254 Droid Turbo and the XT1225 Moto Turbo.
The only thing "exclusive" about the Droid Turbo XT1254 is the "Droid" name and the Verizon-mandated locked down bootloader.
Motorola re-uses a lot of names. It's also the reason people can't come in here and say I have a "Maxx". WHICH Quark Maxx do you have? The U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250 or the Moto Maxx XT1225? In one case, someone was referring to another phone series altogether, the 2013 VERIZON Droid Maxx -- which is not related to the Quark series in any way.
Does me having an erection mean I'm getting laid soon?
No. Manufacturers just put stuff on support pages that are copy and pasted from other phones they make because the process is the same.
I wouldn't get your hopes up. I know I'm disappointed every time I need to use my hand too

Moto x 2013 - at&t 1058 android 5.1
Update, I have tested this exploit and it has been able to give me the codes for almost all unlock data strings I've tested it on.
I have tested it on 19 devices:
8 XT1060 ( Verizon )
5 XT1056 ( Sprint )
5 XT1058 ( AT&T )
1 XT1053 ( Unlocked)
The only device it did not work on was the XT1053, or the unlocked version. I've been able to get codes for the other 18 devices. I have tested the codes out on 6 of them, and they all worked. I haven't been able to test the codes on all of the devices because most were from online and I didn't have access to the devices.

I'm currently working on a way to automate it. It will be released either through apk, or a website.
Update: I am currently coding the website for this. Right now it will only work with the Moto X 1st gen, I might try to expand to other devices later.

can you please gimme unlock code
I have many phones like that just this one for testing
Wow, this is pretty cool news if it turns out to be useful. I just saw a Moto X in a pawn shop the other day, one of my favorite phones of all time and now because of this thread I'm thinking about going to get it.
Might just have to do that if I can talk 'em down on the price to make it worthwhile, if I do get - and it works fine and isn't already unlocked (fat chance of that but you just never know) - I'd love to see if it'll work with this methodology the OP has come up with.
Guess I'll take a walk over and see what's up with that Moto X, think it's an AT&T version but I can't remember precisely.
Good luck with things, regardless...
EDIT:
Ok, so I went and grabbed that Moto X, it's an AT&T XT1058 as we all know, black model, nary a mark on it so whoever owned it previously sure did a great job taking care of it thankfully. I'll post the unlock info just in case the OP cares to give it a go but if not I can wait till he/she might have that automated method available.
The unlock info for this XT1058 is:
3A35120695322625#543031313330474A534700585431303538000000#8824CC4590B14CA4D15FAD760B586CEB67232790#635986040C0001000000000000000000
and of course I checked it with Motorola and they obviously won't allow it to unlock since it's the AT&T variant. But anyway, there it is, so fingers crossed I suppose. I missed my original Moto X, still have some accessories for it including a Griffin desktop stand I got for my original one from Motorola for free so I might have to dig that out of a closet and make use of it again. Small phone nowadays compared to modern monster 5" and larger beasts but I do still love the Moto X and I'm glad I got another one.
(for whatever reason, when I look at that code above it has 2 spaces in it as displayed by my browser which if Firefox ESR but it doesn't have any spaces when I copied/pasted it, and I see the same thing for other codes posted above - just wanted to say that for some reason, 132 digits long)

I believe I have found an exploit to get the bootloader unlock codes for older Motorola devices. The first person to post their fastboot oem get_unlock_data here for the Moto X, I will test it and give you an unlock code to test completely free. Thank you!

Asisentr11,
Thank You for doing this! My wife and I bought 2 Moto X 2013 (non-dev) phones under Verizon, when we had their Unlimited Data Plan. Right after we bought the phones, Verizon changed their plans and Unlimited Data users were promptly charged extra $$$ for it! So we go to Motorola to get unlock codes (so we can get better battery life, etc.) and they say that they cannot give me the unlock code! If your method works, we will definitely apply it.
Best Wishes with this!

Is it my ATT&T android 4.2.2 xt1058
The OP posted something about the Moto Z basically a week ago and hasn't made a peep since so, either he/she will come back and provide an update at some point or this is just another pipe dream in the wind, so to speak.
