Monthly Security Updates - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

Hi guys,
It's been a few weeks since I purchased the Galaxy S8 and I totally love the phone.
I saw in the Samsung Blog that they will release Monthly Security Updates OTA.
I was unable to find any Security Updates in May 2017 other than the Update that was to fix the tint issue.
Even checking Settings / Software Update gives that The Latest Updates have already been installed.
Can someone please guide me here?

This is both Samsung being slow and then the carrier adding more lag. Even those of us with unbranded phones got May update just under 2 weeks ago.

May security update just started rolling out a week ago.

My G950FXXU1AQDG Singapore S8 is still on late April updates with April security patch. I am still waiting for May or June updates.

Same baseband on my eu s8, still waiting for that may update that other carriers got already in the country sight <_< .

In Sri Lanka the carriers do not sell the phones on priority. It's all separate sellers. So, no idea here then.

UK, unbranded phone and still on AQDG firmware with April's security updates. It's already June and I'm waiting for May's security. What a joke.

Exactly, I also have unbranded and waiting for the updates.

A couple of weeks ago there was an OTA firmware update. If I remember correctly it said that it fixes bluetooth issues amongst other things. My Android security patch level shows 1 May.

I have the US unlocked S8 (no carrier branding/bloat) and it's on April too. We haven't received the May update yet.

This is my security patch level. unbranded sri lankan version. still on April security patch. not good samsung

Strange that it is not rolled out to all unbranded at the same time.

This isn't a google phone so you really shouldn't expect monthly updates, no one else does them anyway, maybe blackberry... maybe.

Yes, I'm aware this is not a Google phone but the whole point of monthly "security" updates is a bit moot when Samsung (or any other vendor) is unable to release them... monthly. We're not talking about extra software features or new Android releases. These are security patches supposed to keep your device safe and up to date with the latest threats.
Finally, "no one else does them anyway" is a ridiculous excuse. They all should and especially with devices at this price range. We pay premium, we should at least have proper support. It's about time companies got their head around this unacceptable situation with late updates and support.

Yes they should but they don't, now what? This is a google issue too, hopefully this new treble project will speed this up, until then it's wishful thinking.

Samsung does indeed release new builds with security updates every month and sometimes even more often, just not for all the regions. So you'll see one region getting a new build and the next month another region gets a newer builds but not the previous region. The only way to be sure you're up-to-date is manually downloading and flashing the most recent build with Odin.

I've noticed that to, I've got the S8 Unlocked and haven't seen one update yet.

Sorry for bringing up this thread, but I'd like to know more about Samsung's update policy.
For how long are monthly security updates guaranteed? And what about system updates? Thanks

I'm not aware of any guarantees but history shows 2 major Android version upgrades and 4-5 years security updates (not necessarily monthly though)

I am still on april security patch and its december now.

what is going on with the lack of updates on unlocked us996??

this is ridiculous. I buy the unlocked version because they always get updated first, but here we are sitting on the October security patch and the original software that came with the phone while all of the carriers have been getting updates the past two months.
seriously lg, wtf is going on?

I don't think AT&T has received any updates at all? I mean since I'm rooted and such, I don't receive update notifications - but I don't think we have gotten anything either.
My T-mobile version didn't get any update since October. Don't know where you have your information from.
According to this, 10f was officially released on the 4th. You can use LGBridge or try software update in settings to get it.

Getting security updates (and Oreo) in Australia

Thought I should share this for anyone having the same problem as me.
My TA-1033 was no longer receiving OTA monthly security updates, last patch was January 2018.
Apparently, the February update was the full 8.0 upgrade which hasn't been released into the Australian market but was in India.
So I did a factory reset with no SIM inserted, download a VPN connected to an Indian server, did the check updates and, lo and behold, there was the full Oreo upgrade waiting to download. Since then, my phone did all the security patches right up until May. For the 8.1 upgrade, I wasn't connected to the VPN so it had a verification error, I just connected to download again and it worked fine.
I assume Nokia don't want to do an OTA update in Australia because of band differences or something but haven't noticed any problems so far (disclaimer:that's not to say I won't but am prepared to take the risk knowing I'm getting all my security updates).
Maybe the Australian market has been too weak so they're not developing here but it's pretty ****ty because I always had Nexus devices before they were discontinued and bought a Nokia on the basis that it was vanilla Android with full, up to date security patches. It's poor form for Nokia to leave us hanging like that.
Anyway, hope it helps someone else searching for a fix to the same problem.

Its because Australia has only 10 millions of total population and among those not everyone bought Nokia, but Indian market have 1.25 billion people and among those arround, not sure but, 2-3 million peoples bought Nokia 6, thats why it lauched India first, please don't take this as country insult, m just telling thay marketing works with only people not with country
China have the largest population in the world, thats why every Nokia phone launches first there then everywhere.
I think h get my point

When is the March security update coming to unlocked Snapdragon variants?

Again Europe is getting the update way before the US market. Any word when to expect the update here?
No word yet and Samsung hasn't put out a schedule! hopefully soon...
At this point they should wait for April patch... But what matters most to me is resolving network bugs with Sprint + T-Mobile. Still, isn't it odd that even the U1 S10s don't have the March patch?
I don't care about the security update, I want the fixes, like the deep sleep bug, etc. So tired of feeling like a red-headed stepchild.

I had an U1 S9+ in the US and it always came last for any updates. Use to be the first to get them but not anymore. It took about 3 weeks to get the Pie update from Oreo after everyone else got it.

ATT has some network issues also.. I'm having to restart my s10+ one to two times a day just to get signal back. Unlocked S10+
Damn, even though these phones are made in vietnam yet they still havent released any update for vietnam region (exynos)
My Unlocked UK gets updated pretty much on day 0, but you Americans have to suffer waiting for your lazy providers to bloat your firmware first, not only that, that's also another reason of why you can't unlock your bootloader, it really sucks.
Samsung's update schedule is totally ignored by most providers worldwide, some S9 units are getting Pie just now, so there's no way to really know when anything is coming to anyone.

Mine is unlocked, not a provider phone. Yet still ignored by Samsung. I love Samsung phones, I always get unlocked versions, but this is absolutely ridiculous. One thing about iPhones that makes me jealous.
April....day 5....no March update. How is it acceptable to have a flagship phone, where Samsung committed to monthly updates, and to be a month late right out of the gate?
My phone runs amazing. I'm not sweating it.
I am still waiting also.
It should arrive for U1 once all US carriers update their U models. I think Verizon & ATT haven't updated yet, will check later.

Finally! Thanks for heads up
I got a prompt for a biometrics update (Canada unlocked version) yet when I try to install it, it fails. Had to remove Secure Folder it seems, but then the notification disappeared completely. No more notification and biometrics still the same older version. I love how good Samsung is at rolling out updates. I will probably never get this now.
No March update either, a md it's mid April now.
Hopefully the biometrics update(s) will come soon for the snapdragon unlocked us version
Just received the unlocked March update... Yippee ???????

Unlocked AT&T V35 not updating to pie even when placing the $10 AT&T Sim

My V35 doesn't want to update to pie with the $10 AT&T prepaid sim card, i tried forwarding the date 5 days and it checks for updates but it says that its "up to date" i've done this method more than 10 times and no success. The sim card did work at first updating the phone from the december update to the april update (security) in June.
Android Version: 8.0.0
Android security patch level: April 1, 2019
I know I'm right with you. I'm in straight talk and have gotten all the updates to the march security patch v350AWM12j. But have not gotten any ota for Android 9.0? I recently ordered an ATT sim to give that a shot but I guess we will see. Just wish LG would release a downloadable version!

AT&T won't let them.
Same with Sprint LG phones.
Ugh! Well them both working together to because this is truly unacceptable! I don't know what the difference is between a security update and a software update as I received security updates just fine.
Got to
A update this morning and brought to awm 20 c.
This was at my house which has no AT&t signal so I'm just on Wi-Fi
Guess it's just a waiting game then? Slow rollout!!!

anyone else stuck on May?

Is anyone else stuck on the May 1st patch that has the U1 (Unlocked by Sammy)?

It's intolerable, I'm about to throw it in the trash.

Everyone that has u1 model is still on may security patch unless they manually flashed one of the U firmwares.
Agreed it's totally asinine, I thought in the past unlocked phones were the first to get updates and carriers push them out late. Now it appears to be the other way around which makes no sense.

That would be because you don't have the U1 model which is what op was asking about. Or if you do, then you must have updated via Odin

Samsung does update their unlocked phones last after all of the carriers have signed off on updates. I've been reading complaints about this since Samsung started selling unlocked phones in North America but it's completely deliberate if frustrating.
In the past it was Unlocked then carrier. My understanding was that the carrier models took longer because of all of the bloat they pushed the update had to not interfere with that and it not interfere with the update. Now it has become a pay to play type field where the carriers seem to be saying hey who's more valuable, our 50,000 units or the independents and their 1,200 units?
Anyway on an up note, for those who don't have the update... I know how can that be an up note, but for those who don't have it, there were several articles about glitches with the update. After the phones last reboot it was asking users to input a password, even if none had been set. If one was set it didn't work anymore and I believe the only resolution was a factory reset. No big deal if that was something you planed on doing anyway or if factory resetting worked, which I'm not 100% it did. They quickly halted the roll out and were supposed to be recoding it.

So maybe it's a lucky thing we haven't gotten it yet.
Yep still stuck in May here too. I agree it's frustrating that we're usually months behind on getting new features and always last getting security updates. But I am happy that we didn't get that last update that made people factory reset to get into their phones.
Same here
I actually called Samsung yesterday. Sure enough, they blame it on the carrier.....sad.

You might be thinking of international unlocked models that were purchased for use in the US when you say that in the past Samsung provided updates for unlocked models before carrier updates.
Samsung didn't officially start selling unlocked phones in the United States until a couple years ago (I think with the S8) and it has always been Samsung's policy to update the US unlocked phones after all of the carriers have approved the update.
The unlocked international S10 phones are on the July security patch.
Here in the UK the unlocked models get updated first, then around a week or two later the carriers get it. That's been my experience with my Vodafone version S10+, atm the BTU CSC has the July update but still waiting on mine, doesn't bother me too much tho.

In the US Samsung and Apple have a virtual duopoly thanks to the carriers which might be why those carriers are given priority here--unlocked phones are a tiny segment of the market in this country. Phones from Xiaomi, Huawei and Honor aren't available here except as unlocked imports through the mail with no warranty or support.

Sprint got the june update today
I'm definitely tempted to update to a U firmware instead of using the default unlocked firmware. It is super disappointing to get updates last. It used to be the reason to get unlocked phones...
I am on AT&T and I got the June update either the last week of June or the first week of July I want to say.
My wife's unlocked s8 + already got the July update! My unlocked s10 plus is still on may.
How is this a carrier issue? Samsung seriously needs to address this void.
It's seriously pisses me off that I spent almost $900 on a phone and it hasn't been updated now in over two months. I just checked the settings and it says the phone was last updated on May 29th. That's over two months. if there was a clear guide to follow I would have updated to the AT&t firmware by now but it's been many years since I did anything with Odin and I don't want to risk screwing up my phone....ugh
We need to contact Samsung
