I found there is a thread describing how to root the US/Chinese model without unlocking the bootloader -

However it mentions that this'll brick the European model because of the included TWRP version and unfortunately I'm on a ZTE A2017GV1.0.0B08 (Android 6.0.1, Kernel 3.18.20).
Is there any news if this can be done now with the international variant -
I'm not interested in a custom ROM or updating Android, I'm happy at the moment with the 6.0.1 version I have, but really would like root for xposed framework, Titanium, Tasker ...
Is there a different TWRP version that can be used or is it not working due to the ZTE's signature key used?
Alternatively is there a way for the A2017G to re-lock the bootloader that's 100% working/safe, if you don't apply a custom ROM?

It didn't really answer the question : Is unlocking necessary to root, or can we root without unlocking ?
Every tutorials founds all follows the same paths : Unlock first, then root. But why ? is there a reason for that, or is it just a "since i'm rooting, let's unlock it while i'm at it" thing ?

Maybe I didn't fully comprehend the thread - I was under the impression that it bricked some A2017G, while not others and didn't want to take the risk.
Reading through the instructions - which of these steps did you take (and in what order)?
I read it that you do not need to flash TWRP? So can I just root the phone without bricking it and all is good as long as I stay with my 6.0.1 B08 version?
I understand the instructions as
- boot into edl
- install Qualcomm driver
- run axon7root to already root the device (backup seems to be done in the next step?! according to instructions).
However there is no axon7root version for the A2017G (B08) as it was removed due to TWRP?!
All I can find is the axon7backup tool (would you actually do this before you run the axon7root the first time?)
If you run the axon7root, did you do 'axon7root.exe -p 4 -b'
so that it only flashes the boot.img (not TWRP recovery) and therefore this is safe?

Theoretically, yes, you can root w/o unlocking the bootloader. This is how things are done typically with certain manufacturers (LG, Samsung) that rarely offer BL unlocking. To be able to flash TWRP on a locked BL is even more difficult, as it would require a BL-level exploit. The reason that's not an option here is the ability to unlock, which precludes such development.

Regarding Bootloader unlock - I didn't buy the phone in the EU, hence my warranty would be void if I unlock it. And my warranty even comes with screen replacement (not that I ever cracked a screen, but there's always a first).
I have to admit that I'm tempted by Lineage OS, but for now (as I just bought the phone) - if there's a reasonably safe way to root without unlock, I'd prefer to just root and then maybe in a year's time or so switch to Lineage OS...
For now I managed to have my phone recognized as QUSB_BULK and I can boot into edl.
I was trying to use the axon7toolkit (1.1.1), but for whatever reason I cannot use it in commandline mode (maybe as there seem to be different versions, or maybe cause I am on Win7 32bit, no idea).
Any help would be really great!

You can't. Don't even try it if you don't want to face DFU...
Just use the same app that the phone comes with, I think it's WeShare or something like that. It should let you transfer all of your crap via a LAN wifi transmission (If you use a 5GHz hotspot it'll be fast as heck).
Or just unlock the phone. But don't relock it if you do, because you can make a huge mess

If you are not tech savvy, do not attempt the root method. It's for advance user and too many people have bricked their phone already. Just read the threads and you will know what I mean.

And yes I can probably guess the amount of people who bricked their phones. But what if everything were to be laid out simple and I follow the directions in every respect? I'm not going to start rooting until I know what I'm doing. So don't worry. I'm stupid but I'm not THAT stupid.
No your fine lmao I started with this phone so we're pretty much same level. As to my understanding it is possible but I would wait just a bit for the b29 stuff to come out.

I'm only interest in this if I can successfully unlock the bootloader and stock root is possible...from what I've read, BOTH can be done. According to the root thread, the model I need (A2017G) is listed as unlockable, correct? What's the difference between a2017g B02 and B03??

OK I have read far too many of these questions here about root on B29 - so here goes.
1. Go to the ZTE website, download the stock B20, and install it.
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/wip-axon-7-root-bootloader-unlokced-t3441204 use this to get TWRP installed on your phone - don't worry about root.

Now please relax - anyone here with any dev skills whatsoever are neck deep in other projects (like CM13). B29 hasn't been out long and the only stock image we have from ZTE is B20, which doesn't give us a ton to work with

I forgot to add a final step to that list. I've updated it and here's the new one:
Copy everything off your internal storage that you don't want to lose.
Get all of the files you need from the steps below and put them on your microSD card.
Flash TWRP (recovery) using the method in the OP (B27 file is fine). You don't need to flash the boot image.
Unlock the bootloader (B27 is fine): http://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/guide-how-to-unlock-bootloader-stay-t3461165
Flash B29: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68873482&postcount=2
Boot phone, set it up, whatever
*Reboot to TWRP, go to Advanced > Terminal and type: reboot disemmcwp
This will leave you with an unlocked bootloader, a fully functioning TWRP (no data encryption issue), and rooted B29. You will not be able to receive OTAs.
*This disables write protection and allows your changes (such as AdAway) to stick with reboot. You need to run this before your changes will stick. You don't have to use TWRP (you could also use a terminal emulator or ADB), but I find that since you have to reboot anyway, it's just as easy to do it in TWRP.

Yes, ZTE still supports bootloader unlocking on the Axon 7. It is currently on hold, but yes, our understanding is that they will be releasing a new process (likely with Nougat).
I can't think of any reason not to unlock now because you can always re-lock if you want to. Who knows what the new process will entail.

Yea well I was hoping the new tool wouldn't kill the warranty but that's wishful thinking, and after some thought I highly doubt that will happen. So time to unlock the bootloader,l and flash TWRP.....soon as I get off work in 9 hours.

I think ZTE will eventually put out a bootloader unlock without killing the warranty. But, yeah, either way it's easy enough to do it on your own now.

Thank you; thank you, THANK YOU!!!!! I tried for an hour or two, using both ADB and Terminal Emulator to apply this "reboot disemmcwp" fix, and I just couldn't get it to work (I'm on B29). Then, I saw your instructions to use TWRP and followed them, and it worked first time, like a charm!

I had LineageOS (took me roughly 10 hours to install) and decided I wanted to use Daydream, so I somehow was able to get back to stock and upgraded OTA to Nougat. Now I want to lock the bootloader as some apps (Android Pay, Netflix, etc.) will not work/download offically with an unlocked bootloader. I've read about using the 'fastboot oem lock' command, however, fastboot is not working for me. When I try to boot to bootloader the phone just boots into the system.
Before when I unlocked I had to roll back to Marshmallow as the guide I was following said it was not possible to install LineageOS from Nougat. Do I basically follow those instructions again and when I get to the unlock part I lock it instead? Or is it possible to do this from Nougat without having to rollback? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Did you search for a guide? I've seen a bunch over the last month, and surely at least one is for the A2017U
Also, you should know that relocking the bootloader is a very dangerous thing to do. I've seen a bunch of bricks because of this. If you can, avoid locking the bootloader.
Netflix is not really a problem. You can just download the APK and install it, it's not "extra-official". Android Pay is another matter though. Does it detect if the bootloader is unlocked? are you sure you're just not passing safetynet because of root?

I'd really like to use Android Pay but I guess I will avoid locking unless I need to warranty the phone since there is some risk (but in all my life I've never had to warranty a smartphone). But even if bricked, can I use EDL to restore the phone?
Android Pay is detecting the bootloader is unlocked, yes, because I do not have root. Same with Netflix, my device is 'incompatible' on the Play Store due to unlocked bootloader. I sideloaded Netflix but ideally I'd have it through the Play Store for auto updates. Netflix updates the app every couple days.

You can only restore stuff through EDL if your brick is not of the ultimate, send-to-ZTE type. If you end up having a DFU brick (I'm not 100% sure if it happens on U models, but it sure does on Gs and chineses) you would have to send it to ZTE and claim that you don't know why it doesn't work, or pay a fee for them to fix it if you tip them off about what you did. Or get your hands dirty (or rather clean) and tear apart the device then get to EDL via test pads. I had to do that...
Also I don't believe that Netflix updates are critical. See, I tried a bunch of custom ROMs , and to avoid having to browse and download every app I got my apps' APKs from /data/app. So essentially I've been using a nearly one month old Netflix. And it works just like it did back then

I think you can flash an A2017U_FASTBOOT_UNLOCK_EDL through MiFlash and get fastboot, search a bit for that

My P8 is on the latest firmware I recently received OTR from Huawei: GRA-L09C02B405. The phone is starting to have some problems: hight battery drenage, UI freezing and rebooting from time to time.
I'd like to install a previous version of Huawei official firmware, or different a custom ROM (I read about some of them in this forum: any suggestion?). But as far a I understand, unlocking bootloader is required, and it seems that without the code from Huawei I'm blocked

You now have to contact Huawei and request it, providing IMEI, SN, Product Code, Model, and reason why you wish to unlock it.

For both, yes, you need to unlock your phone. For rooting, you have to flash a new boot.img, and for a custom ROM you have to flash the system.img too.
Without the unlocked bootloader you are unable to flash the images /partitions

For both NO, however it tends to be a bit easier if the bootloader is unlocked. Some third party rooting apps may or may not work, depending on what version OS you have installed, without changing the recovery partition.
However it is usually easier to root by flashing with TWRP etc. which necessitates an unlocked bootloader to allow you to flash the said recovery.img and then flashing SU.zip for example.
The same goes for flashing a system.img ( does not need an unlocked bootloader ) eg. use fastboot mode and an ADB shell or even DLOAD if it has the correct signatures. The caveat is that most if not all custom ROMs use a proprietary boot.img so an unlocked BL will be required in this case.

However it is usually easier to root by flashing with TWRP etc. which necessitates an unlocked bootloader to allow you to flash the said recovery.img and then flashing SU.zip for example.
The same goes for flashing a system.img ( does not need an unlocked bootloader ) eg. use fastboot mode and an ADB shell or even DLOAD if it has the correct signatures. The caveat is that most if not all custom ROMs use a proprietary boot.img so an unlocked BL will be required in this case.

I asked Huawei for the code, now I'm waiting for reply.
So, if I understand correctly, even without unlocking bootloader I should be able to flash a previous version of an official firmware, ain't it? I can consider that option if I don't get the code from Huawei

Bootloader unlocking is not needed for upgrading official firmware, unfortunately, normally it is a completely different matter when trying to downgrade .

So, it seems that I really need Huawei help to do something more or less useful for me. They made something such a "unhackable" phone which can be hacked only with their support. And more or less every other vendor I assume.
Quite weird I think.
AFAIK Huawei are/were the only vendors that made it so easy to unlock the BL, esp. when their code generator was online.
Have you heard back from them yet, some people report getting the code within 12 hours ?

I got a first mail the day after I wrote, with them asking to add the reason for the code request.
This morning I answered them them that I wanted to play with root rights & custom rom, and that I was aware of the risks implied.
now (6 hours later) they sent me the code.
Quite a good support I'd say

The product id in a custom firmware is the same as de original firmware?
i use this method to see product id *#*#1357946#*#* but in a custom firmware,because i lost the code but only want to save it,try the unlock page but i dont get code only errors.

i'm struggling with the same issue. UK support doesn't want to give me the unlock code even if my P8Max is blocked on all google related stuff. I can't even get Google services
after the last OTA update ( DAV-703LC233B226 ) installed anymore. But still they persist that I should send back the unit ...
You can unlock your bootloaders by using DC Unlocker.
I've been combing the forums for a couple of weeks trying to get information about upgrading my old note 4 (Verizon, MarshMellow). I wanted to use the Lineage OS 18.1 but I can't find a way to unlock the bootloader. I've tried every method without success. None of the temp root programs seem to work. Odin gets close and then fails at the end. Same for ADB. I can't seem to get a clear answer to a question: Do you have to downgrade to 5.11 before attempting any of this? If so, how is that done on this phone? It is alluded to but not clearly stated anywhere. I'm willing to do the legwork, I just need a clear starting point.

To unlock a device's bootloader it's NOT required device's Android is got rooted.
To flash a custom ROM like LOS you have to find a suitable custom Recovery for your device and flash this as 1st thing of all things.
Thanks for the response. That's what has been confusing. Most of the procedures I've read (some of them older) state the the first step is to temp root with Kingroot or similar. These don't work on my phone so I haven't gotten very far. Others want you to unlock the bootloader first. Same problem, can't find a way to to that in this phone that works. I'm pretty OCD so I'll keep searching.

If you are using an SM-910 with a locked bootloader, like the 910V, then the answer is an unequivocal YES you must first unlock the bootloader before you can accomplish anything substantive with it, and to do that YES you must also downgrade to 5.1.1 to root it and unlock the bootloader. And your device must have a CID 15 eMMC chip to achieve any of this.
how exactly does one unlock the bootloader on this and root in 2022? one of the posts says to not use the original zpst method, and the links on the guide with magisk are dead. every other resource is basically unavailable too.
I wanted to try this since i got a much better phone so if anything happens to my zte then "it is what it is"

ok so I managed to do it myself (quite easily) with just qfil + magisk
I have no idea if anyone is even watching this board anymore who is actually interested in this device but I can post the steps if needed and the files for it
now I would get myself a custom ROM on this but I can't even build one because of my laptop
I can't remount system as rw though
