[Question]Google HDR+ possible for the S8? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

So I had a Moto Z before and came across this thread.. https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z/themes/camera-app-hdr-enabled-t3543988. The app did work, allowing for HDR+ mode flawlessly, so I thought I tried it for the S8. Miraculously it worked ONCE, then froze and I couldn't even use the stock camera app until I rebooted. Can a developer tinker into this app to see why it does not work stable enough for the S8? It would be amazing to get HDR+ for the S8 because Samsung's algorithm is not exactly up to par, it tends to over expose the picture a lot in bright daylight, and under expose in cloudy conditions.

I would like that too! Miss my pixel phone's camera
Verstuurd vanaf mijn SM-G950F met Tapatalk

Very much the same here. My former Pixel (GF stole it from me ) just took way better pictures. I'm pretty sure the HDR+ mode would lift the S8 into another class.

Yes the Samsung camera app tends to over expose a lot in bright daylight with hdr, very disapointing it could make some good pictues

Well for people with a snapdragon S8

Hope that they will port it to Samsung own processor too...

Yeah I'd really like hdr+ on my exynos model

Modded Google camera HDR+ worked fine on my s8+. The auto focus was buggy though. Sometimes it won't focus unless I tap the screen. Other than that it works fine.

Huawei mate s or p8 camera port

hey I wondering if it is possible to port the good camera from Huawei mate s or Huawei p8 , even honor 7 . they are the same with lot of good functions. well nexus 6p is a Huawei device too, do u think it is possible ?
It likely uses the EMUI framework so I doubt it. The Google camera app is great and there are other options on the play store if you don't like the stock one
y cant we have few features like using the fingerprint sensor for taking selfie or scrolling? No such app?

Its a Nexus (AOSP based)not a bloated EMUI phone. That's why it doesnt have those bloated features, nor does it need them. I never take 'selfies' or even use the FFC so it's not important to have for me. You have to remember that this is a Nexus not a skinned UI phone so it only has the bare minimum in terms of software features. If it had Huaweis normal UI it would be slower and the phone would be ruined.

Sorry m8 but the stock camera app sucks. No ISO, no Sutter speed, no manual focus, nothing. Fv-5 is great but it needs some bug fixing cuz sometimes is just wont focus and won't capture at all.

None of that is really required on a phone. The stock camera app works great, and doesn't clutter things up with necessary features. I use my DSLR frequently in manual mode which serves a purpose for a real camera; phones don't need manual adjustments especially not the 6P. Every picture I've taken has come out perfectly the first time I took it. I don't need to play with settings like I did on my LG G3, Nexus 6, or S5.

I don't know about you but I really miss the HTC camera app. Editing the photos in real time using the MF, SP, and ISO can give you the image your looking for. Nevertheless, even on auto setting on FV-5 it takes better photos then the stock camera app on the 6p. For me it always seems to be over exposed and washed out.

Google Camera and HDR+

I know some devs have succesfully ported pixel camera for nexus devices to allow HDR+. Is it possible to do the same for the LGV20 so that we can also expirience that HDR+ software?

So this question really irked me, in a good way of course. Whilst studying for my history exam, I was thinking that HDR+ is essentially software based. The Pixel's camera's specs are kinda mediocre aside from the 1.55um sensor—only f2.0 aperture and no OIS; the best part about the camera is the software to back it all up. So, I looked around to see if you could potentially port the camera app itself, which might have the correct algorithm for HDR+. I came across a dev who made the app Camera NX, which in essence is a port.
So here is a brief overview of the app.
And here he explains how the HDR+ has zero shutter lag.
What really got my attention is the following quote:
This mod is just an update to Chow's Camera NX app, which itself is a port of the Pixel's stock camera app and libraries. What that all boils down to is that you don't even need to be rooted to get Zero Shutter Lag with HDR+ mode right now.

Anyways, since I do not own an LG V20 (I hope to soon, once my Note 4 contract expires), you'll have to do most of the testing and report back, if that's alright. Nonetheless, I hope this was helpful!
Thanks for the reply. I did come across that apk and installed it. It does work as a camera but unfortunatly there is no HDR+ present. There is exposure setting and whitebalance toggles. The other problem i notice is that the slow motion seems worse quality then what is found on the stock app. By all means i am no expert bit if any one else has feedback or have tested this themselves and see improovements or HDR+ present let us all know.
Unfortunately I haven't found Google Camera to work on the V20;it works good on the note 5 though...weird. Stinks because there is no option to make photo-spheres with the V20 .

actually the hexagon dsp on the snapdragon 820/821 does the heavy lifting for hdr+ which works different between the pixels and the 5x/6p. the latter ones only can do software hdr+. there was an interesting post on reddit about this. currently also searching for a modified google camera app as camera nx is only modified for the nexus phones. the lg g5 and v20 are very much capable of what the pixel does.
It probably isn't as simple as that. But have you tried changing the build.prop to identify the phone as a pixel?
I can't try myself as I don't have root access.

Except Google camera app is not available in the store with stock LG V20 software.
Does anyone know if it's possible to use the pixel camera mod with the wide angle lens? I'm not sure how you would put the ability to switch from regular to wide in the app but is there any way to have it default to the wide angle lens instead of the regular one?

There are reports of the app using the wide lens and for others it uses the regular narrow one. For me on my h918 it uses the regular narrow lens. There is no button for switching like on the stock LG camera so as of right now I'm not aware of any way to switch between them.
I've found nice GCam mode suitable for V20

Anybody trie dit on their snapdragon S8+ (Or S8)?
I doubt it will make an amazing difference, since the S8 is already quite good in that department but that could still be interesting. I suppose that on one hand you have Google's superior algorithms, on the other hand they are not fitted to S8 hardware and you probably lose OIS....

HDR+ works? I would be quite surprised.
Yes, it works. I'm not sure how "proper" (because I can not say that pictures are masterpieces) it works, but I can enable that feature, take shot, wait a bit ("hdr processing" message) and get slightly different photo. Process is same as on pixel/nexus. App is stable, no crashes.
Btw, on hdr+ photo info it states that photo is made on nexus 6, and on regular shots in same app - galaxy s8+

I have it and it works well. Google's processing has added a tiny bit more noise compared to Samsung but Google's colors are more realistic (which I prefer) while Samsung's are much too bright/vibrant

I noticed a more noisy image. I dont think its preferable.
My own opinion is that the Hdr is not working properly with this google camera.
You who had the Nexus phone could you take a photo and verify the noise?

It's really not that bad. I could attach comparison photos if you want.
Edit: I'm also using the updated mod (noise reduction) that allows 1080p60fps video
Edit 2: Took some more photos. In daylight to medium/dark lighting, Google's camera seems to take better pictures. I noticed that Google is able to add more detail to the clouds when contrasted with ex: large buildings/trees while Samsung's camera seems to overexpose images and leave the sky almost white.
But for nighttime photos, Google's camera definitely has much more noise. I guess it's a trade off.
Edit 3: Took even more photos with many different lighting/contrasts. Not sure which app I like the best. Sometimes Samsung photos are too bright (but can be partially fixed by darkening the photo) and sometimes the colors seem pretty natural. Samsung's camera has consistently sharper photos than Google. Also with higher contrast, the sky using Google camera is an unaturally deep blue, making the image look artifical/fake.

As far as I understand there are several versions, using different versions of the Google algos (Nexus 6, 5X, Pixel have different processing due to different HW)

There's a snapdragon version link in the first post here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s9-plus/themes/gcam-port-galaxy-s9-s9-t3763849
I've tried it on my Note 9 snapdragon version and it works for the front and back camera, but portrait mode doesn't work on either front or back (freezes up). It does seem quicker than the Gcam mod I had on my S8+, but that could be the snapdragon processor and 8gb or RAM I have...
It's also unstable as I tried to adjust one setting (re-enabling camera shutter sound) and it totally crashed the app and I had to uninstall and re-install, so best not to play with any settings on this version

As for which version - I flashed the one that was for the S9+ - (i don't recall the exact lable or even the link - I got there thru the link earlier in this thread from the person who first stated they had installed and got it working on the Note 9. it is important to download the setup screen shots and be sure to get settings setup exactly like those screen shots show.
Good Luck

A developer IDan is working on a Google Camera port for exynos version for the S9 and Note9. Currently using his latest V0.4 and HDR+ on back camera works good, everyone should try it and you guys should know hes just starting, so in time everything should be working.
Also any donations to him are welcomed.
Details are richer and colors are more natural compared to stock photos.
Also _______
Can the topic name be changed to Google Camera Port for Exynos model.

If you could find the settings screenshot that would be great. I couldn't find them and the gcam on my Note 9 is unstable and some do portrait...
Guys, im not sure if you realize, Gcam wouldnt take advantage of the second camera for low light capability. I've tested via HDR and the noise was just too much. Comparing to Samsung which could produce a good low light picture without much noises generated.

OnePlus 6T Camera Application vs. Pixel Camera Application

I can 100% say it makes a difference. I'll try it out when it gets dark later but just a quick office shot of my Rockstar can and I can easily see the difference. The OnePlus 6T camera application makes the can "pop" more but it loses detail in the process. The GCam (Pixel) camera application makes it much more natural looking and restoring detail. Only con is it shoots 4K at 30 FPS so I'll toggle back to stock software for 4K 60 FPS.
I highly recommend it. It's posted elsewhere but for those who don't snoop around the threads...

I'm a believer!
I agree with this general statement. Get the one with Night Sight and then you have magical night mode as well!
Waiting for the TMo fix so I can give this a test.

It's fixed with latest update
Just wait till @Arnova8G2 adds the ability to control the jpg quality. I have a feeling this is just scratching the surface in terms of image quality. The OnePlus camera software makes images look oily up close. Severe detail loss. Google Camera pretty much reproduces what you see in the viewfinder. OnePlus needs to stop compressing the images so much. These phones have enough space for 100% quality .jpgs.

It does for me sometimes when using the front camera. Clearing the cache sometimes helps

We're not talking sometimes. We're talking every single time I try to take a photo, it crashes right after I press the shutter button. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Still the same. Even if it's just a matter of clearing the cache every so often, that's way more work than necessary for a camera to work that should "just be there". If I'm going to have to fuss about, I'll just take out my real camera and set it to full manual. It will still be faster and better. Until the app is stable, I see no point in using it. I'm not getting paid to beta test. (I do get paid to test new development software though.)

Oryte I didn't think it was everyone.
I'm on 9.0.4 what are you on? No update for mine yet to 9.0.5.
Maybe this is why I'm getting a few crash's and also no blur effect on the Google front camera.

For some reason on this port you only get blur effect when taking a portrait of a person.

Not really sure, I've only used it a handful of times. I normally use my Pixel 3 XL for pictures. I've had my unlocked OnePlus version for four days and besides the photos I tested the portrait mode on that have been deleted I have four pictures in my gallery...lol
I will say this about 9.0.5, screen unlock is now almost instantaneous. The fingerprint reader is now as fast as a hardware one.

Haha I was going to get a pixel 3 XL but for the extra 4-£500 I can't justify it.
I've noticed the picture quality is better with the pixel port I'm happy with the results.
Well I hope to receive the 9.0.5 update soon. The fingerprint scanner on 9.0.4 seems about sketchy it works great sometimes for me but sometimes it doesn't recognize.
Here is a comparison of night modes on stock and pixel camera app on OP6T. the first photo is the pixel camera app and the second one is the stock OnePlus camera app. The stock camera app seems to really wash out the colors. I can definitely say that with my own eyes the Google pixel camera app took a much more true to life image of what I'm seeing out my window.

Yes I agree also abit more detail
I have been using gcam and it looks so much better, and of course that night mode is magical!
I still think a lot if detail is being left out as the file sizes are way too small compared to using past gcams with the 6p or even the other devices using the higher file size options/details that were in advanced options in the previous gcam ports. It's especially showing once you zoom in on the pics.

Why the difference in crop?
Still waiting for a version of GCAM that doesn't break in some way. So far, I'm not impressed with the 6T's camera. Tried taking a shot this morning that's a cakewalk for my LG V30 and the 6T just couldn't pull it off. Ended up having to get out my real camera to get the photo.

to each his own, but I had a v30 and the 6T camera is much better.... Even with the stock app

Well, so far the evidence is quite to the contrary. The V30 can nail the shot every single time, the 6T couldn't nail it even once. Not once. Something tells me you all need to do some wider ranging testing.
