Port of Google camera with HDR+ - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Guides, News, & Discussion

Anybody trie dit on their snapdragon S8+ (Or S8)?
I doubt it will make an amazing difference, since the S8 is already quite good in that department but that could still be interesting. I suppose that on one hand you have Google's superior algorithms, on the other hand they are not fitted to S8 hardware and you probably lose OIS....

exynos lacks dsp unlike snapdargon

I've installed on exynos and everything worked. Full stock, no root

HDR+ works? I would be quite surprised.

Yes, it works. I'm not sure how "proper" (because I can not say that pictures are masterpieces) it works, but I can enable that feature, take shot, wait a bit ("hdr processing" message) and get slightly different photo. Process is same as on pixel/nexus. App is stable, no crashes.
Btw, on hdr+ photo info it states that photo is made on nexus 6, and on regular shots in same app - galaxy s8+

I have it and it works well. Google's processing has added a tiny bit more noise compared to Samsung but Google's colors are more realistic (which I prefer) while Samsung's are much too bright/vibrant

I noticed a more noisy image. I dont think its preferable.
My own opinion is that the Hdr is not working properly with this google camera.
You who had the Nexus phone could you take a photo and verify the noise?

It's really not that bad. I could attach comparison photos if you want.
Edit: I'm also using the updated mod (noise reduction) that allows 1080p60fps video
Edit 2: Took some more photos. In daylight to medium/dark lighting, Google's camera seems to take better pictures. I noticed that Google is able to add more detail to the clouds when contrasted with ex: large buildings/trees while Samsung's camera seems to overexpose images and leave the sky almost white.
But for nighttime photos, Google's camera definitely has much more noise. I guess it's a trade off.
Edit 3: Took even more photos with many different lighting/contrasts. Not sure which app I like the best. Sometimes Samsung photos are too bright (but can be partially fixed by darkening the photo) and sometimes the colors seem pretty natural. Samsung's camera has consistently sharper photos than Google. Also with higher contrast, the sky using Google camera is an unaturally deep blue, making the image look artifical/fake.

tested on my S8plus exynos.... But noisy

Ok thanks for the comparison. Good to know. Im not sarcastic.
What is more interesting yet is differance betwean Google Camera on nexus vs google camera on the s8+
If anybody could take identical pix on nexus vs s8+ and see if the photo from nexus have the same noisines as our s8+ have.

Which version allows for 60fps? I tried to look around for a development thread, but all I found was the XDA article Here. Is that where you got the version you are testing?

As far as I understand there are several versions, using different versions of the Google algos (Nexus 6, 5X, Pixel have different processing due to different HW)

This version works on my Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Exynos version.. can you tell me where to find the follow up for this version in case there is an update .. I tried more than 50 versions of this application this is the first one to be working on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Exynos version thanks a lot
---------- Post added at 12:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:04 PM ----------
But version has lots of notice in low light ... I think a better version is out there ..
Most of the version are for Snapdragon . This is the only working version I found for Exynos .. now just we have to find a version which reduces notice and implements the HDR+ property

im a hobbyist photographer
i'm wondering, perhaps you(or someone) could do a well set up test of the camera of the note 2? i'm curious about the performance as mine is yet to arrive.(eta 1 week)
test setup example:
a full size(detail) daylight, shimmer, shimmer with flash, night and night with flash, macro and distant would be nice to see a comparison of, and if you have one, a reference card (i.e. contrast and color range) ISO range test (noise) and is the white balance with flash alright?
all this information would be nice to have available (perhaps post results to wiki)
Anyone else notice pictures and videos coming out dark?

Could you also comment on the performance of the camera in terms of shutter lag and speed of camera app launched from lock screen?
Here's a HDR mode shot
And a lil standard pic
Thanks for these, although they are downsized quite a bit from the fullres originals they look very good with sharpness and few if any visible artifacts common to cellphonecameras. Except for the second image which has a blown out sky and a bit strong contrast on the chrome parts.
Keep the pics coming, i wanna see more!

Here is a gem from earlier
seems like the Note II's cam firmware tend to overexpose and wash out the colours a bit by default.
unless u do some further tweaking in settings like what OP did, then u should be able to get good photos. I think a cam fw update is required to improve the image quality. I will judge again when there's more sample pictures (shot in default auto settings).
Not mine, but from Note 2.
Here you can find many Note 2 vs Galaxy S3 and some Note 2 photos.

Note 3 camera blur/post processing

Well, hello there,
as you Note 3 owners probably noticed, the Samsung Camera Stock app applies a heavy (!!) blur filter on every picture. Why? Don't know, because it's the Samsung way. My Note 1 made far better and sharper pictures.
But fear not, there is a solution. There is an App called "FV5" in the store which has far less agressive post processing and is much sharper. Here is a comparison.
You should really get rid of the stock-app, I suggest. It's horrible and there is much more in the Note 3 camera when we thought so far. It's pretty ok in combination with the right app.

I have FV5 and Snap camera, but I rarely use my camera unless it's for a drunken pic of something stupid. - Haven't really tested the differences in any of them either. But I will later today
I've had mine little over a week and have to say I have been far from impressed with the pictures it takes.

The hardware itself is pretty good. It just needs the right software to drive it. Without the blur of the stock app you can make nice pictures.

I have noticed that the first image is 9.6 Mp whilst the second is full 13mp
The default setting is 16:9 aspect ratio
Try setting 13mp in standard camera app then repeat your test.
Certainly FV5 has a lot of flexibility if you're familiar with photography settings

I know that was a mistake I made. But fear not, that is not the issue here. In fact it does barely make a difference. It's the Stock-Apps post processing that kills all image quality. FV5 is far superior.

I've also noticed a slight blur with the AOSP Camera app under CM 11. But at least there is no annoying post-processing. I would say the stock camera app does provide the best image quality results, due to the post-processing, since the hardware by itself is nothing incredible (the sensor is rather small compared to the sensors used in the latest Sony and Nokia phones). A bigger sensor not only enables greater detail, but when combined with OIS (like in the aforementioned phones), minimizes blur as well. I tried the FV app, and while it has a lot of added functionality, I did not like the layout in which they were implemented, and the picture quality was similar to the stock Samsung app. If the Lenovo Super Camera app worked on my ROM, that would probably be the best alternative.

Sorry, but the Stock Camera App from Samsung applies HEAVY post processing. It basically blurs the whole image, all sharpness is gone. It's horrible. FV5 does take much better pictures.

You will take even better pictures with FV5. The stock apps noise filter is so heavy that it blurs everything, imo it's impossible to shoot a really sharp picture. It's always kinda blurry.
Take some photos and compare, it's super obvious.

Brilliant photos! I think it's a brilliant camera...I do think the colour is slightly flushed out in some of the 'nature' shots...more vibrant on the S6 camera...but when you consider ALL phones features, the G4 craps on the S6 overall.

Best option is to shoot in DNG and edit those images in a program like Photoshop or Lightroom. A standard DNG file will look like **** untill you play around with the settings, you will get great contrast, colours

Spot on...the only issue there is, I dpn't think we have Adobe Lightroom for Andriod yet, lol...and it can take a few minutes of mucking around if you are meticulous with bright, deep contrasting colours...the S6 does this better than the G4, but as you have said, shootingin RAW/DNG format allows you countless possibilities if you have the program and are prepared to learn and/or spend time in Lr fixing it up.

Thanks! It wasn't intentional.. I Just cropped it until I thought it looked good!
I use it for pulling out some of the shadows with the "Ambience" control. I also like to bring out some details and sharpness depending on the image. I have used it to add blur and do some spot repairing in some images as well as use the brush to increase/reduce saturation in specific areas. I like the fact you can edit your history and even mask out areas of a certain effect, very useful!

Camera issues?

I'm planning to pick up a G6 this Friday to replace my G5. But I'm slowly becoming aware of the camera issues that are being posted. Is this something you think will get addressed with a software update, or should I wait a few weeks for the S8 even though I'm not a big fan of curved screens?
Sent from my LG-H830 using Tapatalk
What camera issues? Mine has been working great.
I've got no issues at all. I LOVE the camera. Even in auto mode it's amazing. Really really happy that they got rid of the laser focus. Photo attached is no editing just wide angle and hand held
There's a thread titled "LG G6: Is it worth buying?" where a bunch of people are talking about the bad camera quality.
Sent from my LG-H830 using Tapatalk
There's no camera issue, it's just not as great a camera as it should be. If you take photos in wide angle they are superb, but single lens shots are sub parts. It's digital processing is awful. Hopefully there's an update to fix.
Sent from my LG-H830 using Tapatalk
how's it compare to the GS7? I just pulled the trigger the other day and it's coming tomorrow. I could not find any full review articles or videos on youtube with the final software and hardware version. I wanted to see comparisons to the GS7. I finally got tired of waiting for reviews and went ahead and ordered it. Hope i made the right decision. I'm pretty picky about cameras.
I love the camera one thing I really really love is auto focus is much better than the lg g4 was. Also love that just tapping a a different spot on camera can easily adjust the exposure while maintaining a full frame focus. I'm the pictures at times from the gs7 may appear better but it also depends on what device they are being viewed on. I mean if I watch 1080 videos on my low end barely HD monitor th3 comparisons are useless. Sadly not enough pictures ever get printed. Plus wide angle for the win. Sample quick take from the beach on sunday.

Reviews already show the S8 selfie camera is awful too. What's the point of auto focus if it still makes you look like a cartoon and "beautify's" everything. Side by side comparisons online with the Pixel and iphone 7 show the S8 (and samsung) is still awful for selfies.
The selfie camera is a little blurry but not that bad. For 5MP it's to be expected. Yes, it's not as versatile as the back camera setup, but I guess if you're not used to having to plan shots to get the composition you want, it can seem crap by today's standards. blurry in darker shots, but does well enough for me. Using the filters that are on by default make it worse too. (Can't guarantee that the image I attached doesn't have any filters added as I don't remember when I took the shot. I think it is slightly filtered)
I was concerned every shot with the back camera would need to be "tweaked", but I'm surprised how well it does with auto. You can modify gamma on the fly too which is nice (and necessary with more difficult shots). Keep in mind though if you're cropping to 16:9, then it will affect perceived image quality. That can affect the blurriness of the non-wide angle lens tbh since it's the lesser of the two. Both take great shots though on automatic.
The wide angle is the best one of all three.
I attached a photo taken with selfie lens. You can judge for yourself. Personally, I think it looks fine. Most shots are going to be viewed on mobile so resolution won't be as important as the back camera. I don't use selfie cam too often though, but if it's your primary camera, then yes you will be disappointed by the step down and will likely want to go for something with a higher res like S8...
This is comparison of night shots of two back lens... wide angle versus non-wide angel camera... as you can see, both have their advantages and disadvantages.
---------- Post added at 04:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:21 PM ----------
Here are a bunch of microshots. Does it have it's weaknesses? Oh yes. Is it a bad camera. Not at all.
Pro Tip: Sometimes I notice sometimes you have to "zoom in" just a tad in order to get the autofocus to catch stuff up close but it's rare. My point and shoot does the same thing. (Also there is manual focus)
No issues at all with the cameras here. FWIW, I like them a lot better than the G4.
Just because of this thread, I had to try in near total darkness... It turned out pretty clear. I'm not disappointed at all. I came from S7 Edge, and I can say for a quick low light picture, it is a "little" better, but by no means is this camera a disappointment. But, when there's light, it's better than S7. I'm very happy with the phone.
I am having horrible camera pictures. Worse then the last few phones i've had. The panorama has double images and it's wavy. The reviews on youtube says it works good. all the pictures look like the grass and trees was painted with water colors. it's awful. I'm worried about what I"m going to do now. I can't keep my GS7 since I upgraded so there's no turning back unless i exchange my phone but for what model? I don't want a Galaxy with a curved screen so the options are limited at Verizon. I would upload some images but how do i post the images from my computer? The image button wants a url.

Can you post some of your shots? So we can compare?

Just because of this thread, I had to try in near total darkness... It turned out pretty clear. I'm not disappointed at all. I came from S7 Edge, and I can say for a quick low light picture, it is a "little" better, but by no means is this camera a disappointment. But, when there's light, it's better than S7. I'm very happy with the phone.

I tried auto mode with and without HDR. Btw there's no HDR button so I have to go in the settings every time I want to turn it on our off. Totally unacceptable. I tried manual mode too. I have it at 16:9 at the highest resolution. Is there a quality setting I missed?

I have got a screen shot of my settings. It was done in auto. I used the mode/filter called "1839". Also, if you tap on the object you want it to focus on, you'll see a slider (I circled it in other screen shot) which your can use to make adjustments to make pictures clearer in low light or put your own tweak on a picture.

There is an attach button under post writing form. You need to be in advanced mode to attach. The button is "Manage Attachments"

Thanks. I knew i should have looked there. I'll take a look.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Moto X4 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I have an S8 too and these cameras are right up there. Plus I love the extra effects like bokeh. The sensor looks cool too.

Could easily be a five star camera. It's definitely better than the G5 Plus and challenges my S8.
thanks for the review. I have a G5Plus, and am looking to change it up to the X4, solely based on the garbage camera in my g5Plus. Can you post some photos? preferably along side the G5Plus if you happen to have them

Same sensor, darker lens. The x4's camera is weaker than G5 plus's in paper. Fortunately X4 is compatible with Google HDR+. I took amazing photos with it.
Some examples. Taken with gcam HDR+

There is no moto specific version. I use the Arnova version with Nexus 6p hdr+ settings.
Hej there,
I recommended this phone to a friend after reading some reviews and they all mentioned how good the camera is.
But my friend is not very happy with the photos. The quality is great but any (even little) movement results in a blurry pictures, which is very annoying.
But see for yourself: https://photos.app.goo.gl/PJ4jJUZ1FBgaSV586
(Note: these pictures have been sent via Whatsapp to me)
No review mentioned that. Maybe its a layer 8 issue
Any ideas?
Thank you

Try with HDR off, if it isn't alreadym but Gcam will probably solve this. Much better night performance, faster shutter times etc. Also has proper video stabilization.
Since complaints about the camera are often posted on forums, here is my setup although it is not the best possible anymore, as I am using the same old/outdated Gcam version since several months. Once I get the Pie update I will test Gcam 6 with night mode. For now, I am using cstark27_Gcam_5.1.018_24_v3.8 ( https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/cstark27_GCam_5.1.018_24_v3.8.apk ) . Image quality is good, although the pictures are sometimes a bit flat so I have to do some post-editing in Snapseed to increase contrast/saturation. Other/newer gcam versions have settings for saturation etc.
I have changed a some of settings, I think most important changes are:
In submenu Advanced:
> HDR+ control ON
> Model: Pixel 2 XL (Taimen)
> Exposure time: I often change it depending on the situation, if you want to avoid motion blur (like you have in your examples), put it on 'Fast' or 'Slow', I often put it on Very Slow because I am mostly taking stills
> Frame count: Default or Medium should be fine, although I set it to Super High if I want to take night shots
Then in your main camera interface (with the viewfinder) you have an HDR toggle on top, use HDR+ on in normal conditions or if the subject is moving fast, use HDR+ Enhanced in difficult conditions.
I never compared it to a high-end phone but I'm pretty statisfied with the camera. Really low light is tricky and OIS would have been great but for the price I bought it performs well (and the wide angle cam is a nice bonus too, although it lacks detail).
Can't wait to get Pie so I can experiment with newer Gcam versions.
I think we can all agree that stock camera app is scheisse, but the hardware is pretty competent, with a nice gcam port photos come out lookin great. I use 6.1.021v.0.1TlnNeun and it worked great since 8.1 (I'm now on Pie). I think it might be this but we can also try this one.
Cheers.
Best Google Cam port for my Moto X4
I have a Moto X4 Android One model XT1900-1 and have tried several .apk that would crash after taking a Night Sight photo, or if successful in taking a Night Sight photo would then crash when trying to close out of Night Sight mode and returning to the normal camera. The .apk I'm suggesting comes with it's own presets but I found that it produces too much noise in my medium/low light photos (with the normal cam, not night sight mode). Also, after changing the defaults it seems more responsive. While testing for yourself don't forget to clear the app's cache after crashes and if making changes to the camera types in the base settings you need to reboot. The most important thing is that this .apk is very stable on my particular phone. I don't know about all the other functions. All I care about is normal camera mode as well as night sight mode. Thank you to the developers!
