Ordered direct from Samsung and received a Sm-G955U? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Guides, News, & Discussion

I pre-ordered my S8+ for AT&T (which should be SM-G955A) with the Fully Immersive Bundle directly from Samsung and received everything yesterday. The phone is actually a SM-G955U with the AT&T firmware. I'm wondering if someone with an S8+ bought from the AT&T store could check their phone and report their model info back. If and when the unlocked version comes out I'm thinking I could Odin that ones firmware onto this phone how we did the S7 Edge and loose all the AT&T bloatware and have an unlocked version.

I'm not a 100% sure, however, I think all (if not most) of the US models are the SM-G955U variant.
Again, not 100% sure but pretty certain that's the case.
I ended up purchasing an international model because I hate US carriers and what they do to these beautiful devices -> so I wouldn't be able to double check for you.

Unlocked versions have a locked bootloader. Unlocked and unlocked bootloader arent the same thing

Completely understand that. Not looking to unlock the bootloader at all. More interested in having a de-bloated phone. I know I can disable and/or hide these apps but they still waste storage space.

There's a couple threads on this over in the regular s8 section. All US phones are U models flashed with carriers firmware. The BL are locked and the word on the street is that the phone locks to the sim carrier it's first booted on, if this is true I'm not sure. I received mine today and haven't even booted it up yet. Doing some research first and my S7E is running like a champ rooted so I figured why rush. I pretty much turned my s7e into a s8 anyways lol

I bought a att one and didnt even put the att card in it. I put my cricket sim in(owned by att) and worked perfectly. Att bloat is still there so the myth that the sim card determines what bloat gets installed is out the window(heard alot of people say on here that if you factory reset and put a different carrier sim card in it installs that bloat lol)

I think it has to be a major carrier, not really sure how big cricket is but I did see a video of this actually happening.

No they don't, none of the US snapdragon phones have an unlocked bootloader.

I'm on AT&T, same model number

I am a developer for a package disabler and looking at the stats, I can confirm that Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint, and AT&T all show SM-G955U as device model.

They just moved the carrier letters to the end it doesn't mean all the carriers are the same models just because last year the U after the number meant the unlocked version. For this year you need the XAA to have the sim unlocked 4 carrier version.

i believe you are incorrect.. my device does not say anywhere on it that it is a verizon device outside of course of the vzw bloat..
the only thing that differentiates the different carriers in all of the firmwares available is the user data partition, other than that they all appear identical with the same model number and build numbers
---------- Post added at 08:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:09 PM ----------
also to add, you dont need the unlocked variant to have it unlocked.. vzw is unlocked by default and other carriers can also unlock it if all requirements are met of course

Wake me up when someone successfully transforms a Sprint to a T-Mobile or an AT&T to a Verizon. Its a great theory you guys have but its a big $$$ risk to have to hope it happens.

Aside from the bloat each carrier has you can easily see what phone you have in less than 30 seconds.

Let me know when you flash that vzn model to a tmb model.

Unlocked/International Version for use with US/GSM Carrier

I would definitely prefer an unbranded phone, usually that means 'International' model? Any suggestions on where I should be looking to buy one?
Here on "pre-order launch" day, the only offers I see are for carrier branded phones.
In case I've made an error in logic, I'll note what I'm trying to do: I use a MVNO GSM carrier with an unlimited data plan, so I'm looking for a "GSM" S7-EDGE that is carrier unlocked. I'll check the LTE bands and all... the question is, where to buy one of these?
Not sure on international models however you'll want to check out tmobile. There always unbranded and I believe I read somewhere it has all 4 bands except cmda? Can't confirm the cmda one. Also the bootloader are unlocked.
Expansys and eBay are your best bets when the time comes

TMOBILE phones are not Unbranded at all - they include a bunch of bloat and their branding is all over the software in their phones - I don't think they put the name TMOBILE on the phone itself, but I thnk Unbranded means much more than just that. I am not meaning to criticize, just pointing out the fact that I don't think TMOBILE Phones could be considered unbranded.
Having said that, they do work beautifully on other compatible networks.
Just preordered my Samsung Galaxy S7 (930T). Hopefully this T-Mobile phone will get rooted quick. I'm done with AT&T phones.... paid outright, and will unlock through T-Mobile....

My Bad... thanks for the heads up
Here's an unlocked probably European phone from Expansys
http://www.expansys-usa.com/samsung-galaxy-s7-unlocked-32gb-black-onyx-288135/
I think it's the European because it's listed as an Octa core (Processor: Octa-Core / 2.3 GHz Quad + 1.6 GHz Quad) if I'm not mistaken the SD820 isn't Octa but the Exynos is and Europe is supposed to be getting Exynos.
If those bands are correct that is very limiting. I'd still hold out and wait to see the full support listing.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Isn't that you can just use qualcomm's QXDM,QPST and DFS to unlock all the band? Just need have root first.
maybe, but you should rely on it. Let's just say for example Samsung changes how things are in this version or we can't find an exploit for 6 months to a 1 year? That's just me though. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
So I was planning to get the international version (Exynos) Galaxy S7 Edge, but After using the Live Chat on Samsung website, they told me as of today the International Version of S7 DOESN"T support the Samsung Pay yet.... any ideas?
I am trying to unlock one for my family member from t mobile. Anyway to unlock it for international use without paying a fortune?
---------- Post added at 04:20 AM ---------- Previous post was at 04:16 AM ----------
Is it true what they are saying that when you first put the sim in the phone and turn it on it locks itself to that carrier?? SO IF I PUT IN att sim in tmobile phone it will be locked to att ?

I'm in Australia, so no Samsung Pay yet, but it could be handy.
I'm sure certain European Roms get updates sooner too.
Ok, checked Sammobile again and this looks safe. Looks to be an unbranded Australian rom.

Samsung Pay on G930F / G935F (International Variant)

Hi, anybody got Samsung Pay working on the International Variant of the S7 / S7 Edge (G930F / G935F) in USA.
I flashed mine with UK firmware:- PDA (G935FXXU1APB4), CSC (G935FVIR1APB3)
Sideloaded :-
Samsung Pay Framework 2.1.06 (http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/samsun...ng-pay-framework-2-1-06-android-apk-download/)
Samsung Pay 1.7.04 (http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/samsun...ease/samsung-pay-1-7-04-android-apk-download/)
But I get this message :- "Failed to connect to server. Try again later."
Google Play says :- "This app is incompatible with all of your devices." (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.samsung.android.spay)
Note: I am using T-mobile with my phone.
Sorry if this is a duplicate post.
Thanks
If I install both .apk files it lets me get all the way up until the add card screen and once I take a picture it just infinitely loads.
Edit: I got past that by going into settings and giving Samsung Pay and Samsung Pay Framework all permissions asked. When I get to the screen where it's validating the card after the TOA it just gives me the server error.
Also if I try to use my fingerprint it just takes me back to the pin option screen, I can't proceed unless I use a pin
Note: I am using an AT&T MVNO (cricket)
It's not out yet in the UK and no card issuer currently supports it, it won't work until then.
So even though I am in US, I cannot use Samsung Pay.
I am feeling a little bit restricted here Samsung, as far as I knew, Samsung was not Apple. But now, its hard to say.

Are you using international variant of S7
Yes
Yeah that's what I though. Wait until Samsung pay releases in the UK and then add my cards after. But it's sucks. It shouldn't be firmware attached. Oh Samsung.. Now debating if I should wait or just root and enjoy a rooted s7 edge
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
For me, Samsung Pay is worth the wait
So I was about to buy an international Galaxy S7 Edge G935F to use with my AT&T line... but after checking here and there I couldn't find an answer for the Samsung Pay..even the customer support for the Samsung Pay said that they are only trained to answer questions for US vairants S7 only but they told me I can try install the app and see if it will work or not as it still only support in the US only, but they mentioned an update to come later but to certain markets..my biggest fear is that if it didn't reach the international version at all!!

No. The tmobile firmware has the snapdragon variant. We have the exynos. And even so, without root, Odin most likely wouldn't let us flash the tmobile firmware on an international device. US carriers think their versions of the phones firmware is sacred. Wish Samsung used it's size and just went the apple way. One variant, all carriers. One software the model no matter where it's sold

Even with root you won't be able to run the T-Mobile firmware on it. Think of it as using a whole different architecture.

I've never used these mobile payment apps but I've been interested in trying them out. I don't have an S7 yet but Samsung Pay was one of the things I was looking forward to.
Any thoughts on how Samsung Pay would compare to Android Pay? Do I lose a lot by using Android Pay over Samsung Pay?

Is there anyway to get the recent update without an ATT sim card?

If you are in US u can take ur mobile to best buy and get it updated.. odin is not possible as of now as at&t didn't release any firmware...

Unfortunately not yet... Locked Bootloader! Need the Exynos unlocked model.
There have been other devices that had locked bootloaders and were rooted, Sony Z1S & a few other brands and models if I recall.
I understand an exploit needs to be found and assume one will be eventually. Just curious if anyone will be working on the SD835s
---------- Post added at 10:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:01 PM ----------
I know installing custom ROMS will likely be a nonstarter with the locked bootloader. The stock ROM is good enough as a base with some minor debloating, in this case I'm interested in root so I can use titanium backup and other root tools.

I just posted they are working on the 835 to get it rooted.
And yes other devices with locked BLs have been unlocked, bypassed etc etc but not the later sammy devices.
S7 is a year old now and the BL is still locked.
Exynos is the the only way to go at this point.

Sorry missed that, good to know!...But interesting. I was under the impression the G95xU designation meant it was unlocked. I've got one of those on TMo I've got both variants g955u and g950u hence why I was asking.

Seems this year all the US models are designated "U"..whether bought from samsung or the carriers.
The last few years U meant carrier unlocked which has zero to do with the bootloader

That sucks that international phone doesn't support Band 30 for at&t LTE.

If we could get a definite answer for this, the bands supported, by testing via side by side comparison of two varents near a ATT cell on band 30, then I would perhaps be convinced to go with the international varent. Could an early adopter who has happened to use both with an ATT carrier comment on this?
Otherwise I really enjoy the Snapdragon's support for demestic LTE bands, and FM radio. I travel through either urban zones of full cell coverage, or rural zones with none at all, so I prefer the fact that I can maximize the utility of both my radios in both environments.

Any Luck Activating Unlocked Flashed S20U5G on VZW?

I've been trying since Saturday but the network doesn't recognize the device, can't get them to whitelist the imei and they're saying my 988U1 is not compatible, it was a Sprint 988U to start
I bought the unlocked version from Samsung, did a Sim swap and everything works fine. You'll have to give Sprint a call, they like to lock IMEIs even after full device payment
Why didn't you just return it? Phone isn't even 14 days old... Carriers will not unlock a device for a couple months usually to "deter" theft.
I had no issues activating on Vz after flashing carrier firmware on my unlocked device. I didn't try it when it was unlocked so can't say on that. Why not flash it to the Vz firmware? There's a thread on it if you search for it.

OP said it was a Sprint 988U from the start, so either he's talking about software or device being from Sprint carrier. Assuming it's Sprint device since many people have had issues pertaining to locked devices from Sprint
If you activated it with sprint, how long would you have to use the device before they allowed you to unlock it,? EE UK usually makes it easy 6-9 money's depending on the handset but I think the Vs with Verizon and sprint is a little more competitive.
