Few observations - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Guides, News, & Discussion

First off, the screen is beautiful! As is the phone, it feels great in the hand too. Battery life seems good.
Charging speeds are amazing, sound quality is amazing, usb c port is great to have!
But, I hate that you can't hide the soft keys. i.e home and back button while playing games, I wish there was an option to auto hide them, so I get full screen gaming experience! Also, I downloaded GTA 3 for it and noticed there is some noticeable lag, even when on lowest settings, what is going on there?? Also it doesn't matter what resolution I have the phone running at.
Other than that it is a great phone, hopefully it'll last me a few years!! Hoping the battery degregation fact they said during the announcement is right too!

No soft keys showing for me, they auto hide.

Have you tried going into settings and searching for "Full Screen Apps" and turning it on for the games where it's happening?

Impressions after 3 days with the HD

Pro's:
- screen (size, sensitivity, resolution)
- fast processor + huge storage memory
- Youtube playback (only use WiFi). Very good quality, only few occasional frame rate issues
- very good phone quality (audio)
- can mostly be operated by finger, although sometimes you do need the stylus. To me that's no problem.
- format (seems big, but fits perfectly it in your jeans' pocket)
So/so:
- Opera. At times I like it, other times I don't. Maybe I just need to get used to it...
- HTC keyboard. It works, but could be improved.
- Camera is OK, but not spectacular.
- no D-pad, although I have barely missed it so far
Cons:
- Soft reset button is behind back cover. Haven't had the need to use it yet but I am afraid this may become annoying
- LED in On/off button looks stylish, but now I have to look closely on top of my device, rather than to get a quick glance from a distance to see if I missed any phone calls or messages
- Device isn't entirely 'flat on the back' because of camera, which causes some instability while operating it lying on a table
- Virtual buttons; didn't find a way yet to assign different functions
- Not all software works (eg. HiCalc). But this will only be a matter of time
Haven't tested yet:
- movie playback
- MP3 playback
- GPS
Conclusion: so far I am pretty happy with the HD. Ofcourse it could be improved. But that counts for all devices out there...
Hah... This is EXACTLY how I view the HD... nice sum-up Apart from Opera, I do like it, even when it's a little sluggish at times, but mainly because it's on the HD i like it, the huge screen makes most of the difference.
For the keyboard I use TouchPal. Google it. Love it.
The camera is GOOD in good lighting conditions but VERY VERY bad in poor lighting, so yeah, so-so average.
Oh, I regard Audio playback as so-so, video playback as PRO despite what a lot of other people think (so-so). My movies play like a breeze and it's all super sharp thanks to the screen (use CorePlayer).
GPS is also a PRO... I used to own the Diamond (which also did an OK job at it) and I don't know what they improved but they did, I easily get 8-12 or even more connections in Google Maps almost instantly. No inherent GPS lag anymore either. I confirmed it was there on my diamond and confirmed it wasn't there anymore on the HD. Except in Google Maps, there is a slight delay, but that has been commonly agreed upon as an issue in GM and not in the HD.
For the soft reset.....
You can either just power down the device (press and hold power button) and then power back on. It's the same as a soft reset.
or...
I use PHM power toys (they are free) and once installed you get a soft reset program icon. Stick that in the program section of touchflo and no need to take the back off

Er... if the phone freezes, then the power button doesn't work - so you need to hit the soft reset button.
I'd like to be able to turn off/change the function of the volume buttons - too easy to accidently press them - and they are very sensitive. When you want to change the volume they seem very nice, tactile and smooth, but they're just too sensitive when you don't...

I'm the guy who sand-papered the faceted back of his diamond, so for me - drilling a small hole in the back cover to uncover the soft reset button would also be an option.
Thats a good point monkeyboy....
....I'll get me coat
I have used the GPS with TomTom 7 and works like a dream.
Tip: Use Quick GPS to download data first - last for 6 days.
I migrated from Trinity to this phone and have never looked back apart
from the camera - is there a way to stop the 3 second delay and take instant photos without autofocus on -perhaps a reg hack?

i cant believ you would actualy do that mate thats realy funny but if you did that wont that cause dust to go into your device and cause damage and how would you sell it of
Hah I still can't believe you sandpaper the back of the Diamond roflmao
But of course he takes the cover off before drilling a hole into it, makes sense don't it
well I am on day two .. its an up and down relationship. One thing doesn't work .. find a how to sort it .. another thing comes up. I wouldn't say that is a phone for the masses.
Day 2 for me and so far:
Pros:
The screen is amazing for ebook reading. Much bigger, clearer & sharper than my Prophet.
I didn't actually realise there was a radio, but it works really well.
The Teeter game is amusing and fun to show off with.
The GPS is very accurate and, because I walk/get the bus, it doesn't need huge amounts of maps, so data's not too bad.
Cons:
TouchFLO has gone. It was too slow for me (no nice run-finger-along-to-scroll)...
No D-pad meant I had to rebind the volume keys to up/down - they work fine now.
The Opera browser doesn't always register my clicks on the links.
I'm very happy with it so far. It does everything I need (which is simple - phone, ebooks, music player!) and does it well with extras. Husband doesn't like it because he likes physical keyboards, but hey!

Take it that goes under the 'Pros' heading then
Day 3 for me too, so I thought I'd share
Pros
blimey - where to start?!
This is my first WM device (see Cons), so pretty much everything is a bonus - but stand out moments have been:
YouTube on the move - I'm not a huge YouTube fan (or at least I wasn't), but I can now while away my time whilst taking a coffee / fag break from work. Beats picking up a book and reading 3 pages before having to put it down.
GoogleMaps. No huge use for me as satnav (got that built into the car), but lots of fun already showing it off to mates LOL
Lots of techy tweaking to be done (yes, I am a Geek at heart...)
Onbviously at lots of this is down to the size and quality of the screen - the main reason that this is my first WM device was being put off by trying to browse etc on a screen the size of a large stamp - the HD size (for me) is about the best compromise - big enough to read, small enough to fit in the pocket.
Cons
becuase it is my first WM device, I'm still trying to desperately get my head around it all!
Getting there though
Congrats on your HD!
Half my friends group has the iPhone, the rest, well, something else. Then I got my HD and lots of them ordered it too, so now it's 4 HD's My father and brother both got the Diamond, and at work many of my colleagues have some version of HTC phone ranging from the TyTNII to the Touch Pro... These things pop up everywhere...

Wake delay issue

Sometimes the Galaxy S II seems to have a slight delay when waking it by pressing the Home or Power button.
I saw a Thread about it in a german Phone forum where a lot of people reported this. I myself noticed it too. I'm running KE2 with Widgetlocker. I can disable Widgetlocker, it still happens.
If you wake it just after locking, it will be instant. If you wait a couple of seconds you will get a delay when waking the device. But it doesn't behave the same all the time, sometimes it's even instantly when waiting for a few minutes.
Can you guys confirm this?
yeah same problem here. I thought the latest update had fixed it but it still seems to be there
Oh and something other that I noticed, while having the phone connected to my pc, it always wakes up instantly.
prob coz its clock the CPU down while screen is off.

Either that or its the power management when its not being charged.
My lg 2x do not have this delay, should be able to fix in a kernel mod

Great to hear that! I didn't have this either on my Desire and it was clocked down to 200Mhz...
Oh and another thing, can you disable the double Home button press? Because if you press it 1 time you are getting a slight delay because it has to wait if there will be a second press. I don't need the double-press voice Feature.
Hey. 1st post. Been reading for a while, but the wake issue annoyed me too, so I tried WidgetLocker with not much change. PowerAmp's lock widget seems to make it faster, but I found if you lower the res of the wallpaper on your lock screen, the waking is instant, which I recently realised.
I go to interfacelift.com and choose a wallpaper at 1400x900 (or so. Usually a good one for the actual background, so it doesnt really matter much for the lockscreen) save it and open to allow you to change the lock screen wallpaper. It does mean it won't be the nicest image, but it's made my phone waking sooooo much faster.
Cheers
Thanks for that, it appears to work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095371
have you tried this?
I have tried copying over the modified framework and a low resolution (800x480) solid black wallpaper but no luck.
This is starting to agitate me to be honest. I’ve been telling the guy opposite me at work that S2 is the best phone available at the moment for a couple of weeks now. He ignored me and brought the sensation.
Now he has a phone that switches on immediately when he presses the power, immediately switches to his home screen when he presses the home button and his battery is lasting twice as long as mine.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d still rather have the S2. But as the new toy feeling starts to where off the little things are starting to bother me.
i have the same issue.
Well, i had the same lag at power on.
what i did :
1 change wall paper to a standard one, in the samsung gallery wallpaper. Chose one screen WP... ans applied it to both on lock and screen wallpaper
test, switch it of and on.... No lag
I applied back my large customized wallpaper i had before and applied on screen, didn't touch lock screen cause i use Widgetlock...
Now, no more lag....
It's not a cpu sleep issue, just a bug in lock screen wallpaper in my opinion....
Thanks for the suggestions Cuspide but it didn't help me unfortunatley. I even brought widgetlocker in case it was that.
It is true, it may be a minor problem but it is so annoying.
When using my HD2 with Windows Mobile, the wake up was instant, in fact even with Latitude, Email and Facebook syncs, the battery life was fantastic. HD2 with Android obviously reduced battery life and there was the wake up lag - I thought all these niggles would go with an 'actual' Android phone, but it doesn't seem that way...
I have tried the following with no luck;
- modified framework and CRT animation
- installing SetCPU and putting the governor to performance (and min 1200Mhz)
- setting a lower resolution lockscreen picture (800x480)
I'm hoping it is only software related, and something Samsung will fix very soon.
I believe that it is a mere software issue.
My Desire clocks down to 245Mhz when it's sleeping. And it wakes instantly and clocks back up to 998Mhz. The change is completely unnoticeable.
And the GSII with 1.2Ghz and 1GB of RAM - hopefully this will be fixed in a future update.
This seems to just be a kernel sleep issue.
I would imagine it's fixable in a kernel update.
I've noticed that the delay isn't apparent when the phone is on AC power. Plug your charger in and wake the phone up and it's instant, take it off charge and wake it up and there's the delay again.
it's the sleep policy. open an IM like ebuddy (it voids device to get in sleep policy) and no delay at all
update
hi Guys
has anyone found a way around this. The wakeup delay is very annoying..........

Screen way too sensitive

I have searched around but have not been able to find a solution, I have a new (two days old) Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge +. I love the phone so far, Android 5.1.1 is great, I have always like the TW interface, but I have this one nagging issue, and believe it or not its a big problem. The phone works super in all aspects but with games. Which during my off time I love Tower Madness and Clash of Clans they are my go to solitaire games =) BUT...... The touch screen on this phone is so sensitive it has a hard time registering the difference between screen scrolling or tap to select. So if I go to tap a unit it scrolls the screen ever so lightly before I even tap, then moves the screen, then I have to tap ever so accurately and deliberate or hit it a million times to register I am tapping not scrolling.
This is the one area the phone is just so bad. I have actually tested this over and over and I can scroll the screen without physically touching it holding my finger just above it say 1/16th of an in or less and it will move with my finger like the hover option on my old Note and Note 2. I cannot for the life of me find any sensitivity setting and its a phone issue not an app issue, unless the app can make you scroll the hardware without touching it . The only setting I can find is the mouse/touchpad sensitivity setting which has no affect on this.
Has anyone else been able to fix this?

And I thought it was just me who's thinking that I could literally scroll and use the touch screen without touching it :silly: (may be from 1 mm distance). The effects are less after I've put on the Zagg screen protector, its really thick and rubbery ( with friction). I think they did it to make it work even with gloves on or something since I couldn't find any option to turn on/off the glove mode previously introduced. I also miss the air gesture features introduced with S4.
Yeah it's annoying being forced to have a glove mode at the sacrifice of running apps in the first place. One feature should not defeat the phones use like this.

Interesting, I have the opposite issue. The screen seems much less sensitive than my normal s6 edge.

Even I noticed it, but it's not as drastic as it's for you, so I guess I can live with it. Also at times when holding the phone in one hand it registers my finger from the sides and hinders my main input.

That was happening before. After the Spigen Case, no more...
Any luck?
I wondered if there were a resolution to this issue? I have a new Samsung Galaxy Note 5, and am having the same issue. I play DomiNations, and every tap pans the screen. It's maddening.
I wish, too, I could use the S Pen stylus, but I think that might be more of a game implementation issue than anything.
Open Phone Dialer.
Dial *#2663#
Press TSP FW Update (General)
This will update screen drivers to latest version - has totalloy cured my screen tap scrolling sensitivity issues.
Settings/accessibility/dexterity and interaction/tap and hold delay. Change the 0.5 to 1 sec. Looks like it helped my note edge. I hope it helped someone.
I'm also having the same issue. Every time I try to tap a button inside a game, it scrolls the window instead of activating the button. Of course this also happens when I tap and hold. The screen registers it as movement and tries to scroll instead of tap and hold.

One Month Review [good not perfect]

Title says it all. I will keep it short and sweet.
Upgraded from an OP8. The Oppo definitely feels heavier in the hand and pocket but can attribute this to the ceramic housing. Feels good in the hand, even with the stock case. I did receive the gift pack which had the Kevlar case and that is lovely but the top, bottom and side buttons are exposed to the elements and that has put me off using and I am continuing with the stock case.
Camera - good. Better than the OP8. Better than a Pixel6 Pro? No, almost as good. I am no camera expert so I don't tinker with all the settings, I am more your regular point and shoot user. I rarely shoot video so can't comment much but again no issue, playback is nice and crisp, sharp smooth quality.
Good battery - charges quick, although I'm not convinced the wireless charger is as fast as it claims i.e. 50W.
User experience - this is where I have some gripes. On the whole it is fine and slick and snappy most of the time but...
1. Sometimes there is a moment of freeze/lag/sticks when I have tried to leave an app or switch to another app- not snappy.
2. When I am listening to YouTube via Bluetooth in the car and somebody calls me, the YT playback continues so I hear both the caller and YT. The caller does not hear the YT playback but can hear me. I have tried the various permission settings but no joy.
3. Screen sometimes wakes up with fingerprint. What I mean here is I can place my thumb on the screen and it signs in. However sometimes I have to double tap the screen to wake it up THEN apply my finger to unlock.
4. Power button - does not power down. Have to use volume up and Power button. Not a biggie but quite annoying.
5. No lockdown mode. I badly want this, but again this works in tandem with the power button.
6. No alert slider like the OnePlus range (which I hear is ditching the alert slider which means they will be using and rebranding Oppo hardware going forward). I usually have my phone on vibrate or silent, very rarely on Loud/ringtones. A helpful XDA user advised me to use the vibrate button to switch between silent and vibrate.
7. I use the Podcast Addict app. The player appears in the banner (pull down) even after I have closed the app. Annoying. This did not happen on the OP8, ever.
Appreciate 6 of the 7 above are software issues and this might be a ColorOS thing and needs tidying up. If anyone has answers to the above that can help me, please do let me know.
I like my phone. Is it significantly better than my OP8? No... better camera but on a day to day, that's it. Again this comes down to what people use their phones for. I am not a gamer so the new SD8.1 will be of use to others.
Thanks all
I trust user reviews more than the mainstream glowing it's great reviews...
All Androids need to be optimized to get the best performance. Workarounds need to be found for issues.
Try modifying the notification settings for Pod Addict. For badly behaving apps I will turn off notifications for them completely... or just take out the trash

Question Change a few settings

Hello all!
My Razer Phone 2 stopped charging. This is how my Razer Phone 1 also died, basically the charging port went bad, then worse, then died completely.
Anyway I got the Nothing instead, since price and specs fit me pretty fine.
However I want to change a few things. I might be blind in the settings menu, but I'm hoping you'll still help me!
I got a few points I'd like changed, and no amount of googling helped me here:
1. The phone turns on the screen when I pick it up. But there are often mistakes, and the screen just turns on by itself when I'm walking with it in my hand, or in my pocket. It has happened already a few times, after having for phone for 48 hours, that I have dismissed some notifications because of this. Can I stop this function all together?
2. I can also press the screen once and the screen will turn on. This is also a problem when the phone is in my pocket. On my Razer I had to double tap and it still turned on sometimes in my pocket. I ran the Razer phone with Nova Launcher, maybe I have to change to this launcher from the Nothing one to get this double tap feature?
3. I can turn off the screen by double tapping on the home screen. That is a feature I always use and appreciate. I never put the phone screen down so the lights on the backside won't get used. I always double tap to turn on the screen, check for notifications, and double tap to turn the screen off should there be no notifications. Nothing phone won't turn off the screen with a double tap unless I actually unlock it, so I can't do a quick check for notifications by double tapping and double tapping again. It won't matter if the phone is on a table, but I frequently check notifications and put the phone back to my pocket, and having to go for the screen button is not exactly for me. Do I need Nova Launcher here?
4. I NEVER use sounds on my phone, except for the alarms. When someone calls me while the screen is turned off, the screen turns off and I get vibration. If the screen is on I won't get any vibration from it, only a visual notification which is easy to overlook if I let it sit with the screen on but locked if I just checked notifications. Also I like the feedback in my hands in case I am doing something on the phone. I already missed some calls because of this. Can it be changed?
5. Is it possible to manipulate the glyph on the backside? I found a "secret" setting which makes them light up to the music playing, but that became pretty annoying just after 5 seconds. Are there some basic things you can do with the light? Like making a custom event and then specify how the light should react? Could be something simple like when a call is active the lights come on very dim? Maybe a 3rd party app someone did?
6. The Razer Phone 2 (and 1) has HUGE speakers in the top and bottom, so I have been living with pretty big bezels. The Nothing has the same size but the phone is almost 100% screen. If I need to go to the bottom and press a back button or something, I cannot reach anymore like on the Razer. Is there a way to add some virtual bezels on Android?
7. I really hate this "notch" or "camera bump". It is a bit of the same as number 6, but can I remove it completely, so the top of the screen where the camera is won't be used at all? The whole line, effectively adding more bezel here too.
I am probably picky, but I have used my phone in a specific way for my whole life, and I am not really good with changes. Also I think a phone should adapt to my needs, and I shouldn't adapt to it.
Thanks for reading and hopefully helping
To be honest, sounds like the Nothing Phone isn't the right device for you.
I like to know the answer to question 1 too.

1. There is an option to turn this feature off under Display->Lock Screen called Lift to show lock screen.
2. Don't know, but you should try using the Nova Launcher.
3. Don't know, but you should try using the Nova Launcher.
4. Very niche use case, you can try to search some root methods.
5. There is root app which can control the light you can try that.
6. and 7. There should be some root apps or magisk modules which allows to do that.
To 2: (I dont know if this works on NothingOS since im on Paranoid Android. But both are very near to stock, maybe it works for you or for others.) I disabled that tap to activate setting and am using fingerprint while screen is off. This can also act as a quick look for notifications, for that i tap where the fingerprint reader is really short so it fails to unlock. This way only the always on display shows up for 3-4 seconds.
Nova wont change anything lockscreen related.
To 5: If you have root, time and like playing around with commands and apps, you can try tasker. Since im on Paranoid Android and the glyphs arent really implemented yet, i made a task that fits my needs perfect.
To your other problems: i think too, the phone should adapt to the user. So i suggest you to wait, i guess there will come roms that are way more customizable.
And maybe a pixel would fit your needings better than this phone because there is a big custom rom scene around.
