Is it time to move on? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is the communities take on the battery and bootloop issue? Is it inevitable that every Nexus 6P will eventually had one of these issues?
My delema is that the LG G6 is on sale for $300, plus a free Google Home at US Cellular. It's the only carrier that gets service at my house. I know the Nexus 6P is by far the more "entertaining" phone, with all the development on it. Unfortunately this deal may be too good to pass up if I'm likely to have issues with the 6P in the future.

Can you post a link to this? I don't see it for 300 bucks anywhere.

Look at the 30 month installment pricing. $10/mo for 30 months is $300. Also shows the Google Home promotion on the page.

That is a really tough call tbh. The screen and camera look great, but I don't have a lot of faith in lg tbh and I would worry about a lack of development, if that is an issue for you.
Nevertheless it looks like a great phone.

Oh. It's after monthly bill credits. So would have to stick with it and service for 30 months... It's basically a contract. You leave early then you pay more than 300.

After reading the forums, people sound really disappointed. I wouldn't do it op

Actually the pricing stays the same no matter what installment you choose. US Cellular also states that early payoff does not incur additional fees, including the day of purchase. Only requirement is that it is activated on a post-paid line at time of purchase.

Just reporting back. I did pick it up. It is straight up $300 plus tax. They put it on an installment plan and you just pay it off right away. Also comes with a Google Home promo from LG and I got a $100 US Cellular giftcard. Still gonna keep the 6P for a month on Fi in case I don't like the LG. Can always sell it.

Let me know what you think after a couple days. It looks great but reviews on the forum made me apprehensive. I'm considering getting a new phone, and it will probably be an s8, though the g6 is a definite contender, and would save me a lot of money if I do decide to get a new one.

So far so good as far as the phone goes. Its really narrow, easy to message on. Going back to the Nexus is difficult ergonomically. The developer landscape is non-existant but it does look like the US Cellular variant probably has an unlocked bootloader. There is already a bounty on TWRP for the TMO variant. Im sure development will pick up once that gets working. Its a popular enough phone.

I've bought my used 6P 3 weeks ago. Battery life was terrible. The only issue. I was having 40-50% of my Nexus 5X life.
After putting a good battery (X-Longer model) in the 6P (last Friday), the phone recovered the original battery life and now I'm having like 25% more battery than my 5X.
So basically I have same battery life I used to have with the Z5 Compact. 4 hours and a full day are guaranteed no matter what you did (gaming....pure chrome browsing of whatever). Maybe 5 hours or 6 if you like to watch videos o too much reading.
I would only upgrade to a Pixel if I wanted a smaller phone. But now that I'm adapting to this phablet...maybe I won't upgrade it before Android P is. released, since it will get O.

It seems like these will all be dead within a couple years but only time will tell for sure. Still, I don't expect mine to last more than a few months once my warranty expires in July.

I think I'm going to try a battery replacement. Accubattery says mine is near full capacity but I still get terrible battery life and bad standby battery drain.

Accubattery isn't very precise, and a badly made battery could still drain quicker

Yes but consider that accubattery was calculating my battery as 2000 mAh / 3450 mAh. And this without considering that the old battery was turning off between 10-25%
That's why in the end I've ended up with more than 120% increase in battery life with the new battery.

Why you think this? Accubattery is really accurate in my experience. I always used that, you can calculate the capacity manually too. And a defective battery is not going to show you more than it can actually hold so if your battery has an high health it's ok and you don't need to change the battery. Anyway the phone is yours and if you want go ahead and open it but the 6p is really difficult to open and a damage could cost you around 20 bucks for the plastic and glass panel.. And finally you could end up installing a worse battery than the one inside

A warning to all those buying a Nexus S (Screen and battery problems)

I thought I'd share some hopefully helpful information with you guys after having to have 2 swap outs of my Nexus S after getting it on launch day.
I had done an awful lot of reading prior to getting my Nexus to make sure I was pretty clued up about any potential launch bugs which seem to plague a number of handsets these days.
The first thing I noticed with my first phone was the unusually fast battery drain and long charge times, I could hardly go through daylight hours without my phone needing charge (Battery indicator showing orange or red). The following night I left the phone with 55% charge and went to sleep. When I woke up the phone was off, strange I thought; turns out it had eaten the rest of the battery over night.
The final straw came when I reset the phone to default settings (thinking it was a rogue app causing the drain) and it still ate the battery within a day. At this point I knew something was up, especially as reviewers were commenting that the battery seemed considerably better than a lot of other Android handsets.
I decided to take it back to Best Buy to get a swap out, long story short the sales rep. tested the battery and told me that it was defective. He then said he would swap out just the handset and battery with another unit, great I thought!
My relief was soon disturbed when I realised something wasn't right with the screen on my new handset. Not only was the screen a pee yellow colour (compared with the cool temperature of the original) there was also significant banding within the grey area of the the pull down notification tray. These problems had also been mentioned on the Engadget review and even if they hadn't I'm pretty sure I still would have noticed it straight away regardless.
After another trip back to Best Buy and a reluctant second swap out on their part, I have what seems like a fully working handset with a good battery and decent AMOLED panel.
I don't know what's happening with Samsung's QC or whether they have large tolerances for their panels, but I would have thought that they would have been able to iron a lot of this out having already launched the Galaxy S series.
A slightly long post but I hope this at least saves some of you the hassle I've been through to get a decent handset. This isn't the first time it's happened either, I had problems with my launch day iPhone 4 with the mic not working.
One thing's for sure, I'm going to be far more vigilant when buying my next handset.
also test ur buttons because they can be loose and the back button sometimes has problems
nothing new for samsung QA
Unfortunately, having come from the epic, this seems par for the course for sammy..I'd high hopes Google would counter this, but I guess not. My first and only ns is wonderful, though I ordered online and it seems the majority of complaints are coming from those that ordered at the store..coincidence?

Sadly, Google != Apple, they don't produce their own hardware. Depending on Samsung, with their known ****ty QA is a risk I'm sure they weighed.
I ordered my NS online and have none off theses issues! Actually my battery life is AWESOME. 16 hours straight between charging. I love it!

3G supported band
Guys,
Some thing out of the topic, but i need to ask is that is there any sort of 3G band limitation in US version of NS? My friend in Canada told me that currently all devices are coming only with AWS support for 3G which is supported by limited number of Cellular Operators.
Any ideas?

Having the same battery problem, please help
I am also having the same battery problem. It seems like the battery drains 1% per minute. I need to keep it charging all the time or it will drain in about 90 minutes. And it takes 8-9 hours to charge it to 100%.
Problem is I can't just take it back to Best Buy since I live overseas and a friend brought it to me from the US. So now what do I do?
1. Is it the battery or the phone? If it is the battery then I can just replace the battery, but I can't find anywhere online to buy the same battery? Any ideas?
2. If it is the phone, is there anything I can do w/o having to send it back to the USA?
Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks but this seller won't ship outside the USA. I found a bunch of similar ones on eBay, but they are all 1440 milliamps and not 1500 milliamps.
Not sure if the one on Amazon is 1440 or 1500.

Should I still get the Nexus 6P (broke my Nexus 6) ?

Hello everyone,
a few days ago I broke my Nexus 6. I am now about to buy a new phone. The Google Pixel L looks really nice but way to expensive.
The Nexus 6P comes next which costs nearly as much (or even less) than a new Nexus 6 would cost. But is the Nexus 6P still worth it?
Battery life seems to be worse than on the Nexus 6, is this correct?
Camera is better than Nexus 6 but worse than Pixel L and other new phones (samsung/iphone) ?
Performance would be more than enough.
Faster decryption than Nexus 6
Feels better in the hand than the Nexus 6
Anything else I should consider?
Thanks in advance !
I upgraded from the N6 to the 6P about a month ago and I couldn't be happier. Camera is better. Battery life is double what it was on the N6, at least for me it is (I'm not arguing over it). Performance is similar. The one thing that makes it an upgrade for me is that the 6P is easier to use on the go, it's not as wide, really makes a difference.
Im in the same boat, need a phone. Only thing that scares me is all the complaints about the 6p battery starting to degrade after long a year ;-/
I recently "upgraded" from a N6 to a 6P, I'd do it again . Similar performance, camera....Not a huge deal to me. battery life isn't as good as my n6, it seems maybe my used 6p has had a rougher battery life than my n6. It gets me through an average days use but no 5.5-6 hours of SOT.
It feels much better in the hand than the n6, the sRGB mode is a winner in for me, finger print scanner is a nice feature. It's also a nexus, unfortunately the last.
I say do it if you can get a good deal.
I was able to pick up a 64gb for under 300 USD!!
Hm thanka for the input. I am not sure if there are any real alternatives for the same price anyway?

I too manage to get my Nexus 6P for under 300, I got mine for 130 and I have to say, it is well worth in getting.
I also am coming from the Nexus 6 as mine has recently broke last month, a day after Thanksgiving. I ended up cracking the screen whilst having the screenprotector on it and you could tell, there is a difference in using the 6P to the 6. With the 6P, it is less wider and feels good in the hand whereas with the 6 it sorta felt like you were holding a brick. The Gorilla Glass 4 which is used on the 6P feels very strong than to the 6's and the screen resolution is amazing. I think if you are able to find a good price on it, it is well worth the money.

The degrading battery issue mentioned below, is false for me - completely. Yes, I get degrading but this is normal for ANY lithium battery on the market. And I have a estimated capacity of 3,223. This is only 6% degrading over a year and a half. Plus you can get the phone for half the price of google, on swappa and various other sites in mint condition.
Side note: I feel the degrading issue is more of a myth caused by the recent battery drain issues of Nougat, and users probably blamed their device rather than the software.
Otherwise, I love this phone. Would absolutely get it again. Hope you come to a decision that satisfies you!

Every phones section on XDA is going to complain about the battery on every phone. There could be a phone with a 10,000 milla amp battery and there would still be people on XDA going
"oh i only got 8hrs of SOT seems pretty low for a phone with a 10k battery"
*update comes out*
"OMG my battery sucks on the new update"
Literally every phone i have owned that XDA section complained about the battery.

Oh yea I understand that but I was more so concerned with something just being wrong with the 6p as in a defect that they didn't tell us about just to sale phones
I'm considering going with the 6P over my Axon 7. I'm really missing the big screen, seemless Verizon compatibility and lots of ROMs. I haven't quite decided yet, but I'm lurking in the 6P forums thinking about it... The Axon isn't bad but the dev community pales in comparison to the 6P.

Lol there is absolutely NO battery issue. There is NO battery issue with Nougat. Everyone here complains that there is a battery issue with nougat just as they did with marshmallow and lollipop and kitkat etc.
I just purchased the N6P to replace my V20. I love it so far. Good battery life and excellent camera.
My only complaint (I'm just waiting for a response on this in the Noob Question thread) is that it's a bit sluggish when using some apps and web browsing. Other that it's a blast to use.

Bought a 128gb N6P on eBay a couple days ago and waiting for it to arrive. Just read about the early shutdown issues with batteries that still have a charge. That's my bad for not looking into the phone a little bit more than I did. I too will be replacing a Motorola N6 that I was planning on selling after but maybe I'll wait and see if this affects the phone that I bought.
Ill be happy to report after I get my N6P in a couple days.
NO! If you haven't heard. They no longer work. Drop at 15 percent battery to nothing. Battery or software problems. Get a OnePlus 3t
I'm on 7.0 and not having any issues with my 6P. Excellent battery life (4.5-5 hrs sot) and perfectly stable performance. I had it with me skiing last sunday in 4 degree F weather and it performed flawlessly as well.
I'm on a 7.1.1 ROM and I can use the phone clear down to 1 percent battery. The shutdown bug isn't universal at all. The 6p is easily my favorite phone yet, FWIW.

That's surprising. I've always found the 6P fast and smooth. Did you purchase a new, used or refurbished phone? Are you running stock Android? If so, which build?
---------- Post added at 12:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:22 AM ----------
The 6P is a bargain now that the Pixel is out but if I had the money I would probably purchase a Pixel instead. There are bugs (random reboots; phone shutdown at 15% battery) that are affecting a small but still significant number of 6P users. If you buy a 6P make sure it has a full warranty.

Is your 6p affected by the early shutdown issue?

Hey all,
I'd like to get a better view on how much 6p's are affected by this issue. I really have no clue what % we're talking about. So.. Is your 6p affected by the early shutdown issue? If not, could you tell us when you've bought your phone and, if you have accubattery installed, the capacity (health) of your battery?
Thanks in advance!
Sure am, and it's died at as high as 45% and as low as 15%. Accubattery pegs the health at about 60% and I've only had the phone about 15 months. Wanted this to be the first one I kept for two years.... Not looking likely with my 2 hours of SOT.

Yeah this is really bad. Fortunately, I've got a new battery in it thanks to warranty. But now I'm really afraid to use the phone. I'm waiting on a response from Google on all this before using my phone again. I've used it after repair for a couple of days to see if the problem was fixed: it was.

It infuriates me because I love the phone and don't want to buy a new one.... But I can't have something that is going to die on me. I'm pretty pissed off with the state of Google hardware in general right now. Both the 5x and 6P are bootlooping and dying for no discernible reason, the Pixel and 6P have battery issues, although the Pixel, so far at least, doesn't seem to have them nearly as widespread. I feel like my phone is a ticking time bomb and that's really, really not cool.
Plus the supply issues with the Pixel all but rule that out as a replacement anyway.
I've owned three of the last four generations of Nexus phones, and while I was elated with the 6P when I got it, that glow has faded significantly. .

Yeah that ticking timebomb feeling is really annoying. I don't even dare to use the phone now it actually works, because I'm afraid that I'll f*ck up my new battery. I'm trying to wait for an official response from Google, but it's hard. I really want to know if some software f*ckup is causing these batteries to degrade faster.
I had the issue also. I bought mine in October 2015. Accubattery was showing the battery at 60% and was shutting down at random once it got below 40%. Google sent me a refurbished phone even though it was out of warranty. So far this one hasn't shut down early and accubattery shows 95%.
I got my phone mid February (Best Buy) last year and do not have the problem. Accubattery shows my battery health at 93% (3220mah). But I also protect my battery as much as possible with when to charge and never let my phone stay plugged in when topped off either.
Never had early shutdown. Had my 6p for a few months. Accubattery shows 99%.

I had the issue also. I bought mine in October 2015. Accubattery was showing the battery at 60% and was shutting down at random once it got below 40%. Google sent me a refurbished phone even though it was out of warranty. So far this one hasn't shut down early and accubattery shows 95%.

Does the battery life itself seem to be better as well? Part of my problem is that with the screen on I'm looking at an obscene drain. According to accubattery my average drain with screen on is 1100ma/h. Hell it dropped two percent in the time it took me to type this.

Yeah the battery life is a lot better. I was doing good to get 2 hours SOT on my old phone. Same setup on this one is getting 4 to 4.5 hours SOT. I don't recall what my average drain was before but now it's about 450 ma/h. Here is a screenshot.

I may have to give that a shot then. Buying a new one really isn't in the budget right now. Did you flash back to stock or relock the bootloader before you sent it in?
Never had early shutdown, and have had my 6P since launch.... Mostly custom AOSP roms....

I'm not sure it was necessary but I flashed back to stock and relocked bootloader. I didn't want to take any chances especially since they were replacing it out of warranty. Worst case I could have used Nexus protect either way. They tried to get me to do that when I called. I refused and once I mentioned the Reddit thread they agreed to replace. Saved me the $79.00 deductible.
Nope
:good::good:We have two in our family and neither one is affected. One was purchased Late 2015 and another early 2016. Both show over 95% capacity in Accubattery (mine is 97%) and I can run the battery down to 1%. Both are stock 7.1.1 one is unlocked and rooted, and the other has never been unlocked. Although I could not vote for each phone, it will be interesting to check poll results a few months down the road.

Google's official position is that the early shutdown problem and boot loop of death are both hardware issues. People are experiencing both problems on stock Marshmallow and Nougat as well as on custom ROMs.

Guess I'm making a call tomorrow then. Hope this straightens things up. Thanks!
Just as an update, I got my RMA last week and it has behaved flawlessly since. Accubattery is actually reporting 101% battery health, and It's taking a little getting used to having a phone that the battery doesn't die in two hours.
affected
Lulzmaster said:
Sure am, and it's died at as high as 45% and as low as 15%. Accubattery pegs the health at about 60% and I've only had the phone about 15 months. Wanted this to be the first one I kept for two years.... Not looking likely with my 2 hours of SOT.

Same story.. getting a new battery install totally solves this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fCDOfljoQY
It's annoying not to be able to easily swap in a new battery but manufacturers could prefer people feel desperate for a yearly upgrade: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/nexus-6p-battery-replacement-options-t3628932

I haven't had an issue since I got my RMAd device, so yeah. I even have all the same apps installed and everything and I'm still getting ten hours of mixed usage. Performance is getting a little pokey but the phone is coming up two years old soooooooooooo I'm not surprised.

battery degrade

Hi
I currently have the 6p, but notice the battery start to degrade fast... Only 2 hours of sot total.
Should I replace the battery?.. Huawei quotes me 50$usd for the repair... But since the phone is already 1.5yrs, I worry that if I replace the battery and other components inside the phone start to fail, which add total fixing cost
Anyone had the same experience????
Anyone
I just got an "oem" battery off ebay for 13 bucks and put it in myself and i went from 72% capacity on the original battery to 101% on the new one. Night and day with on screen time. Just do it yourself dude its pretty easy and 20 videos on YouTube of how to do it.

https://www.ubreakifix.com/locations had quoted me $90 with quick turnaround (possibly same day with 90 day warranty), how long did Huawei tell you it would take & where would you have to mail it ($50+postage)?
Your fingerprint reader always works flawlessly & how often do you reboot?

Battery replacement for $50 - $90 is worth it to me since it's still a solid device with front facing stereo speakers, something else out there have your attention?
People are reporting the battery replacement as very helpful: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/6p-affected-bij-shutdown-issue-t3547266/page3
Does the $50 include postage (& did Huawei ask you to reset the device or for your password)?

Sometime, gadget becomes obsolete overtime.
Lets say I done the battery, and later an other components become defective, more Money to pay for repair.
And also, one problem I notice is that the ram use is near 95% on a one day basis. As apps become more.ram intensive, the 6p may not able to handle task later isn't?

Batteries have a very limited life cycle which is why I prefer user-replaceable batteries but the Nexus 6P isn't otherwise obsolete beyond its original battery & will reportedly get Android O+security updates to at least Sept 2018. If other components do become defective beyond the expected battery you don't have to invest further but my Samsung Note 4 with user replaceable battery still works fine at over 2.5 years, it's just not the best anymore.
Yes more RAM is helpful especially if you like to keep many active apps going simultaneously but many Android devices out there still have 3GB RAM or less so the 6P's RAM won't make it obsolete soon. OnePlus 5 with 6-8GB RAM is an option if you don't mind not having user replaceable battery nor expandable storage but I'm also considering the LG V20 which can be had <$400 in the US now https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/help/lg-v20-worth-getting-2017-model-t3630476. I have an open mind about new devices especially after they've been thoroughly reviewed but my Nexus 6P battery experience does have me questioning the wisdom of enclosed batteries when battery degradation can be experienced so quickly.
Are you in the US?

I used to live in US, but now in HK.
Replaceable battery smartphones are good old days, just forget about them lol.
Android updates is always nice, but since the phone battery degrade (not even two years), i wonder whats the really use of the updates. Also, i do notice al google phone had problems after one year since the update, i wonder google did it on purpose or not. if i had the newest update patch update but the phone is malfunction, then what the point right?
my wife had a lg g4 for more then 2 years, and the battery for that phone is still great (doesnt look like and degreation to me at all).
I had been using nexus ssince galaxy, nexus 5 and 6p now. To me, they dont last very long compare to other phone (2 years for all my previous phone).
I think i will get a cheaper phone (oneplus or mi) as i want to be open about other brands phone as well.
nexus or pixel are nice phone, but they tend not to last very long.
I think I will save the 50$-100$ repair $ for the new phone, just wait for the battery to bludge and call it certified.

Google likely doesn't push problematic updates purposely but Android is fragmented. I would however like to see stock Android offer easy OS rollbacks like how Windows updates does when they cause issues..
Device manufacturers however have a profit motive it seems for frequent upgrades even if it's not best for the environment. High end models especially shouldn't be so disposable so I find the disappearance of user-replaceable batteries-storage somewhat shameful but is the trend lately where fashion (thanks Apple) can be more profitable than functionality.
LG G4 has a removable battery according to http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_g4-6901.php , Hong Kong should offer you no shortage of cost efficient options, let us know what you decide to do here..

Don't mean to sound like another pushy American but why drag it out? I assume you find 2 hr SOT unacceptable so why not just resolve it with a battery replacement for your quoted $50 (or even <$100) or use-buy another capable device with acceptable SOT?
Even when I get another device on top of my others, I'll not just toss an otherwise functional Nexus 6P in the trash when a battery replacement for <$100 could bring it back to a reasonable SOT life but I hear you if you don't think it's worth that for you or don't want to risk replacing it yourself but 2 hr SOT deserves to be resolved..

You seem to have pretty much made up your mind. You could save a $100 OR pay around $15 before you're ready to move on, give the diy battery replacement a shot and sell the phone for significantly more than $100. If the battery is solid youll likely find a buyer at a minimum$200.
And if you fail... you're out $15 bucks. Not a huge deal.

i just personally think phones are design to last around 2 years (some can go three, but rarely.)
the reason i dont repair the phone are
1st: other components may fail in the future, eg charging port
2nd: ram usage may not be enough. I have already reached 85% on 3 hour usage... as apps are more ram hungry, the phone probably get run slow soon.
3rd: some cheap flagship phone are just 300$ price range, quite cheap
4th: i did had a bad experience on previous nexus 5. i took the phone to a repair shop... but seem the shop installed me a knock off battery, the battery die after 3 months of repair. and i knew huawei didnt put the battery to the market.. i wonder how those shop people get the official battery for u to install? or they are fake at the beginning?

I was just saying you shouldn't have to put up with a 2 hr SOT for a primary flagship (yes such primary devices are typically designed to remain a primary 1-2 yrs max), if it will be a secondary used primarily at home that's another story but I wouldn't just assume other components will fail. Android manages ram, 85%-95% of 3GB RAM could still be efficient use of available RAM unless everything gets sluggish but you could always reboot. There are other cheap powerful devices now you could consider. I don't think any place will warranty an installed battery's performance for more than 3 months but hopefully it won't get as bad as fast as the initial battery but might depending on charge cycles. This whole discussion would be far easier if consumers could just pop a $ 10 battery themselves in under a minute but manufacturers don't seem to care to offer that anymore..

For 11k its a no brainer. You won't get a better phone that balances performance, battery and camera better for the price.
However, if you can shell out 2k more, Mi A1 will be a much better choice solely because software updates are going to be better there. Motorola has become **** with updates.
The A1 goes on sale tomorrow. Plz wait. It would receive more updates than our device.

Absolutely worth it.
With EX kernel overclocked and AOSPEx I usually break 12 hours screen on time before I'm at 20% low battery warning. I've never had a phone with battery life this incredible.
Here's an anecdotal example: at 9:30PM (2100) on 11/16 I had severe chest pains and called 911. My phone was at 70% when they took me to the hospital. It wasn't until around 12:30am (0030) on 11/17 before they figured out it wasn't my heart so this was the next time I was able to use my phone because I wasn't having tests run or needles jammed in me. I made a bunch of calls and sent texts to family members to inform them. I didn't see a doctor until 2:00am (0200) so to keep myself occupied and not thinking about the pain, I watched Netflix. Afterwards, I had a 4 hour radioactive dye imagining test where I had to lie perfectly still so I didn't get to use my phone again until probably around 10:00am (1000) when they told me it was my gallbladder and I'd need surgery. All of the operating rooms were booked for the day so my surgery wasn't scheduled until 10:30am (1030) on 11/18, so I spent the next 24 hours sleeping and watching YouTube/Netflix. On 11/18 I didn't do much but sleep, aside from making two 20 minute phone calls so the phone was idle most of the day. On 11/19 I used it pretty heavily until I was discharged around 2:00pm (1400), at which point it was at 4%.
That weekend in hospital left me feeling impressed by this phone more than any other phone ever has. It's literally the best budget phone on the market IMO, and VERY underrated.
