Activating - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

So i purchased the 8 using Samsung finance. My question is. What if I give the 8+ to someone else. Can it be activated with that person's account ?

Are you actually selling it for a profit? I dont see how anyone could profit when its so easy to order it. Walmart has them 100 cheaper but its locked to crappy straight talk

What carrier version did you buy?
The best part of GSM phones and GSM carriers is you stick the sim in any compatible unlocked phone and it works. Thats why I have never had to activate a phone with Samsung or T-Mobile or AT&T.
CDMA is different and just one of many reasons I don't use those 2 providers Verizon and Sprint.
Thats why I don't like the vaguely written $100 non activation fee in relation to a T-Mobile purchase. My T-Mobile sim is activated I have no need to activate any T-Mobile compatible phone I put my SIM in.

Thanks for your reply, What is "apn"?
How to change "apn"?
Thanks!

I just gotten off the phone with a Straight Talk rep and she said that there sim cards wouldnt work in verizons phones.....and she also said that T-Mobile wouldnt work. I also went to ST web page and checked to see if my phone was compatable by looking at a list of devices on the b.y.o.b my SM-N900V wasnt on the list however it gave me the option of entering my MEID # and it said it was compatable. Just a little confused....does it work or not.

I don't have experience with ST but with band 4 enabled I was able to put a buddy's T mobile sim card in and get voice and LTE data after configuring T mobiles APN.

So, with a new straight talk at&t sim card in a verizon galaxy note 3, why would I be getting a "non-verizon sim card" error and no service?

What's so funny? Am I missing something? As I understand it, all verizon note 3's are unlocked... here's what I'm basing this off of: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2480320
wanted to know this too!!
before i left for vacation (here in the PHILIPPINES) i tried using a T-MOBILE simcard on my NOTE3. it worked perfectly OK. thought its unlocked for any GSM network.
when i got here (PHILIPPINES), immediately put in a local simcard and it says "NON-VERIZON SIM" and cant get any signal.
tried all three major phone networks simcards and they all dont work.
can anybody please let us know what is the workaround to this issue?
any help is greatly appreciated!!! c",)

Ah, fair enough. The intention wasn't to do this - the verizon note 3 is from ebay and came factory unlocked. I was planning to use it on verizon till I learned their $60/$70 prepaid plans don't support 4G devices
So, found straight talk, checked this phone's IMEI in their system and it said it'd work... but it's not. There's a lot of confusion out there.. people in this thread saying it "just works" on tmobile and at&t, some saying that it "just works" on straight talk (even mentioning that they're using the at&t compatible sim), but so far, no luck for me.
Here are the confusing points:
1) The verizon note 3 comes factory unlocked. If this is true, why do links like the one you just sent me even exist?
2) The straight talk bring your own device kit from walmart ($60, includes one month of $45 unlimited everything) comes with 5 separate activation options:
- AT&T-compatible full-sized sim
- AT&T-compatible micro sim
- Tmobile-compatible full-sized sim
- Tmobile-compatible micro sim
- CDMA scratch-off network access number
The AT&T ones say "4G LTE available", T-mobile ones say "4G HSPA+ Available", and the CDMA one doesn't mention anything about 3 or 4g, so naturally I thought I should try the AT&T one first. I activated this sim card on straight talk, ported my number, once that was complete I put it in the note 3 and booted up - and I have no service, "emergency calls only", and "non-verizon sim". Just to be certain the phone is unlocked, I tried a completely different, genuine t-mobile sim in the same phone and it worked fine.. it still says "non-verizon sim" but I have service and can make calls.
Really hoping someone can shed some light on what might be happening here.

Aha, thankfully my problem was a simple one - I called straight talk and had them check the status of the sim card I was trying to use (the micro at&t compatible one) - turns out, it still wasn't activated. SO - they activated it right then and there and everything started working immediately on the phone, too - started right up with the same 4G service my tmobile phone gets in our neighborhood.
SO - in case any one else stumbles upon this, YES, you can use a VERIZON galaxy note 3 with the straight talk AT&T-compatible sim card with the factory stock verizon ROM and no further unlocking. What a crazy world we live in
I have a Verizon note 3 running on T-Mobile. I bought a prepaid plan starter kit at Walmart. It came with the sim and the first month service for $42. Any T-Mobile sim will work. All I did was pull my Verizon sim out and replace it with the T-Mobile sim. Changed the apn settings and it works great! I had to root and other stuff to enable band 4, but you won't have to. The latest update enabled it.

The vzw Note 3 on T-Mobile gets full 4G lte AND hspa+ 21 mbps (on areas reformed to 1900mhz pcs band, not on their original AWS band 4 1700/2100 mhz hspa+ 42 mbps).

I work several blocks from downtown Pittsburgh and I live 15 miles outside of Pittsburgh. Both places I get ~80dBm and 100dBm signal with 20mb - 35mb down, and 10 to 20 up. I'm only on hspa occasionally, but speeds are fast. Their edge network is painful. I'm not on it often in the area but when I am I get ~.15mb - .20mb downloads. I would try to find someone in your area that has T-mobile and see what kind of service they get before switching.

Ok. After spending many trips and waiting many hours for the guy at a local shop that flashes phones and sells prepaid services.....I have resorted to trying to do some reading and figure out how to do it myself or at least get some info so I don't waste any more money. I have a galaxy s4 on AT&T prepaid and pay 50 per month for unlimited with working hot spot. All good but wanted to get a Note 3. Is it possible to get a Note 3 to work like my s4??
Sorry if I posted in the wrong section. I just need to know which note 3 to buy and if it will work. I will keep reading and searching but wanted a little direction.
Thanks for any help
Sure CUZ... just remember Verizon is CMDA and AT&T is GSM they are both bootloader locked and will need safestrap work-a-round!

Straight Talk Verizon Note 3 activation
I have a VZW Note 3, after contacting Straight Talk's *(microchasm) support I am told by a human that the IMEI# of the phone is not compatable with their "bring your own phone" system. I have the micro sim card in the phone, I think I just need them to turn it on... Sorry if I am over simplifying things, at this point I am completely irate. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The previous arrangement with VZW was a concession line that was canceled.

T-Mobile Nexus 6 works on all carriers CONFIRMED

Hey guys,
I just purchased a nexus 6 from t-mobile and popped in a sim from att, sprint, and Verizon. I can confirm all 3 worked flawlessly with no problems.
At the device start up, i did skip the part where it tried to activate on the network the sim was from.

Unless something has changed with CDMA technology, the Verizon phones shouldn't be able to use data while on an active call. I know they are working to get that working with some new LTE standard but I haven't heard anything about it being here yet.

I'm considering switching to TMo anyway, so I picked up 30 days of pre-paid with the phone for 45$. I plan to try both carriers on my commute, see how signal is on both carriers on the train ride, downtown at work, etc. before making up my mind, and this device makes it as easy as swapping the SIM out!
The issue I had, was I didn't have a nano-SIM. Verizon rep at the store told me there was nothing they could do... I told them if he got me a nano-SIM, that customer support could active it... He gave me a SIM and let me use their phone to call Support to activate it. The support person did a "SIM swap" for my existing device, even though my Note3 obviously doesn't use a nano-SIM.. but that's all it took to activate the nano-SIM, and it works perfectly.
I may be misunderstanding your question... I believe the confusion is that you don't actually activate the phone... you activate the SIM IN the device. You should be able to take the phone out of the box, and drop in an already activated SIM and all will work fine...

Lol. Yea that's what I was worried about. I didn't want to buy it then down the road oh yea this I.d. doesn't work anymore.
I did not register my device on T-Mobile at all. Just popped the other sims in.
What I'm told is that carriers only care about imei when activating for the first time. If you just put your own sim in there they just can't see the device type which really doesn't matter unless you're looking to call them for support.
T mobile store gave me **** about buying the phone out right. I had to get a friend to add me as an authorized user on his account to buy the phone OUTRIGHT. So stupid...
Also, at T-Mobile the phone out right was 649 where everyone else is like 50 or 40 bucks more which was also sweet.
I also did not get bloat Ware on the phone from the carriers.
The devices CDMA identifier (MEID??) needs to be in the carriers whitelist so if the OP didn't place a voice call over either the Sprint or Verizon networks itnis not "safe" to to say it works on all carriers.
This is supposed to be one model for all of the US with 4 SKUs for the variations, and it should work but there is still the question of whether the CDMA carrier. Allows the phone on their network.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
I can confirm I've activated my nexus bought directly from moto on both sprint and T-Mobile. Both voice and data worked with each carrier. Sprint takes a little more when than just putting the Sim in. They need to activate the MEID in their system. You can't just put an active Sim from another phone in and have it work.
Interesting..
Other users have reported the exact opposite.

Buying from T-Mo living in a non-T-Mo area
Yes. I must be one of the only people on here in the U.S. not living in a T-Mo area.
I just ordered from T-Mo (64GB MB). After much conversation and clarification, I've learned that one can buy a Nexus 6 from them outright, which requires also buying a $10 SIM activation kit. Since I do not live in a T-Mo area, I will have to call and cancel my 'yet-to-be-activated' plan, which also required a $50 deposit. By utilizing T-Mo's "buyer's remorse", I will be able to keep the phone, since I bought it outright, but will be refunded my $50 deposit for the service, without ever having to activate it on T-Mo's network. From there, I will pop in my AT&T SIM card, and be on my way! The only thing I'll be out is the $10 SIM activation kit.
Also, the rep's did acknowledge that the Nexus 6 is one of the few phones they have that are already unlocked.
Please do critique this if you foresee any problems I'll have popping in my AT&T SIM and using my existing service with them.
EDIT: Yargh. T-Mo had zero 64GB phones, and have since called me back to tell me they are on back order. But hey... at least I have an order in now. Beats what I've accomplished so far on the Play store all to hell.

This is incorrect, it has been working for 3 years now. Data while on a phone call has been working since LTE came out. It worked on my Note 2, Note 3, and currently works on my Galaxy S5. Also works on my families HTC M7 and M8.
However, it no longer works on the Droid Turbo, and now I believe the N6.
But the original assumption was incorrect, data + voice has been working for years. They did something now that it is not working on new devices coming out.

There's an app in the Google Play Store that will unlock your T-mobile phone from the T-Mobile unlock app. I used it for my S7 Edge. Paid $28 & in an hr I was permanent unlocked. The app is IMEI Unlocker
On the original Jump 1.0 on a business account and have been able to SIM unlock all my phones on payment plans the min I left the store. Have had every Galaxy release except for the Note 7 and they all were SIM unlockable. My S7 Edge didn't SIM Unlock on day 1 though. Waited a day or two and was able to SIM Unlock it, just randomly tried it. My S8 I have not been able to SIM unlock it yet, but this is the first time I pre-ordered online and haven't sent in my S7 Edge back yet.

All the versions (T-mobile, AT&T or Verizon) are SM-G950U, you can see this on Samsung Page, the only differences are the latest letter where they change for each version. Because of this there were people guessing that it was exactly the same phone with different software, which you should be able to change as you decide wit any other company software and activate all the bands. Like I mentioned only a gossip base on the model SM-G950U

As soon as I received it I inserted my sim card and the only thing i noticed was the cell phone showing a message that phone wouldnt be usable until properly activated, I ignored it and continue and my sim worked normally i was able to make phone calls, use LTE data..... something to consider is that when i reboot the cell phone i dont get this msg anymore but just a notification over my notification bar from the verizon config wizard saying that my sim is not from verizon but as soon as i close it it doesnt came back until you reboot again. The only complain is that i just found out that I cannot update the firmware through OTA because it seems to try to use the verizon servers and are not able to validate my phone because it was never activated on Verizon. So i guess i have to wait for the firmwares or updates to be available on Samsung and install them using ODIN.

There's an app in the Google Play Store that will unlock your T-mobile phone from the T-Mobile unlock app. I used it for my S7 Edge. Paid $28 & in an hr I was permanent unlocked. The app is IMEI Unlocker

Should have checked, just paid 75 dollars for unlockriver
If I flash the Verizon firmware to a sprint S8 phone could I use it on AT&T?

I used the same but it asked me to pay $55, I don't know how you got it for just $28. Maybe they increased price

Do you have any updates with your order. imei-unlocker.com had to cancel my order because there were delays and no ETA at the moment. I wonder if unlockriver are successfully doing it.

How I unlocked my TMobile OnePlus 6T

I called Customer service and told them I bought the phone cash from T-Mobile store and it doesn't make sense to put me on a 40 day hold to unlock, I own the phone outright. I asked was there any way to override the 40 day policy because I travel and sure enough she bypassed the policy and told me I will have to do a factory reset. I factory reset and open the unlock app and tap the permanent unlock option and boom it unlocked and the app disappeared.

Yeah it doesn't even make to put us on a 40 day hold if we own the phone
Now if we can get you guys to unlock bootloader and then try to flash the international stock rom from OnePlus and see if it "unlocks" the second simcard imei
Can't you get the token to unlock bootloader (from oneplus) after the unlock the SIM?
Mine doesn't arrive till Monday..

You can't "unlock" an IMEI it doesn't have one and the phone can't just create one

There ya go,good point. :good: (Admittedly,I didn't consider that either,THX for bringing it up).
If there is no "buried" IMEI (doubtful,at best),even if the hardware is there (less the SIM Card holder for T-Mobile models),it's not just gonna magically generate one.
Before anyone gets the idea of "putting" an existing one on there (if even possible) that discussion is off limits here @ XDA.................
I'm guessing that the special modem for TMobile variants is disabling the second SIM slot or the variant simply is different hardware then.

If u have the right tools u may be able to write an imei to the efs partition however that would be highly illegal..I don't hold out much hope that the tmo variant is dual SIM.. as OnePlus has stated that tmo specifically chose a different variant sadly..I will be happy with unlocked bl and custom roms tho after this first month..when I need dual SIM I'll just use my XS Max.

From what I saw from T-Mobile on Twitter is their backened doesn't support dual SIM phones. Not that you can use an unlocked dual SIM phone on their Network they just can't sell them directly

That sounds more like a "won't" than a can't.
TBH,I've heard that term (backend) used a few times recently & have no idea what it really means in this context, other than just what it sounds like, they won't sell it.
I bet it's just a canned response w/no real reason other than T-Mobile & the other carriers would rather sell us two single-SIM phones vs one dual-SIM phone.
I tried and they said I couldn't until the buyer remorse period is over.
Edit -
Contacted Tmo via Twitter and they did it no problems!
Apple is having a hard time getting carriers to support dual SIM capability and this will be more difficult after the merger as control of the wireless market will be further concentrated. They are easily the most influential supporters of dual SIM capabilities in the States, lets hope they maintain that support and are joined by others that could benefit from taking back some control of the wireless market because it helps check abuses by our wireless oligopoly. Folks will do what they want but I'd carefully consider buying the Tmo version if dual SIM was something I wanted. Burned myself thinking something would come that never did more than once. I do think it's a good possibility but I use dual SIM now so wasn't taking a chance.

T-Mobile DIGITS helps, but, it's not exactly the same. (Still only one SIM for data).
Otherwise, I'd stayed away. Been using Dual SIM phones more often than not over the past five years, since I left Sprint for T-Mobile (the sheer variety of BYOD/Dual SIM was the main reason, let alone better service).

Some reps will do with no problem and other Reps make it seem as if the 40 day policy is mandatory. Just gotta keep trying till you get the Rep who doesn't give a **** lol

Still sounds like they're making it out to be more expensive/labor intensive than it actually is.
If BYOD Dual-SIM phones can operate on their networks,it would stand to reason it would take little to no effort for the carriers to sell dual SIM models.
Not being disagreeable,my beef is w/the US carriers,it's nonsense.

Yes dual SIM devices work because TMobile sees it as 1 IMEI for each line. But if they sell a dual SIM phone then they have two IMEI numbers per phone in thier system. I'm guessing the iPhone works a bit different since one is virtual

ESim on verizon

Has anyone been able to use an ESim with Verizon? I can't seem to get it working, I called Verizon twice, was told it will work once (but they couldn't get it to) was told it won't work the next time, and pixel support said it might work in a couple months. Just wondering if anyone else has had any luck or more definitive answers. Thanks

eSim does not work on Verizon unless you have an iPhone. Do the Verizon branded P4s even have an eSim available for any carrier activation? Up until now they didn't. Verizon disables eSim on their phones up to and including the 3a.
Yes the Verizon P4 esim is available and not deactivated. I have not tried it yet but was planning on going into a store to see. ?

I'd be really curious to know what you found out.
I have an unlocked P4 and was a no go. It's more on VZW end until they allow it now. Bummer?
Edit.. hmm @bono81310 Anyway good try.. Verizon doesn't care and they won't do a thing about it. Apple demanded it or they couldn't sell their phones. Yeah I know it's frustrating.
Well I solved my issue this morning by porting my Verizon over to fi. It's funny that they will sell the phone even though they don't fully support it, but I've been burned by them in the past via the locked down phones they sell.

Can't blame you for that. I have Fi too and it's a pretty good service. I need it for my business line. Where did you buy the device, just curious?

I got it from Google, got my pixel 2 from Verizon when I was in a bind and learned it was locked down the hard way....
So if I purchased an unlocked p4, can I use fi esim and vz sim together?

Yes.
I'm currently not In a "supported" country.
"Tap the + icon next to Mobile network."
The plus icon is not present.
Is this something the carrier has to support?
My carrier supports Apple iPhone esims.
Constructively speaking would I have to approach my carrier to get this to work?

I bought a Verizon bad esn Pixel 3 XL off ebay and i was able to use it overseas (outside usa) on GSM network without problems.
If I buy a Verizon Pixel 4 with bad esn, will it be same or it will be locked to Verizon?
If no, anyone know how much unlock will cost?

I don't troll. Answers to what? If you have a bad esn? Stop playing games.
Can't post the URL, I guess ?.... But last month, Verizon AT&T and GSMA agreed to end the eSim restrictions to avoid a class action lawsuit..
https://www.phonearena.com/news/DOJ...to-collusion-by-Verizon-ATT-and-GSMA_id120753
..
Will this agreement force Verizon to unlock the eSim feature on our phones?
I tested T-Mobile network using network pass. Esim worked fine, however since that I've had issues with my phone dropping service unless I'm sitting still in the center of town. Prolly unrelated but who knows yet.
