Yes, you can root your HTC U play easily. Follow the following steps to root your HTC u play. btw I try this method on my HTC u play its work very well.
1) Unlock your phone from HTC website Bootloader. follow this video :
Link for unlock phone bootloader : https://www.htcdev.com/bootloader

Click to collapse
If you have done the bootloader unlock, let's move on next step.
2) Install " TWRP recovery" in your HTC u play, btw its not official but you can use it. " DOWNLOAD " it should be twrp-3.1.1-0. Click here to see following steps

Step no 3 my favorite step, How to root phone ?
3) We will root htc u play with the help of Magisk . just download the Magisk.apk and Go in file manager, if you don't have file manager simply download from playstore just typing "FX File". anyways Find the Magisk.apk file in file manager and change the extension .apk to .zip file format. if you done it . boot your phone in twrp recovery and click on "install" select the Magisk.zip file in your downloads folder and install it. and reboot your phone.

Done you have successfully install root in your device. you can check it with the help of root checker.
NOTE : SOME USERS ARE EXPERIENCING BOOTLOOP AFTER OTA UPDATING WITH TWRP.
Thanks.

How can I do it? any tutorial?
this is how I root my galaxy y
goto recovery
flash this cwm zip - download here
mount system if not already mounted (in mounts and storage it should display "unmount system" if system is mounted)
install zip from sd
select this zip download Valkyrie_1_5E
select superuser by chainsdd
restart
you should now have the superuser app and your phone rooted
if it cant find your build.prop you have a varient of the 5360 that cant use this method

Look for stock firmware bundled with the bootloader for your device then flash through odin.. But Im warning you its a risky move you could brick your device.. So i suggest you do a little more research before doing anything dangerous goodluck

flashing stock firmware does not unlock the phone!
and you dont unlock the bootloader like you do a htc phone - the zips contains the bootunlock file when you flash them in galaxy y
never flash the boot loader in odin - you will be at high risk of damaging your phone if you get it wrong
use dokys glaxy toolbox to remove carrier lock

I just flash a stock via odin, and now it's okay.. I tried again root, start recovery, flash cwm, mount system (that was already monted), flash zip file that you gave to me, follow aroma instructions, chose the first option by chainsdd, and reboot..
The superuser app don't appear.. and root checker says that root is not done...
What can I do..I'm freaking out with this, I had 2 androids before (Htc Wildfire, Samsung galaxy gio) and it never was so simple to root them!!

try this method
enable usb debugging on your phone - (phone settings - applications - development - tick usb debugging)
download this zip and put on root of sd card

now go into recovery (stock recovery not cwm)
install zip from sd card

Hey guys, it does work! With some tweaking. Its maybe like a 4 click method. I used the z1c method. Uninstall the APK from your phone and follow the directions on this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53459243
Take the APK file that is not installed and move it over to your pc. The file you extract will have a folder called files, put the TR.APK file there. Make sure towelroot is not installed on your phone before you do this.
Now all you have to do is run the install.bat file and follow directions. Do not press your keyboard till your phone screen is black and you seen the sony logo.
It does work, and I'm so happy!
Doesn't work on z1s.

Once you have root, install a recovery and flash a SuperSU.zip
Then goto options in recovery and choose to check/fix root on system reboot

Updating the binary from the play store app is awkward. I also flash the .zip then choose to fix the root in recovery. That then allows it to be updated.

As indicated in the original Towelroot thread, the SuperSU from Play Store hasn't been updated yet and may not work well with Towelroot. You need the latest version from ChainFire's website http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
ok so just to clarify
you need to install the apk using PC connected to phone using adb - is that correct

Just looking for someone to point me in the right direction

So I decided to root my phone ...I used the latest Windroid toolkit ..now I was able to unlock the boot loader and install/flash TWRP. here is my issue when I click on the Flash SuperSU button I get this error "wrong device state ! please ensure that your device is in Android! any help on how to finish flashing it would be appreciated.
Windroid toolkit 3.1.0
Thanks
My best guess is that you're trying to root it from fastboot. Load it into recovery instead. If that doesn't work, change direction and figure out how to flash a stock Rom with root pre-installed or check chainfire for his rooting utilities.

Point you in the right direction? Don't use a toolkit...
Rooting is simple on Moto devices:
1) Unlock bootloader
2) Flash TWRP
3) In TWRP, go to Advanced - Terminal
4) Enter "echo SYSTEMLESS=true>>/data/.supersu"
5) Flash latest SuperSU in TWRP+
6) Reboot and enjoy the rooty goodness
That's it.

You should download the original ROM of your phone and then rename the file AP_A205xxxxxxxx.md5 to AP_A205xxxxxxxx.rar and extract it. Copy boot.img.lz4 file to your android phone. Use the app ZArchiver to Extract file boot.img.lz4. output boot.img file. then use Magisk manerger patch to create the patched boot.img file
I think downloading the original ROM only takes about 20 minutes. If the root error occurs, use it to reload the phone firmware.
