PS: 3900mah battery. Not 4000. I'm wondering why they said 4000.

The lower number is the minimum guaranteed and the bigger number is the typical.
Most of the time this is explained on the battery with both numbers shown.

[EXPERIMENT] S4 Overheating and how it affects battery drainage [PLEASE PARTICIPATE]

Dear Community,
In this thread I want to gather a sample to investigate to what extent the S4 suffers form overheating and how this affects the battery drainage/life. I urge you to participate as I am collecting a sample to submit a formal complaint to Samsung to raise awareness to an issue that is widespread among S4 users and to push Samsung to address this issue accordingly. In order to provide your sample please follow the instructions below and report back in this thread with the relevant information. Please first indicate which variant you have: Quad/Octa (i9505 or i9500)
Please download BatteryGraph (it's a great app to measure Battery drainage accurately) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.modroid.battery
Run it once after download to initiate logging. Let it run for 10 minutes to allow the graph to built up a bit.
Then please Download Antutu benchmark run the benchmark fully exactly 5 times back to back (continuously). After that please enter the stock dialer (as quickly as possible) and enter *#0228# and post the temperature (external thermistor) after the tests in order to determine the maximum temp that the device reaches under continuous stress.
After that, please enter the app Battery Graph and zoom into the graph to the maximum level. Scroll slowly along the curve at the time when you performed the Benchmarks and tell me if there are interruptions or 'skips' where the battery drops 1 or 2 percent at a time and where the App does not Register a graph for those drops. Sequence/scroll slowly along the graph 1% at a time and make sure that the battery dropped 1% at a time. Please report of the battery has dropped more than 1% at a time. Please make a screenshot of your battery graph in the App and post it here for collection. I will analyze the graphs subsequently and compile it in SPSS to submit our findings.
If there is a drop of 2 or 3% at a time it means that you are experiencing Battery Percentage skips/cliffs which could indicate either a defective battery or defective device which might be the cause for the extensive heat development.
Thank you for your participation. Hopefully Samsung will listen to us and address the issue to give us the perfect S4 that we deserve.

That battery app polls for battery level changes every 5 minutes by default. I think almost every device will experience a drop of more than 1% every 5 minutes under constant stress testing. You can change it to poll every 1 minute in the settings, which you might want to mention, but even so isn't it entirely possible to lose more than 1% a minute with everything turned on (GPS, Gestures, etc.) and ~17 minutes of constant cpu/gpu stress testing? It's a nice idea but it doesn't sound like it would yield very accurate results, unless I've misunderstood your post.
EDIT: Nevermind, I see how you can step through it 1% at a time now.

I've also noticed that you cannot really zoom in very far and at the highest zoom setting the % is still displayed in multiples of 10. Kind of tricky to differentiate between a 1% and a 2% drop.

You might be right, what would you suggest in order to yield more accurate results? I suspect that the heat is directly linked to a very quick drainage of the battery. How can we measure how much it affects the actual battery drainage?

I'm not criticizing you or anything and I'm not saying it's a bad idea, It's just that obtaining accurate battery results are tricky as everyone's device is different, has different settings enabled and are running different kernels/ROMs/etc. Batteries also seem to get more efficient as time goes on so newer devices might suffer from higher battery drains.
I'll run the battery temp test now though and see how hot mine gets!
I like your critical thinking, obviously you are right it is very trick but I believe the heat test itself could be very indicative. In the meantime I will try to find a better way to measure battery drainage.
So everyone please try to run the benchmark multiple times and submit the temperature.
The most I was able to get was 52C

The temperature increased less and less so I don't know how much higher I could get it.
Also, an easier way to poll the temperature is to do "adb shell dumpsys battery" over ADB. The temp will be displayed as something like 388 which means 38.8°C
Edit: It might be worth noting that the top of the phone, around the camera but more so on the screen side (so the cpu?) got incredibly hot. Almost too hot to touch. Kinda worrying, but I have spent the last half an hour stress testing, I guess

Thanks for your contribution Meltus! Really appreciated my friend. Also thanks for the ADB command it does make it easier but I doubt that you've read the correct temp as 38 appears to be quite low compared to what i got. Is your S4 a i9505 ?

It's also the temperature that dialling *#0228# gave me (I double checked they were both the same each time). And no, I have an i9500, running Omega ROM, if that helps.
Might want to mention the elementary precaution of taking off all case covers except for the stock case before testing to prevent insulation effect of case covers increasing battery temperature...
While you're at it you might want to standardize room temperature to 25 degrees C... I know for a fact that my device would never get hot no matter what it does if running in the freezing cold air-con'd metro...
What about brightness settings and whatnot. Should all be the same, so you have to give a standard.

dafaq right??? im really annoyed at sammy for this overheating S4... after 7 times testing the Antutu, i stopped and LITERALLY put my S4 in the lower compartment of the refrigerator to get it cooled down quickly cause im pretty sure the heat sensors inside would definitely be having some testing errors and the temperatures would be really really higher than that. even when i swipe between different homescreens the phone gets to 47°C which is really annoying.
can someone pls for the LOVE OF GOD provide any solution to this freaking problem? i have been worrying a lot for spending my $730 on an overheating phone...

Are you talking about the battery temperature? If so something is extremely wrong with your unit, my battery temperature never went past 45 even with high stress.
If in case you are pointing out the cpu temperature then there is no reason to freak out because the cpu can handle upto 90c + and can cool off pretty fast

And why on earth you ran Antutu for 7 times continously lol? None of the current generation phones can handle it for 7 times on a row afaik

im talking about the cpu temps. i ran antutu cause it was asked to be done for this thread.
and why would it be silly to run any app 7 times on the flagship device? its made to run the apps as much as people want thats why we pay a huge amount of money for these devices dont we? or else we should buy the low end devices
just saying cause i had heating up issues with devices before infact my last device Note 2 used to get a lot hot but not as much as this S4...
i desperately need a solution for this...

Yes we can read cpu temp and battery temp separately, use system tuner app to read cpu temperature.

You are not buying a flagship device just to run Antutu n number of times, do you? yes I accept we do pay huge money but that doesn't mean we can push the limit of a mobile and complain about it from a general user perspective . , it can be only done for experimental purposes and to understand the power /thermal envelope provided that it's done in the right way.
But how does running Antutu 7 times matches a real life scenario? Highly unlikely isn't it?
We are already pushing the limits of raw cpu power for a mobile, raw a15 cores are power hungry and often tend to heat faster than previous generation. Hence arm introduced the big little. The mobile heats up during heavy stress, but but that's expected with these powerful cores right? I'd better utilize the power wisely when needed rather than using it all the time. The cpu indeed gets hotter when stressed, it's the same With my s3 too the cpu temps reached upto 80,there is built in throttling mechanisms which will take of the cpu once the cut off temperature is reached. Have seen many benchmarkers these days using freezer test due to the thermal throttling in new gen devices. Yes the s4 heats up pretty quick than other mobiles but also cools down pretty fast and I think that's the way it is destined to work.
Hei one more thing, did you note how long it took to fallback to normal temps?

We were doing it to see if there was a correlation between excessive battery drain and overheating batteries. Mine never got any hotter than 40 and I have pretty great battery life. The OP was seeing temps of 50+ and I'm guessing he has poor battery life.
Could there have been a few batches of bad batteries sent out with devices?

Are you talking about battery temperature or cpu temperature? Haven't heard any stories so far regarding damaged battery, but may be possible.

Battery temperature. If someone's experiencing temperatures in excess of 50C and bad battery drain it would indicate a problem.

How to change your battery capacity

(Must be rooted)
Use Root Explorer or Equivalent.
(Can adb or command pull/ push with line if your know how inside twrp or on pc)
DIRECTORY: /etc/floating_feature.xml
Open it and Scroll or search until you see the capacity String value ...
Change it to the MAH of your desired battery.
Disclaimer: Any edits being made to batteries, charge speeds, % values, etc , can cause fires,
Do these at your own risk.

Theoretically, to make use of a larger capacity battery or else it'll show the same stock capacity regardless of it's real capacity.
Now I don't know how it is For S7/Edge or Samsung devices but I previously owned several HTC devices. The last I had was One S and it could accomodate the battery from One XL (same size but bigger capacity). Many have tried and replaced it but even the new capacity was shown correctly, phone wasn't using it at full. After researches it came out that, for effectively using a bigger capacity battery it was needed a new kernel compiled to make use of the new battery capacity.
My point is that, you might need that as well here and I really doubt that anyone can compile from source a kernel for Exynos that can contain such changes as I know that sources are proprietary not open. You might fit a bigger capacity battery but it could be that you won't benefit from it's increased size

There are reference files in the kernel ...
They reference battery capacity...
They are based off of a capacity % value
Basically an of/if command ... so in theory...
(Update: the theory was correct)
And a framework.res edit did suffice.
The file inside of framework-res res/xml/power_profile.xml
referenced a 3600mah battery ...
And the purpose of this is of course...
an aftermarket , fully synced , and properly programmed battery @ larger capacity 4200mah
To track all stats natively in any android rom
I use my device pretty heavy with it....
Background youtube, pandora, games, etc...
Stock S7 edge kernel/boot.img , modified build.prop (TeKHd Rom)
Also calibrated battery after changing the capacity values

You will also need tools to do so... (watch youtube for a guide on the hardware change)
Once you have your battery installed... you need to be rooted to make the edits... there are two references you need to change (in images i posted)
After the edits... run your battery 99% dead... do a calibration (apk on app store can do this)
Then let it die.. charge it to 100% while the device is off

This is my second time purchasing the same aftermarket battery... first time I installed it into a G928A (s6 edge plus)
Now ive installed it in this device... ive gone several months without seeing charge/discharge loss...
But heres the next question... say... you go through 2 batteries a year... 15$ each....
Would that not be worth the extra phone on time anyways?

Fair enough, but how do you really know it's 4200mah instead of the regular 3600mah?
After the Note 7 fiasco, people tend to be more careful about aftermarket batteries.
My question regarding this modification ist: Is the phone still waterproof after opening the case?

Any battery lithium... copper core... can overheat and cause what happened to the 7 line...
And this device claims to be water "resistant" ... but people were testing new units and ruining cameras... so...
I went with a ghostek atomic 2.0 case ...

They do make the adheasive with backglass replacement... but im content with my device ...
Longer batter... no overheating issues (2nd phone using them)
After doing the edits and the battery swap with the battery sync... big gains..
I Would Do this Experiment Again

Did you even found bigger aftermarket batteries? And did you ever tried to test the battery and his capacity before implementing them? I often have the feeling they are faking the written numbers on it

you can break out ohms law and calculate power
( find something that runs off the same voltage , and run the tests yourself for discharge rate @ hours )

There are applications that track power loss by MAH (mili-amp hour) if you use over the stock MAH rating... it would have a larger storage capacity.

im sorry my english isn't that good but i think the capacity of this battery is not related to the user nor there are many variables.
Probably i didnt used the right words but what i was asking for is for example:
Connect the battery to a constant current load and measure the time it takes to discharge the battery to a certain voltage.
Capacity in Ah = Current in Amperes * Time in hours​
that would give a good overview of the real capacity without using a fishy app or harassing a post

Is ZTE lying about Axon's 7 battery capacity?

I have installed many apps to find out the capacity of the battery all say 3100mAh. I installed and updated several versions of the O.S. from Marshmallow to Nougat thinking that maybe the OS were not showing the accurate battery size. But nothing...
As I've seen some videos tearing the phone apart and shows that indeed it has a 3100mAh only INSTEAD OF THE 3250mAh that ZTE claims it to have.
I am using the A2017G version bought from Amazon Germany. And it bugs and find it irritating that ZTE might be lying to us Axon users. Perhaps I'm wrong but.... I had to check with them.
After several emails and communication with ZTE they sent me this reply, which still DOESN'T ANSWER MY CONCERNS and their reply MAKES NO SENSE to me and I am an electronic engineer. I would like to hear from anyone who might have the same issue and/or just want to add some info. Thanks guys. Here's the reply from ZTE:

Thanks for contacting ZTE.
We are really sorry for the delay in response.
This email is with regards to the issue you had forwarded us about the wrong capacity battery that you have received.
We would like to inform you that, perhaps our concerned team has already informed you about the results they found from the test they performed.
However incase they haven't then, this is what they had to say about the battery issue.
The battery has two nominal values, one is the nominal value and the typical value. The A7 battery has a nominal value of 3250 mHA and a typical value of 3140 mHa.
As you mentioned by applying the check to the battery is 3100mhA, the possible reason:
1. Battery inspection application of the inspection program related to the application of detection methods affect the detection accuracy, the most accurate battery test is through a professional battery capacity test equipment to check, A7 battery capacity. The amount is measured by the battery capacity test equipment capacity, capacity is no problem.

As I've seen some videos tearing the phone apart and shows that indeed it has a 3100mAh only INSTEAD OF THE 3250mAh that ZTE claims it to have.

We would like to inform you that, perhaps our concerned team has already informed you about the results they found from the test they performed.
However incase they haven't then, this is what they had to say about the battery issue.
The battery has two nominal values, one is the nominal value and the typical value. The A7 battery has a nominal value of 3250 mHA and a typical value of 3140 mHa.
As you mentioned by applying the check to the battery is 3100mhA, the possible reason:
1. Battery inspection application of the inspection program related to the application of detection methods affect the detection accuracy, the most accurate battery test is through a professional battery capacity test equipment to check, A7 battery capacity. The amount is measured by the battery capacity test equipment capacity, capacity is no problem.

Oh my dear God you get 150 mAh less! What is this madness?
Okay jokes aside, the battery capacity is actually 3140 mAh. I've seen this number before buying the phone, on reviews and one of the official pages, and when I bricked it, I took it apart and the battery says 3140.
Now a couple of things. assuming that the battery is actually 3140, they are saying that the battery has 110 mAh more. They are stating that the battery is 3.5% bigger than it is in reality. Is it worth spending all that time and effort writing the OP, asking ZTE for explanations, even watching disassembly videos, because the battery is 3.5% smaller?
And what do you plan to do, turn it back because you'll have 12.6 minutes less SOT?

Yes, your jokes are hilarious indeed. I'm talking about the principles here man. They're claiming something it isn't true. False advertising.
When you go to a McDonald's and they give you a half empty box of fries (which sometimes happens) do you just take it? At then end of the day, you, me and the buyers in general pay for the price that a company asks for. I don't know about you but when I buy something I expect it to be in good condition and fit for purpose. Or at least with the same specs as they advertise...

Yes, usually what I would do is return it, I have no problem returning stuff if they don't meet my expectations and Amazon is usually good regarding refunds. But I would not return it in this case, because as you correctly said, 110mAh less won't make a huge difference. But again, it's the principles man.
One other thing is if you read ZTE's reply, it doesn't make a lot of sense. It all sounds a bunch of excuses to me. Oh! Sorry, unlike me, you probably won't have time to read it.

Hell they're not giving you half the capacity advertised - just 3.5% less, that's my point. You wouldn't bother if they gave you 3.5% less fries would you. i guess that this would be relevant if they actually shipped with 3000 mAh. False advertisement would be more like what has been going down with the OnePlus 3 and 5. They make their phones go full throttle to get the best results on benchmark apps, and they appear at the top of the list because most new phones have the same 835 anyways. Or with the Huawei P10s where they claimed UFS 2.1 and changed that on the last week, and you could even get eMMC storage

Both capacities are correct. If you fill it up with, say, QC3 or a 2A charger, it will go closer to the 3140 mark, but if you charge it with a 1A charger, it will go closer to the 3250 mark. All modern lithium-ion batteries do this. Using you analogy, it would be like filling the fry container (? whatever it's called) with the fry container filler (? I know this is wrong) really fast and getting, say, 100 fries, versus taking 10 seconds and getting 104.
I feel like as this device gets older, the expectations in general get unrealistically higher and higher... Especially for a device that's less than $300 with a 2K super amoled display and periodic fw updates... ?

Whoa that was a deep analogy
Batteries typically have two capacities listed: a minimum (min) and a typical (typ). All companies tend to advertise the typical capacity, even if the battery you have is closer to the minimum.
For example, the LG G3 is advertised everywhere as having a 3000mAh battery (the typ size), while the battery itself has a min of 2940mAh printed on it.
Another example is the Moto G4 Play, which has a typ size of 2800mAh (which is what gets advertised), but has a 2685mAh min printed on the battery itself.
ZTE seems to have only listed the minimum capacity on the battery itself, not the typical capacity.

S8 battery capacity shows only 1500mah from 0 to 100%

I have recently purchased this little usb battery capacity tester. I have used it on my 20000mah power bank and it showed me a capacity of around 16000mah. That seems realistic, considering that I have used that power bank quite a few times for a couple of years.
I then decided to test my S8 battery. I fully discharged it twice, to make sure that no mistakes happen, and then charged the phone while it's off. Made sure I am charging just the battery with no power being used.
The result was a little bit disappointing. I have gotten 1494mah ... Is that real ? The device clearly works, but the phone was bought last March. It's only 8 months old.
Any input will be helpful.

That thread is incorrect. If you go by that thread me and my wife's sister show exactly the same battery stats. 2741 mAh left and my sister is over a year old and it show me 2 cycles

Maybe you are right???
My S8 shows 8 cycles and 2733 mAh.
Phone is almost 2 yrs but I never (well, almost never) let it drop below 40% and as I understand it a cycle starts when the phone is below 20% - but correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm pretty sure 20 is the magic number. I did I looked at mine and it it's like 1471 x2 and my wife's capnom was exactly the same....
my phone is almost 3 months older and she charges sometimes 2 times a day so I don't believe those numbers are for checking capacity. But for something else.
I'm limited to the 80% charge by root and I never drop below 40% so the cycle thing I believe it's accurate

Well Hell, here I was feeling good having 2733 mAh on a 2 year old 3000 mAh phone
But I'll accept your view on the matter and just be happy I still have very good idle/ on screen time.

Yeah, can see it doesnt make any sense in regard to the mAh.
Also noticed your mAh is shown as 1471 and you have to multiply by 2, whereagainst my phone shows the 2733 mAh??
So guess the Capnom is monitoring something else.....

I bought mine second hand and unlocked it myself. Battery health says good.
I can see any negative effects : Sony and external test told the accu hold one day. In depend of usage my Accu is good for 1 to 3, 5 days (rooted and Pie)
