Rear Camera Scratched - LG G6 Questions and Answers

So I've been using this LS993 which is the Sprint version, for about 3 days now. It looks like the lens that covers both rear cameras is all scratched up. I ordered a case for the phone but it's not arriving untill tomorrow. I believe a case would have prevented this from happening but too late now. Do you think Sprint would exchange for a new one, or do you think LG would do anything about it? Thanks for any input.

They will not exchange for a new one unless you claim a manufacturer defect or something. FWIW, case would have probably done little to prevent that as almost all cases I've seen don't cover the camera. Maybe offered some protection by raising whatever could be rubbing against the lens off the phone a bit. But against sand or keys it's no match. The camera is Gorilla Glass 4 I believe, but just goes to show you that it can still be scratched.
I have cut out and placed an old screen protector over my cameras to prevent exactly this. With the camera being flush to the phone, there's no protection.

Are you sure there is no sticker on the lens that you need to remove?

Pretty sure there isn't. I've picked at the edges with no luck. I can't believe the glass would scratch that easily though. It had to have been from just setting the phone down on the table or kitchen counter.

Granite will scratch it. There's a durability test out there that mentions this...
I ordered a case before I even got my phone. Helps with gripping when taking shots and it won't slip out of the hand as easily...

Mine is 5 days old and also all scratched up. It has been in a case from the 1st hour. It seems that even rubbing it with a cotton shirt seems to scratch it even more. I'm going to asking for a replacement or possibly switching to the S8. This is a defect!!

Have you guys seen this?

Someone's claiming that the glass itself isn't what's scratched but rather a coating that comes off.

Saw that after I posted.

I just bought a g6 and had the same issue. I had a screen protector from thebforst minute I got it but it scratched anyway on the rear camera lens. I thought maybe there was a plastic film protecting the lens but couldn't pull anything off. I then returmed into trouble and got another one and the same exact thing happened??? I have not been near the beach or anything so I'm not sure where the scratches came from? So I'm temporarily using a film screen protector to protect it until I figure out what the deal is with this rear glass. I was a le to chat with only and she did say there was a film on the rear camera lens but again when I tried to pick the corners nothing happened. I really dont known what to think because if I take it back to T-Mobile they will think I'm nuts. But this does cause an issue with the camera. The pics get a bad, bad flare for night pics with street lamps. When the lens is clear the flare doesnt happen. What do we do? I will try and call lg again but the people in the phone arent technical. I kmow I read the post where he says there is a coating that you buff off but should that coating be there? I dont want to ship it to lg because I need a phone for work plus they repair centers never tell you what they did to fix it? Is there a film? If there is Jerry rig didnt mention it on his testing. How can we confirm what the true issue is? For 650 I better get camera quality I expect for that kind of money. I dont want to give it back because I dont want a big bezeled phone, plus I dont like Samsung or apple. The only phone to get is the oneplus3t but they are rolling out the one plus 5 in a month and that will be bezeless. I feel screwed

Same issue here. Multiple G6 handsets including mine and my manager's. All with scratches. Almost all had cases. I am very careful with my device. Seems that if you just look at it wrong it scratches.

Other than polishing the coating off the lens as someone else here has done, you can cover the lens with a lens protector until they come out with a tempered glass version. Several have deduced it is the coating that is getting scratched, not the glass.
Currently I am using the Nillkin H+PRO since it was the only thing available at the time. I reviewed it here and it has pictures... comes with a tempered glass screen protector for front, two camera lens matte protectors and installation kit.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71921533&postcount=50
I highly suggest to do this until you either you decide to polish, purchase tempered glass protection, etc. No reason to allow it to get worse. I think once a tempered glass protection comes out for the camera lens I will be good to go.

I use a screen protector. I've read too many stories of the Focus screen scratching way too easily. There also has been way too much uncertainty as to whether the Focus truly does have GG. So to be on the safe side, I protected mine right from the box.
But the Focus is the best WP7 phone to have, in my opinion. It can go up to 40GB. And has a lot of good things going for it.
what screen protector can you suggest? what do you personally use

I had the Ghost Armor installed at a local mall. It seems to be doing excellently. It sets up over time to where the clearness gets much better and eventually any dimples or whatever works their way out. It was $20 for the front and if you want the full body protected, $30 or $35, I can't remember. But I opted just for the screen protection because I use a case with mine.
It must be gorilla glass. I don't use anything on it and there are no scratches. Below is the proof. It's as strong a proof as I think we can have short of some engineering documents.

Yeah, we know. But the problem is, other people report they do have scratches rather easily. One person reported that simply putting his Focus in his pocket without anything else in his pocket put scratches on his. Other people say similar things. Some people say the are rough with theirs and never see any scratches. Still other say they put protection on theirs just in case.
If the Focus has GG, maybe it's a situation where some have it and others don't. There has also been speculation that, perhaps, the Focus comes with a factory applied screen protector (not the common removable one they all have) that may be the thing that scratches so easily.
Whatever is the case, one thing is certain: Nothing is certain.
1st, before posting a thread, PLEASE use search. There is a 5+ page thread on this very topic already.
As I wait for my Focus to return from repairs let me chime in on this. There is no screen protector on the Focus. It uses GG. I dropped mine onto cement and the screen shattered. The edges of the cracks were razor sharp. However the phone still functioned as it did before the break. GG is not cheap, they wouldnt use it and then put a plastic layer on top of it. In fact I don't think there is any coating on either side of the glass on the screen. The shards from the drop scattered everywhere. Safety glass coatings/layers prevent sharp edges and glass from flying around.

I dropped mine on gravel w/ the same result. Cost me $150+tax for repair.
Michael.
Mine has slid on asphalt, screenside down, no scratches. If it's not GG it's just as good.
My focus shares my pant's pocket with keys, coins and receipts and has no scratches on it, wish I could say the same about my iPhone...

If you are referring to me, give my post a real read and see that I am commenting on all the speculation there has been. I am not claiming anything about the Focus. And I have read all of the posts. Have you? Apparently not or you would be familiar with everything that has been said.
If you aren't refering to me, give the "quote" feature a good familiarization.

Camera Lens Scratch and crack right out of the box

So I just got the SGS2, converted from being an iphone user. I'm in the US so I order through Amazon. Got the phone and everything was alright. Well today im standing outside and for whatever reason, i decide to look at the lens cover and notices all these fine scratches and one deep scratch. I go inside and wipe it with a microfiber towel and thats when i realized they werent smudge marks. I took apart the back bezel and just slightly pushed on the lens and it cracked in half.
I can confirm this, the lens is glass. Cheap glass.
I put a piece of screen protector over the camera lens to protect it until I can figure out where the best place to order quality replacement parts are.
So far Cnn.cn has what im looking for but at a cost of 45 dollars. I know they have quality parts. I used to use them exclusively for parts for my blackberry. Anyone else have any suggestions?

[Q] Is the Nexus 4 camera lens cover made out of Gorilla Glass?

Or in other words, is the lens cover scratch resistant? I ask this because I had the unfortunate case of finding out the hard way - within just a couple of weeks of getting my S2 that the cover wasn't Gorilla Glass.
So if the N4's lens cover isn't Gorilla, then could someone recommend a scratch guard please? Or maybe a scratch guard for the entire back which also protects the camera lens?
This is just speculation because I doubt you could ever get the official answer, but I doubt it is gorilla glass. It is definitely not part of the back glass but an inset piece. Gorilla glass is usually used more for the strength rather than it's moderate scratch resistance so I doubt that they went to the trouble. It is also slightly lower than the surrounding surface which would naturally help prevent scratching. I don't know of any commercially available back protectors that would cover the lens, but if you are that concerned about it just get one of the generic screen protectors from walmart and a pair of scissors and make your own.
I've never damaged the lens to where it affected any of my phones and I've had a lot all the way to the g1.

Nexux 4 Camera LENS - NEED PART HELP
Sorry for digging up an older post but lets say hypothetically you broke your camera lens for the Nexus 4 (but everything else is ok) camera, back etc... any way i can find a new one? I've been looking and haven't been successful yet...
This is the only post I've seen that even talks about the fact that it appears to be a separate piece... it's not part of your back glass and it's "recessed" inside - nestled between the back and the camera itself... a little square piece...

Haven't found anyone selling just the lens cover, but you could buy the whole camera module for ~ $10. If you're looking for just the piece of glass between the camera and the back, then you'd have to buy the whole glass back unfortunately.. might be cheaper to just cut a bit of a clear screen protector and use it.

Somehow glitter got under my camera glass?

So i was looking at the camera lenses on my V20, and noticed that somehow, a piece of glitter got under my camera glass, right over the main camera lens. I have no idea how this could have happened. Has anyone else heard of this happening?

If you remove that screen protector the glass could shatter from just a scratch.

Ive read about the camera glass weakness. I took my protector off of my last one before I had got my replacement. It was fine, I'm very careful with my phone though. I don't set it down hard, I put it in my pocket with nothing else. I have a flip case so I can set the phone down on it's face worry free as to not mess with the back and camera housing either.. Not saying one should take it off just for the sake of it without reason, but if the OP has glitter under it, it might be good reason to remove it..
The protector has cutouts for the lenses though, right? If so, then removing the protector won't do anything for me since the glitter is directly over one of the lenses.

Camera Protective Glass Shattered

I have an armor suit protector front and back along with a caseology case, and have always been extremely careful with my mobile handsets. I boarded a flight with the camera protective glass intact, and left the flight with it shattered completely.
The phone never dropped and stayed in my pocket the majority time. The LG G5 and the LG V20 has had the weak camera glass problem, and now it seems the G6 has inherited this issue. Tmobile won't help, and has directed me to pay the $175 insurance deductible....I don't agree since this is a faulty design and not the fault of the user.
Anyone know if the G5 glass replacement for the camera is the same size as the G6? Or should I go through lgmobilerepair.com?
So without any impact or any physical damage at all the glass just shattered spontaneously?

oh yeah i already broke mine same problem with the g5 but its my fault im rough on my stuff but WHEN will they give things a real world test before releasing them???!?!??! i dont get why it couldnt just use the same more durable glass around it as one part....

Looking at the drop tests I didn't see the glass being broken so easily on the camera. I'm sure they have some "real world" engineering.

I have run into a similar thing. Spigen cover and tempered glass screen protector. I admittedly dropped my phone about 3 feet (with the cover on it) and was pretty surprised at the glass over the camera & flash spider-webbed like it had been on a head-on collision with no seat belt. I am extremely dissatisfied with that happening as salespeople are touting its MIL-STD 810G drop testing. Nothing else on the phone is scratched/cracked except the camera glass, which makes the camera unusable.
LG had no good response as "physical damage is not covered." But as has been mentioned, this appears to have been a big problem with the G5 and V20. I was upgrading from the G4 and didn't encounter any issues like that, although I did have the camera itself fail, but it was an easy replacement. I am certainly pretty annoyed as I know that undoubtedly any repair with nullify the water/dust protection capability of the phone in general. C'mon LG, this is really disappointing!
There are replacement lg g6 back covers on eBay. Any chance they include the glass?
LG offers repair service which includes a complete glass back and camera lens as one piece for $83. They claim it will retain its ip68 water resistant rating with a 2 week turn around.

Wow, IMO that's a pretty great deal. Okay, not if your camera glass broke spontaneously, but if you dropped your phone and cracked it.
Not great but the best deal so far because it sure beats the $175 deductible that the insurance companies offer to replace the whole phone.

tight radius glass cuts are a weak point for compression/bending in a pocket
camera glass shattered while in a sweatpant pocket, sitting on the couch. Took video of my daughter, put it in a pocket, took it out 5 min later, with a complete spider pattern. The break radiates away from the round filleted cut out for the flash. This, IMO, is a design flaw. Clearly a pressure point against a tight radius glass cut out. I don't want to waste time with LG repairing the stupid thing, i just want the replacement glass to be available for purchase. takes 2 minutes to swap out (peel up the broken glass, plop down the new adhesive - as i have found in researching this is a common problem on the V20).
