Replacement gorilla glass?

The digitizers on eBay prob aren't gorilla glass, right? Can you get replacement that is real?

Did you replace it or not? i am interested in how you brake it considering it is gorilla glass. How much force need to brake it?

True. Mine got dropped on the upper left edge of the phone(and it was from the height of 1m or less) and it got shaterd. Now I am searching for replacement. The phone and the screen still work but it just looks ugly.

edit* my post doesn't apply for this thread lol but it seems defy is brickproof also.

yes it can broke, it's just scratch resistant, not broke-into-pieces resistant.

Hi everyone,
I just received my new digitizer from Ecell and it's glass, not plastic, so so far so good.
However, does anyone know how to fit it to the phone ? I'm not sure if it comes with adhesive or not (didn't look at it in detail) and how to remove the old digitizer without damaging the phone ?

If I'm not mistaken someone here in XDA had already open up the Defy. Search and you find it. But you will need to replace the front casing as well once you opened up your Defy..

Ok everyone, I looked into this a bit deeper.
The digitizer I got from ebay selle Ecell looks genuine. It has the same serial number as the original and everything looks exactly the same. For those looking for a genuine Gorilla Glass replacement digitizer, I think we've found it.
There is no adhesive though and I am still looking for something suitable.
Farsight, you DONT have to replace the front casing once you've opened up the Defy. Or at least I don't see why you should.
Anyway, I'll keep you up to date as soon as my defy is back in action.

If I'm not mistaken, the idea for changing the front casing is to ensure the phone remains water resistant.

Trying to replace broken gorilla glass
Here is a video of me trying to replace the broken glass on my Defy. The replacement was successful although the final result got dirty from the glue I used.
A better solution would be to replace the whole front housing with speaker, glass and digitizer. Anyone knows where one can by a complete Defy front housing?

I bought mine from no.1-tech on ebay and it looks genuine to me, too. Did yours come in a plastic bag that says "resealable" and has a sort of glue strip to close it?
Btw, globaldirectparts has everything, the digitizer, the adhesive, complete front and back housing etc. but the minimum amount of 5pcs per item is kind of a turn-off...

Yes, mine came in a resealable plastic bag with a glue strip as well.
I ended up buying some two sided tape and I cut strips to fit where the original adhesive was. It all looks very clean but now the proximity sensor doesn't work properly and the screen turns off whenever I make or answer a call. It turns back on when I press on the screen in the top left hand corner. I tried searching for a way to recalibrate the proximity sensor but I haven't found anything that works on the Defy.
If anyone has any idea on how to do this (and I'm pretty sure it's possible), could you please let everyone know?

Happened the same to me. from 1 meter. i got the glass from ebay yesterday.

From the video. Best still to change the whole front casing together with the glass screen. It's very dirty in the end and surely the water resistant would not work anymore.
Did your Defy managed to power up? I see the video look like it's dead??

Yes, the phone did power up - battery was empty.
The phone is working ok but, as you mentioned, the glass got very dirty. Using another type of glue and being a bit more exact when fixing the new glass to the front housing might have given better result.
As for the water reistance I'm already convinced that the defy is water resistant but the front speaker is not. Already got two front speakers replaced because of water damage.
I'm looking for a front housing with glass and speaker. I've already tried to replace the speaker om another defy but that was not so easy because the speaker is glued to the front.

Camera Lens Scratch and crack right out of the box

So I just got the SGS2, converted from being an iphone user. I'm in the US so I order through Amazon. Got the phone and everything was alright. Well today im standing outside and for whatever reason, i decide to look at the lens cover and notices all these fine scratches and one deep scratch. I go inside and wipe it with a microfiber towel and thats when i realized they werent smudge marks. I took apart the back bezel and just slightly pushed on the lens and it cracked in half.
I can confirm this, the lens is glass. Cheap glass.
I put a piece of screen protector over the camera lens to protect it until I can figure out where the best place to order quality replacement parts are.
So far Cnn.cn has what im looking for but at a cost of 45 dollars. I know they have quality parts. I used to use them exclusively for parts for my blackberry. Anyone else have any suggestions?

Well I read a lot of places that it couldn't be done. I have successfully replaced just the glass. I recorded it on my Gopro so everyone can see how its done. If you find it useful hit the thanks Make sure you spread this around so people stop buying 300 dollar full LCD assemblies.

Fixed the sound issue with the video

I saw your post on Reddit. What I'm more interested in is how this affected picture quality. Obviously there's a layer of glue missing from inbetween the display and glass. Also you did a shoddy job on cleaning it properly before applying the new glass .

Lol... I did all of this last month. A bloody PITA to clean and remove all the glass shards (took me 2 hours just to clear up all the sharp shards of glass). Yes there is a layer of glue (it's acually some sort of silicone rubber) that you need to put on. My advice? I used the Selley's All Clear Multipurpose Co-Polymer Sealant, so it's crystal clear and not translucent as some other clear RTV Silicone. Also remember to use some microfiber cloth to clean the surface of the LCD and your digitizer before you seal it, if not, some dust/debris might get caught inside!
You need to put this layer of silicone because moisture will seep in and cloud up your screen, if you did not!
Again, if you want to save a good amount of money and your LCD is not cracked, AND you can DIY, by all means do this!

The shottyness was because everyone on the damn internet told me it wasn't going to work lol. If I did it now I would be MUCH more careful. I was going to send the device out for insurance anyway so I igured I would just try.

If you're talking about thu wire, taht is for the left and right buttons

It's good to see you can replace the lens without replacing the digitizer and screen. I broke my lens around 1 month after buying my S3. I live in Singapore. Samsung replaced the front of the phone for $137 SGD (~$111 USD).
If you are worried about this happening just get a squaretrade warranty with the accidental damage protection vs. having to DIY.

Rear Camera Scratched

So I've been using this LS993 which is the Sprint version, for about 3 days now. It looks like the lens that covers both rear cameras is all scratched up. I ordered a case for the phone but it's not arriving untill tomorrow. I believe a case would have prevented this from happening but too late now. Do you think Sprint would exchange for a new one, or do you think LG would do anything about it? Thanks for any input.

They will not exchange for a new one unless you claim a manufacturer defect or something. FWIW, case would have probably done little to prevent that as almost all cases I've seen don't cover the camera. Maybe offered some protection by raising whatever could be rubbing against the lens off the phone a bit. But against sand or keys it's no match. The camera is Gorilla Glass 4 I believe, but just goes to show you that it can still be scratched.
I have cut out and placed an old screen protector over my cameras to prevent exactly this. With the camera being flush to the phone, there's no protection.

Are you sure there is no sticker on the lens that you need to remove?

Pretty sure there isn't. I've picked at the edges with no luck. I can't believe the glass would scratch that easily though. It had to have been from just setting the phone down on the table or kitchen counter.

Granite will scratch it. There's a durability test out there that mentions this...
I ordered a case before I even got my phone. Helps with gripping when taking shots and it won't slip out of the hand as easily...

Mine is 5 days old and also all scratched up. It has been in a case from the 1st hour. It seems that even rubbing it with a cotton shirt seems to scratch it even more. I'm going to asking for a replacement or possibly switching to the S8. This is a defect!!

Saw that after I posted.

I just bought a g6 and had the same issue. I had a screen protector from thebforst minute I got it but it scratched anyway on the rear camera lens. I thought maybe there was a plastic film protecting the lens but couldn't pull anything off. I then returmed into trouble and got another one and the same exact thing happened??? I have not been near the beach or anything so I'm not sure where the scratches came from? So I'm temporarily using a film screen protector to protect it until I figure out what the deal is with this rear glass. I was a le to chat with only and she did say there was a film on the rear camera lens but again when I tried to pick the corners nothing happened. I really dont known what to think because if I take it back to T-Mobile they will think I'm nuts. But this does cause an issue with the camera. The pics get a bad, bad flare for night pics with street lamps. When the lens is clear the flare doesnt happen. What do we do? I will try and call lg again but the people in the phone arent technical. I kmow I read the post where he says there is a coating that you buff off but should that coating be there? I dont want to ship it to lg because I need a phone for work plus they repair centers never tell you what they did to fix it? Is there a film? If there is Jerry rig didnt mention it on his testing. How can we confirm what the true issue is? For 650 I better get camera quality I expect for that kind of money. I dont want to give it back because I dont want a big bezeled phone, plus I dont like Samsung or apple. The only phone to get is the oneplus3t but they are rolling out the one plus 5 in a month and that will be bezeless. I feel screwed

Same issue here. Multiple G6 handsets including mine and my manager's. All with scratches. Almost all had cases. I am very careful with my device. Seems that if you just look at it wrong it scratches.

Other than polishing the coating off the lens as someone else here has done, you can cover the lens with a lens protector until they come out with a tempered glass version. Several have deduced it is the coating that is getting scratched, not the glass.
Currently I am using the Nillkin H+PRO since it was the only thing available at the time. I reviewed it here and it has pictures... comes with a tempered glass screen protector for front, two camera lens matte protectors and installation kit.

I highly suggest to do this until you either you decide to polish, purchase tempered glass protection, etc. No reason to allow it to get worse. I think once a tempered glass protection comes out for the camera lens I will be good to go.

[GUIDE] Rear glass replacement

So recently I cracked the rear glass on my Pixel 2 XL. After searching around, I found the "official"repair places wanted around $80 to replace this. Then I found eBay had replacement glass for $13 (in the US, cheaper from China), and decided to give it a try. Figured worse case scenario I end up at the repair place getting the glass replaced anyway, and I'm out $13 extra.
This was not a difficult process necessarily, what I will say is that the glass used is extremely thin (stock and aftermarket), and the process of removing the old glass is likely to produce many tiny glass fragments.
Here's how I did it, if anyone is interested in giving this a try:
1. Mis en place. I used a couple plastic and nylon spudgers, guitar picks, one metal spudger, a hair dryer, and packing tape. I did this repair in the bathroom near the sink so I could easily brush small glass pieces into the sink and wash them down the drain.
2. Start off by heating up the rear glass with the hair dryer, but not too hot. You need to be able to hold the phone afterall. Take a piece of packing tape and place it over the rear glass to somewhat keep it together.
3. I used the thin metal spudger to get started on one side of the glass. I started on the broken side as I already had a gap there to work with. Slowly go around and remove the glass and double sided tape from the rear frame.
3. Remove the camera lens cover from the glass. It's attached to the glass with double sided tape. Most likely going to be small chunks of glass stuck to the front of the lens assembly.
4. Clean up any leftover glue/double sided tape and chunks of glass, so you have a nice clean surface to stick the new glass to.
5. Install the lens cover on the replacement glass, and clean the inside and outside of the lens cover and inspect the camera assembly itself for chunks of glass/dust/etc.
6. Install the new glass (with lens cover now attached) to the back of your Pixel 2 XL. Be very careful to line it up exactly where you want it to sit before dropping it onto the frame of the phone (you likely will not be able to peel it off and reapply it if you mess up, as the glass is very thin and would probably shatter if you try to remove it).
7. Profit.
That's about it. All in all this took me about 30 minutes from start to finish, and saved me just over $60. Worth it for a cheapskate like me ?

Hello everyone,
I've broken lil bit the glass and considering replacement. But don't want to lose waterprofness. What do you think about this statement:
"The glass back of the Pixel 2 is purely decorative, and the Pixel 2 will still be waterproof with a broken glass back.
Why? As can be seen in the teardown video at https://youtu.be/Zq7nyzldgr4 at 4:14, the back cover of the Pixel 2 goes underneath the glass. Also, it looks like replacing the glass back would not require a teardown, since there seem to be no screws holding the glass in place from the inside. I suspect the glass back is merely glued on or clipped in."
For me it sounds reasonable that waterprofness might still be there after replacement. Attaching screenshot of mentioned back cover which is going under the glass.

Pixel 2 is waterproof
Pixel 2 is IP67 rated meaning it's good for up to a metre depth of water, hence it being waterproof but if anyone was wondering even if you do break the back glass as I have it's purely cosmetic as there is some pretty strong plastic and glue behind it keeping the waterproof feature in place

How do you fix it to be waterproof like factory?
|Use waterproof glue around camera lens and LED lens or is there a adhesive to buy?
