Does anyone want Bixby? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

I've just been reading about all the "helpful" things the Bixby assistant will do. Perhaps I'm just an old fuddy-duddy, but I'd pay extra to have Bixby bound, gagged, and thrown in a closet somewhere. Does anyone find anything in the descriptions appealing? It reminds me of the smartphone embodiment of Microsoft Office "Clippy". Or perhaps the Gooseberry personal assistants Sam Vimes had running battles with in the Discworld novels .

Nope, don't want Bixby, Cortana, Siri, any of those cloud based assistants. If anything, the fact that Bixby takes up resources on the S8 is a decent sized strike against the S8 for me.

Not really! Very low priority...

There will be plenty of people that do want it. It'll be handy for the disabled and great when it's holstered in the car. I'm pretty sure it'll be optional and if it isn't, there will be ways to shut it down. Always nice to have new features you can use if desired. If they didn't push new tech or software features then the evolution of phones would come to an end and they would all be the same.

Samsung can build great hardware, but when it comes to software, it sucks... So: no.

Nope, none of the voice assistants are really that big of a deal. I hope we can remap that button to do something else. Would love it to be a dedicated camera button or maybe flash light button

Haha, I'm not sure which comparison I prefer
I really don't care for voice assistants so I doubt I'll use Bixby, even though it has the best name of them all lol

Do you think it can be turned off or button swapped for something else? Can swipe left from home to see bixby can be turned off?

No. There are enough cloud based "assistants" which do nothing but a glorified search for content, or convert text to speech. Gimmicks being sold as AI.
Besides, google assistant does more than this can anyhow, and is included.

i don't use these, no google now, no bixby, no assistant, no cortana, no s-voice....i prefer to do it myself instead of talking to the phone and people think i am weird...hehehe

I want it!
I really want to have the bixby app from S8 to my phone. Anyway I have an galaxy s4 i9505

If it can be programmed to start every response with "bingley bong beep" and address you as "insert name here" then it might have some amusement value.
Otherwise it will be worth rooting just to reprogramme the button to do something useful.

Absolutely not. The only voice-related app I even remotely use is Google Now, and that's specifically because it's less AI-like than Siri or Google Assistant.

I would actually want bixby IF... IF... it was always on always listening, even when screen off and on battery power... and you could just speak the command, ie. "make the screen dimmer" and it just does it. And!, if bixby was open for all apps ESPECIALLY Automagic!, and Tasker
Then i'd make that bixby button a fire extinguisher

I want it. I have a bunch of IoT stuff including over 50 Hue light bulbs. Using Samsung Connect and Bixby within my phone (vs. a separate app or individual widgets) to control my Samsung SmartThings Hub sounds a lot simpler and more integrated than using Alexa on my Echo for voice stuff and a combination of apps for touch. It all depends on how Bixby's executed which remains to be seen.

I don't know about others but I rarely use voice control on my devices (except the Echo) because usually it's easier just to type (or on a Note device, write). With voice driven devices you have to know their limitations and ask them limited structured queries. The selling point of Bixby is that it's context aware so you can go between voice commands and typing at will. That and it can reply to less structured queries and learn from what it processes. Sounds like a great goal but I'm guessing Bixby will be a work in progress.
The big advantage the financial analysts say Samsung has with Bixby over Amazon, Google, and Apple is the gazillion IoT-capable devices (TVs, microwaves, washers, dryers, SmartThings) they sell annually. All those things I expect will support Bixby starting with this year's models. That's a huge piece of leverage that others who sell but not build connected devices will never have. Kind of like Apple/Google depending on car makers to support Android Auto and Car Play vs. Samsung building both the car and the connectivity integration.

This phone will still come with Google voice also. If you don't like Bixby you dont have to use it. If the S8 is ever rooted you'll also have the option to freeze it making it disappear. And, who knows you may even come to like it or find it tolerable. :good:

Best software for one handed operation

Hey guys, I'm loving the Xda Trion (Hermes), but I'm finding it's use as a phone / SMS device a bit sub-par. It's so annoying to have to use the stylus to send a quick text message, for example, and having to use the built in keyboard and trying to text while walking is a non-starter.
Basically, I'm just wondering what third-party software other people are using to make the Trion more of a one-handed phone (in the style of a Sony Ericsson K800, for example). I'm in particular need of a half decent SMS app, that lets me use the touchscreen with my thumb. It doesn't matter if it's free or commercial software; I'm interested in anything that can make the phone functionality of this pda better.
Also, is there any third party software that can improve the camera? Or anything that can manage associations (i.e. the applications which open whenever a file has a certain extension e.g. ".avi").
Cheers!!
Many different questions warrant many different posts, best not to lump them all together.
For managing associations, I use GSFinder.
What do you want to do to improve the camera?
Have you tried SPB Mobile Shell (re one hadned use)?
V
Hiya!
I would rather lump them in altogether so that I can get lots of different answers and opinions to look over in the same thread!
Regarding the camera, seeing as it's essentially a software program which takes the pictures, I just wondered if there is third-party software out there that provides a better interface to the camera, or removes the blurriness from photographs.
Haven't tried the Mobile Shell. Does this improve texting with one hand?
Edit: The camera and file associations thing is secondary really. It's the calling and texting with one hand that I'm really interested about.

Mobile Shell doesn't help with texting, but makes all the other functions more or less on your phone much easier to operate by thumb! Free trial available.
For texting, try Tengo Thumb, which means you can just use your thumb(s) to input text, no stylus needed. Free trial available.
I think the moderators generally advise keeping posts to one topic (although the moderators are the worst examples for not doing this), and then making sure that your post title matches your post, eg
"Miscellanous musing and ruminations on the use of single digit physical input, improving the camera software and how to assign file associations".
And squeeze that into the topic title length limitation!
Check out the various text input (SIP) replacements that will let you define your own large input keys. Some are free.
I wrote a skin for ThumbKeys once, which I found to be particularly effective.

Hey vijay, nice to see u're back
What "thumbkeys" are you refering to?
Sorry. my bad Glancing at my own old posts show that I have some kind of Freudian oversight embedded in my mind - it's not thumbkeys, despite me always referring to it as such, it's Touch Keyboard - http://www.orthancsoftware.com/TKeyboard.htm
I haven't used it for many years, since moving to the Hermes I use the SIP less and less. But for relatively large amounts of input on a non keyboard device, Touch Keyboard was the easiest for me to skin to my satisifaction, after trying many types of skinnable keyboards.
There are other more "conventional" SIPs for use with big thumbs.
If you're a real psycho you can check this one out:

PS: yeah, I don't know if I'm "back" yet, I've been super busy at work (I'm a lawyer and we just got absolutely blown out of the water on this big case that took 6 months of last year up).
But hopefully I'm logging in again, and it's nice to see that not too much has changed! Some new faces, lots of new roms! I found it rather amusing to see some of my stuff in http://wmblack.info/

What I do is that I have installed the "Smart Dialer 2.0" which can be found at www.pocketpc.myluckypda.com.
Using this application you search for your contact using T9 (Very good for one handed operation due to large buttons). Once the contact is found this application has the option to take you directly to messaging application with the touch of a button. From here on I use the "SPB On Screen Keyboard" to type the message and send it. Alternately I can also use the slide out keyboard on my Jasjam but I am a bit reluctant to do so for the fear of its getting loose over time.
And if you want real one handed operation I suggest you use Smart Dialer to search for the contact and take you to the messaging application, followed by the Intellipad as has been posted above.
Regards
Hey guys, many thanks for the excellent suggestions so far! I'm gonna research these when I get back from work today.
Cheers!
Just wanted to say I'm using the Intellimate Phone Pad and it's awesome!
One thing I noticed though, it's actually an HTC cab, dated 2004. It does the job, but I'm just wondering if there is a newer version out there. I like to have the very latest version of all my apps!
Vijay,
Which of your apps (or is it someone else's?) makes your top bar have all of those icons with the counters for how many SMS's, missed calls, etc.
That seems like an excellent usage of the real estate!
You mean in this screenshot? Or something else?

the counters for email, sms, voicemails, etc. across the very top.

yes. No button mapping needed.. PTT button is a software button on program.
Likin it! Thanks Volt
I also can verify that it is working nicely, a few glitches to work out all in good time. I used HButton to remap the program so when minimized it comes up, then on my wizard I use the center on the d pad and hold while I talk then release. Just like nextel, bit slower but free, what can I say! You have to (sender and receiver) both be set up on the system to communicate but that doesn't take too long to get set up. Put the word out and we can all help work out the kinks so this system can run smoothly. Remeber before you lauch you must already be connected to the internet. Andason is also correct, if you leave it open then you would not have to do any mapping at all as the program uses the select button on your phone. If it is a different button on your phone it will not be difficult to find by trial and error. Remapping isn't that difficult and HButton is a free program, works great...................Later.
Hey Voltage?
Hey Voltage do you know how a person with a touch screen only (no hardware buttons) can utilize this great software. Is there an issue because of the lack of a default hardware button to access?

some quick questions...

1. do the headphones have a Mic? and if so, does it have button(s) on it to answer/end calls? can you do voice dialing with it?
i am currently using an IPhone 3GS where i can raise/lower volume, pause/play music and call people using voice control. just curious if the stock headphones can do all of this, or failing that if any aftermarket ones are available that provide these capabilities.
2. does any sort of Palm Pre styled application switcher exist? right now i can bring up this with a long press on the home button or spreading my fingers on the home screen, curious if this functionality is available on the N1/Android because it is extremely convenient.

In standard Android long press on home brings up a grid of the 6 most recent applications. Only icons though, no live view. And no closing apps from there.
Don't know an app like the one in your screenshot. I'd surely be interested if you or someone else finds / codes one.
1. N1's earphone does have a mic, you can next/play/previous music, and answer call. U cannot volume up or down using the earphone though. Voice cannot be activated using earphone, but you could hold the search button at home page to activate it
2. The app you show is just for the visual purpose. iphone does not have multitasking like Pre or Android, so why we need that fancy card slider anyway.
You can bring up the notification bar to switch between current opening apps

i knew about the long press on the home button from playing with the Android 2.1 Emulator. but i was hoping for something more aesthetically pleasing.
and yeah, the program in my screen shot is extremely convenient and aesthetically pleasing for switching programs. but i can imagine the pull down shade at the top of the N1 probably accomplishes all the same tasks...

are you sure voice search cannot be activated? nobody has added in this capability? that's unfortunate because it is really nice to use for making calls without removing the phone from your pocket. hell, with Google navigation you could probably use it for walking directions to somewhere as well.

my 3GS can Multitask, just poorly. even with the added ram (256MB) i can only run 2-3 applications at most before experiencing crashing since the apps were not designed with backgrounding in mind (for example, to play a basic game while running pandora i have to shut down Safari completely to free up enough ram for the other two programs..)
You can scroll through the running Activities/Tasks/processes with "AppSwipe".
Can be bound to a longpress on the search soft-button. Quite customizable too.

The basics first, Dialer one is an excellent dialer, T9 contact search, speeddial, and many other benefits over the incredibly lackluster stock dialer. Handcent is my choice for texting, Barcode scanner will let you scan qr's and head directly to them on the market. BTW online is the best way to browse the market, android zoom http://www.androidzoom.com/ or appbrain http://www.appbrain.com/ are a couple popular choices. You can then put your spanking new barcode scanner to work as you farm the market.

Yeah that reminds me that I need to pick up Handcent on day 1 of my n1. I hear that its god's gift to android. Does it still do the voice-to-text thing?
I like handcent, but its such a bloated program. It doesn't seem to be slow though. I have been using the stock app lately just to see if I miss any features from handcent, and wit my usage, no I haven't, only a few minor adjustments to functionality. The stock app tends to handle sending messages when you have no signal then move into an area with signal. Sometimes in buildings I have poor signal and while holding the phone my signal dies. When this happens using handcent, the message will always be in limbo even after acquiring signal, and I must manually try to send it again. The stock app does not seem to have this issue.

That's HelixLauncher (not sure if it works on non rooted phones). Not sure which icons you mean as it doesn't show windows that you have open, so here's the rundown: It has an option to allow you to double tap on screen to preview your other homescreens, then tap on any of the preview tiles to move to that screen (those are the white tiles you see above the app icons). It also allows you to put 4 applications (not widgets) next to the app menu app menu icon, these 4 applications will appear in any of the homescreens you go to, just like the app menu icon.
Helixlauncher2 is great as well, it looks like the native N1 launcher but with the same enhancements as the regular helixlauncher.

Yep, also text to voice. Bloat is often ascribed to handcent but to my mind that conjures up slow performance or features tripping over themselves. I never have slow performance and the extra features stay out of the way unless you use them. Even the ads only show up in the menu and so taking no screen real estate while using the application. I call it a winner, any application that hopes to supplant it is going to have to be totally on its game.

Thanks for introducing me to Dialer One! Awesome app. Stock phone app sucks.
I was floored that anyone would release a phone with a dialer at the level of craptacularness that is the stock dialer. No speed dial? I mean c'mon.

Favorites?
Setting profiles, better and cheaper than locale. Very useful

You can have the dialer up and swipe horizontally between the call log, favorites and contacts. I do not use favorites as the old school speed dial (press and briefly hold any number from 1 to 99) is faster. The predictive search works very quickly to get to any contact and is faster than using contacts itself. I dont even have a contacts icon on the home screen anymore.

Home button long press

If I accidentally long press my home button it opens the Google App. Is there anyway to disable this? I can't find it.
I think if you go into Applications and clear the defaults for the Google App it will stop that. The next time you long press it will ask you what you want it to do as the default. I don't recall what the options are after that.
Thx it was in applications but, the tab default applications. Than "app device support" than you can choose for Google App, svoice, grenify or none. Thx for guiding me to the right direction.

I've tried this but Now on tap is still the default one, I've checked for Now on Tap in settings but can't see anything.
Go to Settings->Applications->Default Applications->Device Assistance App and between "Google Now" and "None", select "None" and you're good to go

Ok I've done that, however now when I press and hold the home button nothing happens....I've also reset the Svoice defaults ?
The strange thing is whilst I'm connected to my Bluetooth car kit if I hold down the talk button it asks what to set as default, once S Voice is set I then try the home button but still nothing ?
Bump
I've managed to get S-Voice back, in case anyone else has the same issue this is what you do....
Enable the Quick Dial option under Galaxy Labs,
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
this then enables S-Voice and then you should see it under the Device assistance app setting
This has took me several days off messing around ?
It was in here since the 18th but with screens it makes it much more clear, Thx for sharing.

i'm using S5 G900F MM rooted, my problem is. my soft recent key is broken! can i change my home long press or double press shortcut for recent or switch app?

from ph
If your recents button is broken, how did you get to the recents screen shown in your attachment?
There's an app called HomeBot that will let you customize what a long press home button does, including showing Recents.

I f#$%&%g hate the new Google Assistant defaulted function when long pressing the home key. Prior to this latest update, long pressing the home key got me to my news feed provided by Google.. I read that **** every morning!!! Is there a way to get that back????

My Thoughts EXACTLY Juanito157! I just don't understand why the Hell these companies feel the need to "VIGOROUSLY FIX" SH!TE THAT ISN'T BROKEN!! And 9 times out of 10, they Remove or "Hide" options and widgets that were Just Perfectly Fine where they Freakin were to begin with. I Swear between my PC's, Android Devices, Gaming Systems and others like FireTV Box etc... I Must waste on average, at LEAST a Hour, Almost Every Damn Day, Just WATCHING & WAITING for UPDATES! It's getting really Outa Hand & Insane Lol.... Anyway's, So Sorry for the Rant, a little off topic... BUT YES, PLEASE Let us know if anyone has found a way to Revert or Change back to the way Google was before they HAD TO "FIX" IT ; ยค }
I loved it because I could long press Home & "Force" Copy /Paste Info from almost anywhere, Even Screen Shot Pics. Now, If this feature is still available and I'm just being a Moron, Which is very possible, can someone Chime in and Help a guy out Please!
*** And I know that there are 3rd Party Apps that will do the "Copy Anywhere" thang... It was just NICE & CONVENIENT having the option built right into Google..
THX & AS ALWAYS, XDA IS THE SH!TE!!
