Best software for one handed operation - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hey guys, I'm loving the Xda Trion (Hermes), but I'm finding it's use as a phone / SMS device a bit sub-par. It's so annoying to have to use the stylus to send a quick text message, for example, and having to use the built in keyboard and trying to text while walking is a non-starter.
Basically, I'm just wondering what third-party software other people are using to make the Trion more of a one-handed phone (in the style of a Sony Ericsson K800, for example). I'm in particular need of a half decent SMS app, that lets me use the touchscreen with my thumb. It doesn't matter if it's free or commercial software; I'm interested in anything that can make the phone functionality of this pda better.
Also, is there any third party software that can improve the camera? Or anything that can manage associations (i.e. the applications which open whenever a file has a certain extension e.g. ".avi").
Cheers!!

Many different questions warrant many different posts, best not to lump them all together.
For managing associations, I use GSFinder.
What do you want to do to improve the camera?
Have you tried SPB Mobile Shell (re one hadned use)?
V

Hiya!
I would rather lump them in altogether so that I can get lots of different answers and opinions to look over in the same thread!
Regarding the camera, seeing as it's essentially a software program which takes the pictures, I just wondered if there is third-party software out there that provides a better interface to the camera, or removes the blurriness from photographs.
Haven't tried the Mobile Shell. Does this improve texting with one hand?
Edit: The camera and file associations thing is secondary really. It's the calling and texting with one hand that I'm really interested about.

Mobile Shell doesn't help with texting, but makes all the other functions more or less on your phone much easier to operate by thumb! Free trial available.
For texting, try Tengo Thumb, which means you can just use your thumb(s) to input text, no stylus needed. Free trial available.

I think the moderators generally advise keeping posts to one topic (although the moderators are the worst examples for not doing this), and then making sure that your post title matches your post, eg
"Miscellanous musing and ruminations on the use of single digit physical input, improving the camera software and how to assign file associations".
And squeeze that into the topic title length limitation!
Check out the various text input (SIP) replacements that will let you define your own large input keys. Some are free.
I wrote a skin for ThumbKeys once, which I found to be particularly effective.

If someone could also point me to Image stabilizing software, a moisture proof Herms case, HCSD drivers (to store pictures), screen cleaner, and a prvacy filter for my screen, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks.

My sincerest apologies - I was indeed trying to be facetious. Did not mean to hijack your thread.
Sheesh - now I *am* curious why you would want one-handed operation so urgently.

Hey vijay, nice to see u're back
What "thumbkeys" are you refering to?

Sorry. my bad Glancing at my own old posts show that I have some kind of Freudian oversight embedded in my mind - it's not thumbkeys, despite me always referring to it as such, it's Touch Keyboard - http://www.orthancsoftware.com/TKeyboard.htm
I haven't used it for many years, since moving to the Hermes I use the SIP less and less. But for relatively large amounts of input on a non keyboard device, Touch Keyboard was the easiest for me to skin to my satisifaction, after trying many types of skinnable keyboards.
There are other more "conventional" SIPs for use with big thumbs.
If you're a real psycho you can check this one out:
http://www.viksoe.dk/code/phonesip.htm
V
PS: yeah, I don't know if I'm "back" yet, I've been super busy at work (I'm a lawyer and we just got absolutely blown out of the water on this big case that took 6 months of last year up).
But hopefully I'm logging in again, and it's nice to see that not too much has changed! Some new faces, lots of new roms! I found it rather amusing to see some of my stuff in http://wmblack.info/

phone pad
ei, i dunno exactly what u want but i hope this cab file helps with regard to your problem with "making your trion a one handed phone".. this one looks like the phone pad in the xda mini.. you could compose SMS the same way when you do so with an ordinary cellphone.. works great with my xda atom. u have to install it in the main memory k? i couldn't remember where i got it.. hehehe.. hope this helps..

What I do is that I have installed the "Smart Dialer 2.0" which can be found at www.pocketpc.myluckypda.com.
Using this application you search for your contact using T9 (Very good for one handed operation due to large buttons). Once the contact is found this application has the option to take you directly to messaging application with the touch of a button. From here on I use the "SPB On Screen Keyboard" to type the message and send it. Alternately I can also use the slide out keyboard on my Jasjam but I am a bit reluctant to do so for the fear of its getting loose over time.
And if you want real one handed operation I suggest you use Smart Dialer to search for the contact and take you to the messaging application, followed by the Intellipad as has been posted above.
Regards

Hey guys, many thanks for the excellent suggestions so far! I'm gonna research these when I get back from work today.
Cheers!

Just wanted to say I'm using the Intellimate Phone Pad and it's awesome!
One thing I noticed though, it's actually an HTC cab, dated 2004. It does the job, but I'm just wondering if there is a newer version out there. I like to have the very latest version of all my apps!

Vijay,
Which of your apps (or is it someone else's?) makes your top bar have all of those icons with the counters for how many SMS's, missed calls, etc.
That seems like an excellent usage of the real estate!

You mean in this screenshot? Or something else?
V

yes, that screenshot.
the counters for email, sms, voicemails, etc. across the very top.

How are you guys customizing your today screens?

I know you can download different today plug-ins, and i know about VisBar and such, but I don't see how your today screens look so different from mine (after looking at various 'today screen' threads).
My screen is just several horizontal lines, with the usual "no new messages", "active tasts", etc, and a couple of plugins.
I see people's screens with a completely different layout.
Cheers for any replies

Thanks for the link, very helpful.
How do you get rid of only the bottom toolbar in WM5? I downloaded the program that other people had used, but I could only get rid of the top bar (which i'd prefer to keep), and not the bottom one.
Cheers
matheprat: If you're referring to the program ToggleToday, I haven't released it yet for WM5, but it's coming very soon.

If you need an alternative, try Wisbar Desktop Advance.
V
Note: Wisbar 2 or desktop is very very laggy
Use PPX instead if you want better speed, its just as good as WisDesktop.
This is the skin I m currently using
Does PPX work on WM5? Looking on their website it doesn't mention specific compatibility, but has anyone got it runniung satisfactorily?
Cheers,
Fin
Yes, I forgot to mention PPX. It takes quite a bit of headscratching to get it set up, but it works well in the end. Never tried it on WM5.

There's so many program's out there that can change the way you're today screen looks

I'm still looking for a alternative interface for my phone to operate more easily with my fingers instead of my stylus.
It's so hard to quickly find a contact in my contact list while on a bike, in my car, etc since the scrollbar is like 3 pixels wide. Or to lock the phone or close an application, the icons are to frigging small
Not that I have big hands, rather small for a guy even but still...
Any suggestions?
matheprat: not sure when it'll be released, when I get time!
I'm working on too many other things as well, it's really just when I get a few minutes to work on each bit. Hopefully release fairly soon, as I said, WM5 is done, I need to join it to my old WM2003 code and then check it against a companion today plugin I wrote. Quite a bit of behind the scenes stuff involved

I didn't mean to come accross pushy, sorry if I did. I know there's a lot of work needed in developing programs, and no doubt it will be worth it when it is released.
Many thanks
matheprat: no offence taken at all, didn't think you were being pushy.
ToggleToday was one of the first programs I ever wrote, and then I bought myself a Universal to start development on, but accidently wrote VJBigPhone and that kept me busy for a month or so
Now VJBigPhone has gone quiet, I'm finally getting around to re-writing ToggleToday! It's a messy program to write, particularly for dual WM5/WM2003 compatibility, but the basic code is written. Now I'm wrapping it together and will work on a GUI for it.

The MOST stable Today Information plugin eva
By the way, can someone recommend the most stable Today Information Plugin?
I was using latest PowerLevel plugin by ScaryBear but it has lots of memory allocation/deallocation problems. Then I switched to simple 15Kb "TodaysInfo" plugin by Lou Terrailloune (v1.7) and it is quite stable but it has significant rendering delays when rotating screen. So, what is the most stable/fastest one to show battery/memory levels and perhaps it can inform you when your battery charge completed (aka PowerLevel/AudioInformer)?
Thanx!!!
Sounds good - any chance of a link?

Today Plugins: which is most used?

Cause of low memory space i need to know how many users prefer a today plugin instead another.
Ps: If is Others (must have similar today functions of the softwares in the poll) , please write something about it!
Thanx for your contribute and sorry fotr my BAD english!
SkizZO: that's a very big question. What do you want your plugin to do? Many of us use many different plugins for very different reasons.

ok you've right! but all the software in the Poll has this function.

Calendar+ and PPCprofilesPRO.

Arto.
Currently ?
- JGUI Zodiac Date (jeus for the date, and it doesn't pop up anything if you accedently tap it )
- tAgenda (used to have Tasks, Inboy and CalenderPlus, tAgenda makes all three obsolete)
- Oh, and Nakka's TDLaunch, because it let's can configure Iconsize and margins !
Not really a Today Plugin, but it replaces Todays info perfectly : W-Tools ResInfo (yes, Battery stats, Storage and Mem gauge in the Tray! It even shows charging )
My taskmanager is PocketNav, and i use the camerabutton as TodayToggleOFF and the memobutton for TodayToggle (Hi Vijay ! Great tools ! Normaly i would have taken a dozen pictures of side of my pants !
Now nothing really serious happens if the buttons get pushed accedentaly!)
Wow, someone actually uses TodayToggle?!
There's a name I haven't head for a looong time
I like it, but I will really have to think of something useful to do with that app some day!
V
Well, it's usefull enough for me.
I used to have "Today" under a button, but always shutdown the PPC afterwards, so.......
And if i use TTN5, i don't want to PPC to trun of, hence....
AND i always had a problem with accendently pressing the side buttons, and now the at least don't open "Tasks" or like i said, worse; the camare and starts shooting...
Btw, i tried Hidestart, but it doesn't seem to do anyting but temp. show time and batt %....
I'm still looking for all kinds of "Thumbs only" or "Thick fingers" solutions, i use my PPC a lot 'one handed' or in the car...
Espec. setting snooze to 15 min. or so in the car is considdered 'reckless driving'
I haven't developed HideStart any futher than a very early preview a long time ago. I've got some ideas about changing the way notifications are presented, particularly in VJSihaya, but I still like the idea of HideStart.
However, I think that when you "ghost" reminders, they still try to silently activate themselves from time to time, which causes your current app to lose focus, which is irrititing if you're typing something. I thought it was a bug in my code until I realised this. However, I still use it to ghost reminders from time to time when I'm too busy to snooze them all
It's possible some code I wrote for the upcoming release of VJOkButt (used to get around incoming call notifications) might be of help here... but HideStart is not a priority right now unfortunately. I actually just developed it for my own use in a modified version so that I could switch between Start Bar, New Bar and ToggleToday. It shouldn't really have been released, but I thought the reminder remodeling code was a useful idea to demonstrate... more later, I've got work to do

So do i, if it worked If i only could find a decent prorgamming/scripting language for the PPC. Although Mortscript is pretty nice, it misses so features....
And i'm not really a programmer, more like a scripter... Maybe i should take some time to dive into VB or eVB (I can do quite nice things in Acces on the desktop !)

Doesnt thebuild in tasks plugin work for you?? Or you want a more "post-it" notes kinda feel??
I just want like one line on my today screen to write whatever I want....for example......like the owner informations with phone number is 2 lines.....I want to disable that and write my own information in one line.....doesn't have to be owner info....just anything I want.....it's kinda hard to explain.....and I want to to be able to use chinese characters to write too.....

hey vijay, very interesting the way you made it look so small and efficient! mind sharing it? interesting little application; although i don't use it as much it's good as a quick scratch pad for all occasions...
Someone just emailed me about the skin.
I've found a copy on my ftp - I haven't used the plugin for a while, because I'm still migrating my setup to WM5 and deciding on new plugins.
But hopefully this is the skin shown:
http://www.vijay555.com/vj/!tools/notestodayskin/notestoday_skin_new.zip
I modified the skin to take almost no room, but be stylus selectable, but particularly selectable with the dpad. I can't remember if I had to edit the registry, but basically you can switch minimised and maximised mode by scrolling down the today screen with the dpad and clicking enter. It'll shrink/expand accordingly

Hi Vijay,
I Guess this is off topic. But on one of the screenshots your have an extra blue bar underneath the start button. With two arrow vertical up anddown at the start and sms, phone, and bluetooth etc. in it. I also saw some sort of profiles program with the same arrows in a later screenshot. with seems like profiles to me.
Are those programs the same and if yes, which program is it? I'm tried several programs Pocket Zen phone and WM Profiles. But wasn't happy because the vibrate function didn't work properly on my wizard.
Let me know, thanks.
Cheers
Shah
Shah, the blue bar near the top in my 18 August 2005 screenshots is an early version of my PhoneAlarm skin. This was refined into the one you can see in my 5 April 2006 screenshot, at the top of the screen (being used via my VJToggleToday program).
This is used to select profiles (where the normal "Vibrate" icon is at the top of the screen, clicking this brings a drop down menu with my profiles, Work, Home, Silent, FlightMode)
PhoneAlarm is excellent, generally. Profiles are a very basic feature on any phone, and it's mindboggling that it's not a standard feature, but I like PhoneAlarm, and Bruce, the author (you can also see my slightly hacked version of AlarmToday as well in the screenshots).
My 5 April 2006 screenshot also shows claunch at the bottom (apologies for the stupid icons, I lost some icons when I changed phones), being used to change PhoneAlarm profiles with my thumb. So I can make calls/send SMS using VJPhoneTools, change profiles (PhoneAlarm), and launch selected apps all from the same plugin.
V
Vijay, do you not find PhoneAlarm is resource-heavy?
Also, is that skin on your home page? (I've had a look and can't see it)

Thanks in advance.
Cheers!
Puzom:
I may have the skins at home. Frankly, it's easy to write your own. The standard skins are nothing exciting!
Webreaper:
My phonealarm skin is towards the end of the first post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=27331&highlight=vjtoggletoday
I've used PhoneAlarm for pretty much my whole year on XDA devs, and never found it to be a problem on resources. There are simpler ways of doing what it does, but it's useful, and gives me easy control of profiles etc. Bruce is filling it up with stuff I can't imagine needing, like cell based profiles etc, but I'm happy with the basics - notifications, mail count, profiles etc.
PhoneAlarm or a similar app is essential IMHO for effective use of the phone.
I've had trouble with AlarmToday since upgrading to WM5, but the old WM2003 version was flawless and very useful too.
V
Thanks Vijay. Your skin looks the simplest and neatest I've seen.
I really liked the idea of the cell-based profiles, in particular for things like enabling wifi for when I'm at home, but disabling it when I'm at work. Unfortunately, my house and office are both on the same cell.

• Multi-language keyboard support
• Sound addition with the possibility to add any sound
• Easier addition of own skins
• Less memory usage
The Resco Keyboard PRO is definitely worth checking out.

Appreciate the heads-up. Looks very nice and appears much more visually dynamic than SPB FullScreenKeyboard.

Just tried it and I'm not getting on well with it. Usually though it does take me a while to get used to a new keyboard, "touchpal" form teksoft is my preferred keyboard at the moment, It also has a new commercial version out. I'll try the resco a bit more, but my first impression is unimpressed.
Uniqueboy,
Set the keyboard size to the one where you can use your thumbs, then either use your thumbs or, as I do, use a stylus on that size keyboard. Works for me but I appreciate we all have different tastes/preferences.
ATM, for me, this stands above SPB FSK.

really nice improvements! goin to try it immediately!
but it seems like xda is becoming more and more a post new apps forum is becoming hehe

I agree. I tried SPB Keyboard a while back and found it just plain hard to use (especially with SMS). This on the other hand is a breeze to SMS.
Looks nice but I can't get a simple answer as to how to enter a "_" (underscore) char using the iPhone-like skin on Resco's forum. Also, there's not much info on how to customize the keyboard itself although there are various ini's and config settings.
PocketCM seems to be a bit better as far as customization is concerned.
$20! Yikes. I mean, well if you don't want it then don't buy it. Currently PCM keyboard is free and probably better because you can skin/customize it to heck. But it's good to see more usable soft keyboards coming out. I still can't believe it took the iPhone to make WinMo developers to do this. We(WinMo users) could have used somthing like these years ago!

If most of the features were provided by WinMo, then our forum won't be so crowded like nowadays.
I just try to see it from + side..
Edit:
What the heck!!
All replies made by senior.. oops.. I need to get a hell out of here ..
VERY nice that it's gettin bigger in landscape mode.

Agreed. I need a period and comma on the first keyboard screen, as well as the ability to get to a "_" and "\" without using the full keyboard. If there were some decent layout choices, this would be a winner, as the spacing and response is good from what I have seen thus far.
I'm not going to pay $20 for something that should have been on the damn phone when I bought it, as good as it may be. I use PocketCM keyboard now, which works fine. I like Touchpal too but I only use it at home where I sms in 1 language. I could pay for it but won't because it should have been there in the first place.
The same could be said for PocketCM contacts and some other tools. Why does someone have to make this in his free time? MS should have done it and if it wasn't for the iPhone craze we'd still be without these great pieces of software.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying for software. I just don't pay for software that fixes problems that shouldn't have to be fixed by end-users.
(Sorry for the rant)
I have resco keyboard pro .rar where do I put it to work?
I used PCM Keyboard until the newest Spb came out a few days ago. I used it for 5 minutes before paying $15 for it. The key spacing is intelligent, and the layout are the best I've seen anywhere. What really sold me was the convenient placing of the ctrl key and the intelligent way the keyboard changes when you press it.
I don't expect I'll ever find better, though I can still hope. Seems clear just from the screenshot though that the Resco still has a lot of catching up to do.

a rar is a packed file like zip, so unpack it and install the file or whatever is in the unpacked folder.
The other thing is that this is really basic knowledge for any user of a computer, so play a little with a PC will help you
MOD EDIT: SHHHHHH!

Thanks! That was my first post here and I really was amazed how fast you guys answered that. So I downloaded a program called winace and I unpacked it. I got the actual keyboard which I installed on my storage card and a resco keyboard keygen. Where do I put that. I am sorry that I am a noob.

This is not a particularly good place to talk about keygens. It implies pirated software and that's sort of against the rules here.
AJ
I am sorry. I didnt know what is keygen.
i hate getting the demon trial is over blah blah lol
MOD EDIT: No warez requests, or i will ban you!
If you like the software you should buy it! XDA is no place for trading warez. Please stay on topic.
@Ponde
You will find your answer HERE.
Sorry for my off topic post.

I like this keyboard a lot!

Just wondering if this keyboard is out, because I am very interested in the layout, etc. If so, can you guys direct me to this CAB.

You could probably achieve this with a skin on the PocketCM Keyboard. In fact I think it has been done. Search PocketCM Keyboard and there will be links to the skins in that thread.
The pic is from Gizmodo
And yes, that is not even a Windows Mobile device, let alone a smartphone. It is the LG Vu. Give up hope on someone being able to "direct you to this CAB," since it's not at all Windows Mobile compatible. However, I'm sure there are similar looking skins for PCMKeyboard. Check here.
Alternatively, Resco Keyboard has a skin competition going right now, with some nice looking skins entered so far. IIRC, "Gesta" looks pretty similar to this. Resco Keyboard is, however, not free.

Yes, the picture is from Gizmo. I don't think it is WM, but I thought perhaps someone could whip up this cab for MW. I did look into PCMkeyboard, and Resco. However, they are not like this at all.
You've checked all the skins? Even if they're not too similar, they're certainly nice enough. Personal preference, though. Maybe you could whip up this skin for us, then
I have the other ones....

This is interesting. I have not seen this keyboard.
Downloading it, and will test it out on my Touch. However, I will do more research and find a program that I could incorporate the keyboard layout like the one I posted.
Made a simple skin to mach this design to my old flash keyboard:

If you like it just download it from the post above and use this jpg with it:

How many times do people have to say this! No warez! Keep this a good forum for developers! There are enough warez sites if you don't want to buy for something people worked hard for!
hmmm....dont know if you refer only to the other post, but my software is freeware...

(Not sure which mccune was referring to but yours are fine)

I actually tried TouchPal, but I have mixed feeling about the program. I just recently went back, and found that there is a newer version. I actually like this.
Here is the download link

Personally I can't recommend TouchPal highly enough. I guess if you are looking for a thumbpad style keyboard it won't work so well for you but it's the quickest and easiest way of getting typed data into a WM machine that I know of. And you can use it one handed. And you can 'train' it to predict all sorts of names, abbreviations, odd words, etc as you go along
I use touch pal .It was hard to get used to cause i like the full keyboard look. but once you get used to it, you can type pretty damn fast. but if the word isn't in it's library you have to spell the entire word by pushing the button then sliding left or right towards the letter on each button, then tell it to save the word. Still the best portrait mode keyboard imo.
I am sure that someone will be able to dump the ROM on the OP's original post. It is teh LG insight I think and just like they were able to rip out the today menu from the LG KS20, I am sure some amazing XDA member will do the same.
SPB Full Keyboard has been around a long time. Its not bad, it used to be one of the best, but I personally feel they now lag behind and there are much better virtual keyboards now. Plus SPB take up the ENTIRE screen, with a little view box.
PCM and TouchPAL are both great, I personally feel that TouchPAL is better. Either way, they are both free while SPB Full is not.
I was using TouchPal with my Atom Life and had been using it with my Touch Cruise, but I am actually liking the OEM keyboard that HTC has preinstalled on the Touch Cruise.
